AN: I still can't believe that Hawaii Five-0 is over now..but at least McRollins got their happy ending. But I am still really sad that there won't be an eleventh season, because that way we could have seen their relationship develop again. Maybe we could have seen them get married or have a child. Their story had a lot potential and I will forever be bitter that Peter Lenkov didn't make use of that as much as he could have. But overall I am really happy with the ending, because even though their scene is really short, it's perfect and it completes the series on a great note.

Here are some of my ideas that could have made the finale even better. Have fun reading. Feedback is greatly appreciated. And please stay safe and healthy!

"Are you ready?" she asked.

He was. He had been ready for a long time, if he was honest. Ready to put himself before the job. Ready to find the right woman and start a family. Ready to settle down and find some peace. Ready to grow old.

"Yeah." he replied and with a slight nod she indicated that she was ready too. He intertwined his hand with hers and she smiled at him.

There were still a lot of things that needed to be discussed, but he couldn't help the grin that appeared on his face. She was here. She had always been there really. Whenever he needed her, she was there. While he had been taking care of everybody else but himself, she had been the one looking out for him. For almost 20 years now. Whether it was after the loss of a loved one like his dad and Freddy or to rescue his mother or to avenge Joe's death. Or a million other things. And now, she was here too. After everything that had happened he would start this new chapter of his life with the love of his life. With Catherine. And for the first time in a long time he was actually looking forward to the next day, he was feeling good about the future.

"Soo.." he trailed off, because he was somewhat afraid to continue. Deep down he knew that she would have never come here if she wasn't committed to him and their future, but he just needed to be sure.

"I am done." she confirmed with a small nod, "I have been wanting to get out for some time now. It's just not what I consider most important anymore." She had always loved her job and she didn't really have a problem with putting it first, because that had just always been who she was. Both of them had been like that - that's why he always understood her decision. The job had always come first. However, with each time she had to say goodbye to Steve again, her job lost its' appeal more and more. And now, she was offered the chance to start over and finally be with the person she had always been the happiest with, "We are going to be whoever and wherever we want to be now. And everything that comes after that...we will figure that out too."

"Okay." he said with a big grin. That sounded really really good.

"Okay." she repeated and chuckled. She had finally been selfish. She had finally put herself before the job. And it felt weird, really weird, but also so good. It felt sensational. And most importantly: it felt right. She rested her head on his shoulder, seeking the closeness she had missed so much over the last few years, their hands still intertwined.

"I am really glad you are here." he whispered and pressed a soft kiss on her dark hair.

Just mere days ago he had talked to Lincoln about Catherine. How she had been his girl, how they had dated for a bunch of years and how she had been the one that got away. And now - as unreal as it still sounded - she was gonna be his happily ever after.

A few hours later, they exited the plane, picked up their luggage and strolled out of the airport, hand in hand, ready to start this new chapter of their lives. With a soft but determined pulling of her hand, he caused them to stop in the middle of the entrance hall. She looked at him, trying to read his expression in order to figure out what was going on.

"What, are we going?" she asked, but instead of receiving a verbal answer he pressed his lips on hers. Her hands automatically found their way to his cheek, dropping the duffel bag in the process, as he leaned in even more. His tongue brushed her lips, so she let it enter and their tongues clashed with a passion she hadn't felt in ages. With his arms around her waist he pulled her closer; so close he could feel her bare skin through their thin layer of clothes, but after having spent so much time apart even that wasn't close enough. He could feel her smile into the kiss, before they had to part due to the lack of air.

"Took you long enough." she breathed and he couldn't help but grin at the deja-vu. And just like the last time when he had kissed her for the first time in a long time at Kono's wedding, she was now feeling a little weak at the knees too.

"I really wish we weren't at an airport right now." he admitted with a smug grin. He had not only made her feel wanted when he had kissed her just mere seconds ago, it was also clearly visible in his eyes.

"Let's go then." she whispered and winked. She took his hand into hers again, as they left the airport. This little adventure of theirs hadn't even started properly yet, but she already felt like she was the happiest person on the planet.

After 6 months of traveling the world together, as tourists this time and not as soldiers on a mission, they returned home. In those 6 months they found the peace both he and Catherine had been looking for. They caught up on everything they had missed out on over the years they had spent apart, they talked about their future and about their life together. They found their way back to each other.

One evening about 2 months ago, they had been in Mumbai at that time, he had popped the question. He had bought a ring in their first night in Mumbai, because it had just felt like the right place to do it. About 8 years ago they had wanted to meet up there, they had wanted to meet halfway after she had been deployed to the gulf, but they never made it happen. And now, they finally had.

After a great meal in a local restaurant, they had strolled along the beach that was so different from the ones in Hawai'i, but at the same time so similar. He got down on one knee and even though he had tried really hard to not make it sound so cheesy, it probably had. But it didn't really matter anyway, because she had said yes. Without doubt nor hesistation her answer had been yes.

And now, two months later they were having some sort of belated engagement party with their ohana in Hawai'i. Steve and Danny were sitting on the wooden chairs in his backyard, each with a Longboard in their hands, as they watched the waves crash at the shore. And for the first time in a long time Steve felt at peace just by sitting here - just like he used to.

"You know, um, I gotta let you in on something, uh, married life isn't actually as great as you always imagine it. I mean there are all those things..like uh, bills and all those fights and-" Danny started, but was cut off by Steve.

He knew Danny well enough to be able to look right through this, "Someone's afraid to lose me, huh?" Steve asked teasingly.

"No. I am just saying that you should know what you are getting yourself into." Danny tried to maneuver himself out of the situation he had brought onto himself, "You know, I am talking out of experience." He yanked up his arms in the air, trying to underline his point.

"You know you could just say congratulations, right?" Steve replied and couldn't help but chuckle.

"Are you guys coming?" Catherine's voice came from the lanai, saving Danny from having to come up with anything else. Everyone of their friends was standing by the brazier or sitting at the table, obviously just waiting for the two of them to join the party.

"Coming babe." he replied and got up, "Come on, Danno, you are not gonna lose me." Steve added, when Danny made no effort whatsoever to get up.

"I am not-that's not what I meant, I.." Danny rolled his eyes, but couldn't help the small smile, "Congratulations, man." he said finally and hugged the other man. Though Danny had needed some time to understand that Catherine was back in his life, first as his girlfriend and now as his fianceƩ, he was really happy for his friends. The only reason he hadn't been at the beginning was that he was worried about his best friend. But even he had to realize that something had changed, for both Catherine and Steve. And they deserved their happy ending more than most people he knew. Steve could barely cover his self-satisfied smile, "But don't say you haven't been warned."

"Thanks man. I appreciate it." Steve replied and loosened his grip on Danny. They joined the others at the table, ate and laughed together and everything was just the way it had been before Steve had left. Actually, it was even better. Steve was much more relaxed and he finally got his girl back. After everything they had been through, he still couldn't believe that he was actually gonna marry Catherine. The love of his life.

When Catherine came back from the bathroom, she sat down on his lap and his hand came to rest on her hip. His fingertips softly caressed her stomach, though he tried to do it as inconspicuously as possible. At the touch, she turned her head to look at him, locking her eyes with his. The only thing he saw in her eyes was love, mirroring his own expression. A few days ago they had found out that she was pregnant, which only increased their happiness. But for now her pregnancy would remain their little secret. He leaned in to place a soft kiss on her lips.

"Oh would you two just cut it out? We all know you are in love, but we don't wanna see that. Come on!" Danny exclaimed and rolled his eyes. Steve and Catherine broke their kiss for a moment, both grinning from ear to ear. But before Steve could say something in his defence, Lou took over for him.

"Come on, Danny, how old are you? It's their engagement party jeez." Lou piped up and to everybody's surprise it was Tani, who sided with Danny: "I am actually with Danny on this one. I mean I am really happy for you two, but you just had 6 months of doing that."

"Like you two are any better." Lou commented and nodded with his head in Tani's and Junior's direction. A heated discussion erupted and Catherine and Steve returned to kissing each other, without anybody even noticing it.

"I love you..both." he whispered into the kiss - as quietly as possible of course. Her eyes opened, she looked alarmed, but she relaxed just a few seconds later, when she realized that no one seemed to have heard his little admission.

"Love you, too." she replied and smiled into the kiss.

This little break he had taken turned out to be one of the best decisions of his life. He not only got to rest for a bit, he also got his girl back. The love of his life. They would be getting married, they even had a little kid on the way. They realized that Hawai'i was always going to be their home, no matter how far they traveled. And when they had returned, their ohana had welcomed them home with open arms.

For the first time in a long time everything seemed to fall into place, all of this just felt so right to him. He didn't remember a moment in his life where he had ever been happier.
