Of Two Strings

-Chapter 1-

It was a beautiful gathering of several people. The halls were not so full nor so empty that people wandered around without partners. The ambience was lovely, filled with cheery people, ready to enjoy the evening. Wonderful snacks were served along with rich fruity wines from far away that was such a rare treat to the Kennedy's guests tonight.

The halls were all a bustle; they shared Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy's joy of their son at long last home. After he had finished his studies he had gone on a trip with a cousin of theirs in which he explored all the seven seas for many years. So were the adventures that kept him away from home. Now, he was returning, a worldly man, now 35 years old, but still a bachelor and it was no well-kept secret for mothers were eager to have this enviable man as their son in law.

"Hurry up! Come on!" Moira pulled at _ sleeves. "You wouldn't want to miss the gossip," she added with a sarcastic smirk.

"Oh, it's that that has me most eager." Elaine was a woman of good standing, not as exemplar as the Kennedy's were, but well enough that their name was known and respected. It wasn't that that irked Elaine so much but being kept under the light of scrutiny that made her run away from society rather than towards it. Society is often too eager to criticize anyone who stands out and Elaine did. It was the view of the people that prevented her from traveling far from home even though her brother was willing to take care of her and she never quite forgave them all for keeping her in their secluded little town.

"Their son is back," Moira went on, this time with sincerity. "Oh everyone's in love with him. He says he's changed so much, for the good mind you! I mean, aren't you curious of what's become of him?"

"Honestly?" Elaine began, but Moira stopped her.

"Please don't speak like that Elaine, everyone says you'll probably end up marrying him."

"Says who!? Don't I have a say in this?"

"Childhood sweethearts, both from good families, it's only a matter of time, Elaine. And come on you can't say he's not handsome!"

"You haven't even seen him! What if he's become this huge bulking figure.." Moira snorted, quite unladylike.

"Come on!"
