That night, Ruby stared at the shattered moon and feebly cursed at it. She was in trouble, and her judgement day was in a matter of hours.
Ruby, where are you? From Cinder. Ruby sighed and opened her Scroll.
I can't come. I'm under punishment by Yang, and my dad is coming tomorrow to yell at me. She typed back after a moment of deliberation.
Alright. Don't allow this to impact your training. Cinder texted. Ruby sighed and let her chin drop to the ground.
I won't. Ruby replied, and resisted the powerful urge to snap the device in two.
Glancing up at the sky, Ruby longed to be able to do something Cinder had suggested...
Ruby's eyes widened at Cinder's idea.
"You think its a good idea?" She asked.
"You have shown your control over these Grimm to be unrivaled. Even your second in command can wield the bull hook and make them obey her will." Cinder said.
Ruby allowed a small smile, "Berra really is something. She works closely with my betas and has shown she has a gift for her line of work." She agreed.
"So if they are broken by your scythe, how are they taught to fear the bull hook?" Cinder asked as Ruby tugged her tail around herself to comb through it with her claws.
"Its kind of a herd mentality. My betas are taught to teach the others to fear the handlers and their bull hooks. The handlers are told to make examples of Grimm who fall out of line." Ruby explained. Cinder nodded, and Ruby hesitated for a moment "I'll try it. To be honest that was one of the first things I thought of with her. But she's still headstrong, and if I make one wrong move Baryonyx won't hesitate to chomp me up like she's done to almost every handler who has been charged with her." Ruby sighed, thinking of the nearly a dozen casualties Baryonyx had caused in the last months.
Cinder nodded "I have a feeling this will work. Not to mention all of your work on her was to lead to this anyway." She said.
Ruby took a deep breath. "Yeah. I'll tell Berra to prep the gear." She said and descended down to the elevator's locker room, Cinder following.
":Baryonyx. Talon of the sky.:" Ruby greeted after Cinder and she walked into the arena.
":Alpha. Why are you here?:" Baryonyx clicked her beak. ":And who is this? Another weakling who tries to order me around?:" She swung her face towards Cinder.
":No. I am Cinder, Baryonyx. I am the one your alpha serves.:" Cinder said in Grimmspeak. Baryonyx tilted her head to the side.
":You possess strength, more so than Alpha.:" The Nevermore stated.
Before either girl could say anything else, the speakers crackled to life. "Commander Rose, I have your gear." Ruby smiled.
"Good. Bring it out." She said. Berra alongside three other personnel jogged out carrying gear. A saddle and a large bridle device. ":Stand still.:" She forced authority in her tone. Berra passed by Ruby and handed her a bull hook that had been painted in the black and red colors of Crescent Rose. "Thank you, Berra."
Ruby watched as her workers put the equipment on Baryonyx. When two approached to bridle her, Baryonyx nearly snapped from her Authority induced reverie, if it wasn't for Cinder snarling a command for her to be still — followed by a pulse of Authority so strong that Ruby locked in place instinctively.
Finally, Ruby commanded Baryonyx to lower herself so she could climb atop her. She swallowed and gathered up the reins.
"Berra. Take us up." Ruby's breathing quickened as she tried to dampen her fear.
":Scared, Alpha?:" Baryonyx jeered from below her.
":No.:" Ruby stated as the ceiling opened up above them and the ceiling above it had begun to open as they ascended.
Ruby tightened her grip on her bull hook, which she had jokingly named "Thorn" several years ago. Now they were on the roof of the facility. Tapping the side of Thorn on the joint of Baryonyx's left wing, she gave the command. ":Up.:" Baryonyx shuddered for a second under her Authority, and took flight. Ruby's heart was in her throat as she lowered herself against the Nevermore's back.
"This is insane, this is insane." She whispered to herself as Baryonyx spiraled slowly higher into the sky.
Finally Ruby commanded Baryonyx to head west, and the Nevermore obeyed. They flew for what seemed like hours but could only have been around four minutes before Ruby calmed herself and took control again. She sped up the Grimm, and felt her fear melt, replaced with excitement. Baryonyx seemed to scoff under her. ":I'll show you speed.:" Ruby was about to command the Nevermore not to follow through on whatever she was thinking when the wind picked up and Ruby's hood flipped backwards. Elation filled her, the shattered moon's light was the duo's guide as Baryonyx carried her.
Eventually, Ruby had to command Baryonyx to turn back. She sensed the Grimm's hesitation, and it matched her own. This was the first time the Nevermore had flown since her capture, and Ruby wanted to experience the feeling of flight again. As they descended slowly, Ruby had a idea that perhaps flying with Baryonyx would help the Grimm bond with her more.
The sound of Weiss's alarm clock broke Ruby out of the memory, and Ruby wanted to run. A beacon of anger was approaching Ruby, and the anger was directed at her.
