Epilogue
Ana POV
Bliss. That's one of the words I would use to describe my life for the past few months. Christian and I got married on the beach in Malibu, and my life has been exceptional ever since. We spent a week on Christian's boat anchored out on Elliott Bay, and the weather couldn't have been better. We indulged in each other on every available surface, among other things.
Gail made sure there was enough food to eat, with Christian and me taking turns cooking. It was so lovely spending time alone, without any interruptions. I hated to return to work, but we both needed to get back to GEH.
I stare out my office window, unable to wipe the smile off of my face.
"I hope that smile means you are thinking about me," Christian's deep voice causes me to turn my head in his direction. I smile at him as he walks around my desk and greets me with a kiss.
"Mmm," I hum against his lips.
"Well? What has you smiling so big?" His hands rest on the arms of my chair as I take his face in my hands.
"You are the reason I am unable to wipe this smile off of my face. I am so thankful you are my husband. I love you, Christian." His hands hold onto my upper arms as he pulls me out of my seat and up against him. I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him deeply.
Our kiss breaks apart as we both need air. His nose rubs against mine as he continues to hold me close. "I need to come to your office more often." I giggle and rest my head against his chest.
"You are welcome in my office anytime. What can I do for you?" I ask, and he presses his erection into me. I look at him, trying to be offended but end up laughing.
"You had me twice this morning. You are insatiable," I say, and he kisses me again.
"I wanted to come, say hello to my wife. Do I need any other reason than that?" He smiles, and I shake my head, no. "Do you have plans for lunch?" He asks while running his fingers through my hair.
"No, I don't have lunch plans. What would you like to do?" I see his reaction, and I pull out of his arms. "Oh, no mister. The last time we had sex in your office, I think the entire floor heard me."
"I can't help the intercom activated on my desk phone. Your sexy body had me completely distracted. No one said anything about hearing us." I give him an incredulous look.
"Who is going to say something to the boss about fucking his wife over his desk? I could tell by the look on Andrea's face she heard everything. I was so embarrassed." I blush, still remembering it like it was yesterday.
"I need to get back upstairs and prepare for a conference call. I will see you at lunch," he kisses my lips, and I smack his backside when he walks away.
I sit back in my and chair and open my bottom desk drawer and grab a piece of chocolate from my stash. A few weeks ago, I had a chocolate craving and asked my assistant to pick some up while she was at lunch.
"Mrs. Grey, do you have a few minutes to go over your schedule for this week?" Hannah asks while standing at the door to my office. I wave her in, and she sits in the chair across from my desk. She types away on her iPad while we discuss some upcoming meetings. I put another piece of chocolate in my mouth, and Hannah stares.
"Is that the same bag I bought a few weeks ago?" She asks innocently. I shake my head no slowly as I chew the creamy chocolate. My mouth waters as my taste buds appreciate the decadence. Hannah's eyes widen, and I stay silent for a few minutes.
"It's the third bag," I whisper. Hannah tries to hide a smile as she shakes her head.
"If I didn't know better, I would think you are pregnant. I had chocolate cravings at the beginning of my first pregnancy." I nearly choke at her comment. I think about when I had my last period, and I realize I haven't had one since before the wedding. I feel sick all of a sudden, but don't throw up.
"Mrs. Grey, are you alright? You've gone pale." Hannah stands up and walks around my desk. I look up at her, and her eyes widen. I place my hand over my mouth in disbelief. How could this have happened? Well, I know where babies come from, but how did I get pregnant?
"Mrs. Grey, do you want me to call Mr. Grey?" I shake my head.
"No, I need to go home. There is nothing on my schedule this afternoon, right?" Hannah confirms that my afternoon is open, so I start to clear my desk and put some papers in my briefcase. I text Luke that I will be leaving soon, and he responds that he will be in my office shortly. I ask him not to say anything to Taylor or Christian. I will handle it.
A few minutes later, we are in the elevator going down to the garage. I lean my head back in disbelief. How am I going to explain this to Christian? We both want children, eventually. The elevator door opens, and Luke escorts me to the SUV.
During the ride back to Escala, I recall the conversation I had with my gynecologist about switching birth control. I then had an IUD in place, and it was on the borderline of needing to be removed or replaced. She recommended I go with the shot. I followed her advice and still ended pregnant.
I arrive at the penthouse, and Gail is in the kitchen, making a grocery list. "Ana? Are you okay? You normally aren't here at this time during the day. Would you like me to fix you some lunch?" She puts her pen and paper away and waits for me to respond.
"I'm sorry to surprise you, Gail. I decided to work from home this afternoon. A club sandwich is fine with me. I was wondering if you could do me a favor when you go out?" I ask, and she nods her head.
"Of course, Ana. What would you like me to do?" I bite my lip thinking about the best way to bring it up. Instead, I just come out and say what is going on.
"It was brought my attention that I haven't had a period in almost three months. I need to take a few pregnancy tests to make sure. Mr. Grey doesn't know yet, so I would appreciate it if you kept this between us for now?" Gail's eyes are wide with surprise, and she smiles.
"Of course! Let me fix you a light lunch, and may I suggest a warm bath afterward?"
"A warm bath sounds perfect. It will give me a chance to think about how to tell Christian." I sit on a stool and watch Gail fix lunch. When we first moved in, she insisted on calling me, Mrs. Grey. I had to beg her to call me Ana.
"Here you go, dear. Is there anything special you would like for dinner tonight?"
"Chicken stew would be wonderful, thank you." I tuck into my lunch as she leaves for the store.
I add a small amount of lavender bath oil to the water and watch it fill as I undress. I reach down and rub my hands around my tummy like I used to do when I was pregnant with Phoebe. I feel a small bump, so I walk to the mirror and look at my reflection. I turn to the side and see my lower abdomen slightly protruding. I giggle to myself and wonder why I didn't notice it before.
I sink into the warm bubbles and lay my head back on the tub. I don't think Christian will be upset about me being pregnant. We have talked about having a baby, and I'm still young enough to have one without any complications.
I finish my bath and put on a robe. I hear Gail knock on the bedroom door, and I call for her to come in.
She hands me a brown paper bag, "Here you go, dear. Jason said Mr. Grey is worried about you. He said you never work from home. I thought I would warn you that he intends to come home right after his conference call."
"Thank you, Gail." She leaves the room, and I stare at the bag in my hand. I haven't taken one of these in eighteen years. I mentally count back and realize the baby could be born around the Fourth of July. I open the bag and see five tests. I chuckle, removing one and setting it on the bathroom sink.
I take care of business in a disposable cup, then wash my hands. I remove the test from the box with shaky fingers. I don't know why I'm so nervous. Maybe it's the excitement? I dip the test in the cup and set it aside, flushing the remnants and throwing the cup away. I grab my phone from the bedside table and set a timer for three minutes.
I see several missed calls and text messages from Christian. After I set the timer, he calls me again. "Hello?" I answer softly.
"Ana? Baby? Are you sick? Your assistant told me you went home before lunch. Do you need me to come home now?" He sounds agitated and breathless.
"No, sweetheart. Everything is fine. I didn't have any meetings this afternoon, so I came home. I'm sorry I didn't message you earlier. Can you come home when your meeting is over?" I hear a commotion in the background and then his voice telling everyone the meeting is over.
"I'm coming home right now. To hell with this meeting. It has been a total waste of time anyway. I'll be home in ten minutes. I love you, Ana." I smile and look toward the bathroom.
"I love you, Christian. See you when you get here." I end the call, and the timer is complete. Since Christian is on the way, I decide to wait until he gets home to see the results. I walk out to the kitchen, and Gail is finishing up her stew.
"Keep it on low, and it will be ready to eat at dinner time. I assume Jason and Christian are on the way home now?" I smile and nod my head.
"Yes, he blew off the call and will be here in ten minutes. Thank you for everything, Gail." I walk over and hug her neck tightly.
"Oh, dear, it's nothing. Really. I enjoy taking care of you and Mr. Grey. Let me know if you need anything. Right now, I'm going to make myself scarce." I giggle, and she smiles in return.
As soon as she enters her apartment, I hear the elevator ding with an arrival. "ANA?" Christian yells. "Ana, baby, where are you?" He runs into the living room, and I turn to face him.
Without saying a word, I walk to him and put my hands on his cheeks. I can feel his pulse racing in his neck, and he'd removed his tie. His hair is standing on end, and if he didn't look so scared, I would laugh at him. I pull his face to me and cover his lips with mine. He wraps his arms around my waist and draws me closer. We kiss for a few beats, and I pull away.
"Are you sure everything is okay? You have never left during the day to work from home." At this point, he realizes I am still wearing a bathrobe. "Did you take a bath?" He asks while nuzzling his nose with mine.
"Mm-hmm," I answer. "There is something I need to show you." I take his hand and lead him to the bedroom.
"I hope it's whatever you have underneath that robe," he says seductively. I don't answer him, but continue walking to the bedroom. Once we get inside, I shut the door and flip the lock. He starts removing his clothes, and I shake my head no.
"Not yet. There is something I need to show you first, okay? Can you sit on the bed?" He looks at me, confusion filling his face but does as I ask.
I stand arms-length away, knowing if he sees me naked, his mind will not stay where I need him right now. I untie my robe and let it fall from my shoulders. He eyes me from head to toe, then back up to my eyes.
"Ana-"I put my finger on his lips before he says anything else.
"Have you noticed anything about me over the past month or so?" I ask, giving him the chance to make the observation. He narrows his eyes, then moves them down my body again. I take his hand and place it on my lower abdomen. He stares at my tummy, then his eyes shoot to mine, wide with surprise.
"Are you pregnant?" He asks in a whisper.
"Well, my assistant made a statement today, and it got me thinking. I haven't had a period since we got married. I attributed it to changing forms of birth control, but as you can feel, that's not the case." My eyes water, and he stands, pulling me into his arms.
"Oh, baby." He says in a choked voice. "Have you taken a test?" He asks when he pulls back.
"I took one earlier, but when you said you were on the way home, I decided we could see the results together," I say, and he smiles his megawatt smile. He reaches down and picks up my robe off the floor, then helps me put it on.
"Ready to see if we will be parents, Mrs. Grey?" I nod, and he takes my hand, leading us into the bathroom. I took the test that lists Pregnant or Not Pregnant in the display, just to remove any doubt. Christian picks up the test and reads the words out loud. "Pregnant." We both have tears in our eyes as we hug each other tightly.
Christian places the test on the sink and kisses softly, then he gets down on his knees, opening the front of my robe. He kisses the spot where our child is safely resting. He stands up and kisses me again.
"We can talk about all of the specifics later. Right now, I want to make love to my wife and the mother of my child." He picks me up bridal style and walks over to the bed. For the rest of the afternoon, he takes his time kissing my entire body and making slow, sweet love.
We are eating Gail's chicken stew for dinner, and Christian asks when we will tell Phoebe and Ted. "I called Dr. Green and made an appointment for tomorrow afternoon. We can either tell them tonight or tell them tomorrow once everything is confirmed. I'm okay with either." I take a drink of water as Christian nods his head.
"Let's wait until tomorrow evening. Maybe go out to eat to celebrate?" I shake my head, no.
"Phoebe will be over the moon, excited. I don't want to draw unnecessary attention to us. The press is finally leaving us alone. If they get wind of my pregnancy, it will be hell."
"Oh, yes. Good point. I will see if Gail can fix a nice dinner for the four of us. What would you like?" He runs his fingertip down my cheek, and I feel myself blush.
"I'm sure whatever Gail fixes will be fabulous. We can ask her tomorrow morning at breakfast?" I clean up our dirty dishes and meet Christian on the couch.
"Where are they anyway? Ted and Phoebe?" I sit next to Christian, and he puts his arm around me. I snuggle my body into his and explain the basketball game they are attending.
"So, have you had any sickness at all?" Christian asks before kissing my forehead.
"No, none. I have been tired lately, but I attributed it to the mass amounts of work my boss has me doing. She's a slave driver." Christian laughs.
"Yes, she is a hard ass. Would you like for me to talk to her?"
"No, I'm kidding. Ros is the best boss I've ever had. She leaves me alone and lets me do my job without looking over my shoulder all the time. We will need to tell her about me, though."
"We can tell her together once we know everything. How does that sound?"
"Perfect, Mr. Grey." I tuck my head under his chin, and the steady rhythm of his heartbeat lulls me to sleep.
The next afternoon, we are in the waiting room to see Dr. Green. She is running behind, and Christian is getting irritated. I put my hand on his knee in an attempt to settle him down. "Christian, it's fine. We should go back soon." He looks at me and takes my hand.
"I know. I just get uptight when the office schedules an appointment, and the doctor ends up being late. I'm not going to rush through this so that she can get caught up." Before I can answer, a nurse appears and takes us back.
"Mrs. Grey, I need you to take this into the restroom and fill it to the line. There is a slot for you to slide it in. Come to room five when finished." The nurse hands me a clear cup wrapped in plastic, and I walk into the restroom.
"I'll be right out, you can wait in the room if you want," I tell Christian, but he shakes his head.
"I will wait here." I smile and shut the door.
After taking care of that, we walk hand in hand to room five. The nurse follows us in and goes through the process of asking me questions. When was your last period? Have you had any symptoms? I finish answering her, and she takes my vital signs. Then she hands me the paper gown to change into and leaves us alone in the room.
"Are you nervous?" I ask Christian when he sits down in the chair. His face is pale, and he looks like he could throw up.
"No, I'm worried. What if something is wrong or something goes wrong? I can't lose you, Ana." I lay the gown in the table and stand in front of Christian. Taking his face in my hands, I speak softly.
"Everything will be fine, Christine. Women do this all of the time. If there is something wrong, technology and medical advancements can mostly likely remedy it. Please don't stress until there is something to stress about, alright?" He nods his head and buries it in my tummy.
I run my fingers through his hair for a few minutes, then pull away to get changed. I sit on the side of the table, and we stare at each other until Dr. Green comes in.
"Good afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Grey. I'm sorry to keep you waiting. I had to perform an emergency C-section this morning, and I haven't been able to catch my appointments up. The urine test produced a positive pregnancy. Do you think you are more than six weeks along?" I nod my head.
"I haven't had a period since I got the shot," I say, and she flips through my chart, cursing under her breath.
"You should have received a call from my office. Your shot was one of a batch that came from the manufacturer as a failure. I'm sorry, Mrs. Grey." She looks between Christian and me, for what I don't know. Maybe conflict or unease?
"It's alright, Dr. Green. We are over the moon excited about it," I answer with enthusiasm.
"Okay then, lay back on the table and let me measure you. Have you noticed any changes in your body?"
"I have noticed a bump on my lower abdomen. I didn't even notice it until my assistant told me she got a big chocolate craving when she was pregnant. I have been eating a little more chocolate over the past month." Dr. Green grins and looks at my chart.
"Your weight is fine, just eat it sparingly." She winks and makes a few notes on my chart. "Based on your last period, I will do a regular ultrasound today and have some bloodwork drawn. I will be back in a few minutes." Dr. Green leaves the room, and Christian breaks the silence.
"So chocolate is the first thing you have been craving?" He smiles, and I shrug.
"I can't help it. It tastes delicious. I will try to do better and not eat so much. Maybe I should give you my stash, so when I have a craving, I can come to see you."
Dr. Green comes back in the room, pushing the ultrasound machine. "Okay, let's get some jelly on your belly and see what we have." She exposes my tummy and squirts some gel on it. She turns the machine on and places the wand on my lower abdomen, quickly finding something. "There." She turns the volume up, and the sound of our baby's heartbeat fills the room.
I gasp and start crying. Christian squeezes my hand, then kisses my lips. "I love you so much, Ana."
"Well, it looks like we have two heartbeats." Oh hell.
"What the fuck?" Christian yells. "Two babies?" I turn my head to the screen, and sure enough, there are two small round sacs on the screen.
"Yes, Mr. Grey. There are two babies in there. If you look closely, you can see their hearts beating together in time. Based on their size, I put you about eight weeks along, Ana. Would you like some pictures printed?" My emotions are in my throat, and I am only able to nod.
"I'll be damned. Honeymoon babies." Christian says, laughing. "When will we be able to tell the sex?" He asks Dr. Green.
"Usually around twenty weeks is when we schedule a 3D ultrasound. You can see the baby's features more clearly. Make an appointment with the receptionist when you leave. I want to see you in four weeks," Dr. Green explains. I wouldn't put it past Christian to buy an ultrasound machine to keep in the penthouse.
"That sounds perfect, Dr. Green." I am beaming as she leaves the room. I am giddy with excitement as I change. Christian is sitting in the chair with a blank stare on his face.
"Christian, are you alright?" I lean over him and run my finger along his cheek. His eyes meet mine, and the scared look is back.
"Twins?" He says barely above a whisper. I nod, smiling.
"Yes, baby. Twins. Can you believe it?" He smiles a panty-melting smile and kisses me softly.
"How do you want to tell the kids?" He helps me get dressed, and we walk hand in hand to the reception desk. After setting the next appointment, we sit in the back of the SUV holding onto each other.
"Maybe we should present everything in twos? Two pizzas, Two individual flowers on the table, two candles on the table, and two ice cream tubs?" I say, hoping he missed the part about ice cream.
"Chocolate ice cream?" He asks, and I nod. "Okay, we can set up the table with two of everything and see if they can guess what it means. I can't believe we are having twins." He says, shaking his head in disbelief. "I must have some super sperm." I place my hand on his crotch.
"Did you know that pregnant women get extremely horny? I hope you won't get tired of meeting my demands for sex." He smiles and kisses me hard. Our kiss quickly becomes indecent, and if we had a long ride back home, I would straddle him right here in the back seat.
"Ana, baby. We are at home. We can continue this upstairs." He says before kissing my neck, then biting my ear lobe. I gasp as his action sends sparks of desire to my sex.
"I can't wait. I want you now." I remember I am wearing pants, instead of a skirt and stop.
"You must have realized you have on pants instead of a skirt." Christian laughs, and I push off his body. I sit with my arms cross, pouting. "Baby, don't pout. I will take care of you upstairs. And don't worry, I will never get tired of fucking you." He opens the door, getting out, and reaches back for my hand. I take it and slide out after him.
"I will hold you to that." I smile as we board the elevator. I wonder if we will be living here when the babies are born? I can't imagine Christian wanting to live in an apartment instead of a house with a yard. That is one of the many things we will be talking about over the next few months.
"I know. I think mom misses Ted and Ava being toddlers. How are we going to keep up with two little terrors?" Christian asks and kisses the top of my head.
"Do you want to live here or look for a house? I would like for them to have a yard to play in when they get bigger. There is not much they will be able to do here once they can walk."
"We will be looking for a house with a huge yard and plenty of space. There are some nice houses near my parent's place. I can get in contact with a realtor and get things moving along?" He questions me, thinking I don't want to live near his parents. The truth is, I wouldn't mind it one bit.
"Are you sure you want to live close to your parents? I don't have an issue with it. I will leave it up to you and whatever the realtor can find for us. Come on, let's get things ready for the kids. They will be home soon."
We spend the next little bit decorating the table for dinner. Two small teddy bears have balloons tied to them sitting in empty chairs. There are two tealight candles resting side by side near a vase of flowers in the middle of the table. On one end of the table, there are two pizzas with pepperonis forming a letter B on each one. We have each ultrasound picture sitting as a place card at the remaining empty chairs.
Just as we finish the table up, Ted and Phoebe enter the apartment. "Mom?" I hear Phoebe call for me.
"In here." Christian and I wrap our arms around each other, waiting for their reaction.
"What is this? Is today a special occasion we didn't know anything about?" Ted asks while dropping his bag next to the couch.
"It's something your father and I decided to put together for dinner. We hope you like it." Ted and Phoebe walk toward the table and look at each item.
"I see a theme here. Everything is in twos." As soon as she reaches the setting of the picture, Phoebe gasps and covers her mouth. She looks at me as tears stream down her face. She runs to me and engulfs me in a hug.
"Are you pregnant?" She whispers. Over her shoulder, I see Ted and Christian embracing.
"Yes, I am pregnant, with twins. What do you think about that?" We laugh together.
"I can't wait. I'm going to have a little brother and a sister. Do you know when you're due and what you're having?"
"We won't know for a few weeks about the sex. I will be due around July fifth. We need you and Ted to keep this quiet. Do you think you can handle that?" I ask, looking between them.
"Of course! I can't wait to see Grace's expression when she finds out. She has been begging you and Christian for another grandbaby." Phoebe runs to Christian and hugs him tightly.
"Congratulations! This is great news!" Christian nods and looks at me over Phoebe's shoulder. We have been discussing the idea of Christian adopting Phoebe so she can take his last name. The GEH attorneys have been working on getting the paperwork together. We spend the rest of the evening talking about babies and moving to a new house.
Two months later
Today is our appointment to determine the sex of our little ones. The babies have popped out, giving me a defined baby bump. Christian rubs and kisses it all the time, whispering to his unborn children. I secretly hope we have two girls so that he can get a double dose of all things girly girl. But I will be happy with either, as long as they are healthy.
"Are you ready to go, Mrs. Grey?" Christian struts into my office and my hormones go into overdrive. We have been having sex at least three times a day. So far, I haven't heard any complaints from Christian about it. I know once I get bigger, I won't feel like doing much of anything. So, I guess he is taking advantage of it now.
I reach into my desk for my purse and stand to greet him with a kiss. "Yes, Mr. Grey. I'm ready to go. Are we still going shopping afterward?" He takes my hand as we leave my office.
"Yes, we need to buy items for the nursery. Elliott says the remodel will be complete at the end of the month, and we can move in." I kiss his cheek while we wait for the elevator.
"That sounds fabulous. I can't wait to move into the house. Our bedroom view overlooking the water is what I'm looking forward to the most. What about you?" We enter the elevator, and Christian wraps his arms around me.
"I think getting everything ready for our little bundles is what I'm looking forward to the most. When Ted was a baby, I tried to juggle too many things at once and didn't get to cherish the early milestones. Plus I wasn't around during the pregnancy or birth, so I missed out on a lot of fatherhood. I'm making up for it twofold this time." I kiss his lips softly.
"You are a great father, Christian. I can't wait to see you in action two screaming babies." I chuckle as we exit the elevator into the garage. Taylor is waiting for us with the SUV and opens the back door for us.
Dr. Green's office is not as crowded today, and we are taken back right after checking in. "Mrs. Grey, do you need to empty your bladder?" I nod, and the nurse points to the open door attached to the room.
I relieve myself and return to find Dr. Green setting up the machine. "You won't need to change into a gown today. There will be no exam since we are just doing a 3D sonogram. The entire thing will be on a CD for you to keep. Are you ready to see what you are having?"
"Yes! We have been waiting so long for this," I say as Christian helps me up on the table. I move my blouse to just below my breasts, and Dr. Green slides the waistband of my skirt down below the baby bump.
"You look great, Ana. Motherhood agrees with you. Have you had any issues since I saw you last? How are you sleeping?" She applies warm gel to my tummy and presses the sensor to my skin.
"I feel great. I am sleeping and eating well, making sure to drink plenty of water. I'm eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables too." I stop talking when I see the first image on the screen. It's the perfect face of baby number one with its hand tucked around its face. My eyes water as Dr. Green moves around my belly to get the best visual possible.
"Well, there is the first one," Dr. Green says while measuring and recording her features. "She has ten fingers and ten toes, and everything appears as it should." She continues to move along her body, allowing us to see everything little thing we can and taking still shots for us to keep. She pushes the sensor slightly to my left, and baby number two comes on the screen. This time, Dr. Green starts at the feet and works her way up the body. Both babies are head up, and I pray they will turn on their own. Otherwise, I will elect to have a C-section.
"Here we go. Baby number two is also a girl," Dr. Green hovers over her small body parts, making sure to count ten fingers and ten toes. Our sweet baby girl is sucking her thumb, and I cover my mouth to cover a sob. The picture in front of me is so precious. These two tiny lives cuddle together while I protect them until they are ready to take on the world.
"They both are growing normally. Both babies appear to be similar in size at this point. Do you have any questions?" Dr. Green prints off several pictures of the babies and lets us know the CD will be ready in a few minutes.
"You are on track to keep your due date. You could deliver as early as thirty-four weeks and as late as forty-two. Hopefully not the latter. We will keep a close eye on you and the babies as you get further along. You have a regular appointment scheduled in two weeks. If anything comes up before then, just call my office." She hands me a few tissues to wipe the gel from my tummy.
Before I pull my shirt down, Christian places his hand on my tummy and rubs the spots where our children are. I cover his hand with mine, and he smiles. "I have never in my life seen anything like that. It was like we were inside looking at them. I can't wait to hold them and kiss each one of their fingers and toes." I giggle. Those two girls will have their daddy wrapped around their little fingers.
"Me either. Are you ready to go? I'm hungry." Before I can say anything else, my stomach growls loudly.
"Let's go and get you fed. Then we can go shopping." Christian helps me get dressed, and we are out the door.
"Are you going to call your mother? She knows we are finding out the sex today. She will call you continuously until she gets what she wants." I remember when we told everyone our news. She jumped off the couch so fast I thought she was flying. She calls me every day to see how I'm feeling and make sure Christian is taking good care of me.
Christian and I have talked in great length about when I will go out on maternity leave, and if I will return to work after the babies are born. For me, it's going to depend on how I feel around my eighth month. Carrying one was hard enough; I can't imagine two and trying to get around without peeing myself. He reassured me that it doesn't matter what I decide. If I want to stay home permanently, I can.
He will cut his time back once the babies come because he wants to be around for everything. Ros is working on finding someone to help her when that time comes. They have a shortlist of people they've been looking into, and a final decision will begin next month. Time needs to be allowed for the new people to get acclimated about how things run and what the expectations are.
Taylor pulls up to the curb of Canlis, and a few photographers are waiting for us. The press has left us alone for the most part, since we give them a free shot occasionally. Christian has declined all interview requests up until now. GEH's PR team recommended an exclusive magazine interview, which we haven't decided on yet.
"I will call her after we eat. I hope this place is okay." Christian kisses my hand and helps me out of the car. I see a few camera flashes as we walk in the door, but no questions come.
We are escorted to a private table in the back with a great view of Seattle. I look across the table at an even better vision, my gorgeous husband. "This will work great, thank you," I say. The waiter returns shortly to take our order. While we are waiting, Christian takes my hand and plays with my wedding rings.
CPOV
My emotions are running high right now. We are sitting at Canlis, waiting on our dinner, and I feel incredibly blessed. I saw my children's faces while they are safely inside my wife-my beautiful wife sitting across the table from me right now. I touch her wedding rings with my fingers and pull her hand to my lips, kissing her knuckles.
"I got the paperwork from the court today, finalizing Phoebe's adoption." When I showed the paperwork to Phoebe, she cried when she read the petition to adopt her and have my last name legally. She was speechless for most of the day.
"That didn't take very long to come through. Should we go out as a family and celebrate?" Ana asks but in don't answer her. I'm still in a daze from the sonogram.
"Christian?" Ana says my name and squeezes my hand. My eyes find hers, and she has a concerned look on her face. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing is wrong. I'm still feeling the shock of finding out I'm having two girls that will one day have boyfriends." I look back at our joined hands and hear Ana snicker. "It's not funny," I pout.
"Oh come on, it won't be that bad. Phoebe's relationship with Chase has been good so far. Everything will be fine." Her thumb rubs across the top of my hand, and I start to relax. The food arrives shortly after that, and we tuck into our meal.
The next morning, I call a department head meeting for later in the day. I want to see where everything stands if I decide to take an extended leave of absence when Ana has the babies. I told Ros about having twin girls, and she started laughing uncontrollably.
"Oh, you are in for it! I can't wait to see how you handle raising two girls that will be exactly like you," she says before our meeting.
"Maybe they will be like Ana, calm and not hell raisers. I'm not having this discussion with you right now. I want to talk to you about my plans." I reach for a folder and hand it to her.
"What's this?" she asks before opening it.
"It's a list of companies that have reached out to me about a merger. I don't have the time to look at each one individually right now. Do you think someone in M & A can do an in-depth analysis of them and present the findings to us?"
"Have you done any background on them?" Ros asks, then opens the file. "Of course you have, stupid of me to ask. They all appear to be tech companies. Do you want to take on all of that?"
"Some of them have great products on the horizon. There are ten on the list; maybe we should pick three of the best? I hate to turn down the others and have job losses, so if more than three look good, we can re-evaluate." I say, leaning back in my chair.
"I agree. On a different note, how is Ana feeling? Has she suffered any morning sickness?" Ros asks, closing the file.
"Surprisingly, no. Ana has spent a lot of time decorating the new house. It is ready, and we will be moving in soon." Andrea lets me know through the intercom that lunch has arrived for Ana and me.
"I'll see you at the meeting. Enjoy lunch with your wife." Ros leaves as Andrea brings in lunch, setting it up on the conference table in the corner of my office.
"Andrea, I will need to have a short meeting with you before the department head meeting. Can you block off some time, please?"
"Sure, Mr. Grey. Mrs. Grey is on her way up for lunch. Will you need anything else?"
"No, please hold my calls. Thank you." She nods and leaves my office. A few minutes later, my glowing wife waltzes through my door.
"Hello, beautiful." I greet her with a kiss and lead her to the table for our lunch.
"This smells delicious. What do we have today?" She looks over the plates and grabs a piece of fruit.
"Coco Loco chicken salad and a small cup of white bean chicken chili. It's a cold day outside, so I thought a warm soup would be okay. How does that sound?" Ana sits next to me and spoons some chili in her mouth.
"Oh, this is fabulous. Want a bite?" she offers me some, and I gladly take it. I love these intimate moments between us when we can spend time together without being interrupted. I want to take advantage of it now because when the babies come, this type of thing won't happen very often.
"I agree, the chili tastes good. I wonder if the chef will give me the recipe?" Ana takes a bite of her salad, and I eat some more chili.
"What are we discussing in this afternoon's meeting?" Ana asks, but I don't want to talk about work right now.
"We can discuss that later. I want to enjoy lunch with my wife without talking about work." I wink, and she giggles. I love that sound, it's like music to my ears.
"Okay. What would you like to talk about?" she asks after taking a drink of water.
"Is everything done at the new house? I noticed a delivery is on the schedule with security. New furniture coming?" I continue to eat while she tells me about the patio furniture she ordered and a few other things. The house is done, except for our items to be moved in. I bought all new bedroom furniture for each room. Ray handmade the nursery furniture as a gift to his grandbabies.
He was over the moon, excited when he found out we were having twins. Ana and I discussed him living with us, but he wouldn't have it. Ray and Elliott are designing a house and garage that will sit on our property for Ray to live in and work. I wanted Ana to have the peace of mind knowing Ray was close if she needed him or vice versa.
"Hello, earth to Christian. Where'd you go just now?" Ana asks me while cleaning up our lunch trash.
"I was thinking about Ray being closer to you and how excited he is to have more grandchildren." Ana smiles at me and kisses my lips.
"I'm going to brush my teeth in your restroom." She walks off, and I watch her hips move seductively. Thankfully, she is wearing a skirt, and I have enough time to have dessert. I follow her into the restroom and shut the door, turning the lock.
I zone out in the department head meeting thinking back to the tryst Ana, and I had in my office bathroom. I fucked her from behind while she watched us in the mirror. It was raw and naughty, and if I don't start thinking about something else, I will have a problem inside my pants. I hear a throat clear and make eye contact with Ros.
"Anything you want to add, Christian?" She asks with a grin on her face.
"I'm sure you all are aware that Ana and I are having twins. I plan to take a considerable amount of time off, and I depend on you to run your departments with a firm hand. For the past fifteen years, this company has run like a well-oiled machine. I expect it to continue, even though I am not here in person daily. I will be checking in with Ros periodically, and she will address any issues. Any questions?" No one says anything, and I dismiss the meeting.
Everyone but Ana leaves the room, and I open my arms for her as she sits on my lap. "Do I dare to guess where your mind was earlier?" She smiles and runs a finger down my cheek.
"Probably the same place yours was. I can still see the blush on your cheeks. That has to have been the hottest sex we have had in a while. You were right when you said pregnancy hormones were crazy. But I am not complaining." I kiss her lips softly as she relaxes into me.
"I love you," I whisper against her lips.
"And I love you, always." She wraps her arms around me, and we sit quietly for a few moments. "Can we go home, or do you have some work to do?" she asks while running her fingers through my hair.
"I need to look over some contracts and finalize a few things. You can stay here if you want." I rub my hands up and down her back. Do you want to take a nap?" I feel her nod against my neck, and I stand up with her in my arms.
I walk to the couch and lay her down gently. She removes her shoes and turns on her side, facing my desk. I kiss her forehead and cover her with the throw from the back of the couch. "I will only be an hour or so; then we can go home, okay?" She nods and closes her eyes as I kiss her forehead again. I guess I wore her out earlier. I chuckle to myself and sit behind my desk to get some work done.
The next few months pass by without much happening. The babies are still healthy and growing as they should. Ana hasn't gained much weight and is entering her final trimester. We have settled into our new house, and I can watch the boats pass by out of my office window. Phoebe is turning eighteen next week, and the party planning is in full swing. We have the party here, and I asked Gail to plan the majority of it to keep Ana stress free.
I am sitting in my home office as Ana walks in, wearing her bathrobe. She looks like hell. I stand and walk to meet her. "Is something wrong?" I ask her, and she walks into my embrace.
"Nothing is wrong; I didn't sleep well last night. The babies kicked a soccer ball back and forth, and I couldn't get comfortable." I kiss the top of her head and hold her close.
"How about you eat some breakfast then lay down for a nap? I can rub your back until you fall asleep." I can usually talk her into anything if a massage is involved.
"Okay." Wow, she must be tired.
"Is everything on track for Phoebe's party?" I ask, changing the subject.
"Yes, Gail has everything ready. All we need is for the big day to get here. I can't believe she is turning eighteen." I hear her sniffle, and her rollercoaster hormones are in full effect now.
"Don't cry, sweetheart." I grasp her chin and lift her face to me.
"I'm not sad, Christian. Well, I'm happy and sad. I'm sad that she's all grown up and leaving for college soon. I'm happy she has set a goal for her life and is working hard to reach it." Ana smiles and I wipe her tears away with my thumbs.
"I know, baby. I am proud of her, too. Have you had breakfast yet?" She shakes her head, and I kiss her lips help her up. Ana moves my hand and rests it on her bump. I feel a small kick against my hand, and I softly press back. I smile and continue to rub my hands along Ana's belly as we walk to the kitchen. I'm not trying to rush time along, but I am anxious to hold my little girls in my arms.
The weather has cooperated for Phoebe's birthday party. We are ready to have it inside if it rains, but there isn't a cloud in the sky. We have opened the sunroom so guests can walk in and out without having to open doors. Phoebe invited a few friends from school but didn't want to make the party too large. Including family and her friends, there are about twenty people here. There is plenty of food and music is playing through the house speakers. I think it's the music the kids like. I don't think much of it.
"Ready to greet the guests?" I ask Ana as she finishes brushing her hair. The prenatal vitamin she is taking make her hair glossy and thick. I love running my fingers through it.
"Yes, I'm ready. How do I look?" She turns in a full circle showing me her outfit. It's a sleeveless turquoise floral print maxi dress that brings out the color of her eyes. She is gorgeous.
"Baby, you look stunning. That color looks great on you. How are you feeling?" I softly kiss her lips and rub her baby bump.
"I feel great. I'm ready to get this party started." She smiles, places a quick kiss on my lips then floats out of the room like she's riding on a cloud. I follow her, placing my hand on her lower back as we make our way downstairs. I can see these stairs being an issue as she gets closer to the delivery day.
Gail has the room decorated perfectly, and there is enough food spread out to feed an army. I'm sure between Elliott, Ted, and Chase, most of it will be gone by the time the party is over. "Mom! You look fabulous!" Phoebe hugs Ana's neck tightly as I rub her lower back. That has been Ana's biggest issue right now, lower back pain. I'm sure it will get worse in the upcoming months.
"Thank you, Phoebe. When will your friends arrive?" Ana asks as she leans back into my chest. I curl my arm around her waist, resting my hand on her hip as Phoebe talks about her coming friends.
I'm happy she has transitioned nicely to Seattle Prep. Her teachers love her dearly, and her friends are nowhere near the kind she had in DC. When Ana explained how Phoebe got bullied because she wouldn't go shopping with the "rich" girls, I was furious. Each of those girls, including the administration, needs to be held accountable for their actions and lack of intervention. I'm still mulling over a decision to go there in person and call them out. But Ana is in no condition to fly right now, and I would want her with me when it all went down.
"I invited Chase's parents to come; I hope you don't mind," Phoebe mentions it, but I already knew they were coming.
"It's no problem. We have met Chase's parents before and get along great with them. Ana, do you want to sit down outside for a while. The weather is perfect." She nods, and we walk hand in hand to the patio. Mom and dad are seated at the table, so Ana sits next to mom.
"Ana, dear, you look so beautiful in that dress! Pregnancy suits you!" Ana blushes and smiles.
"Thank you, Grace. The babies are starting to run out of space, and I still have three months left. I won't be able to move at all during the last month. How are things at the hospital?" Ana and mom continue to talk, and dad pulls me aside to talk about Ted's schooling.
"Is Ted still considering pre-med?" Dad asks, and I nod my head.
"He seems excited about it. We will see if he changes his mind once he gets to college. How are things at the firm?" I take a drink of water as dad discusses his plans to scale back his hours in preparation for retirement.
"I was hoping Ted would go the law school route so he could take my place in the firm. Instead, I believe he will be taking Grace's place at the hospital. Whatever he decides, I will be proud. No matter what. I made the mistake of not believing in you at first, and I regret it to this day, Christian." I put my hand on dad's shoulder.
"Don't worry about dad. I know you had your reasons for me to stay in school, but with Ted being a baby, I didn't want to leave the responsibility on you and mom. It all worked out in the end." He takes a drink of his beer and nods his head.
"Bro, where's the food?" Elliott yells across the back patio. Kate sits next to Ana, and Ava finds Ted and Phoebe.
"There's plenty in the sunroom, but don't start yet. Grab something to drink and join us." Elliott and I have become closer in the past few months since Kate and Ana have been spending more time together.
Ted and Phoebe's friends have arrived, and the party is in full swing. Elliott has piled his plate high and keeps taking food from Kate's plate. She stabs his hand with a fork each time, but that hasn't deterred him.
I stand up and clink my glass to get everyone's attention. "Everyone, if I could have your attention for a moment, please. Thank you for coming to celebrate Phoebe's eighteenth birthday with us. My life has changed dramatically over the past year. I met the most beautiful woman and her daughter on a college tour last fall, and things haven't been the same since. Phoebe, I am proud of you for handling moving cross country, starting a new school, and dealing with Ted." Everyone laughs except Ted. "Sorry, buddy. You know I love you. Anyway, I'm proud to call you my daughter and I can't wait to see what great things you will do in the future. Happy birthday, sweetheart." Phoebe gets up and hugs my neck tightly.
Ana stands and holds onto Phoebe's hand as she speaks. "I know our life hasn't been the greatest sometimes, but you continued to push through and make the best of it. When we toured Harvard, I had no idea how much the following two months would change my life forever. You saw what I needed and pushed me in the right direction. I love you, baby girl. Happy birthday." Phoebe cries on Ana's shoulder, and I can see a few tears falling down Ana's cheeks.
"Okay, enough of this heavy stuff. Let's have some fun," Ted says as we all sit down to finish eating our food. He is becoming more like Elliott everyday day. Lord, help us all.
When it came time for Phoebe's gifts, she saved the two smallest packages for last. One is from Ana, and the other one is from me. I bought Phoebe the same necklace I bought Ana the day we were married. Ana told me how she admired it, so I bought the same thing for Phoebe. Ana's gift is the keys to Phoebe's new car. We decided to get her the same car as Ted since Phoebe went on and on about how she liked it. The color is metallic blue, but when the sun shines on it, it changes colors. Sometimes it looks black, and other times it looks dark purple.
She opens my gift first and squeals in excitement. "Dad! Thank you!" I stop for a second because she has never called me that. She hugs my neck and whispers in my ear. "I have considered you my dad since we first met. I knew one day you would be. Thank you for taking care of my mother. I love you." I get choked up and have to work hard to fight back the tears.
"I love you, Phoebe," I whisper back. She puts on the necklace and earrings before opening her mother's gift. Ana takes my hand, and we smile at each other.
Phoebe rips open the box and holds up the key fob. "Where is it?" She jumps up and down with excitement. I point toward the garage, and she takes off running. Everyone follows behind her and make it to the garage in time to see her sitting behind the wheel. Her car is almost the same as Ted's, except for the color and the layout of the interior. One good thing about Phoebe's friends is they don't act jealous about anything she has. Most of them are rich and can afford the same things, and they don't flaunt any of it.
The temperature has increased throughout the day, so everyone, except for the adults, decides to swim in our pool. The rest of us sit in the shade and enjoy the rest of the day talking about football. We are all in agreement about the Seahawks needing to have a better offense.
Later that evening, Ana is lying in bed, propped up by a pillow reading a book. She sets the book aside when I lay down beside her. "Great day, huh?" I ask, and she nods her head.
"The best, Mr. Grey. Thank you for everything." She kisses me, then runs her fingers through my hair. I put my hand on her tummy again and feel movement. I pull her pajama top open and watch her tummy move.
"Does that hurt when they do that?" I trace the movement with my fingertips, and it starts over again.
"No, it doesn't hurt. I think one of them is turning in circles, dragging their arm along the way. Sometimes if push on it softly, they will push out. Why don't you try?" Ana gets comfortable and starts to rub her hand across her tummy. Sure enough, an arm or leg follows her movement. I touch it as it moves, and I feel the slightest pressure back against me. I smile and lean down to place a kiss where I felt the movement.
"I feel you in there, little one. I'm not sure which one is doing it, but I love playing with you. Be kind to your mommy and let her get some rest tonight. I love you both, and I can't wait to meet you." I feel movement again and watch it go across Ana's tummy.
"It's wild to watch. Phoebe was the same way, but it didn't happen with her until I was entering the last month of pregnancy. I guess these two are fighting for space." Ana giggles, and I sit up next to her.
"I love you so much," I tell Ana as I run my finger down her soft cheek. She smiles and kisses my lips.
"I love you too, baby. What you said earlier today about how meeting us changed you, I feel the same way. I felt something when we first met, but I didn't know what to do about it. Thankfully, Phoebe and Ted sprang into action and helped us out a little bit." I kiss her lips again, deepening it as she grabs my hair with her hands. We have become creative with sex since the traditional positions are somewhat uncomfortable for Ana now.
I pull back from the kiss and start to unbutton Ana's pajama top. Her breasts have grown at least two cup sizes, and I love it. I lay her on the bed and kiss her, from her jawline to the valley of her breasts.
"Please don't stop, Christian. I need you so badly." She is panting as she watches me take one of her nipples in my mouth, sucking lightly. I nip it with my teeth, and her hips come off the bed. Her body is more sensitive in certain places, and she seems to reach orgasm faster now than before she was pregnant.
She cries out as I move to the other breast, giving it the same attention. I pull her sleep shorts down past her knees and touch her sex with my fingers. She is already dripping wet. I circle her clit with my finger, and she begs for more. I slide a finger inside of her and search for the spot that will send her over the edge.
"Oh.. Oh.. Ah.. Don't stop, please whatever you do, don't stop," Ana pants out as I insert a second finger inside of her. I rub her g spot gently as I circle her clit with my thumb. I watch her body move against my fingers, and I'm close to coming myself. It's an erotic scene that gets me every time.
Ana's wall starts to tighten around my fingers, and I know she is close. "Come for me, Ana; I know you are close. Get yourself off on my fingers, baby." She moves her hips against me as I take a nipple in my mouth, sucking hard.
"God, yes. Just like that," Ana comes all over my fingers and feel my balls start to tighten.
"Ana, I need to fuck you now." I remove my fingers and turn Ana on her side. I slide my underwear down quickly and lay down behind her. I raise her leg, laying it over my hip as I slide my hard cock against her wet sex. She presses her hips against me, and I enter her in one quick motion. She gasps, and I stop completely.
"Are you okay?" I whisper in her ear. She nods and grabs the back of my head with her hand. She turns her face to mine and covers my mouth with hers in a fiery kiss. I start to move slowly, and she pulls her mouth from mine.
"I thought you wanted to fuck me?" She says out of breath.
"I don't want to make you uncomfortable," I say but keep moving back and forth slowly. "Do you want it nice and slow or fast and hard?" I ask, biting her bottom lip.
"I want it all," she says as her hips move against mine. I nod and start at a slow pace, making sure to pull almost entirely out and go back in balls deep. "Yes, baby. Just like that. You feel so good." I kiss her neck as she keeps a tight hold on my hair with her fingers.
I pick up the pace a bit but keep driving in as deep as I can without hurting her. Her cries get louder, and I can feel her walls gripping my cock so tightly that if she wasn't so wet with arousal, I wouldn't be able to move.
"Harder, Christian. I want to feel you tomorrow," she cries loudly. I hold her hip so tight it most likely going to leave a mark. I piston my hips in and out of her hard, and I feel her tighten around me as her orgasm takes over. She chants my name repeatedly, and I keep moving in and out of her chasing my orgasm. After a few hard pumps, I come so hard I almost blackout. I pull her close and rest my head on her shoulder as we both come down from our high.
"Holy shit, that was intense," she says after a few minutes. I raise my head and place soft kisses on her shoulder.
"Yes, it was. It feels like each time is better than the one before. Do you think the same way?" she nods her head and moves my hand to her tummy.
"The babies are dancing again. I think they like the movement when we have sex. Maybe it will tire them out for the night." She chuckles as her breathing starts to slow down. I pull out of her and get off the bed to get a wet cloth from the bathroom.
I come back, and Ana's already asleep. I clean her up and toss the rag into the clothes bin. I wrap myself around her and fall asleep dreaming of little girls dancing in pink tutu's.
Two months later, still Christian POV
I'm startled awake by Ana grabbing at my hand. I lay still for a moment to see what she will do, and I hear her gasping for air. I sit up quickly and turn on the lamp on the bedside table. "Ana? What's wrong? Is it the babies?"
At our appointment this week, Dr. Green said Ana could go at any time in the next few weeks. The babies have already dropped and were preparing for delivery. She felt they had developed enough not to be considered premature, so now we wait. We decided to move into Escala until their birth so we could be closer to the city. The new house is further out, and Ana didn't want to risk something happening and not be closer to the hospital.
"I'm having another contraction," she says in between pants.
"What? How long have you had them? Why didn't you wake me up sooner?" I retake her hand and look at my watch. "Do you know how far apart they are?" She shakes her head, no.
"I think it's over. My back was hurting before I went to bed, but I didn't think anything of it. Then I woke up with painful cramps and realized I was having a contraction. Maybe we should time them and go from there." I lay down behind her and kiss her neck.
"Okay, baby. I'm right here. Is there anything you need me to do?" I place my hand on her lower back and start massaging the tight muscles there.
"That feels good. What time was it when you looked at your watch?" She asks while rubbing her belly.
"It was 3:45 am." She nods and relaxes into me. I feel her body tighten, and her breathing changes slightly. I continue to rub her lower back until the contraction passes. By this time tomorrow night, we will be parents of twin girls.
"What time is it now?" I look over at the clock on her side table, and it reads 3:55.
"It is 3:55. We should head to the hospital. What do you think?" I ask.
"I agree, can you help me up? I need to use the bathroom before we go. The bags are in the living room next to the foyer." I help her sit up on the edge of the bed and wait until she is ready to get up. "Feel this." She places my hand on her bare tummy, and it is tight like a rubber band.
"Is it supposed to be that way?" I ask while helping her up.
"I think so. I read somewhere when delivery is close, or contractions become consistent, the womb tightens in preparation. Can you call Taylor and let him know we will be leaving soon?" I nod my head and help her to the bathroom, then grab my cell phone. He answers on the first ring, and I inform him of what is going on. He tells me he will meet us in the living room shortly.
"Christian, I think my water just broke." I run into the bathroom, and Ana is standing in a puddle of liquid. I grab a towel from the rack and cover it up. Taking her hand, I help her take off her wet clothes. "We better take some towels for me to sit on. I don't want to get this stuff on the interior of the car." I scoff.
"I don't give a shit about the interior of the car. I can either pay to have it cleaned or buy a new one." I use a dry towel and clean her up the best I can. "Do you want to put on a pad?" I feel weird asking that, but I have seen every intimate part of Ana, and it shouldn't bother me to ask.
"I will place a dry cloth inside my panties and sit on a few towels in the car. I think most of it already came out. I feel another contraction coming." She holds onto her tummy and tries to breathe through it. I can tell the pain is getting sharper, and I want to get her to the hospital soon.
Once the contraction is over, I check the clock, and they are still about ten minutes apart. I'm glad Ana and I went to the Lamaze classes offered at the hospital. I learned a lot about breathing techniques and how to help Ana through the pain. "Ready?" I ask her, and she walks with me to the living room.
Thankfully it's warm outside, and she can wear flip flops. I help her to the elevator as Taylor carries our bags. I can see him smiling out of the corner of my eye. "Congratulations, Sir." I nod my head and direct my attention back to Ana.
We make it to the car, and the contractions are still holding around ten minutes. Thankfully, we are going to the hospital in the middle of the night, and Seattle traffic won't be that bad. I call Dr. Green's on call and let them know Ana is on her way in with contractions that are ten minutes apart. The operator advises me Dr. Green is already at the hospital for another delivery, and they will let her know Ana is coming.
"Christian," Ana gasps and squeezes my hand. I kiss the side of her head and rub her shoulder with my free hand while she gets through the latest contraction. They seem to be getting closer together and more intense. I hope we are in time to allow for some pain medication.
We talked about the different options, and Ana felt an epidural would be best with a natural delivery. Dr. Green agreed, and for now, our plan is a natural delivery using an epidural for pain management.
Ana's contraction ends as we pull into the hospital emergency room entrance. Taylor gets out and gets a wheelchair from the security officer. I open the door and help Ana into the chair. "I will let you know once we are in a room, Taylor." He nods his head and leaves to park the SUV.
We check-in at the reception desk, and they send us straight to the labor and delivery floor. We took care of the pre-registration paperwork at Ana's last doctor's appointment. It makes the process smoother when getting her to a room, so Dr. Green said.
"Mr. and Mrs. Grey, this way, please. We have a room ready for you. A nurse will be in shortly to get the fetal monitors hooked up and check Mrs. Grey for dilation." We follow the nurse down the hallway to our room.
About ten minutes later, two nurses come in and get Ana ready. She changes into a hospital gown, and the fetal monitor wraps around her tummy. So far, everything is good with them. Their numbers are stable, and they will be monitored closely for stress.
The nurse checks to see how far Ana has dilated, and she's at a seven. The nurse confirms our option for an epidural and leaves to contact the anesthesiologist to administer the medication. Ana leans back on the bed and closes her eyes.
"Are you okay, baby?" I ask while pushing the hair off her forehead then kissing it.
"Yeah, just nervous. Everything is going to happen so fast, and I want to remember some of it." She chuckles then stops to breathe through another contraction. I will be glad once the medicine gets administered, and Ana can get some rest.
"I will be with you every step of the way. I can't believe our babies will be here soon. Are we still in agreement on the names?" She nods her head and smiles.
"Mrs. Grey?" I turn my head and see a short, balding man wearing scrubs enter the room.
"That's me," Ana says. "Are you here to give me some drugs?" I laugh, and the doctor smiles.
"Yes, ma'am. My name is Dr. Vitale. I will be your anesthesiologist for the duration of the delivery. I have a few papers for you to sign before we get started." He hands over a clipboard and a pen to Ana. He explains everything on the paper, and Ana signs her name at the bottom.
"Alright, I will be removing the fetal monitor for a moment while administering the dose. I need you to sit on the side of the bed and hug a pillow. Mr. Grey, you can stand in front of her if you like." I nod my head and help Ana sit up in the bed.
"Okay, Mrs. Grey. Arch your back and hug the pillow. You will feel a small pinch in your lower back when I stick the needle inside your spine." I watched a Youtube video of how the drug works and decide not to watch it get injected to Ana. I think I will either throw up or pass out if I have to see it done. "Very good. Now, you will feel a tickling sensation as the medicine goes in." Ana closes her eyes and squeezes the pillow.
"Good so far?" I ask her, and she nods slightly. I kiss her head and rub her thighs while the doctor finishes up.
"Alright, let's lay you back down and test everything. You should be close to having another contraction, so I will put the monitor back on and see how it goes." A few minutes later, the lines on the screen start to move, showing a contraction.
"Did you feel anything, Mrs. Grey?" The doctor writes a few things on his paper and rechecks the machine.
"No, I did not. Does that mean the medicine took?" The doctor smiles and nods his head.
"Yes, everything is working as it should. I will send the nurse in shortly. Good luck to you both. This is an exciting time." The doctor leaves the room, and I take Ana's hand in mine.
"Do you think you can rest for a while? I am going to call mom and Ray." Ana nods her head, and I step out of the room to make the phone calls. I pass the nurse pushing a snack cart on her way into our office. I hope Ana grabs some items in case she gets hungry later.
I call mom and dad, then Ray. They will come to the hospital shortly and asked me to keep them posted on Ana's condition. Mom said she would call Elliott and let Ted and Phoebe know as well.
I walk back into the room, and there is a flurry of activity. "What is going on?" I ask the nurse.
"Ana has dilated to nine centimeters. It won't be long now!" She starts preparing the items that will be needed by Dr. Green.
"When will Dr. Green be here?" I ask the nurse.
"She is finishing up a cesarean right now. She will come up when she's done in the OR. The epidural helped Ana relax enough for the babies to drop further. I think she will be ready to push within the hour. I placed some scrubs you will need to change into in the chair." She points over my shoulder, and I look to see a pair of lime green scrubs waiting for me.
Once I change, I check on Ana, and she is trying to rest, but the excitement of seeing our little girls is keeping her awake. "Lime green is not your color, Mr. Grey." Ana giggles and I tap the end of her nose.
"Well, I will make the best of it." I smile and kiss Ana's lips just as Dr. Green comes into the room.
"I guess your little ones couldn't wait any longer?" She asks me.
"It doesn't appear that way. Contractions started around three am, and here we are." I wave my hand, and Dr. Green puts on some gloves.
"Ana, I'm going to recheck you since the nurse said you are progressing quickly." She reaches between Ana's legs briefly and covers her legs back up with the gown. "Do you have names picked out yet?" she asks, and Ana and I both nod our heads.
"Good, because you are ready to push, Ana." Dr. Green addresses the nurses in the room to have the rest of the delivery team respond here pronto. There will be nurses from the NICU in case our babies have breathing issues.
In a matter of minutes, our room is like Grand Central Station. Dr. Green appears dressed in a full gown and gloves up to her elbows. I hope she doesn't plan on needing to go in that deep. There is a nurse on the other side of the bed that will help to hold Ana's legs when she pushes.
"Okay, Ana. When I tell you to, you will need to start pushing until I tell you to stop. During the last appointment, the babies were measuring at a good weight and shouldn't have any problem coming down the birth canal." Ana nods her head and takes my hand. We make eye contact, and I see the worry in her beautiful blue eyes.
"You've got this baby. You are the strongest woman I know. I will be here the entire time." I kiss her lips, then the tip of her nose. Her hair is tied back in a low ponytail to keep it from sticking to her face, and she nods her head in determination.
"Alright, Ana. Push." I count to ten for Ana while the nurse and I pull her legs up. We get to ten, and Ana releases her breath. She takes even breaths in through her nose and out her mouth until Dr. Green tells her to push. This pattern goes on for a little while until Dr. Green says she can see the head of our first little girl.
"Push again Ana, until I tell you to stop." A few seconds later, baby number one's head is out, and Dr. Green tells Ana to stop pushing. Dr. Green cleans her nose and mouth out, then tells Ana to go again. I watch in fascination as our first little girl makes her appearance in the world. A nurse wipes her face and head just as she belts out a loud cry. I have tears streaming down my face as I kiss Ana over and over again.
"Mr. Grey, would you like to cut the cord?" I take the offered scissors, and I cut the cord. "What is her name?" I look to Ana, and she nods her head for me to go first.
"Mallory Grace Grey." I smile proudly as the nurse lays her on Ana's chest. Mallory stops crying the moment she feels Ana's skin against hers. One of the nurses in the room is taking pictures, thankfully. I would have been too overcome with emotion to even think about it right now.
Mallory is handed off to a different nurse so she can be weighed and measured. I wipe Ana's forehead and face with a cool cloth and offer her some ice chips. Before we can do anything else, Dr. Green tells Ana to get ready to push again. I take my place next to my wife and watch her.
"What?" she asks me when she catches me staring. I shake my head.
"Nothing. I am just admiring you and your strength as you bring our two daughters into the world. My heart is overflowing with love for you right now, Ana." I don't bother holding back the tears that are falling from my face. This right here is the most defining moment in my life.
"Okay, push Ana." I pull her leg up and hold her hand as she pushes daughter number two into the world. "The head is out; push easy, Ana." In the next few moments, our second little girl lets the world know she here, crying just as loud as her sister.
"Dad, cut the cord again?" I cut the cord for the second time, and Mackenzie Rayne Grey lays against her mother's chest. Ana kisses her head and looks up at me with watery eyes and a smile. The nurse takes Mackenzie to be weighed and measured as Dr. Green helps Ana deliver the placenta. I enjoy the extra moment to send a text to mom, letting her know her newest grandchildren have arrived.
"We are going to clean Ana up, and then you can let your family in the room when you are ready. The babies are healthy, and their lungs are in great shape. They will not need to go to the NICU." Dr. Green tells me, and I am elated. I was worried their somewhat early arrival would require a small stay in the NICU, but that's not the case.
"Mr. Grey, Mallory Grace was born at 9:08 am, weighing 5 pounds 4 oz, and 19 ¼ inches long. Mackenzie Rayne was born at 9:13 am, weighing 5 pounds even and 18 ½ inches long. Their color is great, and their motor function is excellent. Congratulations again to you both." I nod my head and watch as the nurses wrap each baby in a blanket and hand them over to me.
I walk them to Ana and hand over Mackenzie to her. It has been a long time since I held something this small. I kiss Ana, then Mackenzie on her little forehead. "Everyone is in the waiting area whenever you are ready for visitors. There is no rush from me. I want to enjoy this moment between us for a little longer." I stare down at my precious wonder and vow to love and support her forever.
"I agree. Let's enjoy this moment for a little longer. Do you want to sit next to me on the bed?" I nod my head, and the nurse helps Ana slide over slightly since her epidural hasn't worn off yet.
The nurses finish cleaning the room up and leaves Ana and me alone with our little ones. I have a song running through my head right now, and I pull my phone out of my pocket to find it on my iTunes. Ana and I both love Van Morrison, and as the opening chords of These Are the Days start, Ana smiles at me and kisses my lips. I stand from the bed, swaying to the music and singing along with the words. They ring true because there is no past, only the future; there's only here and now.
I turn to face Ana, admiring her beauty. Even when her hair is a mess, she the most beautiful woman in the world. At this moment, I realize I am the luckiest man alive. I have two healthy newborns, and a wife that loves me no matter what. When we first met, I knew there was something special about her. She took the chance at love and moved across the country to be with me. I will spend the rest of my life taking care of her and my two precious little girls. I close my eyes and tell myself it doesn't get any better than this.
That's a wrap! Thank you for reading this story. I have left some of the storyline open for future outtakes. I have something in mind for Phoebe and Ted, post-college and I intend to write about it. I hope each of you stays safe. I appreciate you reading, leaving reviews, and posting comments for each chapter. I may not have responded to all, but I did read them. During this crazy time, I hope we all can find a way to be positive and lift each other up. Cheers!
Sherry
