Interlude: A voice behind the door.
The worst part of it was the silence. Rey sighed to herself, fingers drumming against the durasteel wall. How long has it been since she had been captured? A day? Surely it hadn't been any longer than that? Within the confines, nothing ever moved. No clocks to tell time, no footsteps down the hall, not even a beam of sunlight to remind her of day or night. Nothing left for her but the silent dread of an eternity within this tom-
KNOCK KNOCK. Before Rey could react, a strange voice emanated from behind the door. "Hello?" The voice sounded like a young man's.
"Hello? Who are you?" Rey shouted back at the voice. The door was solid steel, but she could see movement through the shadows in the doorframe.
"Sshh… Don't shout. I'm a resistance spy, here to get you out."
"How do I trust you?"
"You can trust me, or you can trust Kylo Ren."
"Ok, fair enough." Rey conceded the point. As much as she didn't like the idea of trusting a voice behind a door, this resistance spy was her only means of escaping the First Order. "What should I call you, then?"
"Matt. Call me Matt." The voice shut up decisively. A few awkward seconds pass, as both speakers figure out what to say next. Rey cleared her throat, staring at the shadows under the door frame. The shadows shifted, and the voice spoke up again. "I know you're wondering when I can break you out, but I can't- Not yet, at least. You're currently in one of the First Order's high-surveillance cells, and I'm just a poor useless radar technician." Radar Technician? Before Rey could continue thinking, the figure continued. "Since I usually work up in the radars, I can get a signal off fairly easily to the resistance. If you have any secrets I need to broadcast to them, now's the time to speak."
"Tell them I'm a prisoner here, and that I…" Rey's voice trailed off. Han, Finn, and the others should have gotten BB8 out of there as soon as they could and brought him to the resistance. If everything went according to plan, they'd have brought the map to Skywalker to Leia already. In that case, they didn't need her any longer. Would they still come? They probably just abandoned her as soon as she got caught, just like everyone did. Rey's voice wavered slightly. "Never mind. I don't think they'll need me any longer."
"I- It wouldn't hurt to try, though, right?" The voice sounded startled. Rey stayed silent. Once again, silence reigned for a few seconds, then the voice spoke again. "I'll come back as often as I can. Just stay sane until I find a way out."
Slowly, a routine was set. Three times a day, some bread, a jug of water, and some meat slid through a small chute to her. After the third food drop, the spy would come in and check on her. Rey would ask about the date, and the spy would give her the news on what was going on. Rey stayed silent, then the spy would awkwardly leave. A week and a half passed by slowly.
Clunk! A tray of bread, water, and some meat dropped through a gap. Rey could never understand how they kept everything on the plate when it fell, but she chose not to question it. Right on cue, a dull Thump was heard on the door.
"Sorry." The spy muttered between breaths. "Training's killing me."
"Wait, training?" Ordinarily, Rey would have just waited for him to leave after he tried to make small talk. However, this was the first time he had mentioned anything he was doing, aside from "finding a way out". Plus, a few more days and she'd either go insane or forget how to speak.
"Er, Radar Technician Training. It's an… Advanced course." He hesitated for a short moment there.
"And what is it you do in Advanced Radar Technician Training?" Was she suspicious or just plain bored? Rey couldn't quite decide herself, though she was leaning more towards bored.
"We… Learn how to wipe off antennas… And… clean out the Plasticine indicator?"
"Really? I'm a scavenger for ship parts, and I've never heard of a Plasticine indicator before." Rey briefly wondered how much she could sell one for. It had to be high-grade material, right?
"Oh, it's First Order Technology. Very high tech, very expensive." The spy exhaled for a bit. "BUT ANYWAYS, wouldn't you like to know about the news?" Rey wouldn't like to know about the news. It was the same exact thing for the past week. The first order was stagnated, the resistance wasn't sending news, and Kylo Ren was still off ruining people's lives. "I talked to the guy once. He was terrifying. He's gonna become Darth Vader 2, if you ask me."
"Well, er, thanks for the tidbit. But just between you and me, Matt, I'd love to kick in his dark sith face. Kriffer broke my staff." Rey's emotions flared up, and she felt her fists unconsciously clenching.
"I- I'm sure you would. Well… I've got to go. See you soon." The spy ran off, and Rey fell back into her thoughts.
The very next day, a book fluttered down along with the meal. Squinting her eyes, she stared closely at the symbols. There was a First Order symbol on the top left. On the right, some strange black and white bars. And a weird picture of Darth Vader's helmet in the middle of the cover, with some strange symbols on the top. Flipping through the pages to look at the pictures, Rey almost didn't hear the Thump on the door.
"Matt… Did you send me this book?"
"Yes. I thought being locked in there for a few days might be too much, so I slipped in a book with the food. Swiped it from Kylo Ren's desk."
"I appreciate it, but… I can't read." Not quite true. Rey knew that a certain group of symbols in a certain order meant Trade, Food, or Scrap. Aside from that, however, she couldn't read at all.
"Oh... Well, the book has a few pictures you could look at if you're bored."
"Wait- Won't Kylo Ren realize the book is gone?"
"Don't worry. I don't think he'll miss it." For some reason, Matt sounded extremely confident in this one fact.
"If you say so… Thanks, Matt." Rey flipped through the book, looking through the pictures of Darth Vader. Somehow, despite it only being pictures, she could feel a dread presence, looming over her. Slightly discomfited, she shut the book. Softly sighing, Rey closed her eyes. Was it just her, or did the room turn the faintest tinge of red?
Unconsciously, Rey had begun looking forward to hearing a thump on the door. Part of it was hoping that the door would finally open and she'd get out of the cell. Part of it was simply due to sheer boredom. And a minuscule portion was her looking forward to speaking with Matt again. If she ever managed to escape this cell, she would definitely get Matt in with Finn and the group.
And, right on schedule, a dull Thump was heard on the door.
Author's note: Hey, everyone. As a bit of an apology for the terrible wait times, here's an extra chapter I wrote up just for you guys. Thankfully, we're 1 chapter away from the Finale of this fanfic! (Or, in other words, 2 chapters before I finish off TFA.) Will I do TLJ or ROS? Depends. I'd love to, but frankly, I'm terrible at updating and I'm not sure if I want to subject you guys to 6-10 more years of waiting. But rest assured, I will give this fanfic a conclusive ending.
