I've gotten really into the Dad for All theory recently and I needed a little ship break after Tododeku week so I thought I'd try my hand at this. (I'll be posting all my Tododeku week one-shots in a story on soon, but they're all up and available on ao3 right now, if anyone's curious. My username on there is OWritingTrashO.)
"What do you think he meant by that, Naomasa?" Toshinori suddenly asked. They were a good twenty minutes from Tartarus by now, cruising down the highway as the unease finally starting to seep out of his tense body.
"By what?" The detective answered. "Practically everything All for One said was vague and misleading."
"How much did he lie, while I was talking to him?"
Naomasa frowned. He hadn't been in the room, but instead in an observation deck somewhere else in the facility. Toshinori glanced back at the other man. "Naom-"
"Not once." The hero's eyes widened. "He didn't lie to you."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Toshinori sighed, glancing back out the window. "What could he have meant by that, then?"
"What?"
"He claimed I took something from him."
Naomasa stole a look in his direction, then returned his attention back to the road. "You did put him in jail, finally, and I suppose you technically stole that Yuuei student back. What was his name? Bakago?"
"Bakugou. Bakugou wasn't his, though." Toshinori corrected. "Somehow, I feel like he meant something different. Something more important than that."
"Maybe his family? The staff at Tartarus told me he's always rambling about his little brother, or something." The detective suggested.
"They were long dead before any of us were even alive. I don't know how he could have meant that." Toshinori frowned, then sighed and rolled his eyes. "I don't know why we even try to make sense of him anymore."
Naomasa shrugged. "He's a two hundred year old maniac, maybe he's finally lost it."
"Maybe..."
————————
"Have you had any progress with All for One?" Toshinori glanced up at the question. Midoriya seemed almost too nervous to say the villain's name at all.
After that dream he described, Toshinori can't blame him. During his time with One for All, he never seemed to have visions like that, much less with direct memories from All for One. He can't imagine what it means for the boy.
"No. He's still talking in riddles."
Midoriya poked at his lunch, frowning. "How often do you go there?"
"About once a month. He's rather tired of, well, not seeing me, but having to talk to me. The last few times he's asked about you, actually." The hero said.
Midoriya looked surprised. "What does he ask about me?"
Toshinori shrugged. "How you are, what you're doing with One for All. Usually the first one, though. I don't know why he does, he still has Search. I assume he could probably look you up just fine with that."
"Weird." Midoriya hummed, looking back at his lunch. "What else?"
"He calls me a bad teacher. Probably every time I go, or whenever we're talking about you." Toshinori added, amused.
Midoriya looked offended for him. "But you're a great teacher!" He protested.
Toshinori gave him a wheezing laugh. "Thank you, my boy, but I don't let him get to me much anymore. I'm not sure why I even still go, he doesn't tell me, or anyone else, anything new." He continued. "Why do you ask about him?"
"Oh, no re-" Midoriya's phone buzzed, distracting the teenager. He huffed a little as he read the message.
"What is it, my boy?"
Midoriya blushed, shaking his head. "It's just my mom. She's been...worried."
"About you? I can give her a call if you'd like."
"Oh, no! It's not me this time, actually. It's my dad." Toshinori blinked. He realized quickly, that this was the first time he had ever heard of the man. In all the time he had known the boy, he didn't think he had ever mentioned his father.
Midoriya continued, not even noticing his pause. "He works overseas, in America and, well, he usually calls us about once a month, then extra for my birthday and their anniversary or whatever. Well, we haven't heard from him in a few months and Mom's really worried about him. I keep saying he's probably just busy with work, but she thinks it's more than that."
"Ah. I'm sorry. I'm sure he's probably fine." Toshinori offered. "How long has it been since you heard from him?"
Midoriya set his phone aside, taking another bite of his lunch. He furrowed his eyebrows as he thought. "It was a little before Kamino Ward, I think, so I guess about four months now."
Four months.
Something about that stuck out to Toshinori, but he didn't say it aloud.
————————
"Yagi. I was wondering if I was due another visit from you soon." The villain hummed as Toshinori walked in. He shut the door behind himself, it's clank echoing rather annoyingly in the empty room. He sat at the table across from the glass.
"You look sicker." Toshinori answered bitterly.
"Do I?" All for One mused. He didn't so much as shift in the restraints, although Toshinori imagined an interested head tilt along with the words. "I'm afraid I haven't been given a mirror in quite a while."
"Disappointing." The hero said. He folded his arms. "Care to talk about your successor any? The League has gotten rather quiet since your capture."
"Capture, huh? Funny what you call this." All for One smiled. "No, I'm sure Tomura is just fine. I'd rather talk about your successor, Yagi. How is he?"
"You ask a lot about him. Why?"
"I'm a curious old man."
"He's fine." Toshinori gave up. A neutral, simple answer. He complemented asking about the dream. If he saw All for One's memories, maybe the villain outside was involved with it, too.
"I must ask, Yagi, why him?"
"Excuse me?"
"Why Izuku? Out of all the little boys and girls in the world, why did you pick him?" All for One pressed. Something about it almost felt bitter.
"I..." Toshinori hesitated. He had asked himself the same question so many times already.
Sure, his attitude and determination, alongside his golden heart, were all clear decision makers. The fact that he was quirkless, the same way Toshinori has been all those years ago, well, it helped his process along a little, as well. Maybe it had been the way the boy looked, faced with his idol and still managing to ask him that question.
The real answer, however, wasn't really any of those things. Toshinori had not thought long and hard about Midoriya Izuku and all of his qualities before he had offered him his quirk.
In that moment, it had barely felt like Toshinori's decision at all. Something about Midoriya had attracted his quirk, his attention, when, had he been any other man, he probably wouldn't have spared the boy another look.
To tell the truth, he didn't know at all why he picked him, out of all the other little boys and girls in the world.
"He's a better hero than I will ever be." Toshinori finally said. He looked back at All for One. "The other specifics don't concern you." He lied. He could imagine Naomasa already, watching him lie through that screen. He wondered if the detective would press him for the truth later.
"Hm." All for One didn't look like he enjoyed that answer as much as he thought he would. "I do wonder if you'll ever figure it out, Yagi."
Toshinori paused, glancing at the villain behind the glass. Before he could answer, he spoke again.
"How does he handle my brother's quirk, Yagi?"
"Well."
"Really? Broken bones tell me different."
"That was a long time ago." It had been a while since Midoriya had shattered something. Since the summer camp, with that boy...four months ago.
"If you insist." All for One answered. "Does he hold it the same way you do?"
"Of course, he does." Toshinori argued. It felt like they were going in circles again.
"That's right. Izuku was...Quirkless, wasn't he?" He echoed, as if that was a lie, too.
Toshinori frowned. It was probably Search telling him that. He had certainly never mentioned it to the villain before.
"Why do you care about Midoriya and One for All, at all?"
All for One smiled. "I'm afraid, you'll never really know, Yagi."
Something about him almost felt melancholy.
————————
Toshinori's finger hovered over the name. "Naomasa?"
"Hm?" The detective didn't look away from the road.
"Do you mind if I make a call?"
"Sure, I don't care."
He tapped Shiretoko Tomoko and held the phone up to his ear. It rang a few times, before a woman's voice answered.
"Hello!"
"Hi, Ragdoll. How are you?"
He heard her sigh through the speaker. "Alright, as okay as I can be, I guess. You probably shouldn't call me that anymore. Tomoko is fine."
"Right, sorry." Toshinori frowned. "This is sort of strange, but do you mind if I ask you a question about your quirk?"
"Search?" She echoed. "Sure, I suppose. What do you want to know?"
"Can- Were you able to see someone's quirk with it?"
"No. Not unless I knew it already beforehand. Usually, I just got a name, their general condition, health and stuff, you know? And then their location. It didn't get much more than that. Sometimes a vision of their surroundings, but that was only if I really pushed it, and I rarely had to since I already knew their location, anyway. Why does it matter?" She hummed.
Toshinori paused. "No reason." He answered quickly, ignoring his inner thoughts. "Thank you, Tomoko."
————————
"And he knew I was Quirkless?" Midoriya repeated. Toshinori nodded.
"Big fucking deal, why's that matter?" Bakugou asked, kicking up his shoes on table between them. Midoriya jumped at the noise. "I mean, if this asshole really is all-knowing or some shit, it'd be pretty easy to figure out, huh?"
"But Search doesn't do that, Kacchan." Midroiya argued. "That's what Ragdoll said, so how could he know, otherwise?"
"Probably fucking Googled you, how should I know?" He muttered, glaring back at Midoriya.
His successor opened his mouth to answer, but rapid buzzing cut him off. He grabbed his vibrating phone from the table and paled. "It's my mom, can I-"
Toshinori nodded. "Go, my boy."
Midoriya jumped to his feet, answering the call and crossing the room. He stood in a corner away from them, Toshinori tried to not eavesdrop, but Bakugou didn't seem to care, glaring back at Midoriya while he talked.
"Mom, Mom- Yeah, I know, hey! Mom!" It sounded he was having trouble getting a word in. "Please don't cry, Mom, I'm sure he's okay!" There was a pause and Midoriya glanced back at them. "I guess, I could try. I'm with All Might right now. No, no, it's okay! I can ask...yeah, I will. This Saturday, I know. Okay, I love you, goodbye!"
Midoriya let out a little sigh as he pulled the phone away from his ear, glancing back down at the screen. "What's wrong with Auntie?" Bakugou questioned, staring at him over the back of his chair.
"It's my dad. She's pretty much freaking out. She's tried calling his work and they aren't being very helpful." The teenager sat back in his chair. "She, uh, wanted me to ask you a favor for her, actually."
He looked back at Toshinori nervously. "What?"
"She wanted you to, um, look up my dad?" He answered. Bakugou looked confused, but Midoriya went on. "It's weird, I know, but she's really stressed out. She wanted you to look him up in the quirk database, because maybe that would tell us something? I don't know. I tried explaining it to her that it doesn't really work like that, but she's not exactly listening to me anymore."
"Of course, my boy. I'm not sure if my login will work, since I'm retired now, but of course, I'll try." Midoriya looked thankfully as the hero stood and grabbed his laptop.
"Your dad sounds like a real asshole, Deku, disappearing out of nowhere on Auntie like that." Bakugou hissed.
Midoriya gave him a miserable huff. "I don't know, Kacchan. I think he's fine, but I haven't actually seen him in person in years. I know the money is still coming, so he's gotta still be working, at least."
"The money?" Toshinori asked, returning to the couch. He opened the laptop and turned it on.
"Yeah, my dad sends us money once a month. That's the weird thing. We still get it, but no calls or letters from him." Midoriya explained.
"Asshole." Bakugou muttered.
Toshinori glanced at them, then pulled up the quirk database. It had information on every registered quirk and citizen in Japan, widely available to heroes and sidekicks to help them with their jobs. There was another, more secure, network that included heroes and their personal information.
He tried his login, hoping for Midoriya's sake that it hadn't been changed. He smiled as it allowed him in.
"Come here, tell me his name." Midoriya hopped up from his chair and joined Toshinori on the couch. Bakugou sat on his other side, both of them peering at the screen.
"It's Midoriya Hisashi." He said as Toshinori typed. He pressed enter.
The screen loaded for a second, then it was blank.
No results.
"Maybe you spelled it wrong." Bakugou suggested. Toshinori tried again.
No results.
"Try someone else. Look up me, maybe it's a glitch." Midoriya added, sounding increasingly worried. Toshinori typed his successor's name and was given one result.
Name: Midoriya Izuku
Quirk: Superpower
Quirk Generation: 5
Birthday: July 15
Age: 16
Hair Color: Green
Eye Color: Green
Height: 166 cm
Blood Type: O
Status: Alive
"I don't get it, I show up, why wouldn't he?" Midoriya asked, squinting at the screen like it would give him more answers.
"Superpower? Really, Deku?" Bakugou snorted.
"Not now, Kacchan."
"Your father was born in Japan, right?" Toshinori questioned. "The database only has Japanese citizens."
Midoriya nodded. "He was. I mean, I think he was, I think I would have remembered if Mom told me different."
"Hm. Strange."
"I wouldn't tell Auntie this." Bakugou said, leaning over to look at Midoriya. "She'd freak even more."
"Yeah, I know." Midoriya sighed. "Maybe I'll look into it myself. There's got to be a reason why he won't show up in the database. Maybe he's listed under a different name, although that wouldn't make sense. Why wouldn't he give us his actual name? Or maybe it's me, I'm confused, or I misspelled it or-"
"For fucks sake, Deku, give the mumbling a rest!" Bakugou yelled as something like dread settled in Toshinori.
————————
"Two visits in one month, how lucky." All for One said as he walked in.
"What can you tell me about your dealings in the United States?"
"Who said I would tell you anything at all?" The villain smiled.
Toshinori scowled. He shouldn't be giving up this information so easily, especially since he was supposed to be the one getting information. Those empty pages still lingered in the back of his mind. Plus, four months.
It was too perfect. Toshinori wasn't an idiot.
"There is a man, who was working in the United States four months ago, who has now gone missing. I'd like to know what you did to him." Toshinori said.
"Who is this man?"
"Doesn't matter."
"It certainly does. Over three hundred thousand men go missing in a year. How could I know who you're looking for?" All for One asked.
He was teasing. He was playing with him.
Toshinori scowled. "You know exactly who he is. He's my successor's father."
That caused All for One to pause. "Izuku's father?"
"What did you do to him?"
"Nothing, Yagi."
"Liar." The hero hissed. "He's an innocent man and he's suddenly missing for no reason? I'm sure I've seen plenty of cases over the years like that that have had you at the end."
"How are Izuku and Inko? Are they worried?"
He faltered. "How do you know her name?"
"Are they worried?" All for One repeated, suddenly serious.
"Of course, they are." Toshinori retorted. "It would put them at ease if I could tell them where their father and husband was. Care to help me?"
"No."
"But you know where he is?"
"Tell me this, All Might." All for One interrupted. He leaned forward in his restraints. "If I told you where this man was, who he was, what would you do?"
Toshinori paused, scowling. "Bring him home."
"Not if I told you the truth." All for One answered. "No. You wouldn't."
The hero opened his mouth to argue, but he didn't get a chance.
"You would be mortified. You would be scared, because you don't know your successor that well. You don't know his father very well either." All for One gave him a chilling smile. "I think, if I did tell you the truth, you would leave Izuku fatherless. Maybe you would give him and his mother some half-cooked story about what he was really doing in America. You know what, Yagi, I think you don't even really want to know at all. You want to swoop in and save his father, yes, but really, I think you just want to be a hero for your little successor, one last time."
Toshinori's mouth felt dry. The area where his stomach used to be churned. "What did you do to him?"
The villain smiled wider. "That's the best part, Yagi. I didn't do anything to Midoriya Hisashi."
The hero stood from his table, storming out of the room. As his questions and thoughts ran wild, he distantly heard All for One do something he had never done before.
He wished him goodbye.
————————
There was a whoosh in her bedroom. It startled her enough to make her eyes snap opened, sitting up in an instant. The room was dark, but it certainly didn't feel empty anymore.
"Who's there?" Eri gasped. She hugged her blankets to her chest and no one answered.
The girl reached for her lamp slowly, shadows darting, and a hand touched hers. She flinched, tugging it back toward her body, although, something about it felt familiar.
"It's alright." A man said in the dark. Eri couldn't see his face and she curled further in on herself. "I'm not going to hurt you, but we don't need the light."
It clicked in her mind. The warm hand and the gentle voice. It's not the same, but it feels that way.
"Deku?" She asked.
The man chuckled. "Close. I'm Izuku's father."
"Oh." She said. She had met his mother once, when she had still been in the hospital. Deku's mother had been nice.
"This is a strange request, I'm afraid."
"What?"
The man sighed. "Well, a few years ago, I was in an accident. It messed me up pretty badly. I had to go far away for a little while and now Izuku and his mom are worried about me."
She can see him offer his hand to her in the dark. Eri gives him hers and he leads it to his face. Or, that's what she assumes. All she can feel is marred skin. "You want me to Rewind you."
"Yes, please. I'd like to see my son and wife again."
Eri stole her hand back. "I can't. I'd hurt you."
"It's alright. I'm very old."
Eri frowned. She wanted to help Deku. He helped her so much. "I don't know." She mumbled, torn.
The man took her hand again, gently. "I'll be okay. I promise. Just go at your own pace and I'll stop you when I'm better."
She hesitated, but nodded, sitting up in bed and pressing her hand more firmly to his cheek. Eri took a deep breath and activated her quirk. She couldn't see him change in the dark, but she felt his skin shift under her hand. Eventually, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her away.
"Done?" She asked.
He shifted and the lamp clicked on. "Done." He answered. He gave her a smile. "Thank you."
He looked a lot like Deku, maybe when he got older. His hair is messy and curly, but it's a lighter, almost blue color instead of green. He's tall and broad and he had lots of freckles like Deku, too.
"Now, I have an offer for you, Eri."
She blinked at him. "What?"
"If you still don't like your quirk, I can take it away and give you a new one, if you'd like." He explained. Eri tilted her head. Taking and giving quirks? She had never heard of that.
Eri almost said yes. Most of her life had been dictated by her quirk. It hurt people. It scared her sometimes too.
But, she remembered Deku again. "No. No, thanks." The man raised his eyebrows. "Deku said my quirk was good. It could help a lot of people, when I was older."
"He's right."
"Then I'll keep it."
The man smiled. "That's what I thought you would say." Eri nodded, smiling to herself. She glanced at the man again, then at the glowing lamp. "I supposed I should go. You need your sleep."
"Where are you going now?" She asked as he leaned over and turned off the lamp. Her room was dark again and there was another whoosh.
"Home."

"Breaking News! The top-security prision, Tartarus, has just experienced a breakout. The scene is still developing, as seventeen have already been found dead and twenty-three are injured in critical condition. As far as we know, only one prisoner has escaped. The public is warned to be on the lookout for the villain known as All for One."
A little open ended. I have a few other ideas, so I might continue this, but I think I'll leave this like this for now. Thanks for reading!
