I've always wondered what Cowley says to his new recruits to make them so willing to ignore everything except their job. This is my attempt at his welcoming' speech.
Peace and Justice
It is the right of every man to live in peace. Is it the right of every man to expect justice to be done. But not every man has the power to defend his rights.
That's where we come in.
It's hard work this job. Long hours, tough hours. Months will go by before even half a day off becomes a possibility, and you'll feel every second you're on duty.
Of course, in this job, you are never truly off duty. Standby. That describes your off hours. RT's and identification are to be kept with you at all times.
Unlike other, more conventional organisations, there is no such thing as public holidays for us. The people we go after are not members of the public. Members of the public we leave to the local police, they're what the local police are paid for.
The people we go after are not your average citizens. The people we go after are the people who your average citizen could be forgiven for seeing as being above the law. Therefore these are the people with the highest responsibility to uphold the law. Unfortunately, this also means these are the people who find it easiest to break the law.
These are the people we go after.
Politicians.
Government officials.
Dignitaries.
The big fish. The ones who can make the biggest waves. The public figures with something to hide. These are the people we go after. We step on toes, we cut through red tape. The toes we step on and the tape we cut through reveal the people who hide behind these layers of protection. The people who have a reason to need this protection are the people we take down.
The people who abuse their positions, and not at risk purely to themselves. If they were the only ones endangered this organisation would never have been formed. But the actions of these people endanger everything; peace and justice.
Peace, so the average person can live their average life.
Justice, so those who deserve it can be punished for their crimes.
These two ideals are why this organisation was formed. These two ideals are why the extensive training you have gone through is necessary. These two ideals are why we work so hard, and I'll back every effort you make to uphold these ideals to the hills.
The efforts we make are what count. The efforts we make can mean the difference between innocent people bleeding on the streets, and innocent people sleeping safely in their beds.
Our efforts lead to criminals being routed out of the hiding places they make for themselves, being sentenced.
Our efforts lead to peace.
Our efforts lead to justice.
Well? Did that inspire you to join a secret police organisation and forsake everything to see justice done? Probably not. But I hope it has inspired you to leave a review.
If you have a story idea you would like me to write, leave it in a review, or e-mail me with it and I'll see what I can do. I need the inspiration, I'm being crushed by writer's block!
Please help me!
