"I'm terribly sorry, but you really must complete these forms. It will only take ten minutes of your time."
"Yes but…"
"There can be no negotiation."
The doctor sighed and turned to his companions. "Well Jamie, Victoria, I think we better had."
"Aye, but Doctor…"
"No, I'm afraid there isn't much choice." He turned back to the receptionist. "Three forms please."
"Excellent." The receptionist pulled out three clipboards and handed them to the doctor. "If you are a citizen of the United Kingdom, please head through the black door. If you are a citizen of the EU, please head through the black and white striped door. If you are a citizen of a non EU country or one of the international galactic colonies, please head through the white door."
"Yes, thank you." The Doctor said. "What if your not a citizen of earth or any of the international galactic colonies?"
"The white door, please."
"Thank you." The Doctor handed two of the clipboards to Jamie and Victoria. "I guess that makes you two the black door and me the white door."
"Aye but Doctor…"
But the Doctor had already disappeared through the door.
"Come on Jamie, it shouldn't be too bad," Victoria said. She walked to the black door and opened it. Inside was a room full of tall white tables with off white stools around them. Victoria walked to the nearest one and placed her clipboard down sliding up onto the seat.
Jamie followed reluctantly and picked up the pen that was at the top of his clipboard. There were several sheets of paper, all filled with words and blank spaces to write.
"Erm, Victoria?"
"Yes Jamie?" Victoria sounded distracted had kept writing.
"Could… could ye help me?"
Victoria looked up this time. "They're just simple questions Jamie. What your name is, where you were born, how old you are, what…"
"Aye but…" Jamie reaches up and scratched the back of his head. "Ah cannae read."
Jamie ducked his head in embarrassment as Understanding dawned on Victoria's face.
"Oh," she said. "Alright then. What's your full name?"
"James Robert McCrimmon."
"How old are you?"
"Seventeen"
— 7 Minutes Later —
"Have you ever committed a crime, if yes what? That's a no for me."
"Can ye just put that as no fer me two?"
"Jamie," Victoria scolded, "you ought to answer honestly."
"Well, I donae exactly want tae put treason."
Victoria sighed. "Oh alright, I'll put it as no. That's the last question anyway. All that's left is a signature, which I can't do for you."
"Ach why no?"
"Oh don't worry, I'll show you how." She handed the pen to Jamie and placed her hand on his. "Let me guide your hand."
Jamie bit his lip as she guided his hand across the page. The resulting words were a bit wobbly, but he felt a burst of pride as they finished and she showed him where to put dots and lines.
"It looks very nice," Victoria said. She turned back to her paper and signed her name at the bottom.
"It's no as pretty as yers," Jamie said.
"I've been practicing handwriting since I was eight. If you'd like, I could teach you how to read and write when we get back to that TARDIS."
"Would you?" Jamie looked up hopefully.
"Of course. It'd be lovely to spend some time with you that were not in some form of peril."
"Aye, presuming the Doctor doesnae whisk us off tae some other crazy adventure the second we leave this place."
Victoria laughed as she slid off her stool. "I dearly hope he doesn't."
