Spots And All

Chapter One

It sure is quiet around here. That's what I've been thinking for the past two years. My name is Pongo and I used to be one Dalmatian among a large group of one-hundred and one of us. I was the dad, special and noticed, but still one of many. When my pet Roger though started to record more of his songs and those played back on the radio, lots of people became interested in adopting the younger Dalmatians.

Of course my pets wanted us to keep all of them but realistically it couldn't happen. Humans find it hard to fend for themselves, to provide for themselves, and now there are only five of us here. My pet wanted to keep at least one puppy and for him, the puppy that he didn't want to part with was my son, Lucky. I think it's because he remembers how he saved Lucky's life, I surely remember. His mate liked Penny. Then there's Patch, who didn't seem to find a family that he liked and wanted to stay here. They let him.

That makes five of us. Five Dalmatians in a larger house and definitely a noisier house. About a year ago, my pet Roger had his own pup. Humans only have one puppy at a time and they dote upon them constantly. Roger has named this pup, Benjamin and I have sworn to protect the small human pup. I don't feel too prepared right now to take on this duty but it's mine. It's not one that I am willing to ignore.

"How are you feeling today?" Perdie asks and I sneeze. We both know that I have a cold and am shivering, I don't feel good and I think that there are a lot of dogs with colds out there. My pet seems concerned by this and I get my food separately and I think this will be the third time I will miss out on my evening walk. I sneeze again and Perdita makes her way over to me, she nuzzled the side of my head.

"Oh, Pongo," she sighs, "You will get better. I've been sick before too," she tried to remind me but I don't need reminding. When Perdie had a cold and couldn't come on our walk, I worried for her so much I had trouble not thinking of being there beside her.

I see the dog walker, a young man named Percy, getting the others and I whine as I lay down in my bed. I want to go on a walk too but Roger would worry too much. It's better for everyone if I just stay here. I yawn and close my eyes. I'll most likely wake up when they get back and then at least I won't be lonely anymore.

…..

I usually don't have such a heavy sleep but I suppose when you are sick, you're not really sure of what is going on around you. I yawn but then smell something. There's a smell that isn't supposed to be here. A human smell but none of the humans I know. I hear a crash in the kitchen. Has Roger attempted something elaborate for dinner again?

I hear Benjamin wailing and get into action. Something is wrong. I walk into the kitchen, letting my nose press open the door and I see some strange man robbing us and in his pocket is one of those scary things that one would call a gun. It's a small item but something incredibly powerful and very capable of ending a life.

I hear Roger on the other side of the door and he's holding a tennis racket. This puts him at a serious disadvantage. I already know that the bullet of a gun is more powerful than the back hand of a racket. "Get out of my house, I'm warning you," Roger tells them and I want to make sure that not only Roger is safe but Benjamin is too. I have to try to come up with some type of a plan. I'm still a young dog at heart, I can do this.

"Are you sure about that," the burglar says as he points the gun at my pet. I see the fear in Roger's eyes. I have to somehow get that gun away so that it isn't used on either my pet or his offspring. "You'll do what I say."

I rush forward, the gun has to be taken away. Fists can't do the type of damage that a gun can easily do. I hear the man start to shoot Roger but I jump in front of my pet and feel the sharp sting in my own body. I fall limply onto the ground but my back leg touches the burglar and he drops the gun. I see Roger pick it up but my body feels so heavy, I want to go to sleep so badly. I'm sorry, Roger. My body doesn't seem to be obeying me right now. Now that you have the gun, I hope things work out okay. I'll see you when I wake up.
