I. Her Mother's Mistake

Madame was watching.

Her beady eyes seemed to wash over them, as she leaned forward on her wooden cane. Her face set into the perfect picture of indifference as they stood in line, waiting for instructions.

(Memories of that cane digging deep deep deep into her back-broken bones, broken promises-)

Chiyo kept her face carefully blank, pale blue eyes focused straight ahead of her. She could feel the woman's gaze bore into the side of her face.

The girl next to her flinched, once the gaze landed on her.

"42," Madame called out, causing the girl to straighten immediately. "Step forward,"

42 trembled momentarily, before lifting her chin up in slight defiance. Madame's eyes seemed to glint, as her gaze turned to Chiyo once more.

"47," She drawled, as Chiyo lifted her head slowly. "Step forward,"

With a carefully placed smile and a swiftness that had the elderly woman nodding her head in approval, Chiyo made her way to the middle of the room. She bowed her head to 42, ignoring the uneasiness present in the girl's muddy brown eyes.

(They're all afraid of you-YOU MONSTER-)

The two girls quickly fell into fighting stances, as Madame tapped her cane against the ground in rapid succession.

Three times, Chiyo noted, her eyes narrowing. She would always do it three times.

"Begin," The woman ordered, with a sound of disinterest. The two girls nodded their heads, and Chiyo felt her muscles tighten.

42 attacked first, her blows slow and unfocused, easy enough for Chiyo to deflect. She watched on, as the girl grew more and more frustrated. Increasingly more sloppy.

Chiyo's eyes wandered over to Madame once more.

Madame met her gaze, a ghost of a smile seeming to appear on her wrinkled face. The woman nodded her head.

You know what you need to do.

Chiyo caught the girl's fist in her palm, smiling as the girl seemed to struggle.

A resounding pop seemed to echo throughout the room.

42 gasped, as she crumpled to the floor, holding her broken appendage. Chiyo stood in place, as tears welled up in the girl's eyes. The same smile still carefully carved onto her features.

(What are you doing-This is wrong-)

Madame tapped her cane against the ground once more, commanding the attention of everyone in the room. She looked over towards Chiyo, with a smile the girl knew all too well.

(The smile she wore when she was about to inflict pain-To cause suffering-)

"I didn't say the fight was over," The woman replied, her tone light. 42 raised her head in shock, as Chiyo just nodded her head.

She sent a kick to the girl's rib cage, the girl's bones cracking under the pressure, and she tried to push down the feeling of satisfaction she felt well up inside of her.

(No matter how sick it sounded, it felt good to win, good to be on top-)

42 coughed out blood.

Chiyo froze at the sight and stopped her assault. The other girls in the room barely concealing a gasp.

Madame tapped her cane against the ground once more.

"I didn't say the fight was over," She repeated, her words clipped. Chiyo fisted her hands into her side before smiling once more.

"With all due respect Madame," Chiyo replied, as she leaned down next to 42, "42 is unable to continue-"

She was careful to not let out a sound when the cane struck her in the face. She continued to smile, ignoring the throbbing in her cheek, ignoring the mark it would undoubtedly leave.

(Ignoring the pain that lodged in her chest-)

"You will do as I say," Madame stated calmly. "And I say that the fight isn't over, 47,"

Chiyo just nodded her head, as she looked down at 42 once more. The girl was a motionless heap, struggling to get up. She spat blood onto the ground.

Chiyo gently sat the girl up, before catching her in a headlock.

42 scratched at her arms, gagging as Chiyo applied pressure. Eventually, the girl grew silent, her arms falling to her side as her pulse seemed to slow. Chiyo looked to Madame, careful to hide the trembling of her fingers.

Madame tapped her cane against the ground.

"Now," She said with a sense of finality "The fight is over,"

Her body was covered in bruises that night.

No one questioned Madame. No one went against her orders without consequences.

Chiyo should've just kept her mouth shut.

She fidgeted in her bed, the quiet of the night putting Chiyo on edge. She began to gently tap on the bedpost.

One of her hands was handcuffed to said bedpost, each of the initiatives undergoing the same treatment. Each morning they would have to pick the lock or suffer being tied to the bed for the rest of the day.

Chiyo never failed.

Failing meant that you'd disappear, be forgotten and left to rot in a ditch. Her mother had always said that was no way to live.

The tapping ceased, as red eyes filled her conscious. She bit down on her lip, her toes digging into her white bed sheets.

(Everything in the room was white. White walls, white floors, white curtains-)

"Are you alright?"

Chiyo placed a smile back onto her face, as she turned her head to the side. Grey eyes seemed to pierce through the dark of the night, the girl's gaze eery and unwavering, as Chiyo just nodded her head.

"Of course 56," Chiyo replied, her voice light and playful. "Don't you think you should be asleep by now?" 56 scoffed, as she shifted in her bed.

"Oh shut up, you hypocrite," 56 bit out, eyes flashing. "You haven't slept in the past three days," Chiyo blinked at that, staring at the girl blankly. 56 grew quiet, pink spots appearing on her cheeks, as she realized the implications of her words

Chiyo just turned her head the other way.

The idea of the girl watching her made her feel slightly annoyed. As if the girl actually thought-

(Blood seeped into the dirt, as Chiyo screamed over their motionless bodies-)

"We're not friends, 56," Chiyo replied bluntly, something twisting in her stomach as the girl winced. "I deeply apologize if I ever gave you that impression,"

"Who-I never said we were friends," The girl hissed. "I was just-you looked-" The girl was at a loss for words.

"Go to Hell," 56 eventually settled on, turning on her side. Her movement slightly inhibited by the handcuffs. Chiyo smiled at that once more, but the motion was pinched, not as fluid.

(Madame would be disappointed-)

"Please take your own advice," Chiyo replied, her tone curt and straight to the point. "You can't afford to have any more mistakes on your record. If anyone needs sleep it's you-"

"They all think you're a monster," Chiyo paused.

56 was rigid, her pink hair acting as a curtain for her face as Chiyo let out a crude laugh. The girl glared at her.

"How fascinating," Chiyo crooned, eyes crinkling. "They're not that far off,"

(She knew the things she had done were irredeemable. Downright disgusting. She knew what she was capable of-What she was-)

56 rose up at that, her arm straining against the cuffs. Grey eyes flashing.

"How can you just-"

"56," Chiyo sang, her signature smile twisting on her lips. "Do any of you really have the right to judge me? Your hands aren't clean either, y'know? If they were, you wouldn't be here,"

56 remained quiet, and Chiyo felt something akin to annoyance thrum underneath her skin.

"Have you suddenly lost the ability to speak 56-"

"I don't think they're right," 56 replied, her gaze lowered to the ground. "They're all being hypocrites. We've all done… horrible things,"

Chiyo just hummed at that, her head hitting the pillow once more. Dark locks spread across the white pillowcase, as 56 tapped her foot innocuously against the ground. She raised her head abruptly, pinning her gaze onto Chiyo once more.

"Even so… you always have that stupid smile on your face," 56 stated, swinging her feet back and forth. "Who are you trying to fool?"

Chiyo's cheek twitched at that, her fingers digging into the mattress. Her sharp nails leaving their mark. The smile didn't fall from her face, however, as she locked eyes with 56.

("You are nothing 47," Madame had whispered over her years prior, as tears streamed down her cheeks. Pain erupting from her back where her wings had used to be-the two identical scars that would forever plague her. "Never forget that,"

She couldn't see, she couldn't move. Writhing helplessly on the hospital bed as she went in and out of conscious

"Never forget,"

Her family, her wings, her name. They had taken it all.

"Nothing,"

Chiyo never forgot-)

"Myself,"

"Chiyo," The girl would later ask her. Much later. Before everything was ruined, and Chiyo could barely stand to live. Before-

"Why'd you kill your batch?"

Before Chiyo ruined her.

Chiyo had just smiled at the question, smiled as she always did, stretching her arms up to the ceiling.

"The same reason you did," She replied, hugging her pillow close to her. Her eyes shone, shockingly clear in the moonlight as she bared her teeth in a jarring, but real-so so real-smile.

(She hadn't wanted to kill them. They were her friends. They were only children. They were like her. But she had to-)

"I wanted to live, 56,"

The girl just nodded her head, before scowling. She swiped at Chiyo's head.

"I told you. My name's-"

Her eyes used to be red.

Red like apples, like freshly picked strawberries, like-

(Just like her mother's were-Stop thinking about her-)

The stone wall shattered, as Chiyo threw her fist into it.

Adachi clapped his hands together.

"Absolutely marvelous, 47," The man replied, as Chiyo rubbed her knuckles. "You're getting stronger by the day! How do you feel?"

"Fine," She replied, a smile still carefully painted on her lips. "Is there anything else you need me to do?"

Adachi cheerily nodded his head, his face crinkling together.

Chiyo wanted to scratch his eyes out.

"If you'll follow me," he said, practically skipping in front of her. "I have an… invention I'd like for you to test out,"

(Another invention? What else could they possibly do to you-)

"Really?" Chiyo questioned, her inflection high. "I can't wait to see it,"

Adachi ruffled her hair.

Chiyo wanted to vomit.

"I think it'll be a good experience for you, 47," Adachi explained, as Chiyo followed behind him. "We know the other initiatives aren't a match for someone of your caliber. Hopefully, he will be,"

Chiyo didn't question him. She nodded her head, her braid bobbing behind her.

She froze upon seeing who he was.

The figure was deformed, his skin a dark blue color. It looked surprisingly out of place, even more so than Chiyo's own grey skin. His bloodshot eyes darting around before locking onto Chiyo's form.

He smashed his fist into the metal wall, creating a huge dent.

"It's a newer creation," Adachi explained, pushing his glasses up his nose as he walked toward it. He petted the monster's head, a twisted sort of smile overtaking his handsome face as the monster leaned into his touch. "Some of my colleagues are working on something of a similar nature,"

Chiyo just nodded her head, pushing down the violent urge to hurl.

"Isn't he beautiful 47?"

It was disgusting.

"He matches you in destructive power," Adachi explained, still petting the monster's head. "If any of the other initiatives had gone up against him they'd be killed in an instant,"

His voice was covered with indifference, as he finally removed his hand from the monster. He sent Chiyo a slight smile, his eyes glinting.

"We've put a lot on you, 47," Adachi stated, his voice deceptively calm. "Your mother failed us, please don't follow in her footsteps,"

Chiyo just nodded her head, her nails digging into her palms.

(It always came back to her mother-)

"Of course not,"

(She would always have to pay for her mother's mistakes)

The monster was surprisingly agile.

Despite its rather bulky frame, it was able to evade whatever blows Chiyo threw at him. The same couldn't be said for Chiyo, however.

She went flying back, as the monster broke through her guard.

As she flew through the air, she glanced at Adachi from the corner of her eye. His lips were pressed into a firm line, as his eyes narrowed. Chiyo just gritted her teeth.

("You are nothing 47-")

She couldn't afford to fail.

Chiyo caught herself mid air, and performed a flip that had Adachi's eyes light up momentarily as she gracefully landed on her feet. She got into a fighting stance once more.

(it was the same style that all the recruits were taught upon entering the initiative. It was beaten into them until there were no flaws-)

The monster lunged at Chiyo, and the much tinier girl swept at its feet.

The monster dodged once more.

Chiyo flipped backwards, as she assessed the monster once again.

He rushed towards her in an instant.

Chyio clenched her fist.

(if he can't see you, he can't get to you-)

Adachi had said it was okay to mess up the room a bit.

Chiyo threw her fist into the floor, causing the ground around them to rise up.

Adachi had always called her his creation, and in a sense the man was right.

He made her into what she was, gave her the ability to do amazing things.

Made her more than human.

Project X had been seen as a nonstarter. Every test subject that experienced the experiment dying a gruesome, slow death.

Chiyo didn't.

Adachi had said it must've been due to her mutation quirk, that the cancerous cells that had spread throughout her body weren't as detrimental as they were to other test subjects.

She had been in a coma for a week after the procedure. She had lost her sight for a month, leaving her eyes to be a pale blue color.

Her wings had to be chopped off.

(The wings her mother and her had shared)

"She'll never be able to have children," She had heard the doctors say. "Her life span will be considerably shorter as well,"

"She survived," Adachi had replied, an insatiable look in his eyes as he stood over Chiyo's writhing form. "That's all that matters,"

The doctors had all nodded their heads at that.

"She'll make up for her mother's actions, she'll serve the initiative well,"

The monster was confused by the sudden turn of events.

He looked around in a daze, dodging the upcoming debris as Chiyo crouched close to the ground.

(Clear your mind-)

Chiyo appeared behind the monster, grabbing the base of its neck and swinging it to the ground.

She looked at Adachi once more.

The man nodded his head, as he smiled down at her. He placed his notepad off to the side.

"You've done well, 47,"

Chiyo didn't respond and looked down at the monster that was struggling beneath her.

"What is he?" She questioned, fighting down the urge to run.

(He wasn't right-This wasn't right-)

"He's still a relatively new invention," Adachi replied, injecting a needle into the monster's neck. It's movement ceased. "He doesn't have a name yet,"

Chiyo just pursed her lips together, as Adachi lead her out of the room. He snapped his fingers, causing two older initiatives to appear in the room at lightning speed. The monster was promptly taken away.

Chiyo flexed her fingers.

"I'm proud of you 47," Adachi stated, his back towards Chiyo as he punched in numbers on a keypad. A metal door opened, as the man led Chiyo out into the hall. "You'll do great things for the initiative,"

Chiyo just smiled at that.

(Everything was for the initiative after all-)

Her ears were ringing.

Madame stood over her, as Chiyo's nails dug into the floor. Her lips were set in a thin line.

"47," Madame said softly, coffee colored skin seeming to glow in the dim lighting of the courtyard. "Why are you doing this to yourself? You know what you have to do, yet you insist on disappointing me,"

Chiyo didn't answer, holding back a cry as the cane struck her back once more.

(Why aren't you fighting back? You could destroy her. Rip her apart limb from limb-)

The cane struck her again.

"Your mother loved to disappoint as well," Madame replied, fiddling with the cane. "She always had a set idea of how things should go, and would never listen to reason,"

Madame grabbed Chiyo by her braid and pulled the smaller girl up to her eye level.

Despite her age, Madame towered over everyone at the initiative, standing at 6'2.

"I even bothered giving birth to her," Madame whispered, something rattling in her voice "And she just… left. Don't you think that's ungrateful, 47? After all I did for her. All I struggled to accomplish for her?"

Chiyo just nodded her head, careful to keep her face blank.

("Stop crying-Emotions make you weak-")

"She didn't even have the courtesy to be born with my quirk," The elderly woman stated, dropping Chiyo to the ground. "Just the quirk of some no name bastard. She was quite happy with it too. Did you know that there were times when she would sneak out at night just to go for a fly? Isn't that a waste of time, 47?"

(That's not my name-)

Chiyo just nodded her head, careful to ignore the throbbing in her scalp.

Madame tapped her cane against the ground three times, and Chiyo felt herself tense.

"You inherited your mother's quirk," Madame said, as a dangerous look entered her eyes. "But.. fortunately, you've got mine too,"

Chiyo's back throbbed, as she met Madame's gaze once more. The elderly woman leaned forward on her cane.

"Show it to me,"

Chiyo bit down on her lip, drawing blood, as something seemed to rip through her back.

(Her mother brushing her hair, holding her close. Red eyes that looked at her with so much worry and-" I love you more than you'll ever know-")

The hands extended.

(While it was true that she had the quirk of her mother. A useful, beautiful mutation quirk that used to make her so happy. There was another quirk that laid dormant in her genes. The doctors had said it wasn't unheard of for some quirks to skip a generation. That her situation, while rare, was an incredibly lucky thing. She never felt lucky, however-)

Madame smiled.

What do you guys think?

I know I've been MIA for a bit, but I hope this chapter satisfied you guys a bit. I have chapter 2 already finished, and I'm halfway done chapter 3. You'll most likely be seeing chapter 2 shortly.

Now onto the actual chapter.

As you can see, there are a lot of things that have changed from the original, including Chiyo's character and power level.

Chiyo's a hell of a lot more OP in this version than the original. I won't get into much more detail until chapter 3, but you can already see some of it this chapter. In the original, I had planned on making her much stronger than she was due to the experimentation she underwent in the lab. But I ended up making her weaker so I wouldn't mess with canon outcomes, and so that she wouldn't be deemed a Mary-Sue. I don't really care about any of that anymore, though.

This story won't follow canon as closely as the original did. We're gonna get some deviation this time around.

If you couldn't tell, she's also not in the lab anymore. That little tidbit will be addressed properly next chapter.

Next chapter will come out eventually(probably later on today to be honest) so look out for that as well.

Any questions you guys have for me?
