Hey, we actually reached a 100 reviews, that's neat! It may not seem like a big deal to people but it definitely is for me. This is the first of my stories where this happens, thanks a lot!
Defender31415: Thanks. I figured that stuff would fit well enough, Makoto and Haru's situations are similar enough so I can't help but compare them. I didn't know robot was the Czech word for slave, that's an interesting coincidence. It's just that this total obedience the robots displayed reminded me of Kamoshida's slaves.
Funny you should mention that, I actually intend to bring up the matter around Ohya's investigation in Shido's arc too.
Vent-Zxa: To be honest, I really didn't look at the Song of Harmony and the Call of Chaos in those terms before but yeah, after thinking it over, I'd say what you mentioned sounds about right.
I didn't know you were planning to make a Persona 5 story, that would've been nice to see. You had a similar idea for a power with Joker? The idea for the Song of Harmony just occured to me after learning all I could about Akechi, if he's supposed to be Joker's counterpart, I thought there could be something more to show for that.
Thanks a lot, that review of yours really made my day. I'm enjoying working on this story a whole bunch so it's great to hear that people out there are enjoying it too. By the way, I don't feel weird at all, I've had that sort of feeling with other stories before so I know exactly where you're coming from. I've decided a long time ago that if I start a story, I'll do my best to see it through to the end. Even if there may be some rough spots and trouble here and there, I want to finish this story. At first I just started this story out on a whim because I was bored and I liked P5's story, now it's a lot of fun.
Given all what went down in the Palace in the last two days, the Phantom Thieves decided to take a break from the Metaverse today and head back tomorrow. After school, Namine, Morgana, Makoto and Ryuji were heading to the Protein Lovers' gym to meet up with their friends. It was near one of the second year classes that they came across a distraught student who was being comforted by three of her friends.
''He's still doing this? Can't you get some help?'' They heard one of the girls ask.
''Yeah, this is messed up!'' Another added.
''He's supposed to be looking out for you!'' The third girl added.
''...Y-yeah...'' The fourth girl spoke up. ''...I don't know what to do. I know he's stressed out...''
''Don't make excuses!'' The first girl said sternly. ''He has no right to treat you like this! You're the only family he has left now!''
''Excuse me?'' The quartet started at Makoto's voice and turned to face her. ''What happened here?''
''It's...um, it's nothing...'' The upset student lied, looking away.
''Hey, come on...'' One of her friends started but the girl merely shook her head.
The third girl had an idea ''Hey, can't you ask the Phantom Thieves for help?'' Everyone looked at her in surprise and curiousity. ''I mean they helped the students of that awful fake artist, didn't they? Why wouldn't they do something for you?''
''Wait, my cousin isn't anything like that!'' The girl stated. ''He isn't...he isn't a bad person...I don't want it to come to that.''
Makoto couldn't help but grimace in sympathy at this. ''...I realize that I'm interfering and I'm sorry but if things really require that sort of measure then it must be bad. If there's anything I can do to help...''
''Hold on, why do you care now? President Nijima, you've hardly done much to help us students before.'' The first girl pointed out.
Ryuji frowned while Makoto held back a wince ''Hey, you don't have to say it like that-haven't you been looking around school? She's trying to make a difference!''
The second girl couldn't help but agree ''You know, I think he's right. Someone in class said that she actually is reaching out to the student body and trying to help.'' She looked at the fourth girl. ''Come on, what's the harm in telling her? It might actually do some good.''
''B-but...'' The fourth girl looked down.
Makoto steeled herself and spoke up ''Well, let's see if I have this right-you mentioned something about a cousin and you're having some problems getting along? I'm sorry, we overhead you since we were nearby.'' The girl bit her lip but nodded. ''To be more accurate though, it sounds like he's mistreating you. One of you mentioned something about him being responsible for you now, I take it this is a recent development and he has trouble dealing with it. How am I doing so far?''
''That's...all correct.'' The girl managed, looking surprised. Had she picked up all that already?
''I see...well, believe it or not, I know just how you feel.'' Makoto admitted to general surprise. ''Someone I'm close to faces similar pressure-I've tried to do all I can to help her. Now I realize that it may not the best solution around all this. I know she still cares but our situation's...difficult.''
Namine spared the brunette a curious look but decided to focus on the matter at hand ''...Well, you don't have to force yourself to talk if it makes you feel this bad. It looks like you've had enough of a hard time as it were. I've learned that even just talking about something that troubles you can really help. It's not healthy to keep it all in so just keep in mind that you do have people willing to help you. Your friends here sure seem to have your back for one thing.'' she added with a nod to the three girls who were watching her in surprise. ''Makoto had her own circumstances that got in the way of her responsibilities as student council president but like Ryuji said, she's trying to make up for that. You can definitely count on her if you need advice, she won't steer you wrong. I'd try to help too, for what it's worth.''
Makoto smiled at the girl before addressing the students ''Just think about it, I won't ask for anymore. We can always work something out.''
She began to head off and was quickly followed by her friends when the girl suddenly called out and thanked her. Makoto felt a measure of relief surging within her, watching with a smile as the girl thanked Namine too. The burgundy haired girl smiled and waved, wishing her good luck.
Makoto felt bad that there was nothing she could do to help the girl but at least she heard them out.
''That was good of you.'' Morgana commented.
''Do you think so? It proves that I still have quite a ways ahead of me to make everyone understand that I'm not the same as I used to be.'' Makoto stated.
''Aw, come on, don't be like that. You heard that girl, right? Some of 'em do see it..'' Ryuji pointed out.
''Just give it more time.'' Morgana added.
''You are making a difference, Makoto. They'll see the truth for themselves.'' Namine chipped in.
She spared the three a grateful look ''I hope you're right...''
They were approaching the school gate, which was when Makoto spotted Mishima. The boy seemed distracted as he was clearly looking for something, his expression turning into of relief when he saw them. However, the four Phantom Thieves immediately knew something was wrong for the boy had a couple of bruises on his face as well as a couple of bandages here and there.
''Whoa, what happened, man?'' Ryuji demanded while Namine looked on in concern.
Makoto frowned ''Who did this to you?''
Mishima seemed to hesitate for a moment ''...I really know how Namine-san felt after her arrest now.''
The girl in question blinked ''What do you mean?''
''See, I was just leaving the computer room when...'' Mishima proceeded to explain how he encountered a couple of first years who were being bullied by a third year student. He had not only taken money from them but also punched and mocked them afterwards.
Having grown more bold and confident since then, Mishima stood up for the boys. He had tried to encourage them to fight back and do something against the bully only to be dismayed when the two recoiled and quickly ran off at the first opportunity. Sadly, he only wound up with a few punches and plenty of mockery for his trouble.
''...Just look at this...I guess I was just kidding myself to think I would make any difference...'' The boy finished morosely.
''Now why would you think that?''
Mishima looked at Namine in surprise but the girl gave him a reassuring smile ''Mishima-kun, look at it this way-you stood up for others to help. Ignoring the actual result for a second, how do you feel about that?''
The boy blinked, thinking that over. A few months ago, he never thought he would've taken such actions. He would've just kept his head down and walked away. Now he knew he couldn't bring himself to do that, with that he knew the answer. ''I...feel good. I mean I'm still mad at the way it turned out but other than that, I'm glad I could do something. It's weird but it still feels nice...''
''That's just what I'm getting at. It proves you've gotten stronger, remember what things were like when we first met? Well, look at you now.'' Namine added.
''Oh...you're right...'' Mishima began to smile as the point sank in. So perhaps he really had been changing...changing for the better then...
''Totally, man. I mean come on, you still stopped that prick. Even if those two ran off, you did good Mishima.'' Ryuji assured.
Makoto nodded with a smile ''You have nothing to be ashamed of. People like that bully are just petty fools, you're the better person, Mishima-kun.''
The other boy felt happier with those words, he admired the Phantom Thieves ever since they stopped Kamoshida. Okay, maybe it was for the wrong reasons at first but the more he got to know them, the more he came to understand their motives. It was learning what he did in the process that made them more admirable in his eyes. ''Thanks a bunch!''
Makoto had a thought, she may not have been able to do much before but this was something she could handle ''Can you describe those boys for me?''
Futaba looked around the gym, reluctance clear in her tone ''...Guys, do I have to?''
''Come on, Futaba-chan, it'll be fun.'' Haru stated with a smile as she began to stretch.
The hacker's expression made it clear that she disagreed ''I'm going to suck at this...''
''I believe you promised to at least give this a try.'' Yusuke reminded.
''Exactly, it'll be good for you. Didn't you say you were getting bored of taking walks?'' Ann pointed out.
This made the girl huff in annoyance. That didn't mean she wanted to do this!
The model lead her to a treadmill ''Just give this a shot, Futaba. It'll be good for you. You can take a break when you want-no one would mind.''
''Fine...'' She watched as Ann set the machine up for her while the others continued with their preparations. Soon they were all engaged with activities around the gym. Makoto was doing some aikido exercises and was eventually joined by Haru, who wanted to try this out. Ryuji was lifting weights on the bench press and Yusuke was on the elliptical trainer. Namine had taken to going on one of the stationary bicycles while Ann was using another treadmill.
Since her stamina was low, Futaba needed a break after a short while. She understood that her friends were trying to remedy this very problem but that didn't mean she liked this method. She did note that when they seemed to get tired of their current activity, they switched to something else while occasionally conversing with each other.
Eventually, the talk settled on recent events...
''So any news on Sugimura?'' Ann asked Haru.
''Well...the situation is resolved in a way.'' was the response.
The model looked confused ''In a way?''
''I only heard about it this morning but it seems he called my father earlier to annull the engagement. He wanted to apologize to me too but Father was so angry that he wouldn't hear it.'' The heiress admitted. ''Father is convinced that this is way to break out of the deal he made with the family.''
Yusuke raised an eye ''Deal?''
''The reason Father wanted us to get married was that he made an agreement with Sugimura's family.'' Haru explained. ''He would be able benefit from their power an raise his position in society to further some plans of his. That's all I know it though.''
''So what happens now? Does he have some sort of plan?'' Namine wanted to know.
''I'm not sure-I tried to find out earlier but Father didn't say much. He wouldn't give up because of this though. Whatever this plan is, he's absolutely adamant to see it happen.'' Haru stated. ''He made it clear to me earlier. I wouldn't be too surprised if he pushes for the marriage idea again. I imagine it all comes down to how he benefits the most.''
No one missed the sad undertone in her voice which only just made them all the more angry with her father. It was hard not to, Okumura was treating Haru like some sort of object. Was that really what he thought of her?
''What a bastard...'' Ann muttered. It was easy to see how this was upsetting Haru.
''Well, we already know that the sure fire way to stop him is to change his heart. So we'll just have to focus on that.'' Yusuke stated, earning nods from the rest.
Given aforementioned talk, the group's mood had taken an understandable turn for the worse. As they headed out of the gym, Futaba looked back at the rest. ''Guys, the mood's turning into a downer. Let's do something to change that!''
Makoto looked at her curiously ''Sure, what did you have in mind?''
''Hmm...'' The girl thought for a bit before her face lit up. ''...ooh, how about we have Namine sing again?''
Aforementioned girl stopped in surprise at being dragged into this. Morgana grinned ''Hey, that's a good idea! Haru doesn't know much about this, it's a good a chance as any to show her.''
The heiress was left curious ''I know Nami-chan loves music and that she used to sing...does this mean she sang for you all before?''
''Yup, we talked her into it. She's brilliant.'' The cat returned.
Ann looked at Namine ''Come on, this'll be good. We're all for the idea. You were thinking of getting used to singing again.''
''Yeah...'' The girl agreed. ''...no time like the present, right? Let's do it.''
The blonde grinned ''That's the spirit!''
The group went to the karaoke per Ann's suggestion. They managed to find seats with little preamble and waited as Namine got ready. The rest of the group took time to give Haru the full scope of the situation when it came to their leader and music.
''Ahh, so that's how it is...'' She nodded, smiling as she added. ''...well, I can't wait.''
''You're in for a real show.'' Ryuji assured.
Namine inhaled and exhaled, mentally preparing herself. There was still the old hesitation she was used when it came to singing but she figured it was something she had to work. Still, she felt more ready to do this than she had in a long time.
After thinking it over, she decided on a song and got started...
(Play Hello to Dream by Yuka Iguchi)
The song began with a soft tune that rose in strength and Namine sang accordingly. Her friends listened happily, all of them agreeing that was doing great. Her soft and melodious voice resounded around the room. At first she seemed a bit unsure of herself but the further she went, the clearer it became that she was having fun. It made her performance all the more better.
It quickly became clear that they weren't the only ones who thought so for people who were passing by were also drawn over by the music. Soon, appreciative murmurs arose as they all gladly stopped to listen to Namine's song, all clearly enjoying themselves.
Namine herself was surprised by this turnout. Her friends were one thing, she hadn't thought others would be interested in her performance. She made sure to focus on her performance, wanting to see it through to the end.
When she reached said end, it was to receive a standing ovation from the crowd along with quite a few cheers.
''Way to go!''
''Yeah, that was awesome!''
Ryuji grinned as others voiced their agreements to these statements ''Now that's what I'm talkin' about!''
Namine couldn't help but smile, all those people liked her singing...that felt really nice. ''Thank you!''
''Nami-chan, you were amazing!'' Haru praised once the girl rejoined them.
''Excellent.'' Makoto smiled.
''Yeah, way to go!'' Morgana agreed.
''That was great!'' Futaba added.
''Ahaha, thanks...'' She returned bashfully. All the praise was really getting embarrassing ''...this makes me really happy...I didn't think so many people would like my singing.''
''I think I speak for all of us when I say that there is nothing NOT to like.'' Yusuke stated, making her beam at this.
''You got that right.'' Ann agreed happily.
''Totally,'' Ryuji chimed in.
Namine smiled at her friends, grateful to have their support. It was thanks in a big part to them that she could do this in the first place. The whole thing felt really good...
''Hey, look!'' Morgana said suddenly, startling her. She noticed the cat pointing a paw at their far left in the direction of a man and a woman coming over. It was the woman who caught most of the group's attention at once. She was none other than Matusoka Hijiri.
''Whoa, she's here?'' Ryuji breathed while Futaba quietly told Haru who it was, leaving her similarly surprised.
''She seems so much better off now...'' Makoto trailed off, relief clear in her tone.
It was true. Hijiri displayed no sign of her shadow's miserable behavior and if anything she was happy and lively, chatting with the man as they went along. They seemed to be getting along very well. If anything, it seemed like an almost completely different person from her shadow now.
Hijiri perked up when they met up, her attention on Namine as she spoke ''Hi, we just wanted to say that you were great back there. You really blew everyone away.''
''Thank you...'' The burgundy haired girl couldn't help the smile on her face, it was nice to see Hijiri so cheerful.
''Yeah, that was just what I needed after today. I might enjoy working here but you wouldn't believe how many brats just come around to just mess around with everything.'' The man stated with annoyance clear in his tone.
''Oh lighten up, you made sure the trouble's stopping didn't you? Your crazy ideas worked already.'' Hijiri remarked.
''You weren't complaining when they did with you.'' He pointed out.
She laughed ''Fair enough.''
''Crazy ideas?'' Ann quickly shook her head. ''Oh, sorry it's none of our buisness...''
''It's all right, it's natural to be curious.'' Hijiri returned. ''Tai means that he asked the Phantom Thieves to help me and they really did...it's thanks to them that I made such a breakthrough during the worst time of my life.''
''That's nice to hear.'' Haru remarked.
''That's why neither of us care what people say, the Phantom Thieves are heroes and we'll stand by them.'' Tai added.
Ann began to smile ''I hear you...we feel the same way.''
The following day...
The group agreed to meet up and head back to the Palace. Since most of the group had a few activities and duties they wanted to finish, they agreed to meet up in a couple of hours. Thus, Namine joined Yusuke in a the museum to find him already browsing a few painting and sculptures.
''Hey! How's the search for inspiration going?'' She inquired as she walked up to him.
He started and looked back, giving her a small smile ''Ah, hello. Not too well, I'm afraid. But I won't let that stop me, I'm determined to win this competition. I will ensure that Kawanabe sees that he is wrong about my art.''
''What? But that's...'' The boy was clearly distracted as he was walking away already, his eyes locked on another painting. Was that really all he cared about? This wasn't right at all. It just wasn't like him.
Seeing how focused he was, Namine decided to leave him be for now but they would definitely talk about this soon...
''Ah, I thought that was the two of you.''
Blinking at the familiar voice, Namine turned to see ''Kawanabe-san.''
The man smiled and greeted her cordially, a gesture she returned in kind. His eyes traveled to Yusuke ''So would I be correct in assuming that our last talk lit a fire under him, so to speak?''
''Something like that...'' She returned, her tone making him raise an eye. ''...ah, just thinking out loud. Sorry...''
''Don't be.'' He assured. ''Does something about his stance on this trouble you?''
''A little...'' Namine admitted. She figured that someone who knew much about art and had experience with artists could help her sort her feelings out. ''...I'm not sure he's doing this for the right reasons. He's invested in that contest but still...maybe I'm overthinking this but Yusuke actually just did art because he loved it. Now he's forcing himself so much because he's under pressure. I think the feelings...your drive and motivation all affect what you do. But this...I mean I don't know much about art and most of what I'm picking up now is from Yusuke so I wonder if I'm overthinking this...''
''Those seem like valid concerns to me.'' Kawanabe stated. ''You're worried about him, Hyakuya-san. It's understandable, you may be helping him find his path after what Madarame did but he has to make the decisions in the end.''
''That's true...'' The girl's brow furrowed. ''...it's just...I've loved music ever since I was little and I've learned all I can about it. A lot happened and because of that I...forgot how that felt but Yusuke really helped me remember that feeling. I'm hoping I can do something to help him too.''
''Ah, so you speak from experience.'' The man realized. ''I happened to see you two a couple of other times after we first met while you helped him looked for inspiration. I spoke to him as well. He certainly trusts your word a great deal and I can see why. You're a kind person. Just keep doing what you're doing now, I believe your support would do Kitagawa-kun a lot of good. This is just an old man's opinion though.'' He added with a chuckle.
Namine began to smile, appreciating his words ''Thanks...''
Unfortunately, Yusuke hadn't had much luck finding anything like he wanted and they left after a while.
''Hmm, this is indeed harder than I anticipated...'' Yusuke mused.
''Well, I'm up for trying again if you are.'' Namine stated, earning a grateful smile from the artist as he thanked her. ''You might want to consider relaxing and not forcing yourself so much though.''
''How do you mean?'' He asked, surprised.
''It's like we talked about before, I can understand that you want approval for your work and that's just fine. That shouldn't be all there is to it. Wasn't your love for art what motivated you to begin with? You shouldn't forget about that all together.''
Yusuke wanted to object that he hadn't but he realized that wasn't true ''I suppose I let Kawanabe's words affect me too much...you may have a point, it's no wonder I couldn't find inspiration with such clouded eyes. I'll try to keep that in mind. But the Palace is our main concern for now. We still have time to meet up though, is there anywhere you wish to go in particular? Since you went through all the troubl with me today, I'd be happy to accompany you.''
Namine was about respond but then she felt her phone buzz and opened it to find two messages. One was from Akechi, who seemed to want to talk to her about something later. The second was from Makoto, the girl wished to meet her in Chinatown. She hadn't explained why but only said it was important and that she could really use Namine's support.
''Oh...not right now, Makoto wants to meet up. No idea why but this seems like a big deal. I might take you up on that later though.'' Namine said at last.
''Very well then, I'll see you at the meeting point.'' Yusuke returned.
After getting Morgana, who decided to simply take it easy and lie down in a nice spot of shade while they were in the museum, the girl headed was off to Chinatown. It hadn't taken them long to get together with Makoto, who seemed both eager and a little anxious.
''Are we going the right way? I feel like we're going to get lost.'' Makoto admitted.
''Relax, you saw the gate back there. This is Chinatown.'' Namine returned. ''Why did you want to come here anyway?''
''My sister has been working so much and she seems stressed...my father took us here a few times and it was fun.'' Makoto recalled. ''There was this one particular dish we both enjoyed so I thought of bringing some for her along.''
''That sounds nice, so what was it?'' Morgana wondered.
The girl began to think ''Well, Pork buns? Sesame dumplings? No, that's not it...Sorry, it's completely slipped my mind...It has shrimp and cabbage inside, and it's wrapped in rice paper...''
Morgana spared her a dry look ''You mean you remember all that but not the thing's name?''
She groaned ''I know! That's why it's frustrating me...maybe it was that duck recipe they were talking about back there?''
''That doesn't really sound like any duck recipe I've heard of...more like spring rolls.'' Namine added after a moment of thought.
Makoto's eyes widened ''Ah right, that's it! I know I can get them in Tokyo, but it's not quite the same. I might as well have an authentic Chinese one here...''
''I'm pretty sure it's not chinese.'' Morgana stated, leaving the girl confused.
''Never mind the semantics, Makoto, let's go find it.'' Namine returned.
''Right, then let's start with that street!''
Later, the three went to the police office and soon encountered the secretary at the reception, who happened to recognize Makoto which made things easier. If anything, the woman seemed pleased at the brunette's gesture and assured her to go ahead as Sae had some free time now.
Truthfully, Namine wasn't so comfortable with this and she was still a little irritated with Sae for what she put Sojiro and Futaba through. But this was important to Makoto and perhaps she'd come to learn more about the woman eventually so she reminded herself to keep an open mind...
The prosecutor raised an eye in surprise at the sight of her visitors
''Makoto...and Hyakuya-san too? What're you doing here?''
The girls greeted her before Makoto spoke up ''We were just in China town and I wound up recalling our last visit...''
''...which lead to us picking up these.'' Namine pointed at the package in the girl's hand. ''Makoto said you liked spring rolls too so we agreed to bring you some here.''
''I see...'' She took the offered package, her lips twitching. ''...I suppose it has been quite some time. I'm actually surprised you remember that, Makoto.''
''I couldn't forget those times.''
''Hm, well thank you both.'' She returned.
''It's nothing...I wanted to help somehow.'' Makoto said after a moment.
''Well, I appreciate you going through the trouble.''
Morgana blinked ''This is getting kind of awkward, huh?''
Namine thought so too, were things really like this between the sisters? That was sad. She quickly tried to find something to break the awkward silence ''Um, so you're still investigating the Phantom Thieves, right?'' Eyes traveled to her and she added. ''Hey, Makoto? I've heard something weird about how politicians would be jealous of them.''
''It's not really that weird if you think about it.'' Makoto offered.
''Right. Politicians do work to get the public's approval and they seem to be gaining quite a lot of popularity. Especially after the incident with Medjed.'' Sae added.
Namine figured that explained Matsushita's view on the matter. ''I don't know if popularity is all it's cracked up to be though...'' Her own experiences aside, she wound up recalling some of what Yoshida told her before. How it wound up swaying his stance and making him lose track of what was important. ''...public opinion is pretty fickle after all.''
''That's quite the stance, I imagined more people your age would want to be famous.'' Sae mused, thinking of Akechi for a moment.
''To each their own, right?'' She returned.
''Indeed. At any rate, thank you for the trouble but I'll need to be going.'' Sae stood.
''That's all right, we should head out too.'' Makoto returned. ''See you at home.''
I am thou, thou art I
Thou has acquired a new vow
It shall become the wings of rebellion
That breaketh thy chains of captivity
With the birth of the Judgement Arcana,
I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and a new power...
Well, let's stop here.
I wanted to try having Futaba in the gym at least once. She's just trying to get used to the workout now so I didn't see the harm. I didn't want to leave Hijiri forgotten so this seemed like a good chance to show how she's made a turnaround in her life. And as you'd expect, Okumura isn't just about to call it quits after one set back. All the more reason to change his heart. I've been thinking about the Judgement arcana for some time now. I'm not going to use the canon route partly because it wouldn't work with my plot and partly because I wanted to try something different with it. This would also show more about Sae's relationships with the other characters and give me a chance to apply a few scenarios I thought of for her.
Oh and to clarify, Akechi's keeping an eye on Kawanabe for his investigation so he wants to talk to Namine about that. I liked that part where he worked with the protagonist to find out what was going with the man so I'm going to implement it here.
Well, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy it. Till next time!
