The Legend of Cù Cernunnos: The Hound of Alba
Ⅲ
Six Years Later
Fergus raised his targe just in time to block the spear driven towards his chest. The blow glanced off the side of shield getting caught by the large mettle spike attacked to the boss of Fergus' shield or targe, causing his opponent to stumble. Having caught the spear with his targe Fergus capitalized on the opportunity quickly sliding inside of his opponent's guard before raising his Celtic broadsword and chopping down towards his opponents unprotected side. Fergus stopped mid-swing as he placed the blade at his opponents' neck.
"Do you yield?" Fergus asked slightly out of breath as he kept his guard up knowing what would happen if he lowered it.
The man tensed a bit as he tested the boys' guard before chuckling as he dropped his spear, "I yield son."
Fergus pulled his sword away from his fathers' neck and sheathed it as he walked towards a nearby tree to pick up a bottle of water a large black wolf lazily laying down near it. Connor looked at his son in pride, amazed at how much his son has grown up from a little boy who followed his sisters, to the great warrior in front of him.
"It appears the student has surpassed the master at last," He said with a proud smile adorned on his face.
Fergus shook his head as he sat down and pet the wolf causing him to look at its master in annoyance at being woken up, "My first win against you is hardly surpassing the master." The boy told his father as he tossed a treat to the wolf who immediately forgave him and happily gobbled it up, "I will admit does feel nice to finally win after all these years. You put to much power into that last strike otherwise this battle would be still going."
"Ah but that's exactly the point Fergus," Connor said with pride as he picked up his spear reenacting the final moments of the fight. "You were able to recognize my mistake and capitalize on it before I could recover. You have become a warrior both in mind and body."
Fergus rolled his eyes as he gave the wolf another treat, "You sound like Uncle Ned," the boy said causing Connor to shake his head. 'Ned' also known as Eddard Stark was Connor's cousin from his mother's side.
"Do not undervalue the knowledge you have gained under his tutelage. He has made you a better warrior just as much as I have," Connor said as he lectured his son. "The power to outthink your opponent is just as powerful as the ability to beat them with your strength."
Fergus nodded with an annoyed sigh, "I do appreciate everything Uncle Ned has taught me but does he have to make it so boring?" Fergus wined causing the wolf to roll his eyes as he nipped at his the boys' nose. The son of Artemis let out an indigent cry as he held his nose and glared at the wolf.
Connor laughed, "I don't know if he knows any other way." The man answered honestly, "Although that's probably what makes him the greatest strategist in all the clans."
"What is my next lesson?" Fergus asked as he got up and walked back to the small forest clearing the father and son duo used for combat training.
The wolf growled at Fergus as he yipped asking for more treats, Fergus ignored him still annoyed at the fact that the wolf bit him earlier causing the wolf to tackle him from behind.
"Get off me you damned wolf," Fergus said as he began to wrestle with the annoying black wolf.
"Your next lesson…" Connor started with a hint of amusement in his voice, "Is wrestling, and it seems that Alpha is better than you at that."
Alpha was a black dire wolf that Fergus found in the woods almost a year ago and was about the size of a Doberman. Fergus gave his father an annoyed look showing that he did not find his joke amusing only for Alpha to bite him in the nose again starting another wrestling between the two.
"Your Mother and the Hunt are in town right now."
Fergus stopped fighting as he looked at his father with a hopeful look, "Really?" he questioned only to receive a nod causing the boy to get excited. "Can I go right now?"
Connor nodded with a smile, "Go pack your things and I'll see you on Monday."
Fergus immediately jumped to his feet as he started running to the house with Alpha following happily behind him. The boy stopped as he realized something, "Wait you're not coming?"
Connor shook his head, "I have some business I have to deal with, you go have fun with your mom and sisters. I'll be here to see you on Monday."
"Ok," Fergus said happily, "Can I bring Alpha? Mom and Zoe haven't met him yet."
"Of course," Connor told his son. "I bet your mother and Zoe will love him."
"Ok bye Dad see you on Monday" The young demi-god exclaimed as he ran inside and started packing his things. "Come on Alpha."
"Have fun lad, see you on Monday." Connor stuck his arm out and let out a sharp whistle. At first nothing happened until he heard a piercing cry of a beautiful silver peregrine falcon as it swooped down and landed on his extended arm. "Hello Luna," Connor said as he gently pets the bird, "I have a job for you girl."
Fergus burst out of the house with a pack strapped to his back along with a sword and dirk strapped to his belt, wearing simple leather armor and a green travel plaid with a hyper Alpha following faithfully behind him.
"Hey!" Connor yelled making his son stop in his track as the wolf ran into him behind. "Forgetting something?"
Fergus gave the man a strange look, "No, I don't think so."
"Your Bow's, Lad," Connor told his son once he realized that Fergus would never have guessed it.
"Oh right," The son of Artemis replied lamely as he quickly grabbed his longbow and recurve bow along with a quiver of arrows. "Bye Dad!" Fergus cried back as he ran off, "Bye Luna!"
Connor gave a long sigh as he watched his son slowly disappear into the horizon, "Watch over him will you girl?" The lover of Artemis asked the bird on his arms.
Luna gave a nod as she extended her wings letting out a cry as she took off following behind her master's son.
Monday
Fergus was at the edge of hunter camp as he was saying goodbye to his sisters and mother who was in her adult form, he had a great weekend with Alpha whom his sisters seemed to adore. "When can will I be able to see you again?" The boy questioned almost tearfully as he embraced his mother.
"I don't know my little Moon and Stars," Artemis said affectionately causing Fergus to blush in embarrassment.
"Mom!" Fergus cried out indigently as one of his sisters let out a quick giggle. "All right who was that…" Fergus cried out angrily causing all of them to giggle. "Was it you Samantha? Or was it you Zoe?" he pointed towards his oldest accusatory.
"Don't flatter thyself Alexander," Zoe answered back with a huff. "You may thy self the Big Bad Wolf, but thou are nothing but a little wolf."
Fergus's face turned red in embarrassment as even Alpha seemed to join the girls in giggling at his misfortune. "Can I go now Mom?" The boy asked trying to stop the embarrassment.
"I don't know," Artemis mused in amusement causing her son to give her an annoyed look. "Give me a kiss goodbye and then you may go."
Fergus annoyed look turned in to a look of horror as his mother presented her cheek waiting for her goodbye kiss. "Do I have too?" the boy asked only to receive a look from his mother telling him that he would not leave until he gave her a kiss. Fergus let out an annoyed sigh as he quickly gave his mom a quick peck on the cheek, "Can a go now?" he questioned grumpily make an adorable face that made all his sister's giggle.
"Yes, Alexander you can go now."
With his mother's approval Fergus was gone like a shot, "Come on Alpha." The wolf followed his master faithfully as the boy started to argue with his companion calling him a traitor to which the wolf responded to by biting him causing a totally new argument.
Artemis watched in amusement as her son disappeared. Once her son was gone, she immediately flashed back to her younger form, "All right girls. Time to strike camp we leave for Colorado in two hours."
"Yes Mistress," the girls responded as they all got to work. Artemis smiled as she started to help only for a large sense of dread to encompass her as she looked back towards the direction her son left.
"I'm sorry Moon Dust."
"Are you ok my Lady?" Zoe asked breaking Artemis out of her trance causing her to notice that the moon as blocking the sun and all her hunters were giving her worried looks.
The goddess took a deep breath as she willed the moon to move back to its proper place before looking back at her hunters with a forced smile that did not reach her eyes. "I'm all right Zoe lets get back to work so we can leave."
The other hunters nodded satisfied as they went back to their tasks, only Zoe remained unconvinced before she relented seeing how Artemis did not want to talk about it.
"Be safe my little Moon and Stars," Artemis prayed silently to know one as she wondered what her lover was trying to tell her.
"Listen here you son of a bitch," Fergus said to Alpha who gave him a look of betrayal causing him to roll his eyes. "Like that's an insult for you, you little…" Fergus froze mid-sentence as the smell of smoke filled his nostrils.
Alpha froze as well as he sniffed the air a couple of times as he started to growl at the direction the house was, Fergus looked up as he saw a trail of smoke almost a mile away originating where his house should be.
The young demigod booked it to his house with Alpha following close behind, soon the sound of combat filled the boy's ears as he pulled out his recurve bow along with five arrows. Fergus managed to make it to his house only to see his father with a sword and targe surrounded by a group of twelve men wearing black skull masks adorned with what looked to be cow horns.
The older man was bleeding profusely as there seemed to be quite a bit of dead bodies lying about the property. A man with a claymore charged Connor with a large overhead swing, the lover of Artemis quickly raised his targe as he redirected the blow to the side as he thrust his sword into his attacker's unprotected side. "Twenty!" Connor cried triumphantly as his attacker fell on the ground dead.
"Who's next?" The Celtic warrior cried out bravely as he opened up his arms confidently only for him to be impaled in the back by a spear, causing Connor to fall to his knees and drop his sword as he looked at the spear sticking out of his gut in shock.
The man who impaled Connor unsheathed his sword as he circled in front of the dying warrior, "It's your time to die Kinslayer." The man said venomously as he looked at the dying man in front of him with disgust, this man was a little bit different than the other masked men, he seemed to be wearing a crown made of horns showing he was the leader.
"I'm honored," Connor said mirthlessly as he coughs out some blood. "To think, that the leader of the Wild Hunt himself would come here himself to kill me. I thought the clans disbanded you guys."
"We don't serve the clans Kinslayer nor do we serve that old fool that calls himself the Stiùiriche cogaidh," (War Leader) the man said as he moved the spear in Connor's gut a bit causing to him to let out a sharp yelp. "We serve the Fianna, and you have outlived your usefulness."
"Fuck you," Connor replied harshly as he coughed out some blood and spit it towards the man's face managing to get in between the eye holes.
The man wiped off the blood as he moved the spear more forcefully, "For the betterment of the Fianna we end your life." The man said as he lifted his sword and held it in a two-handed grip, "Any last words Kinslayer?"
"Valhalla."
The man brought his sword down in a downwards swing attempting to end Connor's life. Fast as lighting Connor quickly lifted his targe to block sword strike only for the targe to rattle intensely as the Leader's sword digging into the shield and breaking Connor's arm. The man tried to pull his sword back only to be surprised when he realized that it was stuck.
Taking advantage of the man's moment of surprise Connor unsheathed the dirk strapped to his belt and slashed at the Leaders gut injuring right as he pulled out his shield. The man stumbled back a bit as he looked at his wound before swing at Connor with more force as the man gave him a bloody grin.
"I'm sorry Moon Dust," Connor thought mournfully as he suddenly felt the cold kiss of steel and his world went dark.
"Father!" Fergus cried out in shock as he saw his fathers head roll of his body drawing the attention of the masked men.
