Luka has never thought much about children other than 'exceptionally small humans'. However, Yuki likes children a lot, and spends what time he can with the children at Asahi Orphanage. Right now, Yuki is playing tag with three of the children while the remaining two are climbing all over Luka. While he's indifferent to children, they seem to like him quite a bit.
"Ah! Luka-san, you have such long nails!" one of the little girls says.
"We should paint them!" the other says. The first smiles big and claps her hands, apparently very excited at the prospect.
"Can we, Luka-san?"
"Sure." He really doesn't care if his nails are painted or not. So he watches Yuki and the two little girls in turns, unable to decide which is more interesting. Yuki… he always loves watching Yuki. But the girls have commandeered his hands and are trying so hard with their clumsy little fingers to put pink paint on his long, sharp nails. It is, he has to admit, adorable. As uncoordinated as they are, they do a fair job of it. A bit messy, but they've completely covered each nail. When they're done, they show him how to wave his hands around to help speed up the drying process. He's not sure how much it actually helps.
"I want to go next!" The first girl announces, and Luka is roped into doing the painting this time. As he very carefully dabs paint onto the tiny little nails, he has to admit that it's a lot harder than it looks. Soon, the first girl is done, and the second one climbs into his lap for her turn. At this point, Yuki and the other three children come over to see what Luka is doing.
"You're really good at that, Luka!" Yuki says. "I could never get the hang of nail polish."
"...I suppose so," Luka replies. It's true that he gets better at this the more he does it.
The two girls that were playing with Yuki decide they want their nails painted too, so before Luka knows it, he's surrounded by children and bottles of polish. Yuki and the only boy are sitting nearby playing with toy cars. The air is filled with laughter and the excited voices of children, and Luka is content. They'd never done anything like this in Yuki's past life. She was always locked away for her safety, hardly ever allowed out. As much as Luka misses her and the time they spent together then, he thinks he might like this better.
A/N: I never thought I'd write uraboku fic, but here we are. None of the children in the orphanage seemed to have official canon names, and I don't know if Luka would care enough to notice them anyway.
