SENATOR OZPIN OF VALE…

Imagine having a family of over twenty sons and daughters…

Next, think about choosing between your favourites among them and choose to raise them through their childhoods, while the rest are dumped into an orphanage, where they shall be forgotten for the rest of their lives.

Selfish, indeed… Unfortunately, that is the situation that befalls the Faunus species in the galaxy, particularly in the Remnant System.

Centuries of subjugation and prejudice had not been too kind to the near-human species, forcing them to live a life of fear from the growing cynical hatred by those who consider them as inferior humans or mutants. After a period of time, the Republic had given us, the governments of Remnant, the power to decide what should happen to the many Faunus victims suffering from threats outside their control.

And the decision… colonize a moon with little to no significance in the Remnant System and use it to house in the prime majority of the Faunus. It might sound like a thoughtful idea, but when you look closely at the very moon the leaders chose, at the time, you will find that the move suffered from a foolish lack of foresight, rather than the charitable cause of giving the people a safe haven.

Of course, the leaders responsible for authorizing this mission were not the most influential, their decisions marred by decent to slanderous motives.

This is the story of Menagerie…

One of four moons orbiting the planet Anima, the natural satellite that would soon be named was filled with tropical environments, with the entire body covered in 85% water, dotted by a range of landmasses, ranging from tiny islands to large archipelagos. Seaside forests and cliff islands provided the moon with a unique look compared to other worlds.

A suitable site for tourism, that's for sure. In fact, Menagerie was once considered by the Animan government to be used as a site for a grand tourist attraction. To use the oceanic beauty of the moon to provide a relaxing, tranquil vacation for many galactic travellers.

Unfortunately, that all changed when the Faunus Wars broke out…

When the conflict between the Faunus and several anti-Faunus factions spread throughout Remnant, plans were put on hold. The governments were forced to focus their attention on the brewing war within their respective worlds. Faunus movements throughout the major cities began to cripple political, economic and social forces throughout Remnant, while colonies were threatened by the possibility of invasion; that no matter which side they served, their opposing sides would take over.

The Faunus, in particular, grew in constant fear. Those who did not ask to be part of the conflict dreaded retaliation from both sides. If they chose to join their fellow fighters in battle, they would be punished by the ruling governments. And if they chose to stay away from the fight, then Faunus extremists would be sure to make an example of those who they viewed as cowards.

The war soon came to a head when multiple skirmishes played throughout the system, plaguing Faunus lives; both in battle and off the front…

When the war was all but over, the damage was incomprehensible. Because of the majority of non-Faunus forces in Remnant, the population suffered far worse than the other side. Mass anti-Faunus movements crowded the capital cities, raids conducted by ordinary citizens chase out or subdue Faunus citizens, and even attacks that should have been labelled as hate crimes continued to exterminate known pro-Faunus belligerents throughout the galaxy.

Not even children were safe from the blind hatred of so many…

It was a wave of hate, ignorance and xenophobia never before seen since the years of Pius Dea.

Eventually, when the violence was too much for the Republic to ignore, many Senators at the time pressured the Remnant Councils to take action to prevent further disarray. In a move that shocked many, the Councils agreed that instead of curbing the violence head-on, a single asylum was needed to ensure that the Faunus of Remnant would be protected from forces beyond their control. A safe haven, they called it.

But we all knew what the motive truly was…

The moon of Menagerie would be chosen as the sole colony that would belong to the Faunus, but would remain under the protection of Anima. A mass exodus soon followed, with thousands of Faunus exiles forced to find safety in a world they thought would supplement them. All around Remnant, even as cries for justice for the Faunus wars outweighed the reasonable actions of the few, thousands of ships transporting Faunus citizens travelled all at once to this small moon…

Making every single person on board refugees…

As soon as the Faunus landed, trouble was already ahead of them. From the boarding and departure stations, newcomers would be subjugated to military quarantine, to ensure that no pro-Faunus sentiment be allowed into the moon, without even as much consideration for the opposite. Many Faunus people would be wrongfully suspected or even arrested by Remnant military, forcing them back to lives of hate and fear back home.

For the many that did make it pass the borders, they were soon forced to find life for themselves; build their own settlements, using what little supplies and materials the Republic could give them. The islands were not as welcoming to the settlers. Faced with the natural elements and predatory creatures that ruled both land, sea and sky, the challenges of the Faunus were only just beginning.

Thankfully, the Faunus' natural ability to survive in conditions uninviting to most had given them an advantage. Thanks to their incredible sense of endurance and adaptability, Menagerie would soon be a thriving world for the refugees. The islands became new land for new settlements. More and more Faunus settlers would arrive to turn small villages into larger towns. The Remnant system began to open up to Menagerie, as it is now recognized as a small state of Anima, though still allowed to maintain its own government.

Still though, it is hardly a triumph for the Faunus.

Despite the tensions being softened over the centuries, the hatred is still there. To this day, people are still willing to believe that the Faunus are nothing more than abominations, unfit for a galaxy that, ironically, has countless beings of many differences.

To the wider galaxy, the problems of the Faunus seemed nothing more than a speck of dust, easy to flick off and forget…

But now, I fear that our ignorance to their plight has allowed other darker elements to evolve. As we continue to dive into the threat of war, Faunus extremists have been making their move, slowly creeping in the shadows as vivid memories of the past and feelings of injustice continue to fuel the fires that would burn down society as we know it. The decries of the Faunus Wars would inspire would-be terrorists that could pose a threat far worse than the Separatists; a plot that could spell the end of Remnant's integrity.

Such a shame that we chose to result to such lazy, unethical methods to extinguish the flames of hate and ignorance. The Faunus did not deserve such a fate. To see them devolve into unwilling victims or hateful extremists is a reminder that no one side is righteous; that we can become so foolish to disregard these 'small' problems before they grow into threats that we will not be able to handle while a war is raging.

I can only hope that my old friend is running things properly in Menagerie… Very soon, I should keep a note to evaluate my reports on the Faunus soon in a future entry. Hopefully, I can find a permanent solution to this unfortunate crisis.

While I continue to monitor Menagerie in its stance against the looming threats, inside and out, I must now revert my attention to the other smaller worlds that are under the umbrella of Remnant's sphere of influence. Worlds that could very well be in the crossfire should the war ever reach our system. Worlds that could potentially split apart between two warring sides...

My next report on the Colonies of Remnant shall be ready soon…
