My Last Breath

"She doesn't have much time left," the nurse said, but Inuyasha brushed past her and entered the room.

'Stupid doctors...' he thought. Then he saw Kagome. She was so pale she nearly blended into the sheets. The way her raven hair was spread out around her stark-white face, contrasting it...

She had been sleeping for months now, after one of those car things had crashed into her. The doctors said it was something called a coma, but to Inuyasha, it was just sleep.

So why wouldn't she wake up?

He sat down on the edge of her bed and took her hand. Was it just his imagination, or did her fingers move?

Inuyasha was back. She could hear his breath, feel his fingers touching hers. She screamed at her brain over and over to move, and tell him that she was alright, but suddenly she felt so tired.

She felt her body being lifted, and she knew it was Inuyasha.

She willed herself to tell him, tell him everything.

'Inuyasha! Inuyasha!'

He didn't answer.

She was so tired. She just wanted to sleep on and on. 'I must be dying...' she thought slowly. 'Please,' she prayed, 'just a few more minutes of this...'

"I'm not letting you go, Kagome," Inuyasha mumbled fiercely. That time he was sure she had responded. Her head was slumped against his shoulder, and he buried his head in her hair and breathed in her scent. This was the last time he'd ever...

'I'm going to miss it all,' Kagome thought. She could practically hear her heart break, but no tears came.

Inuyasha was shaking. She could hear his sadness, feel it, taste it...it mixed with her own, pulling Kagome further into despair, but in a way she was relieved, because she knew he had gotten the message.

'Now I can die, finally,' Kagome sighed. But...she sucked in her breath and mustered her last remaining strength.

Kagome willed her fingers to move, her lips to form words...

"Inu-yasha...Inuyasha..."

He heard it, but didn't believe it.

"Kagome...you're alive..." He suddenly felt his heart lighten. Kagome sensed his joy, because she shook her head.

"Just for a little while..." she whispered. She grabbed his fire-rat robe and buried her head in his chest. "I-I, love...you."

Her grip relaxed, and she slumped against Inuyasha, her eyes closed.

'No...Kagome...'

Inuyasha shut his eyes tight. When he opened them, he'd be out of this hell, back with Kagome in feudal Japan.

Inuyasha opened his eyes, and nothing had changed. Kagome...she had died in his arms. He was alone in the room, nothing to keep him company but all the machines in the room.

Inuyasha held Kagome's body close, unable to fight the tears any longer.

Kagome felt like she was floating. It was almost relaxing, except she knew all the things she was leaving behind.

She could still see Inuyasha, terrified and despairing at the same time.

The image finally began to fade, until nothing was there.

Nothing...nothing...nothing...nothing...

I love you, Inuyasha...
