El had woken up to the smell of eggos, her favorite smell. She was beginning to adjust to her new life at the Wheeler household. She ended up taking Mike's room and he moved into the basement. As El was walking down the stairs, she ran into Nancy. "Hey El, how'd you sleep?" she asked. "Good," El replied with a smile. She had been having less nightmares ever since she'd come to live with her new family. Mike was right, Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler were like her new parents, Nancy and Holly were her sisters now, but Mike...El wasn't sure what Mike was to her, but he definitely wasn't like her brother.
El sat down at the table and enjoyed her breakfast which consisted of eggos and bacon. The Wheeler family sat around the table, along with Dustin, Lucas, and Will after an all night campaign of D&D. While they were eating, Nancy spoke out, "Hey mom, can I go to the mall today?" El sat there and wondered what a mall was while Mrs. Wheeler replied, "Sure honey, why don't you take El with you?" Nancy nodded, "Hey El, want to go shopping today?" El smiled and nodded her head in excitement; she might not have known what a mall was, but it sure sounded like fun.
"Hey El! I found a few outfits for you to try on!" Nancy called as she pulled out what looked like dozens of outfits. El was in the changing room for what seemed like countless hours trying on everything while Nancy judged each and every outfit very carefully, analyzing and finding El's perfect look. The first couple outfits were okay, but Nancy complained that they could be better. Just when it seemed like El had tried on every possible outfit combination, Nancy came back with a baby-blue collared blouse and a denim skirt. El tried it on and stepped out nervously and asked, "Pretty?" "You look amazing, Mike is going to love it!" Nancy replied. El wasn't sure what Mike had to do with her outfit, but she just smiled.
Next they went to the drugstore to buy some makeup because Nancy said she wanted to give El a "new look." Nancy was explaining all the different makeup products to El as they walked up and down the many isles of makeup. It was all very confusing to El, but she tried her best to pay attention. She was most excited to try on mascara because Nancy had explained that it would make her eyelashes pop, which sounded exciting.
When they got home, Nancy rushed El up the stairs. She didn't want Mike to know what she was doing. As Mike's sister, Nancy was pretty good at reading his emotions and Nancy knew for a fact that Mike was crushing on El.
The first thing Nancy did was pat this stuff called foundation all over El's face, and then she did something called "setting it" with a powder. Next she applied a light peach eyeshadow and mascara, which for the record wasn't as exciting as El thought it was going to be. Nancy then brushed on pale pink blush and for the final touch she put on a glossy pink lipstick. Then El changed into her new outfit along with a new pair of white high tops.
She waked out of Nancy's room where Nancy and Mike were standing. "You look amazing!" Nancy squealed. The only word Mike could manage to get out was, "Wow." El smiled - she felt pretty.
That night, as Nancy instructed her to do, El took off her makeup. She stared at the mirror. No longer did she feel pretty. She walked out of the bathroom and bumped into Mike. She had tears in her eyes. "What's wrong El?" Mike asked in a concerned tone. "Mike," El replied, "Am I pretty?" "Of course!" Mike practically yelled. "Even without makeup?" El asked. "You look pretty in makeup," Mike started, "but you look beautiful all the time, even without it." Mike leaned over and kissed El on the cheek and walked downstairs to the basement. El walked back to her room and fell asleep, and she didn't have a single nightmare that night.
