Chapter 6: Thunder Rolling in the Deep
Hours passed like minutes between miscellaneous talks and moments of serene silence. Broken only once by a frantic call from her colleagues, screams still ringing in her ears as they reported all their research materials and tools had been seized by the government. Of which could have resulted in a car crash in the middle of nowhere had Thor not taken the stray steering wheel with lightening fast reflexes.
It had taken a few moments for the Scientist to calm down before the startled Thor allowed Kagome to re-take the wheel and continue on their way.
And adding to Kagome's growing concern, night time quickly fell over them as they reached their destination.
Though the darkness provided an invaluable disguise, it always presented an opportunity of the unknown.
Better to be safe than sorry, Kagome rolled the car into a stop at the base of a hill, an artificial glow lining the hill before them. The Priestess and God quickly made way to the top of the hill, bodies flat on the dirt as they surveyed the operation before them.
"That, is definitely not a satellite crash," Kagome blanched, eyeing the soldiers patrolling the grounds, "That is way too much firepower and they would have hauled the wreckage away by now. They wouldn't build an entire operating base around it."
The two shared a grim look, though Thor's expression lightened as he took in her concerned stare.
"Something powerful is down there, isn't it?" She asked, almost dreading the answer.
An almost proud look overcame his face, eliciting a blush from the Priestess.
"Can you sense it?"
"I wouldn't be able to miss that even in my sleep," she confirmed as she turned back towards the mini-city, wishing the cold desert air would cool her burning cheeks faster. She quickly brought up her pair of binoculars, taking a closer look at the fence and entrances. They needed to know if there were any vulnerable spots to enter through.
"Here, you're going to need this," Thor's voice cut through quietly.
"Hm?" Kagome turned to look at Thor, raising a brow as he quickly took off his jacket and draped it across her shoulders, "Oh..Thank you. But, wh-"
Almost on cue, thunder rolled ominously from above them.
His smile could have rivaled the sun.
"Now, stay here," He leaned forward, his warm breath brushing against her face, "Once I have Mjolnir, I will retrieve your stolen belongings and return to you."
"No. That's a terrible plan, that's not even half a plan," Kagome flatly refused, already moving to stand herself, "I can help you. Do you see what's down there? They may be human but they have guns, smarts and numbers that outweigh your own."
Firm and annoyingly warm hands fell onto her shoulders and easily forced her back down.
"You think you can just grab our stuff and skip right on out?" She whispered loudly enough to be considered a normal voice.
"No," Thor emphasized with a gentle squeeze of his hands, "I'm going to fly out."
Kagome was old enough to know that was a real possibility, so she simply responded with an incredulous expression.
The Priestess's growl of frustration was quickly drowned by the sounds of thunder.
'Men...they're all the same. No matter what era.'
Settling back down, the Priestess huffed and pulled the binoculars back over her eyes, keeping a close eye on her wayward companion. His aura, an easily identifiable blip on her radar. Farther ahead, Thor's Mjolnir radiated a steady but low hum-like rumble, like a sleeping beast that tingled her senses. Watching as Thor got closer to the object, Kagome expected some sort of reaction from the enchanted object. But...
'Didn't he say that it was his?' She quirked a brow as she pointed her vision towards the general area of where the power was coming from, 'Then why isn't it responding?'
Kagome bit her lip and wondered if it was too early to call in the cavalry.
She got her answer relatively quickly.
Kagome could almost laugh at how quickly the alarms began blaring, a few minutes after Thor infiltrated the fence.
She was impressed at how quickly he overpowered the soldier, but rolled her eyes when he left the unconscious man on the floor, out in the open. It was almost hilarious at how easily he could throw his opponents around, a stark difference to when he had been sedated at the hospital. The Priestess could only imagine how much more Thor could do if he was at his full potential.
From just observing, she was able to figure out his tactic as she eyed the chaos before her. Thor was definitely a fighter who relied on direct attacks and a tank-like resolve, he clearly was not meant for sneaking around. Like so many men in her long history, she knew where this was going to lead.
With a sigh, Kagome rolled onto her back and stared at the night sky for a moment before digging her cellphone out from her pocket.
She had a few phone calls to make.
The Priestess was blindsided by what she thought would be the easiest call to make, only to quickly realize it would become the most aggravating.
"No Darcy I won't be going to jail-"
"What about Thor?"
"Thor won't be going to jail."
"That's good, he's too pretty for his own good if you know what I m-"
"-If you just give me what I'm asking for!" Kagome shout-whispered, hand dragging over her face in exasperation, "Can you please just send me it. Time is of the essence, Darcy."
"But why do you need it, can't you just tell me? I'm good at keeping secrets. Where are you anywa-"
"Darcy!"
"Okay. Okay. But you owe me," The intern drawled.
"Fine."
Her phone vibrated against her ear.
"Thanks Darcy-"
"Two! You owe me two things!"
"No."
"What! I-"
Kagome quickly hung up the phone.
"Amaterasu-sama, what have you gotten me into now," She whispered with a groan.
Her phone vibrated in quick succession indicating a series of messages. Kagome quickly downloaded the files before forwarding them off to an unlisted phone number before pulling up a secondary browser app on her phone.
A familiar blue screen began loading but she did not let it finish, quickly selecting the option she needed.
'Enter First Name'
Kagome hummed under her breath as she quickly began filling out the form.
'Thor owes me two things,' She mused.
