Chapter 3: First Encounters

I have been walking east for a week now. The pain of my family's deaths still weighs heavily on me but I have made the decision to continue. The game has gone quiet again. It seems to do that from time to time.

Taking my time to look around me, the jungle is getting thicker and thicker. The trees are getting closer together, the vines stretch from tree to tree, the undergrowth comes up to my waist at some points, plants seem to be smaller but closer together to one another. I have run into a few Man Eaters but using Speak to Plants has made it easier, especially since I have improved my Cha score.

I hunt when I need too, no longer worried about money since it won't do me any good in the wilds. I have decided to divide my days up. Travel, hunt, rest, dungeon, rest. I have been doing this for the last week. It has been working wonders for me. I am gaining levels faster now while also getting more and more of those crystals. Some of which work on a person's affection or their reputation.

Saving those for a later time I have 5 of them as of now. The dungeons have been giving me more items for my primitive crafting. Obsidian, creature bones, and the like have been piling up in my inventory. Leveling up my crafting has been easier. I can now make more items than before and everything I make lasts longer than their normal counterparts.

Right now, I am traveling and I have noticed something that I haven't noticed before. Foot prints of other creatures that I don't recognize.

"These tracks are fairly new."

Looking at the tracks they clearly were from something on two legs and wasn't wearing any footwear. Several toes with small claws on them and there were multiple tracks.

"Whatever it is, it isn't alone and it isn't heavy. Hunters of some kind but hunters of what exactly?"

Pulling out my new Cold One Knife, which was made using the foot claw from a Cold One and wrapping part of it in Snake Skin so I could hold it, I began to track what made the footprints in the wet undergrowth.

"Where are you going and where did you come from?"

The tracks were coming from the north and the creatures seemed to be heading south with some speed. It was headed where I wanted to go so, I might as well track them and see what I may be running into at some point.

Spending a day and a half tracking something is difficult to say the least. Especially when it is an intelligent creature, at least I think it is. One of the creatures was attacked by a snake, which I have begun calling Titanoboa due to its massive size, and devoured if the scene was anything to go by. Several in fact most have been eaten since from the eight I had found once I started tracking there were only two left now.

It took another four days before I finally laid eyes on the creatures and I knew what they were. Large rat like humanoids covered in scrapped together armor, wielding ramshackle swords and knives they looked to be rather lightly equipped.

"Most have come north to scout for their clan. Too bad for them they won't be reporting back."

These Skaven were going to die. I couldn't let them reach where ever it was they were going. Skaven completing anything was bad for the world as a whole.

"Time for an ambush."

The sun had just begun setting which means the jungle was about to became dark in a matter of minutes, especially this deep in.

I knew the approach I was going to take. An ambush from the trees using my bow and obsidian arrows I had made while making use of Animate Plants beforehand so if they tried to flew the jungle would kill them. So I waited, making use of my stealth skill and small frame to move silently around them animating the plants but ordering them to only attack the Skaven if they attempted to flee.

You do know that this will draw attention to you correct?

"Long time no talk, yes I had an idea it would but I need to kill them."

Why is that?

"If they complete whatever they were sent out to do it will ensure the further advancement of whatever they have planned. Also, they don't deserve to live."

And they don't because? They are different? They are evil?

"Because I found them. They should have covered their tracks better if they didn't want to be hunted."

Whatever floats your boat I guess. Just remember for every action there is a reaction.

Huh, that sounded very familiar. Most likely from my past life. No time to think on it I have an ambush to commence.

"Now Skaven, let us see what you are made of."

Casting my spells in silence was hard but they didn't notice. They were eating and making a small fire to warm themselves whilst talking about something.

"Hmm, maybe I will listen in a bit to see what they are saying before I kill them. A hunter should always work with the most information possible to ensure a successful hunt."

Climbing a nearby tree I slowly made my way above them, using the large branches to walk upon and cover myself with. I got close enough to make out what they were saying.

"M m m must hurry south yes yes. Master is not patient."

Its partner nodded. "Of course, we we we will hurry. Jungle dangerous be careful."

So, it seems they had a mission of some kind. Well too bad for them I found them. I doubt they would have made it back anyway. Lustria isn't say safe for anyone, especially these rats.

I watch them start to eat quickly and decided to strike then. Food in mouths with no weapons in hand. Easy prey.

I slowly stood from where I had crouched in the branches. Looking down I gauged the distance and had my knife at the ready. Jumping down, with my knife held in both hands and raised above my head, I hit the closest Skaven right on the top of the head. It only had cloth to protect its head so my knife went straight through the skull with a satisfying crunch as bone shattered.

-480 HP! Critical! Sneak Attack!

"AAAAAAH! P p p pale skin! DIE!" The second Skaven screamed as it lunged forward to wrestle with me.

Letting go of my knife I grabbed my club off my waist and ducked under its arms. Gripping my club in both hands I stepped forward swing as hard as I could into the Skaven's stomach.

-150 HP!

The Skaven screamed as the teeth of the club went straight through its thin leather armor. As it did, I pulled my club while twist my body, ripping the club viciously from its stomach and spilling its innards on the ground.

-600 HP! Disemboweled! Bleeding!

It hit the ground with its knees as it screamed, trying desperately to hold its guts in even as it paled quickly from blood loss before it died with its hands holding onto its destroyed insides. The fight was fast and I didn't need my magic but it was nice as back up.

LEVEL UP: Druid

Damn I was closer than I thought. After the last week I had leveled several times and this was the icing on the cake for me. Now let me see where I left off.

Name: Sigmund Kossmann

Race: Human (Half Imperial, Half Norscan)

Level: 24

Class Level: Druid 24/100 (0%)

Profession: Hunter 22/100 (78%)

HP = 850 [Regen 170 HP a minute]

SP = 850 [Regen 340 SP a minute]

MP = 2640 [Regen 528 MP a minute]

(Dex – 120)

(End – 85)

(Int – 162) +6

(Wis – 211) +8

(Cha – 50)

(Lck – 50)

(HP = End X10/Regen X2) (SP = End X10/Regen X4) (MP = Int X20/Regen X4)

Stat points: 60

"I totally forgot about my points didn't I... need to remember to use them when I get them."

You also have eight stat crystals to use..

"Yeah yeah I got it. I'll use them first then decide where to put my points."

"Inventory"

Inventory:

Snake Skins x12

Snake Fangs x25

Cold One Skins x5

Cold One Leather x2

Cold One Teeth x19

Cold One Foot Claw x16

Cold One Claw x14

Obsidian Stone x32

Feathers x35

Stat Crystals: (Str x2) (End x1) (Int x2) (Lck x3)

Heart Crystals x5

Using them all was lovely as I watch my stats rise on their own before I began putting in more points.

Stat points: 60

Looking everything over I decided on putting 14 into Str, 10 End, 22 Int, and 14 into Cha. I'm trying to not let any of my stats become too low as they each have a use and it could be fatal to leave them alone.

My stats allocated this is now what I am working with.

Name: Sigmund Kossmann

Race: Human (Half Imperial, Half Norscan)

Level: 24

Class Level: Druid 24/100 (0%)

Profession: Hunter 22/100 (78%)

Stat points: 0

"Now that is looking a lot better. I may end up dumping more points into Int and Wis after I get all the others to a 100 stat minimum."

Why is that?

"Having a 100 minimum will be a good benchmark. It is where I get new perks and a solid and even base from which to grow from later. I mean I don't plan on not upping them put a few levels of just dumping into my class favored stats could help tremendously as my new spells start costing and doing more damage."

Huh, not a bad way to look at it. Here you go.

+1 Wis for making sense to me.

"Hell yeah for even numbers."

I feel like I am missing something. Looking at the character sheet I notice the Perks tab is flashing.

"Oh that's rights, new perks! I really need to keep up on that."

Perks Gained!

Lvl 100 End:

[Strong Constitution]

Health and Stamina totals now increased by 50%!

Lvl 200 Int:

[A Smart Man]

All Intelligence gains are increased by 50%!

Lvl 200 Wis:

[A Wise Man]

All Wisdom gains are increased by 50%!

Those two perks are broken. Like holy shit those are broken!

"Wait...doesn't that mean I should have a high Wis score then?"

No. You didn't check the perks so they weren't active. Make sure you keep up to date on all your perks you idiot.

"Ouch, harsh. Oh well at least I have them now."

Looking back to those perks they are all amazing. The benefits are going to be huge in the long run. Though I should get back to searching these Skaven. A task I do not really want to do but they could have something with them worth keeping.

Checking them over, which is disgusting by the way, I find nothing really out of the ordinary. Must have been something they saw and would only speak about when they got back to where they were going. Oh well, no skin off my teeth. Looking over the Skaven a rather sinister idea comes to mind, something I had seen in my previous life I'm guessing.

I began skinning the Skaven I had killed. It takes some time to skin the fuckers and do it right but I managed. Gathering some vines, I tied the vines around their freshly skinned legs like ropes then climb the tree with each one. They weigh less without their skin and equipment so it wasn't too bad. After getting about 50ft from the ground I tied the other ends off around the thick branches so that their skinned bodies dangle from the vines.

It isn't going to hold forever but it should serve as a good warning to anymore Skaven that come through the area. That warning being "You are being hunted."

"Well that was morbid but I don't feel bad about it. Fucking Skaven."

Good movie..

"What?"

Don't worry about it.

"Whatever you say big guy."

Well better get back to traveling. Sooner I am into Lustria proper the sooner I can face these "Trials" the better.

Turning south, I took my leave.

-Skaven-

His master had sent him north yes yes. To find the lost patrol. Need to find so they might know what to expect of enemies. The Skaven, assassin of Clan Eshin, made his way north looking for lost ones.

"Master is impatiant. Fools must be lost lost."

He tracked their movements north until he finally found a camp site only to find the skin and equipment of patrol.

"Something killed them yes yes, but what?"

He felt something wet drop onto his shoulder. Jumping back, he drew his daggers and look up expecting an attack. Only instead of an attack he saw two skinned Skaven in the tree above him.

"Killed, not by animals or scaled ones."

He climbed the tree and lowered the bodies to see what had done it.

"Claw yes, that is what took the skin."

Taking his time, he looked them over to see one had been disemboweled while the other had the top of their skull cracked with something penetrating into the brain.

"Ambushed yes yes. Killed quickly and ruthlessly. Good work yes yes."

Looking around he saw very faint foot prints in the jungle floor. Small, too small for scaled ones. It wore something on its feet. Pink skin, human, must be.

"Clever human, strong, merciless, make good assassin if Skaven."

Looking at the tracks they made their way deeper into the jungle, southwards.

"Why pink skin go south? Fight with scaled ones? No no pink ones and scaled ones fight against not with yes yes."

Ibegan tracking this pink skin. It had left some time ago. Days at least and had a head start.

"Need to find pink skin and see if it knows what they knew yes yes."

The assassin began his hunt for the human that had killed its kind. It needed to see what it knew before killing it.

-Sigmund-

It had been nearly a week since he had killed those Skaven and ever since he felt something. Not sure as to what it was, he decided to pick up his pace. Only going into dungeons every other day to make sure he had plenty of time to travel.

"I know this feeling. Something is coming after me. Something or someone is hunting me."

That was it. The familiar feeling of being hunted.

"Could be an animal or it could be another Skaven. Whatever it is I will make sure to end it. I am the Hunter not the hunted."

Finally coming into a small clearing he moved as silently as he could, looking around as he did he could see tall mountains in front of him.

"The Spine of Sotek. So, I am finally here. Now to see what trials await me."

Taking another look at the clearing he saw a small herd of Bastiladons grazing. It was rather peaceful to watch until a thunderous roar split the air and out of the jungle to his right a mighty Carnosaur charged at one of the outlying Bastiladons.

Some of the herd scattered while others grouped together. The Carnosaur took after those that left on their own. Closing the distance, it smashed into the side of a lone Bastiladon causing it to stumble before regaining its footing and turning towards its attacker.

The Bastiladon roared back in defiance before swinging its mighty tail at its attacker. The Carnosaur must have been an experienced hunter though. It seemed to anticipate the attack, stepping back the tail missed giving the Carnosaur the chance to counter attack. As soon as the tail was coming back the Carnosaur lunged forward and bite down on the side of one of the armored plates of the Bastiladon's back then using its arms it lifted.

Watching as the Bastiladon rolled onto its back I knew it was over. That Carnosaur fought smarter than I had anticipated and was definitely going to be eating well tonight. Though now I have to be careful lest such a beast decides to come looking for a snack later on.

"One day Carno, one day that strength will be mine. Just as all of Lustria's strength will be."

The power I needed was literally in front of me. These creatures were used by the Children of the Old Ones after all they had to be fierce and powerful. Once I was ready, I would send such beasts against Skeggi and watch as they tore it apart in primal fury. I would tear the ground asunder and darken the skies with wrathful storms.

Nothing was going to stop me. Not man, beast, or the Gods themselves.

Quest Added:

[Apex Predator]

Tame or control the mightiest hunters of Lustria.

Objective: Tame or Control a Carnosaur, Troglodon, or a Dread Saurian.

Reward: Ability to summon the creature(s) through spells. +5 Druid Levels. +10 Rep with ? And ?

Failure: A gruesome death and becoming food to an Apex Predator.

"Lovely but for now I need to become stronger."

That you do. Though it would be funny to see you try now.

"I don't intend on dying right now so that is a no."

Going back to watching the Carnosaur eat I figured now was the time to head out and continue south till I reached the Spine of Sotek. I could set up a home for myself there. Then I could train and begin to gather an army for myself. Though I would need to be very careful, the fact the Skaven were around was worrying and that would mean so would the Lizardmen.

"Perhaps if I managed to appease or gain the support of the Lizardmen it would make my revenge against Skeggi easier..."

Now that was a dangerous line of thought since they were as likely to kill me as they were to give me a chance at communication. Though if I completed my new quest it would give me an in. No human to my knowledge as ever tamed a creature of Lustria.

Taking off to the south again, I stuck to the edge of the jungle around this clearing. I wanted to see where the Carno left once it was done while giving me enough cover to hide if need be. In the end it was still eating by the time I made it to the other side. Once I was on the other side I picked my pace back up and set off towards the mountains.

-Two Weeks Later-

"Im finally here. The Spine of Sotek."

The mountains themselves were huge. The tips pierced the clouds and the jungle itself crawled nearly half way up them. I could see waterfalls from certain spots. There must have been lakes up there somewhere though I would have to wait till later to go there. I didn't want to get killed by Ripperdactyls or Terradons after all.

I made myself a small camp not too far from a swamp that had been made by one of the waterfalls. It would take about an hour to get there from my camp but the spot I found was perfect. Large trees all around with thick underbrush. A small cave that I could call my own, after I had killed the Salamander that called it home. It wasn't in the talking mood, more like the eating my pale ass mood.

*Crack*

Whipping my head around towards the jungle I began to look for what had made the noise but see nothing.

"Seems like my hunter has finally found me. Let's see how he likes becoming the hunted. "

Casting Control Insects I send out the insects around me to find whatever is lurking in the trees. Pulling out my Cold One Club, I began a slow march into the jungle to begin my own hunt.

It took about five minutes to find the hunter and to my surprise it is a Skaven. I didn't know they could be these stealthy when it suited them but then again, they are rats. Ordering my insects to chase it out of the trees and towards me I decide to lay an ambush of my own. Casting Animate Plants on the nearby underbrush and vines I lie in wait.

-Eshin Assassin-

"This one is smart. I made mistake, broke branch on tree. Pink skin knows I am here. Disappeared into underbrush."

Bugs, lots of bugs are coming. He sees them moving toward him. Unnaturally coordinated the Eshin Assassin must move away from them. Hooping down from tree branch to tree branch they are forcing him from his vantage point.

"Pink Skin hiding below yes yes. Bugs will force me to fight him. Can Pink Skin control insects? No no. Magic doesn't work like that yes yes?"

Moving quickly, the assassin found himself on the ground. Looking for Pink Skin will be difficult but I am Eshin. No one is quicker or quieter than Eshin. He will find Pink Skin and make it talk before he has kill it.

"Perhaps I capture? Yes yes Master be happy if I bring Pink Skin with magic to ex ex experiment on."

Looking around the assassin begin moving away from bugs. Don't want them to bite and sting. Very dangerous bugs in Scaled Ones lands.

-Sigmund-

"Come on you rat faced son of thousand whores, come to me.."

The Skaven is moving towards me at a quick pace but its eyes are darting around. Trying to locate where I am hiding.

"Good luck with that. I made sure the underbrush would cover me completely."

As it draws closer, I lunge out at the Skaven, club in hand, I swing in a downward motion hoping that I could connect with its lightly armored head and kill it in one hit. Fate had other plans though because the Skaven turned towards me as soon as I moved and used two wicked looking daggers to catch my strike.

"Yes yes! This one is viscious! Make good Skaven!"

"Damn! I was hoping it wouldn't be so skilled!"

The two daggers I noted had something covering them, poisons of some kind. I need to make sure that I don't get hit or I will be in for a world of hurt.

Jumping back, I mentally order my insects to converge and kill it. It will take a minute for them but some of the flying insects should be here in a matter of seconds. Large wasp like creatures with stingers longer than my fingers were going to be bringing a lot of serious pain to the Skaven. It won't be able to fight me and avoid all the insects.

"Well come on then you rat fuck. Come and see how vicious I can be before I skin you and hang you from the trees!"

The fucking Skaven growled at me as it lunged forward. Bringing both of its daggers to bare I only managed to hold off its initial strike because I was ready. What I wasn't ready for was how nimble the bastard was. It was hoping and sliding around trying to get its daggers to cut or stab into my legs to immobilize me.

"Smart rat.."

I once again was forced to parry the daggers as it made another series of small quick cuts and stabs towards my legs. I didn't have time to retaliate since my club was slower moving than his daggers and if I over reached it would spell my doom. Luckily my wasps were about to join the fray. I sent another mental command to the animated plants to make sure if the rat tried to leave it would be cut off.

*Bzzzzzzzt!*

And there they are! Dozens of wasps, each nearly the size of my head, descended on the Skaven. I could see its eyes widen slightly as it took note of how they ignored me to strike at him. As he cut them out of the air, I began my counter attack. I would swing at his legs and arms to keep it off balance and make it harder for it to attack my wasps.

"AAAAAAAH!"

One of the wasps managed to get him in the back of his right shoulder before he turned and dispatched it with his dagger. It was effective though I could see the pain in his eyes and he was slowing down.

I rushed forward swinging at his left arm forcing him to intercept it with both arms though as my blow connected, I could see his right arm buckle. I put more strength into it and pushed him back just in time for three more wasps to descend and hit his back twice and his left leg.

"AAAAAAAAAAH! THIS ONE WILL KILL YOU YES YES!" The Skaven roared at me.

"YOU WILL DIE TRYING!" I roared right back.

It lunged at me in a furry matched only by corned animals. It brought both daggers to bare once again but was moving far more sluggishly than before which I capitalized on. The dagger in its left arm went for my throat as the right went towards the inside of my leg. It was hoping to either make me bleed out or kill me instantly.

I used my Leap skill to bound upwards and over. As I did, I swung my club into the inside of his left arm, breaking the bone as I did with a satisfying snap. I had to flip my body forward as I did to get the right angle in but I managed to complete the flip and land behind him. As I landed, I heard it begin screaming as dozens of wasps had converged on the weakened Skaven.

It was flailing with its arms as best it could but the wasps wouldn't be denied. They stung the Skaven again and again. I think I stopped counting after I got to a hundred. The Skaven laid there, bleeding from multiple wounds and foaming at the mouth. It wasn't pretty to look at but then again there is no such thing as a pretty Skaven.

I ended my Animate Plants spell and sent my wasps away to search and kill any other Skaven they encountered. Walking forward, I went to the downed Skaven and rolled him off of his back. That was a mistake. It apparently had one final death throe.

As I rolled it over its left arm flung forward and sent its dagger into my stomach.

-300HP! (700/1000)

"AAGH! YOU RAT BASTARD!"

I was lucky I wasn't poisoned though. It spent too much time swinging and killing the wasps that I didn't get enough to affect me. Still hurt like a bitch though.

"Son of bitch!" I snarled through clenched teeth. "That is definitely going to scar!"

As I pulled the dagger out it took everything I had to not scream in agony. It had hit my stomach and cut my intestines.

-400HP! (300/1000)

"Note to fucking self don't just pull a weapon out with brute force. It fucking hurts!"

I could have told you that..

"Quiet you! I am in pain and don't need you to be snippy with me!"

Yeah yeah whatever. Just stop being a wuss and get back to camp so you can heal.

I'd rather not have you die this early.

"Oh goody. He likes me he really likes me!" I laced as much sarcasm as my pain would allow into that.

Oh well. I lifted my club up again and brought it down into its neck. I didn't want to crush its skull. Oh no I am keeping that. Tough bastard, if I had fought him straight on with no plan, I would be dead no doubt about it. Still gonna skin him and leave his ass in the trees though. A little warning for any other Skaven that happen to come across my domain.

"Hmm maybe I'll make a scarecrow out of his skin.." Saying that out loud sounded way more disturbing than I thought. "Yeah maybe I won't. Skinning him and leaving him out to dry should more than suffice."

It took some time but I managed to skin his body and sever his head. I made sure to do the same with the others and use vines that I wound up like ropes to make sure it would hold the weight for long periods of time. Then I went about cleaning the skull up. Cleaning it off of all the blood and making sure that the brain and everything else inside was pulled out.

"Well I got my first real Skaven trophy." Looking down at the skull. "Maybe I could add it to my attire."

Looking down at my clothing, it had been ripped and torn through my travels south. Made of the skin and scales of creatures I had killed on my trip south I figured I could the head to guard one of my shoulders. I could use bones to make armor after all thanks to my hunter skill. It wouldn't be as durable as steel or any metal really but I would serve in a pinch and I didn't have any metal or the blacksmith profession to work with.

Hell, I didn't even know where to get any metal unless I decided to start mining. I might get a Druid skill that will help me with that though. Food for thought.

After I got the body up in the tree and the skull cleaned, I headed back to my cave to rest. I would do another dungeon dive after I rested. That negative I had gotten was slowly being overcome thanks to my high Wisdom score but the other negatives I had no way to counter as of yet.

"I will probably have to level up my Luck score to do that." I whispered to myself as I made my way to my new home for the time being.

When I finally got back, I noticed something else was amiss. There were more foot prints but these weren't Skaven or any of the other creatures I had run into. They were as big as mine but they were no footwear and had claws at the end of their toes.

"Shit. I didn't think the Lizardmen would already have found my camp." Looking around as I spoke, I didn't see, hear, or feel anything or anyone watching me. Maybe it was a patrol that was looking for the Skaven.

"Looks like I am going to have to spend a lot of time in the dungeon to level up. I don't want to be caught unaware again. Especially if they found me." I made my way into my cave, looking around nothing had been disturbed. It looked like a predator's home with all the different bones strewn about.

Most predators though didn't keep rolls of snake skins and cold one leather lying around. They definitely know that something else lives here.

"Well I better rest while I can then get to leveling."

Good call. Now that they know that something lives here, they will start watching this area.

You better up your game now.

"You're right about that. I need to complete the Apex Predator quest if I am to have any chance around here now. Perhaps a Troglodon would be best. If my knowledge is correct they are seen as sacred and those who bond with them are seen as having the favor of their gods."

I had a plan now. Spend my times training so I could tame a Troglodon. Hunting only when I need too and maybe I could gain allies or at least be left alone. Though maybe I should set up a shrine to Sotek. He hates Skaven and if I began to sacrifice any I came across he might just look over me being a warm blood.

"Well Sotek. I hope you don't mind but you are going to be getting a warm blood as a worshipper."

I was really hoping he wouldn't mind. I guess I will find out soon enough.

AN: Well that is another chapter done. I have run into a serious problem though. The only things to talk to here are the Game and his enemies. It is going to be annoying to just describe everything all the time and I think that will be boring.

This chapter is shorter than the last but without having dialogue it is a pain to keep the story going in an interesting manner. He might end up leaving Warhammer sooner rather than later but we will see how that plays out.

I also want to thank everyone for their reviews, follows, and favs. Hell, even if you just read it and think its trash. As long as you took the time to look, I am thankful. Also, for those who didn't like me going with the dead family trope and killing them off so early. I flipped a coin. They died because of a coin flip and the story would have taken a completely different turn if they hadn't. One I had planned for but oh well.

Thanks for reading and I will see everyone next time on Gamer of the Wild!
