Someone was breathing on her neck, and Kagome spun around.
Yet the boy at the desk behind her was simply staring at her butt like he usually did.
The teacher cleared her throat.
Kagome hunched her shoulders, and turned back around, not noticing when the boy behind her lurched forward, like he had been hit on the head.
That night, after taking a bath and changing into pajamas, Kagome slid into bed.
It wasn't until she turned off her lamp that she felt the presence beside her. She turned the lamp on. The warmth stayed, yet no one was there.
Kagome paled, and turned her back to the warmth, her heart in her throat.
She was about to jump into The Well when she felt breath on the back of her neck again.
She gasped and stumbled, and would have fallen and hit her head if someone hadn't grabbed the back of her shirt.
The thing was, no one was there. Kagome, being the polite person she was, whispered a trembling thank you. She then jumped in, and someone smiled a smile that no one could see.
Inuyasha laughed it off.
Sango made a face and asked if she had gotten enough sleep.
Miroku made a comment about her feeling ill.
Shippo felt her forehead.
Only Kirara seemed to see something.
At that very moment, the little demon was looking at nothing, and purring.
Kagome was smart. If this...this ghost could grab her shirt and keep her from falling, surely they could hold a pen?
She left her notebook and pen by her backpack with a message.
Who are you?
And when she returned, they had answered.
They call me the Inu no Taishō
She stared at the paper for a long, long time. Finally, to seemingly no one, she remarked, "You have nice handwriting."
She could have sworn she heard a laugh.
Kagome, with her tender heart, couldn't simply ignore him. She wrote to him in her notebook, even if it was only about trivial things. And he always answered.
Kagome, found that tender heart aching for this person, this demon, who was so kind to her. One day, she wrote her feelings down. And when she woke up, she saw four words.
I love you too
Kagome simply cried. Well, she usually cried, but now, she had a good reason. She had finally found someone who returned her feelings wholeheartedly, and he was dead.
They couldn't even embrace.
Kagome was leaning against a tree, ignoring the confused glances of her friends, when she felt someone sit down next to her. She looked up, and saw no one. She smiled.
Kagome found out why he was there. It was raining, and it was hard to see, and Kagome slipped and fell into a river.
She could swim. But the water was too wild, and was about to drown when a hand grabbed her arm and pulled her to shore.
She coughed water up, and then looked up. She didn't know what the Inu no Taishō looked like, but in that moment, she loved him anyway.
"I have saved your life," a booming voice said. "I must pass on."
Kagome felt water trickle down her face, and she knew it wasn't the rain.
"I know," she whispered, the leaned forward, and kissed the air. Invisible lips met hers. She sat like that, until those lips disappeared, and she fell forward, and wailed.
Sometimes, she would feel some breath on her cheek, or someone whisper in her ear, and Kagome would cry. But every time she would dream, Kagome would hear his voice.
And for now...that was enough.
It had to be.
