Her subconscious was playing jokes on her. She wanted to be home SO badly. She NEEDED to be home. Ziva recoiled in horror when the man that looked like Tony approached her. "Please, no. Please." Her voice was thick and gravelly. Weak. Broken. The shadow of the man hovered over her. She waited for the inevitable blows, for the pain, for her body to be torn apart from the inside.
It never came.
"Ziva." Tony whispered, crouching down in front of her. He was afraid to touch her. Like a scared puppy, he waited for her to come to him. They didn't have a lot of time, he knew that they would be coming back.
Her eyes opened. They were full of fear and trepidation, but they were open. "Tony?" She whispered.
"We're here, Ziva and we're getting you out."
McGee got to his feet and quickly freed himself of his zipties. There was one small window covered by a dingy dark sheet. Gripping it, he pushed the sheet so it hung out the window. Three short flaps. Three long. Then three short. Distress signal.
"Tony. We cannot get out." Ziva whispered, her voice shaking. "There are too many of them."
Glancing over the top of his wife's head, Tony nodded at McGee and gently used his body to cover Ziva's. McGee joined, the two men's bodies' covering Ziva's. The countdown had already begun. A few seconds later, gunfire filled the air, the screams echoing in their ears. The wall cracked and sunlight streamed in. Two uniformed men entered and stood at attention. Their eyes adjusted slowly and a few seconds later Gibbs walked in, his uniform dusty and dirty, a rifle across his back. "Let's get outta here."
They made it to Incirlik Air Base in Turkey and to the nearest military hospital. Tony and McGee were okay. Dirty, dehydrated, a few bruises and loose teeth, but overall they were fine. Ziva, on the other hand, was not. She was severely dehydrated and malnourished. The torture she had endured was obvious. Broken bones not set, burns in various stages of healing, cuts and bruises. Her thick dark hair was caked in blood that Tony gently picked out while she slept. Tubes were connected to the back of her hand, pumping in fluids, antibiotics and painkillers. Ziva slept on. Tony and McGee dozed restlessly, switching between the two uncomfortable chairs and the equally uncomfortable sofa in the corner. Gibbs stood a silent vigil watching over the three. They had kept Ziva in a drug induced coma, allowing her body time to heal.
A few days later, the doctor lowered her painkillers enough to wake up the dark haired agent. Her eyelashes fluttered softly and a groan slipped from her still cracked lips. All three men huddled around her bed silent and on eggshells as they watched her eyes appear. They waited, breathing held as she peered around the room.
"Hey beautiful." Tony whispered, reaching out and brushing a curl from her face. "Welcome back."
Ziva blinked slowly, her head still swimming with painkillers. The doctor gently pushed between the wall of men.
"I'm sorry, I need to do an examination." The doctor said, her voice soft. She looked between the three men before looking down at Ziva. "I will make sure it is quick." They started to retreat when Ziva's hand shakily reached up and grabbed Tony's.
"Stay." She mouthed silently, her eyes flitting between the doctor and Tony. The doctor frowned, glancing over at Gibbs.
"Husband." He replied gruffly, grabbing McGee by the arm. "We'll go get coffee and be back." Giving Tony a serious look, he looked down at Ziva and gave her a gentle smile. "We'll be back, Ziver." He said softly before pulling the younger agent out behind him.
The doctor nodded and started her examination, starting with her head, gentle hands manipulating the still swollen skin. She moved down, pressing gently on Ziva's collarbones, before keeping moving to her ribs. Ziva's face tensed as she touched a particularly tender spot, Tony squeezing her hand and giving her a supportive smile. After what felt like hours, the doctor stepped back and peeled off her gloves. "Well, things are healing the way they should be. The cast on your foot should be able to come off in about six weeks. I ran your blood tests, and your white cell counts are still on the high side which means you still have an infection." She glanced over at Tony before looking down at Ziva. "And I ran other tests." The doctor said, her voice soft, the words carrying her meaning. Ziva's eyes slipped shut in an attempt to avoid Tony's gaze despite being able to feel his eyes on her. "You're not pregnant, and we ran all of the other pertinent tests. You'll have to keep up with another HIV test in six months, but besides the infection and broken foot, things are looking up. We're going to keep you here for a little while longer to let things finish healing."
Slowly Ziva opened her eyes and gave the doctor a small nod before watching as the woman left the room. She kept her gaze on the wall opposite her until she felt Tony move into her line of vision. "I'm so happy we found you." He said quietly, moving to the side of her bed and gently cupping her cheek. "We need you Ziva, I need you." He ran his thumb over her cheek. "I love you."
"I love you too." She croaked, her voice painful and broken.
She looked incredibly small in the hospital bed. Dr. Jordan Parker sighed and stared down at the young girl. She had determined that Daniela wasn't trying to kill herself, though her emotional pain was real. She had sent the family and neighbours home, keeping the young girl for the required 48 hours in the hospital.
Daniela's eyes fluttered open and she looked over at her therapist. "Are Mummy and Papa home yet?" She asked quietly, curling her body into itself, resting her chin on her fist.
"I'm not sure." Jordan admitted, watching Daniela carefully. "How are you feeling?" They had started a regiment of anti-anxiety and antidepressants with the young girl.
"Okay." Daniela admitted. "Not hungry, not as tired." She shrugged.
"It will take time for things to even out." Jordan explained as she sat closer to the bed.
"I know." The girl sat up and flattened her hair. "And things will get better once Mummy and Papa get back." She rubbed her arms nervously. "They are coming back." She whispered.
Jordan crossed her legs at the ankle and gave the girl a soft smile, pulling out her legal pad and started to take notes. She didn't ask many questions, but gave Daniela a chance to speak, to talk. The words came out in a rush as she picked at her bandages. Jordan just wrote, never interrupting or correcting or questioning, just allowing the little girl to speak what was on her mind. They spoke for a few hours, until visiting hours were open again and people started to fill the small room. First Abby and Jacob came, then Ducky, then Michelle and Lucy. The little girl was rarely alone. Finally Jenny came with their neighbour, Trisha.
"Savta." Daniela said softly, sliding over and pulling the blanket up around her. "Have you heard news? About Papa and Mummy?" She asked, chewing nervously on her lower lip. Her eyes flickered up towards Trisha and her skin reddened. "I..uh...I am sorry Miss Trisha." She whispered. "About…" She looked around. Abby, Jenny, McGee, even Michelle, Lucy and Keith, they were family. The tall blonde gave the girl a smile. "We won't mention it." Turning to Jenny, she gave the former director a gentle smile and pulled the chair out for her. "You two visit, I'll go get some tea. And maybe a chocolate bar?" Daniela gave her a shy smile and nodded.
Jenny watched the girl before choosing her words wisely. "They found Zi - your mom." Jenny said softly. "And everyone is there. But, they're going to take a few days to make sure everything is alright."
Daniela's eyes glazed over with tears and she started to whisper quietly to herself. The words were foreign to Jenny's ears and she watched silently.
