Negative

Ginny sighed, resting her head against the wall. Another negative pregnancy test. Harry was waiting for her in the kitchen downstairs, and she hated that she had to go and disappoint him yet again. For months, they'd done this same routine, a late period, a negative result.

It was a pattern that she was loathe to continue.

She'd tried speaking to her mum about it, but that had been of little help. Her mum had told her to have Harry tested for infertility; it couldn't be Ginny with the problem, Weasley's were all fertile.

True enough when you looked at how many nieces and nephews she had. Only Charlie remained childless, and that was certainly by choice, rather than design.

When she made it to the kitchen, Harry didn't even need to be told. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders, pulling her into the V his legs made, sitting on the breakfast bar stool.

"I'll make us an appointment at Saint Mungo's," he murmured softly. "We'll both get tested."

Her heart sank as the Healer explained their results to them. Harry was fine, his sperm count completely normal.

"There are potions that can help you ovulate," the Healer explained, when Harry asked if there was anything to be done. "And if that doesn't work, there are always muggle remedies. IVF has been known to aid witches and wizards conceive, when potions haven't helped."

Ginny felt Harry squeeze her hand, and she tried to offer him a smile, but she was sure it was more of a grimace.

She felt numb.

She was defective. Defunct.

Her mother was wrong; apparently Weasleys weren't always fertile.

"I don't want to do any more," she whispered, hiding her face in Harry's neck.

Her period was late again.

"It always just leaves us sad and disappointed. Maybe we should just… give up?"

"You're putting too much pressure on yourself, sweetheart," Harry replied. "Relax. It'll happen when it's meant to happen and if it doesn't, we'll look into adoption. We could give a kid a good home, even if it's not biologically ours."

She nodded, her tears slowing. "I'll go and take the test."

Two lines have never looked so good.

"James, get your coat, Al, tie your shoes, Lily! Please stop tormenting the poor cat!"

Ginny was about ready to pull her hair out. Harry stepped up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.

"Remember when you were scared we wouldn't have this?" he murmured into her neck. "Relax, baby. We'll get there in time."

She nodded, leaning back into his body. "I wouldn't change our family for the world," she replied quietly. "But now that Lily is heading to Hogwarts with the boys, I won't say I won't enjoy having you to myself again."

Harry laughed against her skin. "I love you."

"I love you too."
