Note: This is indeed after "Trouble in Tokyo."
A/N: This is my first Teen Titans fic. I'm starting to come up with ideas for stories within this fandom, but I want to keep my first attempts small, so no multi-chapter fics just yet. I need to find my footing. I hope you enjoy this one-shot, though. There will be more coming!
Upon changing into her favorite nightgown, Starfire floated to her bed, seeking a good night's rest. After all, it had been a long and victorious day—especially because she and the Titans apprehended a handful of thieves at the Jump City Bank.
She tried to make herself as comfortable as possible—adjusting her pillows and cozying under her blanket—but something felt rather… incomplete. She was missing something. Maybe someone.
Her mind drifted to the one name she loved the most: Robin.
Tonight shaped up to be one of those nights, a night that would be better spent cuddling in his bed than lying restless in her own. Plus, she figured he needed company. He seemed quite fixated on a news story earlier, one that mentioned Gotham City.
Rising up from her bed, she figured staying with him would be in her best interest.
She drifted out of her room and into the hallway, making her way to Robin's door.
Her knuckles rapped lightly against it, accompanied by a faint, "Robin, I wish to see you if you do not mind."
He quickly greeted her and said, "Hey, Star. Come on in."
The door shut behind her as she floated in. She tried to mask her unease with a warm and inviting smile, drinking in this moment of peace with him.
He softly grinned at her before asking, "What's on your mind?"
She should have known better than to put up a facade with him. He always saw right through her. "I could not go to sleep. Even with our victory today, I saw how troubled you looked earlier and could not turn the thought away."
He caressed her cheek, causing her to smile (and tempting her to soar high above him). "Thanks for the concern, Star."
"So, is everything the OK with Gotham?" she asked, her expression filled with unease once more.
"Yeah, everything's fine with Gotham—at least for now. The Joker tried to set off bombs across the city, but, as to be expected, Batman thwarted it." He soon turned to his wall of headlines.
She noticed that he never elaborated much on his k'norfka, this father figure of his. She knew that Robin used to be Batman's protege and she knew they parted ways, but she always wondered what else there was between them. Robin had always been a guy of mystery and intrigue, but she longed to understand him better, especially now as his girlfriend.
"That is good to hear," she replied. "And Batman? He is doing well?"
"Presumably." His attention shifted from his wall of photographs and newspaper clippings to Starfire floating beside him. "Sorry to keep you floating there, Star. How about we talk in bed, instead?"
"That would be terrific. Perhaps we can do the making out."
He played coy, but she could sense his excitement as she guided him to his bed.
They soon cozied against each other under the sheets, embracing and kissing one another, with Starfire's inquiries burning at the forefront of her mind. She wanted to hear Robin's tales about his days in Gotham—what it was like, how he and Batman worked together, whether he would one day go back. She didn't want to crush the moment with inquiries of why they fell apart, however; she knew how Robin could be when he brooded.
She parted from his lips and ran a hand through his hair. Gazing at his mask as if she could see his eyes through it, she asked, "Robin, what is Gotham City like? Is it as fascinating as I heard it is?"
"It sure is something. Fascinating is one way to describe it. It's also hyperactive, crime-heavy, and corrupt. But I guess things are getting slightly better. Today's one of the first national news stories I've heard about it in a month or so."
"So the hyperactivity in Gotham is what drove you to Jump City?"
"Kind of… It's a long story."
Star traced his jawline with her finger. "I would be most glad to hear it someday."
He cracked a smile. "So, anything else you'd like to know?"
"Will I ever get to visit Gotham with you?"
He took a bated breath before speaking. "Eventually. I've thought about taking you before, but the right time has never sprung up."
That answer did not faze her. At least it was on his mind. "That is most understandable… If we do visit someday, do you believe that k'norfka Batman would appreciate me?"
To put her at ease, he said, "Trust me, Star—if he sees you the way I do, he'll love you. Well, he'll love you in his own way, of course. Batman has a strange heart." He chuckled behind that last statement.
"And you have a most passionate heart." She pulled him into a deep kiss, parting moments later, leaving another one on his jawline.
"Whoa, where did that come from?" he asked, taken aback.
She flinched; it was not her intent to startle him. "My apologies. I was so caught up in our little heart-to-heart that I—"
"Star, it's fine. It just took my breath away, that's all." Once he saw that she calmed down, he added, "Besides, I wouldn't mind being kissed like that more often."
"Then I believe there is more where that came from," she said, a giggle following. She pressed her lips against his briefly. "X'hal, you truly are my rakkaan'i."
"Rakkaan'i?" he repeated. "Don't think I'm familiar with this term."
Her cheeks flushed. "Rakkaan'i means cherished one in Tamaranean. Because we do not express love in our culture, this word is the closest to true love in English."
"In that case, you're my rakkaan'i too." Even through his ever-present mask, he gazed into her emerald eyes. "I love you, Star."
"And I love you, Robin." She sighed. "I just long to see the world you inhabited before Jump City."
"I'll show you eventually." And he meant it. He just hoped she wouldn't see too many of the broken parts.
Updated on 5/30/2016: I changed the meaning of rakkaan'i to better suit my ever-changing perception of Tamaranean culture. Other than that, everything else is how I originally wrote it. I generally lift Tamaranean words from Finnish (or other Scandinavian languages, depending).
