I Do Not Own Jurassic Park

It always bothered me that Roland Tembo, from the second movie, only had two bullets for his rifle. For a professional hunter, that seems like a real stupid thing to do, and Roland is probably one of the smarter characters in the movie. This is my way of explaining why he only had two bullets.

"Damn," Roland Tembo muttered as he reached his tent.

The mayhem of a few minutes earlier had died, leaving Roland and the other InGen personnel to salvage what they could from the camp. And while there were many important things that the group needed, Roland had left Ajay to begin an inventory.

Roland needed to pick up more ammunition from his tent.

The small pouch containing extra ammunition for his double-barreled Searcy rifle had snagged on a branch as he and Ajay had jumped out of a tree earlier, to avoid a jeep that had somehow ended up flying into said tree, and had been torn from his belt and lost. Of course he had more rounds in his tent, but his tent had obviously been torn down by the rampaging dinosaurs.

With a sigh, Roland climbed into the mess of canvas and wood that had been his tent. He began digging through the mess, until he found what he was looking for.

Roland's jaw clenched. The box had obviously been smashed, and if the brass wasn't flattened, the lead of the bullets were, a couple were even missing the bullets, probably fired off when the firing pins were stepped on just right by whatever dinosaur had barreled through his tent.

All he had left were the two bullets currently in his rifle.

Roland knew he needed to try and save those two rounds, and trust the others of the group to defend themselves. Most of the InGen personnel carried assault weapons, though a few had shotguns. The only other person carrying a true rifle was Ajay, and that wasn't as powerful as Roland .600 nitro express.

If they encountered a larger dinosaur, like either of the two adult Rex's he and Ajay realized used the nest they'd found, or even a larger herbivore that decided to get aggressive, his rifle was the best hope of bringing it down. Maybe they'd have a tranquilizer gun or two, but tranq's took time to take effect, time that could still see lives lost.

He just hoped that the rest of the group could defend themselves and he wouldn't be forced to use those two rounds unless they were truly needed.

"Roland!"

The big-game hunter turned from his musings over his lack of ammo to look at Ajay.

"Dieter found something you need to see," his friend told him.

Standing from the ruins of his tent, Roland silently followed the other man, over too where the triceratops had been kept. Dieter and Mr. Ludlow were already there. Wordlessly Dieter handed over the lock that had been on the animal's cage.

It had been cut open.

"What does that mean?" Ludlow asked.

"Isn't it obvious?" Roland said, barely containing his anger. "We're not alone on this island," he said, before tossing the lock aside, his eyes already looking for any signs of where the intruders that had endangered every man in this camp had gone.

Humans were much easier to track than animals.
