I am sorry about the long wait for this chapter, only a year or more, but my a-levels stared and so did other stuff and the more I couldn't do it the less I remembered to do it. Hopefully, this chapter will make up a little bit for that. I have gone back and corrected my spelling in the previous chapters, well at least I hope most of it (if you see any please tell me). Well, let's begin with this new chapter. ENJOY!
Chapter Six
5,845 Miles From Home.
Neon signs brightly illuminated the bustling streets of Tokyo; Harry had just touched down on Japanese soil a few hours before. He had taken a plane to get there, which was a very new and unusual experience for him. However, he could not risk apparating into the country, using magic would only draw the Japanse ministry to his presence.
He now snaked his way through the city crowds, he had a very vague idea of where he was going. There were many spots in Tokyo where a wizard or which could gain access to the wizarding world. Many important muggle buildings had areas where those who possessed magic could pass through. Like King's Cross Station in London, Tokyo Sation provided access to the rest of the magical world across Japan.
Harry was, however, looking for a back door, a place where he would not be detected when entering the magical world. It was beginning to rain when he turned down a narrow dark alley, he stopped before an old bar named: 'Kakushi', meaning 'Hidden'.
When he entered there were only a few souls inside, the bartender and a couple of customers, he made his way to the bar and put his case down.
"Sorry to bother you, but I am looking for a place to stay." He used a small amount of magic to translate his and their speech.
"Well, sir, I recommend the Sleeping Lodge, just down on the main street. It is both comfortable and affordable," the bartender replied, he set a glass down which he had just cleaned.
"Forgive me, but I was looking for somewhere a bit more off the beaten track." He corrected.
There seemed to be a change in the atmosphere in the small area, "Very well, sir, if you will follow me."
"Thank you," Harry replied before following the man to a back room.
That room was smaller than the last, it was barren apart from a small set of stairs leading to the next floor and a rustic door on the opposite wall to where they entered. From his robe, the old balding man pulled out a wand, it seemed to be well used and sported a few cracks and dents.
The man stood before the door and held his wand up in front of him. The door began to glow at the edges, he waved his wand in a fascinating pattern leaving a golden trail in its wake; Harry was sure that what he had drawn was a dragon, but he could not be sure. Then the door vanished, leaving a gaping hole in the wall; beyond he could see a bar similar to the one he had just left.
"When should I expect your return." The man politely asked.
"I wouldn't expect it." He pulled a pouch from his pocket, "I believe that this will be a suitable payment."
The bartender opened the pouch and looked inside, "I believe it will. Have a pleasant trip, sir."
Harry stepped through, the hole vanished and was replaced by the rustic door.
He made his way onto the street outside the bar, he was confronted with another dark alleyway, the ground beneath his feet was not paved but rather a dirt path that had become rather muddy, it appeared that it had also been raining in the magical world. The walls that enclosed the alley were not made of brick but rather planks of wood, they were worn and broken in places and had become dark over the years due to grime and filth gathering on them.
Harry looked both ways and decided that he would go left as the exit looked closer in that direction. Soon he found himself immersed in a busy street, the buildings on either side were built closely together, there wasn't a gap between them; there were areas between groups of housing where small gardens sat full of greenery and brightly coloured flowers. Along the street were cherry blossom trees, their branches coated thickly in pink petals which would flow down the road on the waves of the passing breeze.
At regular intervals, old wooden streetlamps brightened up the street by basking it in warm candlelight.
Harry hadn't seen anything like it before. The wooden houses with overhanging roofs and slatted windows were a striking contrast to the brick buildings of Diagon Alley.
Although it was night, the streets were still alive with people, many shops were still open, wizards and whiches were sat in the coffee and tea shops that seemed commonplace in the town. Stalls were set up on the street, as Harry walked past each one he found himself cocooned in a dazzling blanket of rich smells, of spices and herbs he had never smelt before.
It reminded him that he had not eaten for a long time, and as much as he wished to continue, he found himself drawn to a stall.
He ordered Sukiyaki, a traditional dish of beef, vegetables and tofu cooked in a sweet soy sauce, as well as a portion of Yakitori (bite-sized cuts of chicken grilled on a skewer).
Once he was done, he made his way further up the street. He came across a towering temple in gold and red, it stood shimmering in the light of the lamps that surrounded it. Harry could see gold and silver dragons glistening as they danced up the walls and columns of the temple, they moved with such fluidity that it was mesmerising to watch.
"It's magnificent, isn't it." Harry was started by the voice beside him, he did, however, managed to keep his composure.
"I have seen many beautiful buildings in my lifetime, castles and manors, but none quite like this." There was a scream of a collared scops owl as it swooped down from the high temple roof and disappeared into the night.
"You are not from around here then?" The man asked he was a short gentleman with ivory hair and wrinkled skin.
Harry had to be careful with his following words, he didn't want anyone to become suspicious about him. "No, I'm here on vacation, travelling the world before settling down somewhere."
The man chuckled, "there is so much world to see, you sure you will have the time?"
Harry smiled to himself, "I'm sure I will have plenty of time."
"Are you looking for somewhere to stay tonight?"
"No, I must be on my way." He made towards the forest that laid behind the temple.
"You can't be going into the forest at this time of night?" The man question, he seemed confused and puzzled. Harry merely smiled at him before carrying on. "Please, sir, you look tired. Why don't you rest before embarking on your journey?"
Harry hesitated for a moment, it was true, he was tired. He had been unwisely neglecting his bodies needs on his journey. "I have no time for sleep, thank you for your concern, but I really must go."
He passed into the shadows of the forest, leaving the man watching him as he vanished into the jungle. Once he was sure that he was far enough away, he buried his case next to a large rock. He had retrieved the elder wand, the invisibility cloak and the snitch. He took the items and placed them in his pocket using an extension charm so he could fit the objects inside. He then transformed into his animagus form before bounding off into the dense forest.
For what felt like hours, he ran; he had no path which he was following and was only guided by trails of magic in the air. It guided him over hills and through rivers until he came to a large lake at the foot of a towering snowy topped mountain. It was then when he stopped to regain his breath, he would need it for what was to come.
Looking up to the sky, he saw the stars shining down upon him, but the Moon was absent from the Heavens. An icy wind brushed over him, his black fur danced as it passed. Placing a paw into the freezing water, he advanced into the lake. Gloomy clouds crept over the horizon.
It wasn't long before he was in the centre of the lake and if his research was correct, the entrance to the cave was directly below him. He cast a bubble-head charm and then began his forty-foot dive below the lake surface.
As he descended, he could hear the distant cries and calls of water-dwelling creatures and mentally prayed that there were no Japanese merpeople. When he reached the bottom of the lake, there was very little light, only his enhanced vision as a wolf let him see beyond his paws.
The rocks around his were blurry in his sight; but as he turned, he caught a glimmer of silver on the lake floor. Then, as he swam towards it, he noticed that it was, in fact, a sword and that the lake bed was littered with them, scattered amongst the bones of their masters. It wasn't reassuring, then again, at least he knew that he was in the correct place.
He followed the skeletons and, as the underwater graveyard grew denser and denser, he found himself before the submerged cave mouth. What he sought laid within.
As close as he was to his goal, he did not know what laid inside the cave; many armies had been sent to seek the riches that laid within, none had ever come back, and it was clear now why they had not.
Nevertheless, he had not travelled halfway across the world to turn back at the mear thought of this unknown creature, and so he advanced into the dark. Even in his wolf form, Harry could see very little of his surroundings, it left him vulnerable, something he very much despised.
He paused for a moment and mentally debated where he should turn back into his human form, then he could use his wand to perform magic much more powerful than he could in his wolf body. Then, suddenly, he sensed movement about him; the creature was here, it was alive (he had silently prayed that it had died many years prior).
Behind him, there was a flicker of light, an orange glow, much like that of a fire. When he turned to it, it was gone. Then again, there was a flicker of light; and when he turned to it this time he found himself, once again, faced with darkness.
The creature was toying with him! Playing with him like he was some amusing plaything. He realised that he was starting to panic; the flashes of light became increasingly frequent, and he could vaguely make out a snake-like body coiling up around him. He looked up and mercifully saw the surface of the water. He pulled himself upward; and as he breached the surface, his face bubble broke. Quickly, glancing around he found a shelf in the interior of the cave, immediately, he dashed it and pulled himself onto the dry surface. He was quick to turn back to human form and draw his wand, mere seconds later, the beast breached the surface of the water.
The creature was a type of snake, it resembled a basilisk in shape but not in size, it was undoubtedly ten times as big as the basilisk he had faced. Its scales, however, were not dull in appearance but rather an elegant mosque of red, gold and black. Those around its head flared up away from the skin creating a deadly lion-like mane; Harry found the source of the light, it was the snake itself, who as emitting the light. Golden light seeped through the gaps between the scales, and as they lifted and shifted the intensity of the light increased.
The snake locked it's pitch black eyes on him and hissed, its jaw opened wide to reveal black fangs which dripped with golden venom.
"Sectumsempra!" Harry yelled; the spell raced towards the serpent and hit it directly but only left a scratch on the scales.
Harry was quick to fire another curse: "Expulso!" He roared. The spell, however, was only able to remove the scales it had hit and did not do any further damage.
Realising he was outmatched, Harry looked for an escape; his eyes landed on a crack in the wall, he hoped that he would be able to pass through it. Casting one more spell at the serpents head, he dashed for the opening. The gap was just big enough for him, his robes catching on sharp rocks and others inflicting shallow wounds; the snake was approaching quickly, and Harry had merely made it a safe distance in when the snake's jaws attempted to clamp around the opening and several broken parts of its fangs fell to the floor.
The crack ran deep into the wall, he prayed that it was not a dead-end and that he would not have to go back to face the creature again. Thankfully, he neared the other opening and pushed himself free.
He found himself stood in a tall chamber. The chamber floor was circular with a small diameter. This chamber seemed to have been made by people; large square stones lined the walls of the bell-shaped area, the were inscriptions on many of the boulders, in both Japanese and other old languages.
It was the curve of the wall directly before Harry, which drew his attention. In the place of stone was a shimmering silver wall which danced and flowed like a liquid, occasionally darkness would pass over it, or it would gain a red tint. However, its beauty held a dark secret which Harry knew all too well, for its cousin had stolen one who he had loved so dearly away from him.
Harry pulled the items he had brought with him from his pocket. He flung the invisibility cloak over himself, and brought the golden snitch to his lips; the golden ball opened to reveal a glistening black stone. He took it in one hand, and with the elder wand in the other, he made his way to the shimmering wall and passed through.
I hope you enjoyed this chapter, feel free to leave a review (and perhaps shout at me for not writing for so long), I hope this is the start of many more chapters now that I know where I am wanting to take the story at the moment.
