"This tie looks stupid with a suit, Jude" Nick yanks at the knot in the tie. Each time he does, he feels like he's suffocating. He glares down at the, what he calls, too black tuxedo and the way it all looks on him makes him feel even more distraught about the night. But she gently touches his hand forcing him to gaze into perfectly purple eyes of hers.
"You look amazing. I swear," she fixes the tie, somehow making him feel like he can breathe again, "Let's go. Mom and Dad are waiting."
The room stayed silent for the first few minutes of dinner. Nick carefully stole glances toward Judy. Begging with his eyes for her to say something. And when she finally does, he let's out a sigh.
"Mom, Dad," simultaneously they look to her. Bright smiles plastered onto their lips that remind him of the first time he met Judy. He couldn't stop his own smile even if he wanted to, "Nick and I have been partners for a while now. Did I tell you that?"
Mr. Hopps is the first of the two to finally look his way. No anger in his expression like he imagined. Just a content look. Better than nothing. Judy and Mrs. Hopps both stare him down waiting for something.
"Only about a hundred times," she laughs and it almost sounds like Judy's, who's now looking away from everyone with hints of red all over her cheeks, "She could talk about you for hours."
The comment obviously embarrassed Judy yet made him feel somewhat calmer about the night. The way she described them, sweet and simple country people, wasn't scary at all, so why was he feeling so nervous?
He moves up and the feel of the box in his pocket makes him remember. That's right… Now or never. He chugs down the remaining water in his glass and keeps his eyes to her who suddenly shoots him a bright smile, "Judy?"
It's rare that he says her name. It's usually Carrots, Jude, or Hopps. Only when something serious is happening does he say Judy, "Yes?"
Instead of responding, he pushes out of his chair, careful not to trip, and bends down to one knee in front of her. By the way her eyes widen, God they're beautiful, he knows the answer already, "You are the strangest girl I've ever met. You know that, right? Strange and weird and the most perfect person. You… you just surprise me each day. Whether we're on duty or just hanging around the apartment. It's never dull and I want that for the rest of my life. So, Judy Hopps, " he pops the box open revealing a diamond ring that sparkles almost as much as her eyes do, "Will you marry me?"
Her first reaction is to see the reactions from her parents. Neither were expecting this, but they still seemed happy the way they smiled. She looks back to him, to his bright eyes, to his pouted out lips, and finally to the way he clenches his chest. Like he always does when he's afraid.
"Nick, of course I will,"she grabs his hand while bringing their lips together, "I love you."
"I love you, too."
"Mom, Dad, I know you weren't expecting this-"
"Oh, shush," Mrs. Hopps wipes the tears from her eyes, "This was a wonderful dinner."
"It's about time you found someone who makes you happy."
