"Feeling better?" Rebecca asked Clementine.
"Y-Yeah. Thanks..." Clementine said.
"Good. I'm sure you two will have a fun sleepover with Sarah." Rebecca said.
"Yeah. Thanks, Rebecca." Danielle said.
"Well... I'll leave you girls to it. Try not to burn the cabin down." Rebecca said with a teasing voice.
Clementine smiled a little while Danielle let out a giggle.
"Don't worry. We won't... Not on purpose at least." Clementine joked.
"Hmm... well that's a step in the right direction." Rebecca said. "It's nice to hear you joking."
"Yeah." Danielle agreed.
Rebecca smiled as she left the room. Clementine smiled toward Danielle and she said, "Thanks again for the help... I feel a little better."
"Of course." Danielle smiled back, "We're friends. You help me all the time."
"Yeah... but I'm supposed to... I'm older so I have to help you." Clementine said. "Plus, you're my friend."
"Older by a year." Danielle reminded. "And yeah, we're friends. So we help each other."
"Yeah..." Clementine muttered.
"Are you sure you're feeling better?" Danielle asked.
Clementine shrugged, "Kind of…"
Clementine stood up and made her way to the window, glancing outside.
"What's wrong?" Danielle asked.
"…It's getting late…" Clementine said.
"It's almost time for the sleepover…" Danielle gave a small smile.
Clementine sighed, looking to her friend. "That's… not what I was thinking about."
"I know… I'm just trying to lighten the mood…" Danielle said.
There was a brief silence before as Clementine returned her gaze back to look out the window.
"What are you thinking about?" Danielle asked the older girl.
"I just keep… wondering if they're okay." Clementine said. "I feel like we- well, I should've done more to help."
"There was nothing we could do. We couldn't put ourselves in danger, Clem." Danielle replied.
"I still could've done something…" Clementine said.
"Like what?"
"I don't know…. Just… damn it…" Clementine turned from the window and took a seat on the bed.
Danielle was a bit surprised by her friend's language. "You know we couldn't do much, Clem. We're just kids."
Clementine sighed. "Part of me wants to go looking for them, but I know it's not safe… Plus I wouldn't want to leave you or Gen alone."
"I wouldn't let you go out there by yourself." Danielle said.
"…Do you trust the grown-ups here?" Clementine suddenly asked.
Danielle wasn't expecting the question. So far, the adults seemed nice, well most of them. "I don't know… Do you?"
"I think so…" Clementine said. "I mean, we don't know them that well yet, but I trust Rebecca."
"If you trust her, I do too."
"I trust her for now… But people change." Clementine said.
"Do you think she'll change?" Danielle asked.
"I don't know… I don't think so…" Clementine said. "I know not everyone's nice, but I just feel comfortable around her."
"…What do you want to do?" Danielle questioned.
"What do you mean?" Clementine asked.
"I mean, should we stay here? Or should we leave?" Danielle asked.
"And go where?" Clementine asked. "It's not like we have anywhere else to go. And who knows if we'll find the others."
"…So you think… they're dead?"
Clementine sent her a look. "I didn't say that. They could be looking for us right now…"
"Do you really believe that?" Danielle asked her.
Clementine simply shrugged.
Danielle frowned at that.
"Even if we go out there, there's no telling if we'll find them, or how long it will take. And there's no way we can take Gen out there. It's too risky." Clementine said. "I'd rather be here with people who can help us. At least until they find us."
"What if they don't?" Danielle asked.
"We'll figure it out." Clementine said. "If they don't, we'll stay here for now. And once the weather's warmer, we'll go."
A small silence fell before Danielle hesitantly spoke again. "What if I don't want to go?"
"We'll do whatever's best for Gen." Clementine simply replied.
"What about what's best for us?" Danielle asked.
"We'll do what's best for you and Gen." Clementine said.
Danielle sighed at that. "I said us. Not me."
"I don't want you to worry about me, Dani… Whatever happens to me happens. I only care what happens to you two." Clementine said.
"That's not a good way to feel." Danielle said.
"Well, it's the way I feel." Clementine mumbled.
"I can't not worry about you, Clem. You're my best friend." Danielle said.
"I don't want you to have to worry."
"Believe me, I can't remember a time where I wasn't worried." Danielle said. "Let's just try to have some fun tonight. We might not stay forever, but at least we can enjoy ourselves while we are here."
"Yeah. You're right." Clementine agreed.
Christa was hesitant when Molly explained that Bill and his people would help them, but the woman knew Omid needed proper treatment, and these strangers obviously had the supplies.
Christa knew immediately that there had to be a catch, these people weren't helping them just because it was a kind gesture or the right thing to do. They clearly wanted something in return.
Molly kept the introductions short and Christa was grateful when they gave some medical supplies. Christa used the supplies they had offered to treat Omid's wound. After she had finished bandaging him, she let him rest.
Bill seemed impressed with her medical skills. "You're a nurse?"
"Something like that." Christa said.
"That's good. We could use someone like you in our community." Bill said.
"What community?" Christa asked.
"I run a community not far from here, but we're out looking for our people. We got split up. One of them happens to be a doctor actually." Bill explained.
"Really? Well…That's unfortunate." Christa said.
"Yeah it is." Bill nodded.
"It's also unfortunate that we don't really do groups." Christa said.
"That's too bad." Bill said. "I was thinking that maybe you guys could stick around, but I guess we'll be parting ways once you uphold your part of the deal."
"What deal?" Christa questioned, sending Bill then Molly a look.
"Your friend here agreed to help me find my people." Bill replied.
It was a simple request, if not for the fact that they had to find kids themselves. Christa could care less about anything but finding Genevieve and the girls.
"She must have forgotten that we have our own people we have to find." Christa gritted out.
"Is that right?" Bill asked.
"You can't go back on your fucking word." Troy hissed.
"Settle down, Troy." Bill said before turning back to Christa. "So you got split up from your people?"
"Yeah. Kids. Including my baby." Christa said.
"Well, don't you think you'd have better look if you stuck with us? We could help you find them." Bill suggested.
Christa didn't know what to think. She didn't know these people and she didn't trust them.
"I would hate for you to go back on your word." Bill turned his attention to Molly, his voice sounding almost threatening. "Especially after we helped you out."
"We'll help you look." Molly said.
Christa shot her a glare.
"But finding our girls is our number one priority right now." Molly said.
"Fair enough." Bill said. "We'll look for them first thing tomorrow morning. You ladies should rest up."
"Tomorrow?" Christa frowned. "Omid needs time to rest. He needs time to recover."
"Well he better recover fast, because we don't have any time to waste." Bill said.
Molly frowned. What had she gotten them into?
Sarah entered the room and she looked to Clementine. "You feeling okay? You didn't seem like yourself down there." Sarah said.
"Yeah." Clementine replied. "It's nothing... Don't worry about."
"Okay... so let's get this sleepover started!" Sarah said with excitement.
"Yeah!" Danielle exclaimed. "What should we do first?"
"Paint each other's nails." Sarah said. She smirked and she said, "Clem, you're first."
"Okay," Clementine nodded.
"Pick a color." Sarah said.
Clementine looked at Sarah's nail polish and she said, "I like the purple and blue." Clementine said.
"Alright!" Sarah beamed, "Here, sit down. And let me see your hands."
Clementine obliged and she sat down on the bed. Sarah took Clementine's hands and examined them.
"Alright," Sarah opened up the nail polish and started to draw the brush across Clementine's nails. "I could make a pattern. Want me to?"
"Um... yes please. I don't know if I can do the same... It's been a while." Clementine said.
"That's okay." Sarah said. "I've been practicing. Rebecca let me paint her nails a few times."
"That's cool... I really like Rebecca. I think she'll be a very good mommy for that baby." Clementine said.
"I think so too." Danielle chimed in.
Sarah nodded, "Yeah. Rebecca's really nice."
"Nick... Not so much." Danielle said.
"He's not always like that." Sarah said, finishing up with Clementine's nails. "Alright, what do you think?"
"It's pretty. You did a good job. Thanks Sarah." Clementine said.
"Yeah... how'd you do that?" Danielle said.
"Like I said, I've been practicing." Sarah shrugged. "Maybe I can teach you."
"Really?" Danielle asked.
"Sure." Sarah smiled. "Anyway, It's your turn."
"Okay... I really like the pink." Danielle said.
"Okay, pink it is." Said Sarah.
Danielle enjoyed having some nail polish on her fingers. "Feels like forever since I did something like this." Danielle said.
"Yeah..." Clementine said. "I'm glad we have some time to relax."
"Okay... now... here's the down side. You may have leave Flopsie alone for a while... otherwise you'll get nail polish on her." Sarah said to Danielle.
"Alright." Danielle nodded. "Flopsie, you have to sit on the bed for little while." The little girl placed her stuffed rabbit on the bed before turning to Sarah.
Sarah smiled. She liked how child-like Danielle was. However, she did wonder how Clementine was so cold.
Clementine watched as Sarah started to paint Danielle's nails. She was fascinated with how the older girl could make it look so pretty.
"We'll have plenty of time for me to teach you how to paint nails." Sarah said.
"Okay." Clementine smiled. "I don't think I'll be as good as you though."
"It just takes practice." Sarah said. "So... what's it like having a baby with you? I didn't get the chance to see Genevieve yet, but I'm sure she's just the cutest."
"It can get noisy." Danielle shrugged. "But she's really cute."
"Gen's really smart..." Clementine said. "She picks things up pretty fast, but she seems to be doing okay without her mom and dad for right now. Probably because Rebecca's constant attention."
"Yeah... how old is she? Is she still just a baby that needs to be held or is she a toddler?" Sarah asked.
"She's eighteen months old." Clementine responded. "She's at that age where she wants to explore around."
"And get into everything." Danielle added.
Sarah giggled. "That's cute. I hope she doesn't get Flopsie." Sarah said.
Danielle gasped, "Don't say that... I won't let her."
Clementine chuckled. "She has her own teddy."
"That's good. I'm pretty sure she would mangle Flopsie... given the chance." Sarah said.
"Stop!" Danielle cried out, eyes wide. "Flopsie knows how to fight back."
"Oh... that's cool." Sarah said. She was just playing along with the child's fantasy. "Does she beat up all of the bad guys out there?"
Danielle smiled, "She would if she could, but she prefers to stay close to me."
"That's cool. You're like her defender." Sarah said.
"I guess I am." Danielle was proud of that.
Sarah finished painting her nails and she said, "All done. Looks good."
"Wow..." Clementine spoke.
"It's really pretty, Sarah." Danielle said. "Too bad Flopsie doesn't have nails."
"Yeah... but you know who does? Nick." Sarah said with a mischievous grin.
Clementine hesitated before speaking. "Nick doesn't seem too... nice."
"Yeah. Let's just leave him alone." Danielle said.
"Don't be scared of Nick. He likes to act tough, but he's not really mean." Sarah said.
"I don't... like yelling." Clementine admit gently. "He's too loud."
"Okay. I'll give you that one." Sarah said.
"Clem should do your nails, Sarah." Danielle said. "She's a really good artist. You should see her draw."
"I can try. Drawing on paper isn't the same as painting nails." Clementine said.
Sarah smiled, "Don't worry. It's pretty easy. I'd love to see you draw though."
Clementine smirked and she said, "Alright. What color did you want?"
"How about red?" Sarah said.
"Okay. I'm going to guess that red's your favorite color." Clementine said as she picked up the red nail polish. She started to create a design on Sarah's nails.
"Yeah." Sarah grinned. "I love red."
Clementine continued her design. "Yeah... your glasses look cool." Clementine said.
"Thanks." Sarah said. "Your hat's cool too."
"Thanks. It was my dad's." Clementine said as she finished painting Sarah's nails. "So, how's that look?"
Sarah examined her hands. "It's nice. You did a great job, Clem."
"Thanks." Clementine said.
"Once our nails dry, will you draw something?" Sarah asked. "I got some paper."
"Yeah... I'll try. It's been a while since I've drawn anything." Clementine said.
"Alright. That's okay." Sarah replied.
Danielle pondered to herself and she said, "Going back to the whole favorite colors conversation... I don't know what my favorite color is. I'd say it's between yellow and pink. I like those colors a lot. How about you, Clem?"
"I love purple. And sky blue." Clementine said.
Sarah laughed. "That's awesome. You were both wearing your favorite colors.
"Yeah." Danielle giggled. "We were. I wonder what Gen's favorite color will be."
"Not sure." Clementine said.
The three girls sat, waiting for their nails to finally dry.
"So, what grade were you in when all of this started?" Sarah asked the two girls.
"I was in second." Danielle said.
"Third." Clementine replied. "I kind of miss school."
"Same here... I didn't care about being bullied all the time, but I certain do miss it. I was in seventh grade." Sarah said.
"Yeah... Some of the older kids weren't really nice..." Clementine said.
"They really weren't. I'd imagine I'd be bullied a lot now because of how short I am." Danielle said.
Sarah offered the girl a smile. "Well, we'd never bully you. So you don't have to worry about that."
"That's good... thanks." Danielle said.
Sarah looked to her nails and she said, "I think they're dry now." She grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil and gave them to Clementine. "You won't mind showing us how you draw?" Sarah asked.
"Sure." Clementine took the paper and pencil. "What should I draw?"
"Anything you want. I just want to see how good you are at drawing." Sarah said.
"Okay." Clementine placed the paper down and started drawing. She drew a few butterflies and flowers.
"Wow... You were right, Danielle. Clem's pretty amazing at drawing." Sarah said.
"Yeah." Danielle smiled. "She's really good."
"I've just had a lot of practice. I used to do nothing but draw when all of this started." Clementine said.
"That's cool." Sarah said. "We should show the others."
"Nah... they won't really care." Clementine said. "Besides, I think a lot of them are asleep now."
"You're right. We can show them in the morning." Sarah said.
Clementine yawned and she said, "Speaking of which... I think I'm going to faint any second now..."
"Oh... But we didn't get to braid each other's hair yet." Sarah said.
Danielle spoke, "To be honest, I'm getting a little tired too."
"Okay." Sarah replied. "You can go to bed if you want to."
Clementine sighed. "Alright. How about I braid your hair, Sarah?" Clementine said.
"Okay," Sarah said.
Clementine started to braid Sarah's hair. Danielle managed to stay awake a bit longer.
Danielle was keeping herself entertained by playing with Flopsie, while Clementine focused of Sarah's hair.
Eventually Clementine finished. "Okay I think that'll do me in for the evening." Clementine said with a yawn.
"Alright," Sarah nodded. "Danielle, want me to braid your hair?"
"Yeah, thanks." Danielle said. She walked over and sat down in front of Sarah.
Sarah started braiding Danielle's hair. "Your hair's pretty."
"Thanks. Clem has wanted me to cut it a couple of times so I can be safer, but I've never done it." Danielle said.
By this point, Clementine had fallen asleep.
"If my hair was this long, I wouldn't want to cut it either." Sarah said. She glanced over to Clementine. "That was fast. She must have been really tired."
"Yeah, it was a long day for her." Danielle said.
"I'd imagine." Sarah replied.
"So what should we do next?" Danielle asked.
Sarah thought for a moment, "Wanna tell funny stories?"
"Sure." Danielle said with a smile.
"Okay, one time, there was a giant bug in the kitchen, and everyone was freaking out and refusing to go in there. Finally, Rebecca woke up from a nap and asked what all the noise was about. Then she walked into the kitchen and caught the bug and let it outside." Sarah said. "It was pretty funny. Nick was screaming like a girl."
Danielle giggled. "That's funny."
"Do you know any funny stories?" Sarah asked.
"Umm... let me think... Okay, this actually happened to Clem. She told me about it. She won a prank war against her friend when she put a bug on his pillow. Like Nick, he screamed like a little girl." Danielle said.
Sarah laughed. "We should prank someone..." She paused, "Luke! We should prank Luke."
"Wouldn't it be more fun to prank Nick?" Danielle said.
"It would, be you two seemed scared of him." Sarah said.
"Yeah... You do have a point." Danielle said.
"He's not scary, really. Once you get to know him, you'll see." Sarah said.
"I hope so." Danielle said.
"What do you want to do?" Sarah asked, "Are you still tired?"
"Yeah. Sorry Sarah. I guess Clem and I are wiped out." Danielle said.
"I guess it is pretty late." Sarah nodded. "We should get some sleep."
"Yeah. Thanks Sarah. Today was the best day Clem and I have had in a while." Danielle said.
"I'm glad you have a good time." Sarah said. "And it's cool having girls closer to my age around. It can get pretty lonely being the only kid."
"I bet." Danielle said as she squeezed herself between Clementine and Sarah. "Goodnight."
"Night." Sarah called back.
The two girls soon fell asleep.
"What the hell were you thinking?" Christa demanded, struggling to keep her voice low as not to wake anyone.
"That Omid needed help." Molly said. "Christa, it's not that bad."
"We don't know these people. We can't trust them!" Christa hissed.
"They could help us find the girls." Molly said.
"We can find them on our own." Christa argued.
"But they can help us look. As soon as we find them, we'll go our own way." Molly said.
"To Wellington."
Molly nodded. "Sure… To Wellington."
"They… have to be okay… They have to be…" Christa said.
"They are. Clem and Dani are smart. They know how to take care of themselves. And they won't let anything happen to Gen." Molly said.
"Still can't help but be worried." Christa said.
"I know." Molly sighed.
"As soon as Omid's gotten better, I say we leave." Christa said. "Actually, we should leave now. Anything could have happened to those kids, what if-"
"They're fine. We can't panic, it won't help anything…" Molly said.
"Easy for you to say! You're baby's not out there!" Christa snapped.
"I care about those kids just as much as you. You know that." Molly huffed.
Christa didn't respond. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.
"Once Omid's in better shape we can take off on our own, but for now it's best to stick to this group." Molly said.
"Why?"
"Because I don't trust what Bill might do if we don't at least act like we're keeping our side of the deal." Molly said.
"Your deal." Christa reminded.
"A deal I had to make." Molly stated. "Look, let's not talk about this right now. We don't need someone overhearing."
"I don't give a damn who hears." Christa said.
"We need to focus on finding our girls. Which mean we should try to avoid getting ourselves into any unnecessary trouble." Molly said.
Christa opened her mouth to retort but didn't get the chance.
The two flinched as Omid gave a groan, "Christa?" Omid blinked, a look of confusion and surprise on his face. "Where are we?"
