(A/N) This is a short oneshot I wrote for author Zephyr Fyrian. She is completely in love with the Volga x Zelda pairing (Hyrule Warriors) and has been for quite some time now.

The Legend of Zelda is not one of the fandoms I typically write for, so pretty much all of my knowledge on this universe is whatever Zephyr told me. I tried to make sure the details are right, but I wouldn't be surprised if I got something wrong. As for Fire Emblem, that happens to be one of my favorite fandoms (and I'm currently working on another fanfic for it but I don't know when I'll post it). The idea for this story came about when Zephyr and I were comparing the two universes, and discussing 'what ifs' and such.

Also, this story takes itself seriously sometimes, and then at other points it just goes off the rails and doesn't explain why. As I said, this is a oneshot that I have no intention of continuing, and I wasn't really worried about making it too rational. So, if you're the kind of reader who only likes stories that make complete sense...this probably isn't for you. If not, enjoy the craziness!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ZEPHYR!

"Lana, listen to me!" a frantic Princess Zelda pleaded. "He didn't deserve this! You must help me, if there is any way to—"

"But, Princess," Lana interjected, "we don't even know if this will work or not. It could be disastrous—"

"It doesn't matter!" Zelda shrieked. "Don't you understand?! I…I can't…"

Unable to continue, the Princess of Hyrule collapsed on the floor and began sobbing uncontrollably. Lana knelt down beside her and patted her shoulder in an attempt to calm her, but she knew there was no way to really comfort her friend.

Princess Zelda had fallen in love with the Dragon Knight, Volga. And he had died on the battlefield, unable to let go of his pride and surrender even when released from Cia's spell. He had fallen at the hands of Link, slain by the Master Sword.

The war was over now, and yet the princess felt as if she had lost all hope. Yes, Hyrule had been saved, but she didn't know if she could bring herself to live in a world without him.

Though many had assumed she was in love with Link, and vice versa, that had never really been the case. Zelda saw Link as a very close friend and a trusted ally, but nothing more. It had been the expectations of the people of Hyrule that brought them together, but they had soon realized neither one of them wished to be with each other. Link was in love with Lana, and Zelda…

"Why couldn't you have surrendered, you stubborn old dragon?!" Zelda thought. "You knew I would have spent the rest of my life with you… We could have been together…if only…"

"I can't live without him…" the princess finished weakly.

Lana looked at her sympathetically.

"You really loved him, didn't you?" she said. "And I know he loved you. Even while he was under Cia's spell…there was something about being near to you, Princess Zelda, that seemed to change him."

There was a moment of silence, before Lana stood up and helped Zelda get to her feet as well.

"Zelda…I will try to do what you asked," she said.

"You will?" Zelda replied, a faint spark of hope coming to life inside her.

"Yes, but I can't guarantee it will work," Lana said. "Opening a portal through time is not something to be taken lightly. If this goes wrong…"

There was a violent flash of light, and an unfamiliar figure suddenly appeared in the room. He was a young man with bright red hair, dressed in blue. In his hands, he held a sword that seemed to hold some kind of magical power, though it was not one Zelda was familiar with.

"Um…who are you?" Zelda asked, confused.

"Oh, right, we haven't met," the stranger said. "My name is Roy, and I'm from a land called Elibe. You won't know of it, since I'm from a different universe."

Zelda stared blankly for a few seconds, and then shared a glance with Lana. The sorceress looked equally surprised by this strange turn of events. They were supposed to open a portal to the past, to save Volga from dying, not bring in strangers from alternate worlds!

"Look, Roy," Zelda said, "I don't know how you came to be in this world, but I have no need of you. I am attempting to travel to the past to save a dragon from being unfairly killed."

"Really?" Roy remarked. "Interestingly enough, I just so happen to have experience with that. I'm guessing this dragon was fighting for an enemy?"

"Yes, but he was brainwashed!" Zelda explained. "He didn't ask to be part of this war, but even after the spell was broken, he was too prideful to surrender…"

"Sounds like you need a weapon that can defeat a powerful enemy without killing them, correct?" Roy asked.

"Yes," Zelda confirmed, "but where am I supposed to find a—"

"This is the Binding Blade," Roy said, indicating the sword he was carrying. "I used this weapon to defeat a powerful dragon whose soul was destroyed. She was able to begin recovering her soul as a result, all because of this sword… You can borrow it if you want. The war's over back in Elibe, so I don't really need it at the moment."

He held out the sword, and Zelda nervously took hold of it. It certainly felt like a real sword, but how could she know if he was telling the truth about its power? How could a sword even do something like that anyway?

"But it may be my only hope," she thought. "Volga's only hope…"

"Thank you, Roy," Zelda said politely. "But how am I supposed to travel to the past now? The spell opened a portal to your world, but it was supposed to open a door to the past."

"Oh, you need to turn back the hands of time?" Roy replied. "I have someone for that too. Hold on a moment."

He vanished from the room in a flash of light. Startled, Zelda jumped backwards. She had a few seconds to wonder what was happening, when Roy suddenly reappeared alongside a girl with light green hair and impossibly adorable eyes.

"This is Byleth," Roy explained. "She's from another world, and her soul was merged with a goddess, so she has the power to turn back the hands of time. It's called Divine Pulse."

"Hmm, interesting," Zelda noted. "I am descended from a goddess, but I cannot claim to have that kind of power. It is an honor to meet you, Byleth."

In response, Byleth made a sound that Zelda could only describe as a 'burble.'

"Are you ready, Zelda?" Lana asked.

Zelda took a deep breath, and then looked her friend in the eyes.

"Yes," she said.

There was another flash of light, and for some reason the world's colors were inverted, and then Zelda found herself in the middle of that fateful battle, surrounded by warring soldiers on every side.

"Where are you, Volga?" she thought, looking around desperately. "Ah, there!"

Princess Zelda took off sprinting across the battlefield, dodging attacks from enemies as she went. She normally wouldn't run this fast, but this mission called for desperate measures. She had one chance to stop this, to give Volga the ending he deserved, and she could not fail.

She ran up to Volga just as Cia's spell was broken, just as he was about to go into battle with Link…

"NO!" Zelda shrieked at an unholy pitch, swinging the Binding Blade at the Dragon Knight.

"Zelda, what are you doing?!" Link exclaimed.

"Get back, Link!" Zelda replied. "I'll fight him; you go take care of Cia!"

Link didn't like the idea of going anywhere near that woman, but he had found that arguing with Zelda was typically a pointless endeavor, so he did as he was told.

And with that, Princess Zelda proceeded to duel the Dragon Knight in Link's place. However, he was hesitant to fight her, and thus, was easily defeated.

Sure enough, the Binding Blade hadn't killed him. How in Hylia's name that was possible, Zelda didn't know. But maybe it didn't matter.

Volga's eyes opened slowly, scanning his surroundings as he tried to remember what happened. Being brainwashed by Cia had made his memories all fuzzy, but there was one thing he remembered for sure. One thing that had given him hope, even when his mind was controlled by another.

"Finally awake, are you?" remarked a cheerful voice.

Volga sighed with relief, smiling for the first time in quite a while.

"Hello, Princess Zelda," he replied. "How…how did you—"

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you," Zelda answered. "Now…since the war is finally over, do you…I mean—"

"Yes," was Volga's simple reply.

Zelda smiled. Thanks to the help of those strange people from the other worlds and their weird powers she still didn't understand, Volga would finally get the ending he deserved.

The ending they deserved.

(A/N) ...and the ending Zephyr has been wishing for all this time.

Well, I hope you enjoyed that rollercoaster, because I don't plan on writing another one like this! A lot of stuff wasn't explained, but I think I like it better that way. It's not the way I usually write stories, but it works for me in this instance. Of course, the main intention behind the story was to give Zephyr's OTP the happy ending she wanted for them, so I'm not too concerned about how they got there.

I am kind of intrigued by the idea of crossover stories, though, so eventually I may write a longer one and actually try to work out the logistics a little. But it will probably be a while, because I have a lot of other fanfic ideas at the moment, and I'm so lazy it's taking me forever to make any progress on them.

(Seriously though, does ANYONE have cuter eyes than female Byleth?)

Well, that's all United Pizza has to say for now. Stay safe, don't hoard toilet paper, and I hope to see you all again soon!
