"It's just a dream, I'd never leave you"

(Prompt from im-still-trying-to-find-it on tumblr)

They were back at the Iifa tree, making their escape. Garnet was silently pleading that Zidane was joking about going back for Kuja. She didn't want to leave him, especially alone like he was insisting. 'Sure he feels like this is the right thing to do, but it's not the right choice. He should come home. It's better that way. And he'd be close to me' she immediately felt terrible for having such a selfish thought. She knew no matter what she or anyone else said, nothing would change the boy's mind. "P-promise me you'll come back?" He smiled. Not like how he'd smile at everyone else, his eyes softened and he embraced her like it would be the last time he got to hold her. "I promise," he released her and Steiner walked over to guide her to Cid's ship. She watched him until she was no longer able to see him.

Garnet's eyes shot open. She was in her room, in her bed. Not on Cid's airship. Her eyes burned and she couldn't stop the tears from flowing. Sitting up, she covered her mouth in attempts to silence her sobs. She hates that dream, more like the memory that caused it. For two years she lived with the fear that she had lost the one person who truly understood her, the only person who could make her feel the way Zidane did. Her body shook with a particularly loud hiccup. She pulled her knees up to her chest and buried her face in them, hugging herself.

She felt movement from next to her on the bed and the source pulling her close. "What's wrong? Why are you crying?" Hearing her husband's voice calmed her, but at the same time made her cry harder. She shifted herself and curled against him, grading her knees for his chest. "Dagger? Talk to me, what's got you so upset?" He stroked her hair and held her, rocking softly. Garnet sniffed and squeezed him. "You left...we were back at the Iifa tree and you made me go home. And you stayed. And you were gone.." Zidane mentally scolded himself for having done that, even if he felt it was the right choice at the time. "It was just a dream," he kissed her head. "I'll never leave you like that again." She looked up at him, his face barely lit up by the moonlight leaking through the windows. "Do you promise...?" He smiled, the same as he did that day. "I promise. I'm not going anywhere. And should I have to go for any reason and I can't bring you along, I'll be back before you know it." He kissed her softly. Despite her still flowing tears, Garnet smiled back at him. If she could help it, he'd never leave her side for more than a few days.

They stayed holding each other for a while longer before Garnet felt herself being relocated back to her side of the bed and the blankets being pulled over her. "Now lets try and get a few more hours of sleep so you don't get sleepy during your meetings tomorrow" he lay back down next to her and put his arm around her and kissed her forehead. "Goodnight..and don't worry, I'll be here when you wake up and every day after that." He grinned. "You're stuck with me for life now." She laughed softly at his joke. "I wouldn't have it any other way." She snuggled against his chest. "Sleep well." He smiled and closed his eyes. "You too.." he said softly before drifting back to sleep.
