The Flash: Survival of the Fastest

Chapter 34: Wanted

Savitar's Hideout

October 12 2038

Savitar stood in front the futuristic terminal before activating it.

Good Evening Barry Allen the holographic visage of Gideon spoke.

Savitar grunted at being called Barry Allen by the futuristic AI. It had taken him nearly two months of pain staking work but he managed to create the incredibly useful AI. "Good Evening Gideon."

What can I do for you this evening?

"I need you to tell me everything you have on a Meta-Human named Charlie McGrath."

SearchingSearching There are approximately thirteen hundred references to individuals with the name Charlie McGrath.

Savitar swiped his hand across the projection bringing up a news article that showed Charlie among three other boys and two girls. All six of them were wearing scout uniforms and were sporting small black velvet boxes while their right hands were raised demonstrating the scout sign. Apparently he was an Eagle Scout.

He swiped again to bring up a different article this time it showed Charlie's large grinning face plastered across it. this photo's description detailed that Charlie had punched out a police officer.

"How can he come off as two completely different people?" Savitar wondered aloud sort of hoping that Gideon would give him the answer.

Mr. McGrath has a long history of not submitting to anyone's authority aside from his own. According to historical records he accumulates quite the impressive rap sheet. With his help both the Flash and the Justice League were able to overcome some grave threats in the future. Though there are also quite a few instances where he is in conflict with the Heroes.

Ever since the international Anti Meta-Human/Vigilante Act was passed by the UN hundreds of thousands of individuals immediately found themselves with targets on their backs. Truth was Despite the Governments building Meta-Humans to be a global threat the total population of them was fantastically small. Only about 0.017% of the global population were had abilities and even smaller only about 0.5% of them had fantastical powers like the Flash.

Either way many, many heroes became Government Sanctioned Law Enforcement individuals. It was the only was they could continue to operate with impunity. The instigator of this movement had been none other than Oliver Queen who took this as a deal in opposition to jail time. Over time other Meta-humans or enhanced individuals took positions in the world that would be helpful to mankind, such as law enforcement, search and rescue, medicine or even humble baking.

Savitar and Caitlin had a very close encounter with this law when Samantha was born. Per international law the doctors had to test the newborn baby to see if she had the Meta-Gene. The God of Speed has used his abilities to steal the results of the test and replace them with a fake before anyone could even register that one microsecond had passed.

Savitar sighed heavily at the thought of his lost Family. He wanted it all back, but he couldn't utilize the Speed Force as he once could. If he did, he had no doubts in his mind he'd find himself locked away in the Speed Force Prison for Eternity or perhaps something worse.

Quick glances through everything Gideon had gave Savitar a fairly firm grasp on the kind of person Charlie McGrath is.

"Family?" Savitar asked. When Saviar first located Charlie and attacked him the boy's father intervened. Their bout essentially boiled down to the unstoppable force meets the immovable object.

Son of Jason and Miranda McGrath. No siblings. Mother is a normal human. His Father is a different matter altogether

"Meta?"

Very little is recorded about Jason McGrath. The little I could find indicates that he has an older twin sister. Ambassador Diana Prince. AKA the hero Wonder Woman.

That bit of information caught Savitar by surprise. Wonder Woman had a twin brother, and if her origins were true then that would mean her brother was also a child of Zeus. Even though he claimed to be a god there was no question that he could not compete with actual demigods. But this was supposed to be a world without gods, well, aside from him.

She was one of the few people in the world who was the Registration List, but she also had a high position in the UN as the Ambassador of Themyscira and of Women in General.

"So, he's a Demigod. And this Charlie McGrath is only quarter deity. I'll still kill him. He has to pay for what he did to Caitlin."

My Records Indicate that Charlie McGrath couldn't have possibly been the one to kill Caitlin Snow. Gideon Spoke. He as only seventeen at the time of her murder.

"Pull his registration information Gideon, I need to know exactly what I am dealing with."

I am sorry but there is no such information available The AI said surprising the want-to-be-god.

"He's only seventeen but he isn't on the international registration list?"

No, he is however on The Other List. The Other List as it was more commonly known was a list people were put on by Governments if the individuals were deemed far too dangerous to be integrated into society.

Gideon showed Savitar Charlie's page from The Other List

Name: Charlie McGrath

Status: WANTED

The Wanted List, Once you were on that list there was no taking your name off of it. This completely vindicated Savitar and his Mission. Essentially anyone on this list was wanted by the entire world, sanctioned by the UN and enforced by which ever county the individual was located in.

Charlie McGrath was one of the most wanted people in the world and Savitar would be doing it a favor by killing him.

Central City, Charlie's Apartment

June 3 2044

Caitlin slowly sipped her third glass of water that morning. The baby in her womb was getting restless, which meant she wasn't getting much sleep and it was nearing d-day. She glanced over to the couch where Charlie was splayed out in a rather undignified manner, definitely not how you would see any movie or tv character wake up.

That's when Caitlin allowed her eyes to trail over Charlie's back. Every time she saw him, he wore a long-sleeved shirt of sorts. Plastered across his back was a large tattoo of a smiling white skull with a pair of crossbones behind it. Charlie had tattoos all over his upper body. His right shoulder and upper right arm were covered in a red flame pattern. His left wrist sported a simple X mark though the design of it made it look like a rough bush was used to paint it on. There was also a red spiral tattoo on his left shoulder that snaked towards his torso then around to his back and up towards his neck where it stopped.

Caitlin had never really met anyone with large distinctive tattoos before. Her entire circle of friends was distinctly without tattoos. But there was something hypnotic about Charlie's tattoos, almost like they wanted to tell a story.

Charlie groaned as he rolled over on his couch. "… When's breakfast going to be ready?" he mumbled into his pillow. Caitlin cocked en eyebrow. This was some more new information about Charlie. He was a sleep talker. "Huh…?" Charlie's eyes fluttered open. 'Oh…" He yawned and stretched out as best he could. "Morning Caitlin… How're you feeling?"

"I'm alright." Caitlin winced slightly when she felt the baby kick fairly aggressively inside her.

"The baby's a kicker isn't he?" Charlie was now sitting upright cracking his neck. Caitlin watched as he reached over to the coffee table and grabbed a cord she hadn't noticed before.

"Yes he is." Caitlin rubbed her stomach. "He takes after his father.'

Charlie wore a soft smile before looking away. Now that he was sitting up Caitlin noticed the scar on his chest. She had seen her fair share of gruesome body injuries, mostly from her time in medical school. The scar that took up Charlie's chest had the tell tale signs of a third possibly even a fourth degree burn. The size of the scar also told Caitlin that what ever caused it was certainly a life threatening injury.

"How... how'd you get that scar?" Caitlin asked. Thanks to their speed healing Speedsters never developed scars so seeing Charlie, a speedster, with a scar like that was intriguing.

Charlie finished putting his shirt on. "Ah, well, as you know it's really difficult for a Speedster to develop a scar what with the speed healing and all. I know of only one other speedster who has distinctive scar, he gave me this not long after killing my dad."

"I'm sorry for bringing that up." Caitlin knew how touchy a subject Charlie's dad was.

"It's OK. It's basically just a burn from excess Speed Force energy."

"You could probably get that fixed with skin graft, as a Doctor I could even perform the procedure."

"Thanks Caitlin, but I kind of like it." Charlie notice Caitlin's eyes constantly trailing to his tattoos so he decided to indulge her. "Curious about my Tattoos as well Dr. Snow?"

"Uh, yes… I mean… if you don't mid me asking. Any particular reason behind them?"

Charlie flashed a hint of a smile. "Well, each of them is supposed to tell a story, but believe me they're nothing compared to Maui from that Disney movie Moana."

"You seem to like stories a lot."

"Love them." Charlie said. "Stories are all around us. Everyone has one. It's humanity's way of achieving impossible feats. Whether I'm hearing them or living them. my tattoos are just a way for me to remember."

"Huh, I'm actually surprised that the tattoos stick around." Caitlin sat next to Charlie. Her swollen ankles didn't permit her to stand for too long. "I mean you're a speedster so that means you have accelerated healing so in theory your body would naturally purge the tattoos."

In a crackle of blue lightning Charlie was gone and back with a t-shirt on.

"Probably in normal circumstances the tattoos might have healed, but in all honesty, did you ever test it?" Caitlin shook her head. "I thought as much. You're friends should be here to get you soon."

"What?"

"Well, you gave them that message, and if they're as smart as you believe they'll have decoded it and will be on their way here right now."

Waverider Cockpit

Present Day

"Alright, is everyone Ready?" Sara said as she sat in the Captain's chair. Behind her sat quite the conglomerate of heroes. Heroes like Barry, Cisco and Wally alongside Ronnie, Stein, Jax, Zari, Amaya, Nate, Kara, Mon El, Brainiac 5, Oliver, Laurel, Dawn, Don, Robin and Bobby. Godspeed had been stored in the ship's brig being watched by J'onn the Martian.

-Ready whenever you are Captain- Gideon

"Alright Gideon. Fire up the Engines and set a course for May 2044."

As the time ship sailed through the time stream Dawn West-Allen couldn't help but think back to the final fight with Savitar. Everything always seemed to come back to him, never in a good way.

Central City, S.T.A.R. Labs

May 15 2040

Team Flash had been gathered in the cortex trying to figure out a way to save Iris' life. It was rather odd that after all this time Savitar was once again trying to kill iris, but then again in his own words when he was confronted 'Stick to the classics.'

The entirety of Team Flash was gathered in the cortex, desperate to come up with a plan to thwart Savitar. Barry and Dawn had stumbled upon this day by accident just as Barry had done years ago and ever since they had been trying desperately to change the future.

"Is the Speed Cannon ready?" Barry asked Tracy.

"I think so." The scientist said. "I honestly haven't had the chance to test it, but it should theoretically open a rift into the Speed Force Prison so we can send Savitar back."

Dawn glanced from Barry over to her mom. Iris was uncharacteristically quiet through the whole ordeal. Slowly she looked over to the other person whose life was in danger, Charlie. During her little escapade into the future she had seen Savitar kill not only Iris, but Charlie as well.

Unlike the rest of the team Charlie seemed remarkably calm about his impending death. Truth be told there was an unknowable animosity between Charlie and Savitar. Both were considerably powerful meta-humans, Savitar said they were both gods.

"Charlie?" He glanced over to her. "You OK?"

"Huh, yeah, I'm fine."

"We still have not found a way around the biggest road block to stopping the god of Speed." Harry spoke as he looked over to Barry. By now the team had uncovered that Savitar was an alternate future version of Barry who seemed to know exactly what they were planning to do every time.

It was quite disturbing for Dawn and Don that the man who wanted to murder their mother was none other than a dark twisted version of their dad. How could someone possibly want to murder the love of his life?

"Even though he's me from the future he does not share any of my memories." Barry countered. "We already tested that theory and nothing changed. Savitar wants revenge, and he's lost himself to it. He does not care who gets in his way or how many people he hurts until he accomplishes his goal." The air about the team grew tense as they all knew Charlie was Savitar's true target. Iris was just in the way.

While everyone else bickered about the next course of action Charlie found himself standing side by side with Iris. "You look like you need a reason to get out of here." Charlie held out his hand. "Come on…"

Dawn caught the two of them sneaking out and decided to follow them. They headed up to the roof.

"Thanks Charlie." Iris said

"No problem, you didn't look too comfortable in there."

"Honestly I've never felt comfortable at STAR Labs. Welcome? Yes. Like I belong? No." Iris rubbed her forearms as the brisk spring air brushed past them. "I mean… I'm a reporter and editor for my own newspaper. I'm not a scientist."

"Neither am I." Charlie replied. "I'm not a scientist, or a cop, or a writer. But that's why I leave all that to you guys. I have faith that you'll do whatever I cannot and I'll do whatever you can't."

"Thanks Charlie."

"I'm starting to think 'Thanks Charlie' might be my full name."

"That's a terrible Dad Joke."

"What, you going to start calling me daddy now?"

"Eew! Gross!" Iris recoiled slightly before laughing. Charlie soon joined her in laughter.

Their Laughter was cut short with a rush of wind and a crackle of white lightning. Dawn watched horrified as Charlie was thrown from the roof and the imposing figure of Savitar grabbed Iris.

"MOM! CHARLIE!" Dawn screamed as she burst from her hiding place.

As Savitar made a move to flee Charlie threw his right arm forward. The chain he kept coiled around his wrist shot forward coated with electricity. It wrapped itself around Savitar's waist like a boa constrictor and in the next moment all three of them were gone.

"SAVITAR TOOK MOM!" Dawn cried out as she flashed back into the Cortex

"What?" Barry questioned

"And…" Dawn was out of breath as she felt herself start to hyperventilate. "Charlie's with him…"

The Flash looked completely shocked and heartbroken. They were nowhere near ready for this. But it was now or never he had to save Iris and Charlie. There was no way Barry was going to lose two people he cared about again.

Waverider

When Dawn's mind drifted back to the present she noticed that the Waverider was already in flight through the Time Stream.

They were well on their way to 2044 and the crew was now allowed roam about the ship as Sara put it. Dawn quickly glanced around and noticed Barry was no longer with them, and there was only one place he could be. the Brig.

Waverider Brig

Barry sat in front of Godspeed trying to get through to the son that was in there. Sure he agreed to help them but that didn't mean they could be 100% certain he wouldn't try and pull a fast one over them.

"What can you tell us about Speed Demon?" Barry asked

Godspeed thought for a moment. "Not much, he appeared out of nowhere one day. All us speedsters, no matter how we choose to use it, are chosen by the Speed Force. Speed Demon was not. He took the power. Before all that he was certifiably insane. I saw him beat a man within an inch of his life. "

"A few months ago the Speed Force showed me a vision."

"Really? those are rare. What'd it show you?"

"I saw Caitlin's body, as well as my own and yours." Barry replied. "Speed Demon stood over all of us while holding the Speed Force in chains."

Godspeed was silent for a moment. "Seems like a fairly straight forward vision. Speed Demon will kill all of us then take complete control of the Speed Force."

"How do we stop him?"

"No clue. I came to the past partially to get away from him. I also had an insurance policy to deter him from attacking. Lot of good that did."

"What insurance policy?"

"Doesn't matter. It was a memento from the time he was human, now he's just a beast."

"Ben, you sound like you know him well."

"Well, he was one of the most wanted people in the world. He worked with a team of criminals and monsters." Ben leaned back. "I have my doubts that we'll meet his whole team, which is good. They were low key unbeatable. And based on your vision he only needs to kill Caitlin." Barry looked at Godspeed with a tilted head. "Oh, right, you see from his perspective he's already killed you and he's also killed me."

"When did he kill me?" Barry asked logically. "Every other evil speedster we've come across needed me alive for an extended period of time." Barry was basing this fact on only the Reverse-Flash and Zoom.

"I believe it was was on May 15 2040."

Central City

May 15 2040

As Savitar ran towards the fated place with Iris in his arms he felt a drag behind him as he ran. He glanced over his shoulder to see Charlie flailing through the air as Savitar ran.

Moments later the trio was in the fated place. The park on Infantino Street, the place of Savitar's initial birth.

"So, it has come to this" The God of Speed spoke as he clutched Iris in his grasp.

"Savitar! Let her go!" Charlie called out. "Iris has nothing to do with us!"

Savitar glared at Charlie from beneath his helm. He hated this young man with every fiber of his being. He was going to kill him before he could become the monster that murdered his wife. True Iris didn't have any part in this plot, but killing her might make Barry understand his pain.

"Savitar." Charlie took a deep breath. Similarly to Savitar he also hated the man before him because the murdered his father, and that was something Charlie knew he could never forgive. "You hate me, I get it., but I don't care. This path you walk. You'll never find peace."

"I'm not looking for peace' A blade erupted from Savitar's gauntlet. He noticed the lightning of the flash and the tornado twins out of the corner of his eye. "I want you to understand my pain!"

"I don't give a damn about you pain, or your goals!" Charlie fired back. "You're threatening my friend! As far as I'm concerned that's the only reason I need to kick your ass!" Charlie began to run forward cocking his fist completely telegraphing what he was about to do. Savitar noticed a flicker of flames around the young man's arm which got him curious.

"Too slow." Savitar said simply as he proceeded with his plan.

"NOOOO!" Barry screamed as he watched Savitar move to impale Iris. There was no way, even at his top speed, he was going to make it in time. Not even Charlie would be able to make it.

Suddenly Iris was no longer in the god of speed's grasp which caught him completely off guard. Instead he was holding Charlie whose fist was now engulfed in flames and heading right for Savitar's helm. The god of speed felt pain and intense heat as the young man's fist connected with his face, but he still found the strength to shove his extended blade forward onto Charlie but found heavy resistance. Charlie was holding him back with his free arm.

The young man quickly swung his leg up delivering a swift kick to Savitar's Jaw, forcing the duo apart. Charlie glanced over his shoulder to see Barry and the Tornado Twins embracing Iris in a fierce hug.

"How?" Barry asked aloud as a breach opened near them and Cisco and Ralph jumped out with the Speed Force Cannon.

"I have my own team Flash, and I thought it was high time to get the crew back together." Charlie glanced at a nearby roof before turning back to Savitar who was getting back on his feet. "Let me handle this guy. You get Iris out of here." Charlie audibly cracked his knuckles.

"No, He'll kill you!" Barry argued grabbing Charlie's shoulder.

Charlie shoved Barry's hand off of him. "I won't die." He declared. "You want me come get me!"

"I guess I'll have to deal with you first." Savitar growled.

Thunder rumbled above them and a split moment later a bolt of lightning fell from the heavens leaving Savitar barely any time to avoid it. There was something odd about this lightning bolt, that much was made evident when it curved just before hitting the ground and once more headed right for Savitar.

The sound of rushing water caught Savitar's attention too late as a column of water from the nearby fountain fell on him, even slipping through the tiniest cracks in his armor. Normally getting wet wouldn't be a problem but when a bolt of lightning is following your movements it becomes a really big problem. The God of Speed Bellowed in pain as the lightning touched the smallest portion of water and immediately electrocuted everything that was wet.

Preoccupied with the lightning Savitar didn't notice Charlie lash out with his chain which coiled around Savitar's chest like a possessed metal serpent. Just to the left of the duo there was a flicker and suddenly a young woman roughly the same age as Charlie was standing there with an equally tall staff in her left hand and leaning against a mirror on her right.

"CHARLIE!" The woman called out.

Savitar noticed what was happening almost immediately. In the mirror was none other than Sam Scudder, Mirror Master. A second chain shot from Charlie's free arm and wrapped around Mirror Master's wrist.

"Hey Team Flash!" Charlie called out to the hero. "I'll be right back!" He shared a glance with the red headed woman. "Nat, see you soon."

Team Flash looked confused for a moment then concerned but no one had a chance to retort as Charlie, Savitar and Mirror Master were gone.

"Where… Where'd they go?" Dawn asked.

"The Mirror World." Natalie said gripping her staff. "One of the few places Savitar cannot escape easily."

"What are you-"

The sound of shattered glass filled the nearly silent plaza as Natalie smashed her staff against the mirror.

"NO!" Barry flashed over to the broken glass shards. "What did you do!"

"We made this plan." Natalie replied. Her tone was hiding what she really felt. "You need to have faith in Charlie that he can stop Savitar."

"We could have helped." Cisco argued.

"And what exactly was your plan to stop this?" Natalie was met with silence. Team Flash didn't really have a plan to deal with Savitar other than look at what defeated him initially in the future and copy that. "That's what I thought. It was never just Iris' life on the line. Charlie was at risk as well."

S.T.A.R. Labs Hanger

Present Day

Meanwhile the remaining Heroes watched as the Waverider Disappeared into thin air. They had decided it was best if the team split up. Time Travel was never as cut and dry as it seemed so for safety

"Great," Eddie spoke as he looked to the remaining heroes. "Now what?"

"Now, we wait for them to come back." Diggle said.

That was when Both Joe and Eddie received Police Alerts.

"What's going on Dad?" Iris asked.

Joe read his phone shocked. "Its… it's…insane…"

"There's been a mass escape from Iron Heights…" Eddie whispered.

"Not only that but multiple police officers, and even the mayor have opened fire on civilians…" Joe read horrified. "And the number is continuing to rise…"

Just what the hell was happening in the gem cities.

S.T.A.R. Labs Roof

June 3 2044

Charlie sat atop STAR Labs overlooking Central City. It was one of his favorite spots just to hang out. Him and his friends would actually gather in places like this just to hang out and more or less get up to all kinds of mischief.

"I take it you're ready for the fight of your life."

"Yup. I feel him." Charlie said.

"It's been a few years since you last fought."

"Well, I'm stronger this time." Charlie looked down at the small rock he was clutching in his hand. The Philosopher's Stone... er Fragment.

"The Speed Force already hates us enough." The voice inside his head spoke

"I don't care. I've lived a live of no regrets, but there's no way I'm going to let some dumb cosmic force dictate what we can and cannot do."

"Ha! That's what I like about you Charlie. A man of action who rarely thinks things through. The unwitting hero." Charlie rolled his eyes. That's when he noticed the flash of light in the sky.

The Waverider had arrived.

Charlie flashed a toothy grin and slammed his fists together. "Let's go."
