Hospitals have always had Sasuke on edge. Considering how many times he's had to be in and out of them. Most instances have involved his brother Itachi. That time he passed out because of blood loss. Or that time he'd relapsed. Or that fun time that he thought staying off his meds was a good idea and was rushed to the emergency room. He wasn't breathing for a while so that was great for Sasuke's mental.
So yeah, hospitals are so enjoyable for him. Never had Sasuke found himself in the hospital for himself. Unless it was for an annual "you're not getting any taller than this" checkup. The lights were glaringly harder to handle for longer than an hour. And getting your body plugged up with liquids is the weirdest feeling in the world. But it wasn't the worst part.
The worst part was that he wasn't allowed to leave his hospital room to go and see the state of Naruto. Naruto, selfless kind stupid Naruto, maneuvered the two of them in the car accident so that he took most of the force. Sasuke was still conscious when it happened. And when he turned to the left he saw a sight that made him want to puke. It still made him want to puke. Naruto, unconscious, head pretty banged up and body not looking any better.
He had blood running down his face and dripping into his eyes, making them red. His arm was stuck between the wheel and something hard that was now protruding into the car. His leg looked awful and made Sasuke gag. No matter how much Sasuke shook Naruto or slapped his face and yelled his name he didn't budge. Sasuke sucked up very manly tears and called 911. He was snippy with them, but they were nothing but understanding.
Sasuke was banged up too, but his emotional state was much more fucked up. His shoulder was stiff and midsection needed a lot of bandages, but other than that he didn't have much physical pain. All he could think about was how red Naruto's blonde hair looked or how…just how much of his blood got on Sasuke's hands. Before Sasuke could start remembering even more gory details, a nurse walked in quietly with a forlorn look.
Tsunade. She was like Naruto's grandmother. Sasuke could only imagine how she felt. She cleared her throat and moved further in the room. She started looking at the monitors next to Sasuke's bed and was doing a lot of writing and started touching his arm before he spoke at the same time she did.
"How are you feeling?" "When can I see him?"
Tsunade sighed. She wrote something else down and took a step back. "He's still in a comatose state. And you're not in the best condition either. You can't start walking up and about."
Sasuke narrowed his eyes, "I feel fine."
Tsunade twitched her left eye, Sasuke lowered his angry front a bit. Because he can recall vividly, this same woman, dislocating Naruto's shoulder (and making him put it back) when he pissed her off. Tsunade pressed at his stomach and he winced, jolting away. "Feel fine, huh?"
"I feel fine when someone isn't pressing at my injury."
Tsunade gave him a sympathetic look. "Listen Sasuke. I'm going to be blunt, alright?" Tsunade waited for Sasuke to nod before she continued, "Naruto's condition isn't…great. It's good you called as soon as you did because if not then…" She let her words hang in the air, Sasuke balled his fists.
"You'll see him. Soon enough. But, fair warning, he hit his head…pretty hard."
"Okay? It's not like Naruto can become much dumber."
Tsunade poked his stomach again, making him flinch and groan. She put her hand on her hip, contorting her face. "I mean that there is a very big chance that he has slight amnesia. He might remember his name, age, favorite food maybe, but there's a possibility he won't remember some people."
"Who could he forget?"
Tsunade shrugged. "He could remember anyone up until now but not know who they are to him. He could remember me, but not Jiraiya. Or remember Sakura and not Ino."
Sasuke stayed silent for a minute before he asked another question, "It's not permanent, right?"
Tsunade shrugged again. "In some cases it is."
"In some cases?"
"Look Sasuke, this is a conversation we should have when you aren't high off painkillers. You need to rest for now and hope for the best." Sasuke looked like he wanted to protest, but then Tsunade held up her finger to poke his gut again and he coiled back. She motioned to leave but stopped to ask him one last question. "By the way, do you know anybody that has B blood? Naruto lost quite a bit. I'd ask Jiraiya but he's out of town."
Sasuke thought it over, "There's…Kiba Inuzuka. Also Konohamaru." She spoke her thanks and looked at Sasuke with an understanding look.
"Naruto is a strong person, whether he has his memories or not. You shouldn't worry too much, he'll wake up and either still be in love with you or fall all over again. All I ask of you is to be there for him no matter what." Sasuke blinked owlishly out of shock.
Because, frankly, he never thought Tsunade thought that highly of him. The whole meeting each other's family thing was a gruesome process and during Christmas so it was much worse. Jiraiya grew on Sasuke and the other way around pretty fast, but Tsunade always seemed like she had distaste for him. He'd expect those words from anyone but her.
"That goes without saying."
She smiled and left.
.
About one week. It'd been about one week. Lots of idiots had come to visit Sasuke. At the top of the list of idiots was Kiba. Boasting about how he and Naruto were basically brothers now and Sasuke would need Kiba's blessing to wed the blonde. That resulted in a punch to the face. Sakura and Ino came with bouquets of flowers. Ino saying they were free of charge. Then there was Jiraiya who came by after looking like he'd cried for hours over Naruto's state. Only one smart person came to visit and that was Itachi, unfortunately he brought Shisui.
His parents who weren't in America were about to drop everything and come to visit, but Sasuke convinced them that he'd be fine. Convincing them took about the whole week.
It was nearing the time that Sasuke could be discharged, only about three more days to be sure. In all this time however, Naruto was still asleep. Condition getting better apparently but according to Jiraiya he "hadn't looked so fucked up since that time they had a fake wrestle match." It was hard to will himself not to hop out of bed and to his room. Sasuke was very allowed to walk at this point, but he didn't think his mind could handle seeing Naruto.
Until now of course.
He was standing outside of his room, about to open it but couldn't quite get there. Nurses and doctors were moving in the background, the smell of the hospital becoming suffocating with how much longer Sasuke stood there. He'll wake up and either still be in love with you or fall all over again. Sasuke slowly opened the door and let out a shaky breath, not looking at the bed until he was fully in the room, the door closed. He only stared at Naruto's feet for a while.
His left one wrapped up and elevated. The beeping of the heart monitor steady, it shook sometimes but otherwise steady. Sasuke sighed and moved further in. He glanced at Naruto's face. It wasn't as bad as he thought. Don't get him wrong, Naruto was fucked up beyond compare. But it was liberating to finally be able to see him after all this time. His head was bandaged, a healing bruise on his left cheek. His right arm immobile and wrapped up, making his left side almost completely unusable. There was a slight wheezing to his breathing but it calmed Sasuke.
His bottom lip was busted, and his eyelashes looked a bit more blonde under the light, his blonde brows weren't furrowed or twisted, but serene. Specks of brown here and there that made Sasuke really want to kiss him. Sasuke, against his better judgement, let his hand slowly grasp Naruto's uninjured right hand. When Sasuke felt the all too familiar calluses and grooves he sighed. "This is stupid."
"No, it's not." Sasuke retracted his hand, turning around to see Shizune, Tsunade's assistant. "I think it's cute." That's when Sasuke realized just how much more stupid this was.
"Please, never again." Shizune laughed and walked further in. "You know, you only need to be little bit more patient." Sasuke's brows shot up.
"What do you mean?"
Shizune smiled. "I mean, he's going to wake up in a few days.
.
It wasn't until Sasuke was discharged did he realize Shizune is a liar.
.
It took eight more days before Naruto stirred in his comatose state.
.
Another four before his heart rate increased rapidly.
.
Two more before Shizune apologized.
.
Maybe three months later where university was out and Sasuke celebrated his birthday alone did Tsunade tell him Naruto woke up.
.
Hospitals have always had Naruto on edge. With the instances he's been in them, his overall impression was terrible. He'd typically been here to support Sasuke with Itachi. When he passed out because of blood loss, resulting in Naruto fainting. Or that grueling time he'd relapsed. Can't forget that time that he wasn't on his meds and was rushed to the emergency room. He wasn't breathing for a minute there so it was difficult to calm Sasuke down.
Naruto really thought he was immune to any type of crazy incident with himself. Clearly karma hit him hard for always plucking Ino's flowers and now here he was. His head was heavy and he had a small headache from just waking up. His arm was in a cast as was his leg, both very numbing to move. He'd been awake for about an hour and he must have been famous before he got hurt. So many people came to visit him. One was Ino, he remembered her vividly. Then there was this girl with pink hair who's name was Sakura he thinks.
Jiraiya and Tsunade were weird around him for some reason. There was one brunette guy that keep saying they were basically brothers. Kiba he thinks. There was one shy girl who brought him flowers, Hinata? Shikamaru was there too, smart as ever. Itachi and some funny guy, Shisui (?), came too. Too many people, most that he couldn't remember.
Right when Naruto thought it was over, someone came bursting though the door. Naruto's immediate reaction was shock, but when he saw the guy, he went to thinking. Wow. He's pretty. Naruto had thought Itachi was pretty too, but too mature and serious. This guy seemed, maybe, his age. The man in question had dark disheveled but styled hair. He was lean and a bit built, pale skin. His eyelashes were long, Naruto admired how they looked in the morning sun. His lips were pink and a bit full, slender fingers and all around gorgeous.
The man straightened his back and closed the door. He cleared his throat and stayed where he was. His cold eyes stared at him distantly. The man inhaled deeply and meandered out a question, "Well, do you remember me or not?" Naruto was caught off guard with how he could be so direct. His voice was like silk, but there was a strong sense of masculinity there. The man grew impatient with Naruto's staring and glared slightly. "Well?"
Naruto flinched, not noticing how Sasuke quickly had a concerned look and stepped closer to the bed. Naruto swallowed thickly and glanced up at Sasuke. "I, uh…I don't. I'm sorry." The man grit his teeth and decided to not look at Naruto anymore. Naruto didn't know why, but he felt bad. "Can you tell me who you are?"
The man sighed, looking back at him. "Sasuke Uchiha."
Naruto perked, "Oh, you're Itachi's brother."
Sasuke rose a brow, "You remember Itachi?"
Naruto shrugged half heartedly, "A little bit. I remember that he's smart and sarcastic. He told me he had a little brother that got hurt in the crash too."
Sasuke blinked twice. He did it in a way that Naruto thinks he didn't really need to blink but was digesting information. He oddly found it cute. "What did he…everyone tell you about me?"
(Sasuke specifically remembers asking them to not, repeat, not tell him anything about him)
Naruto frowned, trying to remember it all. "That you're blunt and a good friend of mine. They really kept saying the good friend part." Sasuke mentally scolded them for subtlety. Naruto gave Sasuke a small smile that almost made Sasuke trip when walking closer but he didn't. He was really too thankful in that moment to finally see Naruto's eyes again. "No one mentioned how pretty you were."
Um. What.
"Because you are. Really pretty."
No, for real. What. The. Fuck.
Sasuke didn't know how to respond to that at all. His ears felt warmer and he coughed into his hand, putting his hands into his pockets. Very glad he didn't have a heart monitor on him. Under normal circumstances Sasuke would've smacked that proud expression right off of Naruto's face. But this time was different he supposes (supposes!?). "How do you – uh – feel?"
The smile on Naruto's face was still there. "I'm sore all over, but other than that I already can't wait to leave." When the words left Naruto's mouth he seemed to remember something else. "Oh uh, the girl with pink hair? She told me that you knew where I lived."
Fucking Sakura.
"Than uh…that guy with Itachi said we…live together?"
Fucking Shisui.
Sasuke nodded, "Yeah, we…where you live is about an hour away from the hospital. We do live together but only for…convenience."
"Convenience?"
"The university where we both go is close there so we decided to live together. My name is on the lease though." Sasuke sniffed. For some reason, Naruto chuckled at this. A sound that really kind of made Sasuke want to kiss him for the millionth time since this reunion started.
Tsunade entered, seeing Sasuke and smiling wearily. Naruto brightened at seeing her, Sasuke wasn't jealous. Not at all. "Hi granny!" She checked on his injuries that would be healed in only a bit, the casts could come off soon. Sasuke was very ready to take Naruto home now. Like right now.
But of course Naruto had to stay one more night to be sure and Sasuke slept alone for another day.
.
The next day Sasuke came about three hours early. It was really fulfilling to see Naruto walk, sort of, in front of him. His hair was in a state that only some who was in bed for over three months could have. His eyes were dulled from painkillers maybe but still bright. He looked tired and Sasuke's heart fluttered when Naruto spotted him and was on the verge of grinning. Naruto trudged over with Shizune behind him with bags of things. Naruto stopped in front of Sasuke and Sasuke thought it would get awkward immediately.
But what do you know, this is still Naruto and nothing is awkward with him. "Hi again. Um…Sasuke?"
"Yeah."
"Yours is the first name I didn't forget!" That shouldn't have made Sasuke as happy as it did. Shizune interrupted by telling Sasuke just how to help Naruto through this.
"Movement usually isn't encouraged, but he was out for a while so definitely go for it. There's some prescription here for him. One every eleven hours. I gave him one just now so remember the time. If he needs helps with anything like eating, writing, or showering," Sasuke noticed Naruto blush, "Then don't hesitate. Here you go. Good luck you lovebir – "
Sasuke coughed to cut her off. Naruto turned to him with a worried look. "You good? That was a nasty one."
"Perfectly fine. Shizune, how long does he need the medication?"
"The rest of the week, only a few days."
Sasuke grunted, "You sure? Not three months?"
Shizune sweat dropped. "Never living that one down. Yes, I'm sure this time. Now be careful. And Naruto, don't resist help. Also don't spit the pill out when no one is looking. I don't care if it tastes like shit." Shizune left them with a smile and was gone.
The silence ensued between the two. Sasuke, without a word, began walking out of the hospital. Naruto followed, jittery. Sasuke slowed his pace for him to keep up. Once they reached the parking lot. Sasuke pulled out his keys, his car beeping. "Wah, you have an Audi?" Sasuke didn't find it concerning at all that Naruto knew cars names, but not his own boyfriend.
He only blinked. "You have a Volvo." Naruto's was the one that crashed, but three months is a good time to fix a car.
Naruto widened his eyes. "Really? Are we, like, rich?" Sasuke felt himself bristle at the pronoun.
"We're well off." They got in the car, Sasuke starting it up, leaving this dreaded hospital finally. It was a quiet car ride for about twenty minutes, until Naruto's true nature of having ADHD revealed itself. He tapped his uninjured foot and worried his knuckles. Looking out the window, seeing surroundings he didn't remember at all. When they reached a stoplight, Naruto's eyes were focused on a very liked ramen place called Ichiraku's Ramen. Sasuke held in a scoff. "You hungry?"
As if on cue, Naruto's stomach growled. He scratched the back of his head endearingly and chuckled. "Heh, I've been sort of living off liquids for a while. Do you mind? I don't really have money…"
Sasuke did notice how Naruto's lean muscle was much less muscle. He was thinner, not unhealthily, but it did make Sasuke have the urge to become Aunt Uruchi and feed him until he was back to normal. "I don't mind."
Sasuke let the red become green and took a turn to enter the parking lot of the ramen place. They stepped out, Sasuke sorting out his wallet and Naruto looking around like a curious new cub. Yet again, a kiss was in order. But Sasuke's whole plan was to break it to Naruto that he's gay when they're more comfortable with each other. Then again, Naruto already seems to be familiar with that attribute about himself from the pretty comment.
(Not that a man who's straight can't call another man pretty. That's actually really progressive for men and very non-toxic masculinity).
They went inside, Sasuke watched Naruto's reaction. He looked around the place with a parted mouth and a lot of curiosity. Before Sasuke could ask if he remembered anything, the owner of the shop dropped an order of ramen with shock. "Naruto?!" Almost immediately, everyone in the shop turned to the entrance. The owners daughter gasped dramatically. Konohamaru forgetting about his broken order and jumped up. Iruka looking like he was about to faint. Kakashi seeming like he was about to have a mental breakdown.
Naruto was very much confused, because to him this was all new. He didn't know who these people were in the slightest. Sasuke stopped all of them from pouncing on him. Glaring at them. "Naruto is just fine. We're here because he's hungry, so make him his favorite and don't overwhelm him." They shriveled under Sasuke's gaze, being led to a seating area outside, away from the commotion that Naruto was awake and alive and all around still blonde. Which is the dumbest thing Konohamaru could've said in that moment.
But Sasuke gave him the benefit of the doubt because he believed Naruto would become a redhead with how much blood matted his hair.
When they were seated and waiting on their food, Naruto was still like a newborn puppy, evaluating his settings. Eventually he looked back at Sasuke and stared. For a while actually that Sasuke twitched his brows. "What is it?"
"That was the first time I heard you say my name."
No it wasn't.
"Also. You got really…mama bear in there." Sasuke almost choked on his spit.
"What?"
Naruto smiled, "Like when all those people remembered me and were about to run over you got really protective. Are we childhood best friends? It seemed reflexive of you." Sasuke caught off guard is not used to Naruto using words like reflexive.
He cleared his throat and answered nonetheless. "We've known each other since we were twelve so. I guess."
Naruto tilted his head to the side. Fuck stop being so cute what the fuck. "Since twelve? That's a long time."
"And you don't remember any of it." Sasuke really didn't want for that to come out of his mouth. He meant to say it in his head. But couldn't really hold much in when Naruto didn't even remember the fact that he's his boyfriend. Since sophomore year of high school. Now they're sophomore in college, this is supposed to be a year of nostalgia damn it, and he doesn't fucking know it. They went through way too much universal bullshit for it to be forgotten because of a drunk driver. Sasuke wished he remembered the license plate so he could find and strangle the person.
Naruto deflated, making Sasuke almost feel bad. But no because Sasuke is the one who has to live in a world where he and Naruto are really good friends who live together for convenience. "I'm sorry. I wish I could. Like all those people in there, or some of my friends. I couldn't even remember what car I drove. I wish I could remember you too."
Now Sasuke is a douchebag. He sighed and rubbed at his temple. "It's not your fault. You didn't cause that fucker hitting you in that crash." That was the first time Sasuke cursed in front of Naruto since he woke up and Naruto acted like it was the most natural thing in the world.
.
They got their ramen and Sasuke was pleased that Naruto enjoyed it so much, even finishing Sasuke's for him.
.
The entrance into their shared home did make Naruto recall a few things. Sasuke didn't hope one of them would be how many times Naruto attacked his mouth there. No, Naruto remembered where they kept the spare key. Not under the mat or in a fake plant thanks very much. They aren't that dumb, well, Sasuke wasn't that dumb. Naruto suggested they put it in the bushes.
"Wow, nice place." Naruto looked around the home with vigor.
"It's yours too." Sasuke held in his bitter tone.
Once Naruto peeked his head out of the kitchen he asked a question, "Where do I sleep?"
Shit. Sasuke didn't completely think things through. Since Naruto and him kind of stayed in the same room and bed. All his stuff was there as was Naruto's. Now if Sasuke was Naruto, he'd wonder why he and his good friend slept in the same bed when there was another bedroom.
"Sasuke - ?"
"The couch." That probably didn't make anything better. "But that's not, I mean – "
"I slept on the couch?"
"By choice."
"Oh. Okay then." Sasuke was very thankful for the fact that Naruto was still gullible even without his memories.
"You can…rest. Or shower if you want."
Naruto bit the inside of his cheek. "Oh uh, where's the restroom?"
"Down the hall, it's the only door that isn't gray." When Naruto thanked him and began to make his way, Sasuke wondered if he should help him at all. But that'd be too weird. Way too weird.
.
The week went by without a hitch. Shizune informed him that Naruto needed only about two more days for the cast of his arm and leg, then they're gone. Practically Naruto should've lost the cast on his leg one month ago, but Tsunade wanted to be completely sure since his leg was the most damaged in the crash. Naruto hasn't been off his meds for more than a day so he'd been really out of it and woozy.
Their sleeping arrangements were solved easily. Sasuke suggesting Naruto sleep in the other bedroom after he moved Naruto's stuff while he was asleep. Mornings for Naruto were slow. Sasuke had to help him get out of bed a few times. Eating was the easiest for Naruto so far. He never failed to compliment Sasuke's cooking either.
"You're really good at this."
"Wow, that was great Sasuke!"
"I never thought I could enjoy vegetables, you know!"
As far as Sasuke knew, Naruto was still there. He just didn't remember all the things that really made him Naruto. It wasn't until Kiba dropped by once suggesting alcohol did Naruto show more of his normal behavior.
"He can't have alcohol, he's on medication."
"Oh come on, Itachi drank when he was on heavy medication!"
"Yes, and he almost died." Naruto ended up laughing his ass off when Sasuke almost killed Kiba and it was a moment Sasuke wished he could document. All in all, things were pretty serene, Sasuke was currently folding Naruto's laundry, Naruto taking a bath. Sasuke was about to skip over Naruto's underwear (Because no, Sasuke didn't need that mental image right now) when he heard a loud bang and someone groan.
Like a light, he was up and racing towards the bathroom. He opened it without knocking or saying anything. There was Naruto, on the floor, naked mind you. He was holding his forehead with a grimace, his left leg having failed him, making him trip right as he stood out of the tub. When Naruto noticed Sasuke, he got really flustered.
Sasuke did not entertain any ideas and spoke very evenly, "Are you okay?" He walked further in, Naruto curled in on himself, hiding his naked body as best he could and coughing awkwardly.
"I was trying to grab the shampoo."
"You want to wash your hair?"
"Yeah, my hair has been really dry." Probably from all the blood it had in it. Sasuke helped Naruto to stand, he was really wobbly, holding Sasuke's arm pretty tight, leg shaking while Sasuke got him back in the tub. Back facing him. Right when Sasuke grabbed the shampoo, Naruto tried to take it from him, but he refused.
"I'll do it." The way Naruto's brows pinched together and his ocean eyes blinked didn't help Sasuke's situation. Naruto relented and turned away from him again. Sasuke took some shampoo into his hands, rubbing it gently into Naruto's hair and scalp. The tense state Naruto was in immediately washed away. He relaxed and moaned a little from the ministrations Sasuke applied to his scalp.
Fuck if that didn't get Sasuke going.
"Thanks."
"For?" That was a stupid question really, but for Sasuke this was all pretty normal. Making Naruto breakfast, folding his laundry, seeing him naked, washing his hair. All of it. The only abnormal part was the fact that they were good friends and they weren't sleeping in the same bed.
Also did Sasuke mention Naruto doesn't remember squat about him? Cause he doesn't.
"For taking care of me. Even though I don't even know that much about you anymore. You were in the crash too and probably have needs of your own, but you're just…caring for me so much, you know?" Naruto moved away from Sasuke's hands and turned around in the tub to face him. "I really appreciate it. Even though this is all pretty new for me, and this is odd for you, I'm really glad I met you all over again."
Naruto's eyes brightened and crinkled in joy. His teeth blaring in his grin. Hair soapy and wet and his form submerged in water. Naruto's words were ones that would mean something to Sasuke even if he had his memory. But the fact that he didn't and Naruto was smiling at him like that made it even better. He'll wake up and either still be in love with you or fall all over again.
It was at that moment that Sasuke knew he was fucked.
Sasuke had felt this urge before, it had been plaguing him for months now and he couldn't do anything about it. He'd controlled himself up until now and still was. The urge made him a wreck on the inside and even more cold on the out. He couldn't understand just what Naruto could even like about him now without knowing why Sasuke was the way he was. Nonetheless the feeling was there as prominent as ever:
Sasuke wanted to kiss Naruto. He wanted to just grab his cheeks, pull him close, and kiss him. Mess up his hair, feel him laugh and smile through a kiss. Touch his skin, face, everything. It hurt Sasuke's brain with the overflowing thoughts and urge to kiss Naruto. Unfortunately Sasuke has some semblance of decency and held it in. Reluctantly, mind you.
Instead of giving in and kissing his grin, Sasuke muttered out an, "Idiot."
Naruto pouted, "What? I'm saying thank you!"
"You're going to get soap all in your eyes, let me wash it out."
"Oh, you're getting all mama bear again."
"Fucking idiot," but Sasuke said it so endearingly. Naruto started laughing and let Sasuke wash out the soap, still laughing. "Stay still." A smile betrayed Sasuke's face.
"Sorry, sorry." Naruto opened his eyes to look up at Sasuke and grinned wider, which was somehow possible. "Sasuke," Naruto lifted a hand and touched Sasuke's hair. "You're really pretty, you know." Sasuke widened his eyes, pausing in his movements. "Even though you're so gloomy."
Sasuke's heart couldn't take this.
"…Idiot."
.
The air between Sasuke and Naruto got much lighter after that bathtub incident. Sasuke referring to Naruto as an idiot like he did before and Naruto got into the groove and teasing Sasuke about his attitude. The want to kiss Naruto didn't die down for Sasuke, only grew. Naruto didn't call Sasuke anything like "pretty" since he washed his hair which did wonders for Sasuke.
Naruto began to become a bit more independent around the house. He'd walk around a lot more, and could even exercise a little. Naruto was a natural late riser but he didn't need help getting out of bed anymore. There weren't any incidents since Naruto fell in the restroom, but Naruto still asked Sasuke to wash his hair for him with a pout.
Sasuke never refused.
It was a Saturday morning and Naruto was sitting on the couch eating yogurt. Sasuke was in his bedroom when Naruto felt like washing up a bit. Turning off the show he was watching, he walked over to the restroom. He smiled and whisked himself to Sasuke's bedroom, wanting to ask him to wash his hair again. Naruto did think he was taking advantage of Sasuke caring for him, but Sasuke never seemed annoyed. He jumped at opportunities to help Naruto really.
Naruto crept to Sasuke's door when he heard his voice on the phone. Naruto didn't want to eavesdrop, but the conversation seemed intense.
"Whatever Itachi, he remembers you, but not his fucking boyfriend."
Naruto tried to register what he just heard. It was a definite possibility that Sasuke was talking about him not being able to remember him. But boyfriend? There were a lot of guys that Naruto didn't remember. Like Kiba or Shino, but if any of them was his boyfriend then wouldn't they be around more? The slight thought that it was Sasuke crossed his mind, but there was no way. Not even the slightest.
"I didn't go through years of melodramatic angst for him to not remember me."
That's when the cogs in Naruto's head got moving and he realized Sasuke was referring to himself as the boyfriend. Naruto did remember what his sexual orientation was, but this whole time he supposed he was single and was kind of pining over his roommate that he didn't remember a thing about. Now he learns that they're dating.
But Naruto still had to be sure.
.
Sasuke hated Sundays. They were long, drab, and pointless. People always have things to do on weekdays and Saturdays are when people recover from hangovers. What's the point of Sunday? For church people? Why can't church happen on a Saturday? It's not like religious people have to recover from hangovers.
In any case, Sasuke despised Sundays. He usually cleaned on Sundays or went grocery shopping. Today he was cleaning vigorously. Because Naruto is an untidy fuck when he has his memory. Imagine what he's like when he can't remember years of Sasuke threatening to cut off his dick if he didn't clean up after himself. So Sasuke was currently sweeping the living room. Full clean gear on. Bandana to hold back his hair, gloves, and an angry expression.
Naruto hadn't left his room for a while, but before Sasuke could go investigate, he turned and saw him in a ways from him with a contemplating expression. "Fuck, don't sneak up like that." Naruto stayed silent. Sasuke rose a brow, "Naruto? What is it?"
Naruto opened his mouth like he had a lot to say but closed it. Sasuke decided to help him. "Do you want me to wash your hair?" Naruto shook his head. "Are you hungry?" Two shakes. "…Then what is it?" Naruto sighed.
"I…wanted to test something."
"Huh? What are you talking about?" Naruto got a new look of determination in his eyes and walked towards Sasuke. Before Sasuke could ask him what he was doing, Naruto pressed his lips against Sasuke's. Sasuke dropped the broom with widened eyes. Naruto had his hands on Sasuke's shoulders, trying to incite a response in him but there was nothing. Eventually Naruto pulled away and glanced down.
"I – sorry, I thought that – " Once the initial shock finally left him, Sasuke smashed his lips against Naruto's. Arms wrapping around his neck. Naruto made a noise of surprise, but kissed him back. Hands finding their way to Sasuke's waist. He was shy and didn't hold on tightly, but was relishing in touching Sasuke at all.
Sasuke might have maybe enjoyed the kiss a bit too much. Hands in Naruto's hair and body pressed against him like he just wanted to merge with him. When Sasuke's mind told him he was overwhelming Naruto, he pulled back, but the universe wanted to give Sasuke one last surprise. Naruto connected their mouths again quickly, moving them to a wall. Sasuke pressed between Naruto and the wall, kissing Naruto for three months worth of waiting. Naruto pressed the boundaries by having his tongue prod Sasuke's bottom lip, Sasuke almost immediately showed him access. Their mouths pressed together lustily, tongues languidly crossing into the others mouth.
Eventually the human need presented itself, Sasuke and Naruto reluctantly breaking apart. A trail of saliva still connecting the two of them before it broke apart. Sasuke's eyes were half lid as were Naruto's. They breathed in each others space, trying to slow their hearts, but the more they were this close the faster they beat.
Naruto gave Sasuke a small smile and was about to speak before the bandana on Sasuke's head slipped off, falling in his face. Naruto chuckled, removing it.
Sasuke rolled his eyes at his smile and swallowed thickly. The two of them still very close, but he spoke, "What did you want to test?"
"If you were my boyfriend or not." Sasuke's eyebrows shot up. "I overheard you. On the phone."
"Ah."
"Sorry for eavesdropping."
"I'm surprised you know that word."
Naruto laughed, tightening his hold on Sasuke's waist which made him preen. "You're a douche, you know." Sasuke knew he finally got the kiss he'd long awaited but he really did want to keep kissing. "Can I kiss you?" It seemed Naruto felt the same way.
"So now you're asking?" Naruto pouted, "That doesn't work on me, I only complied before because I felt bad for you."
"You dick!" Sasuke let his face turn smug. Naruto harrumphed until Sasuke sighed into a smirk.
"Fine then idiot."
Naruto grinned and kissed Sasuke again. Sasuke finally felt at ease for the first time since the accident.
.
"Where was our first date?"
Sasuke loves Naruto. Despite the fact that he's only told Naruto that to his face about two times in a five year relationship. But now that he knew that they were together, he really wanted to know more about their chemistry which made Sasuke want to throw himself in a hole. "Ichiraku's Ramen."
"What, really?"
"You were really cheap."
Naruto rested his cheek in his hand, "How was our first kiss?"
Sasuke recalled the memory vividly. It was right after exams and they'd been going on dates for months without much escalating. Their friends tried to get them alone to finally kiss, but it was all in vain. They'd been worn out after tests and were walking home together sharing an umbrella in the rain. Naruto just had to stop at a 7/11 and drag Sasuke in. They had Griswold level misdemeanors until Naruto lost the umbrella. Sasuke called him an idiot, Naruto called him a jackass. Next thing they knew they were taking refuge in a gazebo trying to warm up.
Naruto tried to be all suave and put his arm around him, but ended up bumping foreheads with Sasuke. Once they stopped arguing Naruto kissed his forehead with a smug look. Sasuke, trying to fluster him, kissed his forehead too. Naruto instead smirked and said, "I'll do you one better," kissing him on the lips.
Recalling it now made Sasuke's heart all jittery and he didn't like it. Instead of answering Naruto's question with that winded journey he shrugged, "It was just a kiss."
"Was it that bad?" Naruto joked.
"Considering it was with you, I like to push the thought of it down."
"Hey! Rude." Forgetting it, Naruto leaned forward in Sasuke's space, "Was I your first kiss?"
"…Yeah."
"And were you mine?"
"I was the poor soul that thought it was a good idea."
"You revel in trying to hurt my feelings."
"Never works anymore. Especially now."
Naruto shook his head endearingly. "Hey Sasuke. Can I…take you out on a date?"
Sasuke perked. He bristled under Naruto's gaze and blinked owlishly. "With who's money?"
Naruto grinned, "I found this orange wallet in my stuff! It could be enough. So, can I? It'll be better than Ichiraku's Ramen." Even though that date was where it was it didn't stop Sasuke from having a good time. But he decided he wanted to see what a Naruto who didn't know anything about him would do. "Please?" There was the legendary pout.
Sasuke sighed, "When are we going?" Naruto practically turned into the sun.
.
Once the busy week was over, Naruto was up and grinning Friday night. He told Sasuke the date officially begins in two hours so Sasuke should be prepared. It was cute to see him so giddy about taking him on a date considering they've been on literally hundreds in the past five years. Naruto told him it wasn't anything too fancy so he dressed as appropriately as he could. A navy button down shirt with black jeans and dark brown shoes.
He adjusted his watch and hair before stepping out of the bedroom. Walking down the hall, he saw Naruto standing there with a flower. It was hard to not burst out laughing. Naruto dawned a black V-neck shirt and blue jeans, his shoes black but the bottom orange which made Sasuke roll his eyes. The flower he was holding was a daffodil that he probably got from Ino.
"You look pretty, as usual." Sasuke scoffed and took the flower gingerly. "You should put it in your hair."
"You're kidding, right?"
"Come on, please! You'd look great!" Against his smart, wise, better judgement Sasuke furrowed his brows and put the daffodil in his hair. He almost crushed it when Naruto giggled. "No, no, you look good! I just think it's funny that your expression doesn't match this look at all."
"You're the bane of my existence."
"I'm glad you think so highly of me, you know." The two of them departed. Sasuke was really fidgety the whole time Naruto was driving (also bitter because you remember how to drive but not your boyfriend) because the last time he drove he forgot majority of their life together. Scratch that, forgot all of it. But he calmed his nerves when Naruto started talking bubbly about just where they were going. It wasn't until they passed by their old high school did Sasuke raise a brow of suspicion. Naruto told him to be patient so he was.
And then it wasn't until they passed by a 7/11 that Sasuke was very confused. Naruto parked the car, rushing over to help Sasuke out which was stupid and Sasuke preferred not taking his hand in favor of telling him to get a brain. They began walking into a very green landscape. Flowers planted everywhere prettily. No one was there and it smelled really good. Naruto discreetly put his hand over Sasuke's when they reached the centerpiece.
A gazebo repainted white, refurbished and looking brand new. There was a basket and two lit candles on the table inside. Sasuke looked at Naruto our of the corner of his eye before he stepped into the gazebo. The flowers here were really exemplary. Sasuke was knocked off his axis. "Naruto," Sasuke choked out, "How did you know?"
Naruto shrugged sheepishly. "Well I figured you'd condensed the story of a frivolous first kiss, so I asked Sakura. She and Ino helped me to tidy the gazebo up, the flowers didn't need too much help since they'd already been growing."
Sasuke felt a heavy weight lift off his shoulders. He wanted to do a lot of things in that moment. Hug Naruto, kiss him, maybe even cry. But Sasuke just let out a dry laugh and gave Naruto a genuine smile, "Hope there isn't ramen in that basket."
Naruto grinned.
Their little date went smoothly. Jokes here and there. They started talking about what Naruto majored in and Sasuke was glad he showed interest in the major he'd already picked. Sasuke complained about some on their professors, Naruto laughing at his dry humor. They'd finished eating and were now walking around the area. Admiring the moonlight and flowers. Reaching a vocal point of the date. "Why didn't you tell me you were my boyfriend?"
Sasuke actually asked himself that question every other day. "I tell myself that I didn't because you would've been overwhelmed."
"And the real reason?"
Sasuke looked up at the stars when Naruto intertwined their fingers. He felt comfortable enough to answer. "I didn't think that you'd feel the same way about me now without your memories. We…went through a lot. Too much…just - the person I am now didn't seem like someone you could really fall for."
Naruto squeezed Sasuke's hand, "Well I proved you wrong."
Sasuke snorted, "Idiot." Naruto and Sasuke shared a smile, Naruto reached up and cupped Sasuke's leaning in and kissing him softly. Sasuke didn't know why, but never has he wanted – needed to cry more than in that moment. Tsunade was right, Naruto did fall for him over again. But he fell for a version of Sasuke that only exists because of him. In a weird way Sasuke felt like maybe, just maybe, this was all muscle memory for him. Naruto had been with Sasuke for five years, five years of being with one person doesn't just vanish.
Maybe Naruto does remember Sasuke and that's leading him to believe he has to have feelings for him. Sasuke's thoughts clearly made the kiss suffer as Naruto pulled away with a worried stare on Sasuke. "Sasuke? What's wrong?"
Sasuke pulled back, "This is wrong."
Naruto blinked rapidly, "What do you mean wrong? Is it something I said? Maybe my mouth tastes too much like grapes for you." Naruto joked but his expression read differently.
"You can't…you don't like me, not really." Naruto narrowed his eyes.
"Who are you to dictate that?"
Sasuke pulled away from Naruto completely. "Who am I to dictate that? The one who's been dating you for five years and knows what your hands feel like, how you kiss, how you smile! This is all just…familiar to you so you settled for it."
Naruto guffawed, "Sasuke, I like you. Why is that so hard to grasp?"
"That's just that. You like me."
"Well I can't…"
"You can't fall in love with someone you just met." Naruto flinched at Sasuke's words. "You remember how I'd fold the laundry or make breakfast, wash your hair, or call you an idiot, you remember that, and now you've confused yourself into thinking you like me, it's all muscle memory."
"Is it such a crime to like your boyfriend?"
"When you're tricked into it, yeah it is."
"Tricked into it? Okay, listen Sasuke, and really listen. No, you can't fall in love with someone you feel like you just met. But I – You are making me rapidly wish I could remember everything. I do remember how you make breakfast, call me an idiot or wash my hair and I love that. All the things that makes you you. I undoubtedly love who you are as a person despite the fact that we've basically only known each other for two and a half weeks. While I can't say now that I am in love with you, I have love for you. And that's…that's not muscle memory, you know?"
When Sasuke was quiet, Naruto stepped forward, "Sasuke, I can't know for sure how we met or how we fell for each other or who fell first. But I do know that the way I feel for you now must've been how I felt those times too."
"…"
"Sasuke?"
"…"
"…Can I kiss you?"
"Shut up dumbass." Naruto kissed him as tenderly as he could.
.
When the feeling of argument left their veins, the two of them were really inseparable. Sasuke hoped Naruto now remembered how he could never not kiss him on the door step of their home because that's the predicament they were in. It was a struggle to keep kissing and still open the door. They stayed connected and even took their shoes off in the doorway without a breather. Naruto shut the door behind him with his foot, turning the lock and still kissing Sasuke. At some point, Sasuke pulled away needing to breath. Naruto tried to latch back on, but Sasuke covered his mouth.
"Why are you so horny all of a sudden?!" Naruto didn't answer and licked Sasuke's palm. "Did you really think that'd effect me?"
Naruto rolled his eyes and pulled Sasuke's hand away. "Have we ever…ever you know."
Sasuke laughed. "Naturally. But tonight I'm pretty tired."
Naruto pouted, "Can I sleep in your room?"
"You're a child and it's our room."
.
The following month of getting ready to hop back into the university life was stressful but fulfilling when they were together. Their life had gotten much more comfortable. Sasuke started to feel like they were finally the way they were before the crash. They'd wake up, eat breakfast ad joke at each other. Naruto would sneak in kisses then they'd eat together while watching cartoons by Naruto's request. Sasuke would shower first, Naruto later in the day and once a week Sasuke washed his hair. Naruto's previous injuries were healed and Naruto started going back to the gym again.
Naruto wasn't sleeping in the guest room anymore and they'd spoon at night. Sasuke always lamenting the fact that he was the little spoon. It was the night before they had orientation for their junior year in college when they began talking about how gruesome the year would be. "Hopefully Shikamaru doesn't fall asleep in the girls restroom again." Sasuke thought Naruto didn't hear him but then he laughed.
"Ha, kind of like the time in freshmen year that he fell asleep in a porta potty."
"Oh yeah," Sasuke snorted, "It was hilarious when it fell over."
Naruto sat up in a fit of giggles, "Or when Choji challenged Kiba to an eat off and they ended up with food poisoning."
Sasuke grimaced, "The amount of vomit was alarming." Then it hit Sasuke, "Wait a minute, when did you start remembering stuff that far back?"
Naruto blinked, "About three weeks ago."
"What!? What else do you remember?"
"Our first time is the top of my list. It was magical. Kind of everything about our relationship is."
Sasuke fumed, "You've remembered all that for three weeks and didn't say anything!?"
Naruto rose a brow, "I didn't know I had to?" Sasuke hit him upside the head with a pillow, "Hey!"
"You idiot!"
"Why are you so angry!?"
"I'd settled for you never remembering anything and just moving forward and your dumbass already had your memory intact!" Sasuke barraged Naruto with two pillows. Naruto began to laugh and hugged Sasuke's midsection to calm him down.
"I'm sorry, sorry!" Naruto gave Sasuke a chaste kiss, "Well I remember now. Oh and by the way, I love you mama bear."
Sasuke hit him with his fist instead of a pillow this time.
