Author's note: Do not own Inuyasha or Death note. Thank you all for the reviews . They really keep me going. Hope you all like this one..

Apologies for the long wait. I have not lost inspiration for this fic. I did get distracted by a few others that wouldn't leave me alone. I also had a lot to deal with emotionally/mentally/physically. I'm back :)

I'm scared with what's inside my head, what's inside my soul. I feel like I'm running but getting nowhere, Fear is suffocating me.. I can't breath. I feel like I'm drowning, sinking deeper. White Light fades to red. As I enter the city of the dead-Eurille- City of the Dead (Omg that song. Beautiful check it out! I love the latin in it. only did the first verse though. I can't spell latin to save my life. I think the song really suits this story. ) .

Mello tapped his fingers on the table watching the screens. He had come as soon as he could. Now both he and Matt were freeze framing the image of the man spying on the same girl they were.

"I can't get a good look at him. " He sighed frustrated

"L hasn't contacted us yet either."

"He will" Matt said unconcerned about that at the moment, he was playing on the Nintendo thinking and processing. The only sign of his conern was a tension in his shoulders. Unnoticeable to most, but clear as day to Mello.

"I don't think he's a danger to her. Whoever this is, Is clearly protecting her but from who and why?"

"Besides if he meant her harm. He'd have attacked why she was alone. "

Mello snorted and took a bite of his chocolate bar.

"Wouldn't surprise me that someone would be concerned about her. I mean, look what happened the other day, she just jumped to help you, without knowing if we are dangerous or not, I nearly shot her. He probably knows of the tendency to act before she thinks. Judging from her actions and chosen career choice. She can't stand not helping.' She could have gotten caught up with the wrong people"

"We're the wrong sort of people..Sort of depends how you look at it." Matt replied.

"My point."

Matt looked up at him squinting his green eyes.

"You don't think it's because of us?"

"No" Mello sighed.

"He said. "If Ryuk dragged her into this he'll deal with me." As far as I know . Neither of us know a Ryuk.

Mello switched to watching the camera where Kagome was, she was still in the shrine at two in the morning, she was like a woman possessed. What got into her? Mello noticed Matt's attention leave his game to watch her movements. Mello almost raised an eyebrow. Smirking he took a bite of the chocolate again half way down on the bar. Not that he could blame him, you get passed the fact she could very well be deranged, she was pretty. Not in the movie star kind of way , It was a graceful beauty. One that shown within and out. She also from what he observed, and if the diary would be believed. What she wrote. She had an inner beauty that reflected on the outside. She cared for people. He saw proof that she put them before herself. Even strangers. A rare quality. One Mello never saw in his line of work.

Kagome eventually fell asleep in the storage room, surrounded by boxes , with her fat cat curled up at her neck to keep her warm. Mello had been cleaning his gun, since it got rather boring after a while. He stopped though at movement, at first he thought he had imagined it, a shadow in the corner just outside the camera's view. But, a moment later someone appeared in front of the camera. It was that man again.

He was tall, with pale skin, silver hair and wore a white suit with a black tie. He looked normal, that was until the light of the moon hit him, suddenly he was a few inches taller, his ears became pointed, his eyes golden and flashed in the camera and a mark of a crescent moon on his forhead. Mello tensed as he got closer to the woman, but as Matt had guessed. He didn't harm her. Instead he knelt beside her, brushing two fingers over her forehead. As he whispered something they couldn't make out.

The mystery man then went to the main room and grabbed some of the pelts. Before putting them over the girl. When he was done. He seemed to move directly in front of the camera looking at it. The problem was it was so fast the camera didn't catch the movment. One moment he was in the room the next he was in the hallway looking directly at the camera there. Which was so small he shouldn't of been able to see it.

"I know your watching, when it involves this Miko. Nothing escapes this sesshomaru's notice. This one is tolerating it for now.- a moment pause- however. If anything happens , I'm holding you responsible. You'll have a lot worse things after you than Kira Do. Not. Involve . Her. Do you understand? You'll regret it if you do." There was a flash of green and the camera went static.

Mello and Matt exchanged glances, before either of them could say something, Their computer screen went white and L's logo appeared and his thankfully uncryptic voice filled the room.

"Well that confirms any lingering doubts that Kagome's Diary was speaking the truth, not that I had any doubts in the first place. I was able to dig up some old scripts , and legends confirming some parts of the story, This man confirmed any lingering doubts. I believe this is the demon lord Kagome described as Shessomaru" L's voice was husky as if he was thinking as he was talking.

"So she isn't crazy? But the stories are so hard to believe. ." Mello sighed rubbing his temples.

"As hard to believe as hundreds of criminals dropping dead of heart attacks and being controlled before death?" L Countered.

"No, it's just hard to grasp, Demons, Priestesses' magic?" Mello snorted.

"It's like a bad fantasy novel."Mello glanced at the other camera that had a view of the storage room, Kagome was still asleep and seemed to bury her nose in the fur, inhaling it she snuggled closer whatever she smelled must of comforted her.

"Do you think she can help us then L?" Matt put his game down and pulled out a cigarette and grabbing the lighter, putting it in his mouth there was a soft "Click" and flame ignited in his hand lighting up his face briefly in the darkness of the room, which only light was the glow of screens.

"To that, I have no doubt." L said there was a clink of metal against porcelain and then a sip like noise. He must of been having tea. Mello did not see how those two could be so calm, he was on edge.

"He said not to involve her, and I'm inclined to agree with him we'd be putting an innocent's life In danger." Matt replied.

"We don't have to involve her directly, not right at this moment." L said, there was a sound of typing.

"I have on good authority that our main suspect in the Kira case knows her, I don't believe she knows anything. Their fathers were partners in their early days in the NBA. He may try to approach her, or let his guard down."

"Do you think she's in danger?" This time Mello decided to say something, she was innocent but if Kira thought of her as a threat..

"At this moment, No."

"Then what do you suppose we do?" Mello took another bite of his chocolate, a million scenarios going through his head, none of them good.

"For now, get close to her let her get to know you. We need for her to trust us. Or at least you two. If her sense of Justice is as strong as I think it is, she'll come to us in her own time. I'm not saying tell her directly that your working on the case, Let her figure it out. Getting close would allow you to get closer to Light Yagami , who has agreed to join the "Investigations" . He doesn't know that you two are around. so he shouldn't suspect you if Kagome introduces you as friends.

Mello groaned, considering they were infiltrating the criminal underground, they'd still be putting her in danger. Or at least he specifically would be putting a target on her head.

"I'm getting in rather deep in the Red Lotus, If she's seen with us she'll be a target for other gangs."

"Not necessarily" Matt's green eyes lit up with an idea, Mello didn't like that smirk appearing.

"What are you thinking, that I'm not going to like?" He narrowed his eyes at him.

"With kira around, the gangs and hard core criminals are keeping a low profile, they don't want to have a gang war right now.."

Mello's eyes widened , it clicked what Matt was getting at.

"No, absolutely not, its still not a guarantee"

"It's better than nothing."

"No don't say it. "

Matt's smirk widened.

"Fuck" He cursed.

Kagome stretched her sore muscles as the bell rang. She twisted her back from left to right before gathering her supplies. She was dead tired, she stayed up later than she intended in her frantic search through the early hours of the morning. She awoke to warm furs. She assumed put there by her Grandfather. Furs that smelled like Kouga and his pack. The scent carried in the wind at their arrival, of the cave. It wasn't actually a bad smell. But it made her heart ache painfully.

Kagome turned in her paper and headed out to meet Eri. They met at the gym. Getting their half hour of excersise in, a quick shower, and change into their scrubs and they were ready to go to their internships.

"How do you think you did on the test?" Eri asked as they entered the hospital building.

"I don't want to jinx it, but I feel like I did very well. I only struggled on two questions."

"That's great Kagome, I'm nervous but rather confident."

Kagome and Eri arrived at the elevator. Pressing the up button Kagome waited. Part of Kagome wanted to go back to the shrine and continue her search. Those thoughts were quickly pushed out of her mind, once on the sixth floor, the floor she and Eri were assigned to . Minor injuries, burns, cuts, returning patients for check ups on how their wounds were healing. The elevator doors opened and they were at the nursing station right across from it, but what caused her to pause. Was the man standing in front of it, his arms crossed and leaning on the counter. A man she had met only a few short days ago.

"Matt?" She stepped out of the Elevator and went over to him. Rather briskly, she feared that something was wrong.

Matt turned upon hearing his name being called. His previously bored neutral expression he wore why talking to the nurse behind the desk. Brightened and he gave her a greeting.

"Kagome it is nice to see you in better circumstances."

He gave a smile that reached his enchanting green eyes. Now without adrenalin coursing through her, or maybe it was the bright florescent lighting. Kagome could now really see just how green they were. Endless green full of life, that reminded her of a sea of grass. Most would have probably compared them to emeralds but, not kagome. Stones were lifeless and cold. That just wasn't the man in front of her.

Kagome didn't even think twice as she snapped herself out of her stupor, and went about appraising him up and down. In the fluorescent lights, she could see that he was about a head taller than her, which wasn't surprising She was on the short side, and he was American. The none Asian countries seemed to be taller in her experience. Minus the demons she had known.

Matt had a lean build, if she hadn't seen him without his shirt she wouldn't of known of the muscles that his striped shirt and vest hid. His goggles on his head. Showing off his green eyes that she had to continueously force herself not to stare at. Now that she thought about it she didn't think she had met anyone with green eyes before. She tried to remain professional and not linger in any spot to long. His reddish brown hair that went past his ears, his bangs falling in front of him. Brushed mostly to one side, with a little on the other. She did not see any blood or signs of discomfort she gave a breath of relief.

Matt gave a smirk.

"You done staring Kagome?"

Kagome felt heat rise into her cheeks hotter than they had ever gotten before. She was sure she never even blushed this hard for Inuyasha. How had he noticed? She was sure she never let her gaze linger to long.

He just winked playfully and waved her off.

"Relax Kagome. I was just teasing. I hope you don't mind me dropping by at your job here unannounced."

"It's fine." It was Kagome's turn to wave him off.

"You just startled me. Are you alright? Your stiches did not reopen did they? Are you in any pain?"

"No I'm fine, I'm healing well thanks to you. I just wanted to thank you properly."

"Why do you need to thank Kagome?" Eri gave a questioning suspicious look.

Kagome jumped a bit. She had completely forgotten Eri was there.

"Eri" Kagome gave a nervous giggle.

"This is Matt, Matt this Is Eri. She's one of my best friends, and co worker."

"It's a pleasure to meet you. Kagome here helped me out of a tough jam. She went out of her way actually. Saved my life."

Eri gave am ear splitting grin.

"That sounds like her. She didn't even know you before hand did she?"

"Eri" Kagome whined.

"Not in the least bit."

"That's going to get you in trouble one day Kagome." Eri gave her a disapproving look.

If only she knew. Kagome couldn't even count the number of times she put herself in danger for others. She wouldn't change a single moment of that reckless behavior. Kagome quickly switched topics from dangerous territories.

"You came all the way over here just to thank me? You could of sent a card."

Matt gave a carefree lazy smile.

"It means more in person. I do actually have another reason for coming here."

"What reason is that?" SHe asked curiously.

"I was wondering if your free this Saturday. If I could take you out for lunch or just a coffee. It's the least I can do. Besides I want to know more about this woman who decided she'd jump in to save me.'

Kagome felt her face flush. Was he asking her out? There was something in his gaze that said he was interested in more than just thanking her. She hadn't been asked out since her disastrous date with Hojo last year. Was she truly ready? She was still in love with Inuyasha, a part of her always would be. Should that hold her back from having a life? She felt conflicted. She wanted to stay loyal to Inuyasha. At the same time she wanted a family one day of her own. She couldn't get that if she didn't try. After a few more moments of contemplation. With Eri holding her breath beside her. She had been urging her to move on from her ex . Who she beelived left for the states years ago. Kagome had never been the same.

Kagome took a deep breath. Coming to her decision. The hardest one she had to make since her wish on the jewel. She decided to take the leap.

"Sure, I'd love to have lunch with you. This happens to be my Saturday off from my job."

Matt looked surprised at first before he gave a teasing smile. Eri was shaking. Radiating happiness. Kagome knew once Matt was gone. She would be pestered for details. Kagome was still in a daze and shocked her self that she took the jump she had been to afraid to for years. Sango would be proud that she was starting to take control.

Matt, with rather quick reflexes took her cellphone.

"Hey!"

He just chuckled and typed quickly into her phone, his number. For he and Mello already had hers.

"Here, for if you need to reach me. One sound alright? I can pick you up."

"One sounds good." Kagome hesitated. She had never brought a man home with her that wasn't Inuyasha. A stranger no doubt. She had always been reckless why should she stop now. What's the worse that he could do? IF he wanted to harm her he already would have. Or Mello would have.

Kagome since he was right there. Did not text him her address. Instead she leaned over the nurses station to grab a pen and a post it note. Ignoring the nurses incredulous look. She had been eavesdropping the entire time. Quickly, with as neat of handwriting as possible. Scribbled down the address to the Higarshi shrine. With one last breath she handed it to him. There was no going back now.

Matt gave her a wink, and gave Eri a greeting of goodbye. Once Matt was in the elevator and it closed. Kagome was tugged, rather hard by her arm into the empty break room.

"Ok spill! How did you meet this guy an American by the sound of his accent.? Why didn't you tell me? Have you known him long? What's he like? He's clearly into you.

'Eri. It's just lunch. Just like he said. I saw that he got hurt and ran to help him. He was bleeding rather badly."

Kagome didn't give details. She didn't want Eri thinking she was getting involved with another "Bad-Boy" Which wouldn't actually be to unfounded she supposed. She really did attract attention. Hojo, Kouga, Inuyasha. This was different. He didn't claim that she was his woman like kouga, cling like Hojo. Or dodge around like Inuyasha. He actually properly asked her out. It was strange and a new territory she did not know how to deal with. He wanted to get to know her? She had a hard time with that.

"I didn't tell you, because I didn't think it was worth noting. He was just a guy I helped. I didn't think about it."

Actually she had. She was burning with curiosity herself, which she supposed was what drew her to agreeing.

"I don't know much about him, It wasn't the longest conversation. He was passed out through most of it. That would be the "Getting to know you" part of the lunch. He isn't into me. He doesn't know me yet. This is just two people meeting for lunch. Don't be thinking to much into this Eri."

Eri was giving a look that clearly said she was.

"Whatever you say. I want details after! Don't go thinking that this conversation is over."

"I'll think about it." Kagome smiled before signing in and getting ready. How she managed to get through the shift. Kagome did not know.

By the time Kagome arrived back to her family's shrine. She was starting to have conflicted feelings about her upcoming date. So she was rather relieved so see her mom up and cooking.

Kagome! Welcome home.

She gave a smile, though her eyes narrowed in on her.

"What's wrong Kagome?"

Kagome sighed, figures she would know right away. Her mother always had a way of telling.

"I'm not sure I've made the right decision today."

"On?" Her mother turned away from the cooking pot and took a seat. Kagome followed. The rice would take a while.

"There's this boy..His name's Matt."

"An American? A boy? You've not had any in your life for a while."

"He asked me to have lunch or coffee to get to know me. I said yes, I'm just not sure if I'm ready."

"Well, what made You say yes?"

Kagome thought about it. Taking herself back to the thoughts that had been swirling around her head. There had been many.

"That..I was never going to get things in my life that I want to do. If I stay clamed up. I feel like I've been in the rut. Each day the same just repeating the motions Mom."

"He's..Diffrent. I can't explain it, but I want to know more about him."

"But?" Her mother probed gently.

"But I feel like I'm betraying Inuyasha by doing so."

Mrs Higarashi who had been making tea why Kagome went off on her thoughts. Passed a steaming cup over to her.

"Well. It seems like you truly are interested, or you would not have had those thoughts dear."

"It's hard to move on when you lose someone you love. That doesn't mean you forget about them, or how much they mean to you."

"What about you? You never dated or re-married after PaPa died."

Kagome for a moment thought she had hurt her mothers feelings. Instead Mrs Higarashi just smiled and patted the top of her hand.

"He was the love of my life. He gave me you and souta. I learned to cope and move on through the raising of you. I have not once been unhappy, there has not been anything I wanted. I didn't have the feeling of needing something. You are young yet. I say at least talk to the young man. See where it goes. You won't ever know if you don't take a small step."

"Thanks Mom." Kagome gave a soft sigh. Her mother was right but her heart clenched. She still expected the well to open up at anytime. Inuyasha would come running, telling her she was taking to long dragging her back to the feudal era.

where her second family lived. Sango and Miroku. Shippo and Kaede and little Kilala. She missed them. It felt like something had been ripped from her that she could never get back, or have a hope to mend.

Kagome took a sip of her tea. Still conflicted. She would have to just see. It was just lunch.

As dinner was finished cooking. Kagome helped set the dinner. As her family sat down at the table. her feet tucked underneath her.

She started to finally start to become curious.

"Wonder what Saturday will bring."
