Previously, in "Like I'm Saying Goodbye", Jamie's new neighbor signs up to help with the case involving Jackie Curatola & Josie Grace Reagan's disappearances.
Chapter Three
"I've lost a lot of partners for a lot of different reasons, Jack." Thick emotion and sincerity hid themselves very well in the tone Danny spoke in, making Jackie's breath hitch; her own emotions bubbling up to the surface. Making it impossible to hold the tears back. Jackie goes to move herself closer to let her lips brush across his own. Danny returns the kiss for a few minutes – their breaths heated & mingling – before pulling away to rest his forehead against hers. "I love you."
"I love you too, Danny Reagan," Jackie whispers.
The deep struggle to hold his emotions in check made the other Regan family members grow concerned about Danny but the truth was, none of them could say anything that would make him feel better. One moment in particular found the detective sitting in his father's recliner at the Reagan home; gaze staring off into the distance as if he had something on his mind but no one dare moved to disturb him out of his deep, heavy thoughts. Jamie, however, needed his brother's opinion so he approaches him slowly; sitting on the ottoman not far from the recliner. "Danny?"
"What is it, Jamie?" Danny mumbles, the half-empty glass of scotch in one hand.
"I want to help Danny, tell me how I can help you," Jamie said looking at his brother.
"Why didn't she tell me that she was pregnant Jamie? Why wouldn't she want me to know that it might be my kid?" Danny asks as if he hadn't heard what his younger brother had asked him.
"I don't know Danny, but we will find them, both of them. I promise. Then you can ask her. Let's go eat, Grandpa has dinner ready," Jamie says standing up.
"I'm not hungry, you go ahead," Danny says shaking his head.
"Danny, you have to eat something. I know it's hard, but you're no good to Jackie or her daughter if you make yourself sick," Jamie argues.
"Maybe I'll have a little something," Danny replies standing to his feet.
"Good, now tell me how I can help with the case," Jamie says.
"Can you see if there is a paper trail? I mean it is a kidnapping case, so maybe someone set it up?" Danny wonders giving his brother a job that wouldn't involve a whole lot of danger and maybe give them a lead at the same time. "I heard that Baez asked one of her friends on the DA's squad to work on the case too, is this guy any good?" Danny's asks as Erin walks into the room.
"She is, Danny. I know Alex and we have worked together before. She is a mom too, so she will do everything that she can," Erin assures him.
"I'm working with her Danny, I will make sure that she does. If there's a trail to follow, we will find it," Jamie replies.
Danny nods his head and the three of them walk to the dining room for dinner.
The following morning, Jamie walks across the hall to Alex's apartment and knocks on the door. He smiles when her daughter answers the door.
"Hi Officer Reagan," Megan says as Alex appears behind her.
"Hey Little Bit, I need to talk to your mom for a minute," Jamie says looking down at the little girl.
"Make sure that you have everything and grab your lunch, Cutie; Aunt Kimmy will be here in a few minutes to take you to school. Jamie, why don't you come inside?" Alex asks in reply and moves aside for her daughter to get by.
"I can see that you're busy, why don't I come back later?" Jame asks hesitantly.
"Don't be silly, my sister-in-law is taking the girls to school so that we can get to work, want some coffee?" Alex offers as she opens the door wider.
"Sure, I talked to my brother yesterday, he wants us to see if there is a paper trail, he's thinking that maybe someone was paid to take Jackie and her daughter," Jamie explains as Caitlyn walks in.
"Aunt Alex, did I leave my inhaler in here?" she asks as she looks at her Aunt and Jamie.
"Yes, and you need to put it back in your bag where it belongs, if you have an asthma attack at school and you don't have it, then we will be in a mess. I put a spare in the medicine cabinet," Alex answers looking pointedly at her niece.
"I know, I know, they will have to take me to the hospital like they did the last time. I will keep it in my bag. Can I go to the mall with Taylor after school?" Caitlyn asks.
"Only if you promise that you will go straight there and then go to Uncle Mike's restaurant afterwards, be there by 5:30," Alex says as a blonde pokes her head into the apartment.
"Knock, knock, taxi service is here," she says with giggle.
"Kimmy, come on in. They're almost ready," Alex says, waving her sister-in-law into the apartment. "I want you to meet someone."
Kimmy was intrigued so she did as the other woman had asked, walking into the apartment and over to where Alex was talking to a rather handsome young man. "Who is this fellow, Alex?"
"This is the new partner I've been assigned to work with for a new case," Alex replies. "Kimmy, this is Jamie Reagan."
"Are you Commissioner Frank Reagan's son?" Kimmy asks. "He's a frequent customer at Mike's restaurant."
"Yeah, he's my dad," Jamie replies with a nod.
"My brother and Kim own Russo's on 5th Avenue," Alex explains.
"My dad and sister both love that place, Erin says that it is some of the best food that she's ever had," Jamie says.
"I'll have to tell Mike that, it will make his day," Kim smiles.
"Do you still have contacts from when you were at the firm?" Alex asks getting her sister-in-law's attention.
"Yes, I can talk to someone, why?" Kim asks suspiciously.
"We might need to get ahold of some financials and bank statements for this case and I wanted to see if you still know someone who can help us out with that," Alex explained seeing the look on her face.
"I might know a guy that can help, but it might cost you dinner," Kim replies.
"If it is who I think it is, don't bother. The last time he did me a favor he thought that drinks meant that I was willing to sleep with him for a lead. I don't need the information that badly. Think of someone else," Alex says.
"Okay, no to that one. I do have one other guy I can talk to, if you don't mind a trip to Staten Island," Kim tells her sister-in-law.
"I won't mind. Jamie, feel up for a trip to Staten Island?" Alex asks her new partner.
"Works for me, hopefully this will lead to something," Jamie replies.
"I hope so. Girls, come on, it's time to leave," Alex says as she ushers the girls into the room and over to the door.
"Are you and Officer Jamie gonna catch some bad guys Momma?" Megan asks as her mom kisses her on the forehead.
"We're gonna try Peanut, have a good day at school," Alex replies as she kisses the top of her niece's head as well.
Caitlin allows the gentle & affectionate touch before walking behind Megan and Kim to depart the apartment in order to head out for school. Once they had left, Jamie turns to Alex. "She didn't seem too talkative," he remarks about Caitlin.
"Not sure what it is, but I'm sure it'll pass. It's just one of her many 'phases'," Alex says as she heads to her bedroom to get ready for the day. Selecting a simple but elegant blouse and black slacks, she digs around for a pair of flat shoes; slipping them onto her feet. Returning to the kitchen area of the apartment, she gets the once-over approval from Jamie; grinning broadly. "Do I pass for inspection, Officer Reagan?"
"What? Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to stare. Yeah, you look great," Jamie manages to stammer out.
"Thanks. It's nice to know I clean up good. Let's go," Alex says as she downs the last of her coffee and grabs her car keys.
Jamie rolls his eyes but follows her out the door and down to her car. He notices that she was trying to think of something to say, but didn't quite know how to say it. "What's on your mind?" Jamie asks finally.
"Nothing. Just trying to figure out who would want to take a former NYPD detective and her child, and for what reason," Alex replies.
"Whomever it was must have been able to overpower her, or used her daughter as a way to control her," Jamie reasons.
"Well as a mom, I can say using the little girl would be an effective way to to get her to comply. But she was an NYPD detective, she would be able to fight back. Maybe they were drugged?" Alex wonders.
"That would make sense, it would keep them both in line," Jamie agrees.
"Did you know her? Jackie Curatola?" Alex asked finally.
"I knew her a little, she was partners with my brother Danny for a while. I know you had to have read the file on her so why'd you ask?" he wonders.
"The file just said that she was his partner for a few years, nothing more. I know that for the PC to be involved, there has to be a reason. I mean the PC would care about a former officer sure, especially one who was partnered with his son, but for him to ask the DA to put an investigator on the case? And to have the investigator work with his other son, who only has a few years on the job, there has to be more to the little girl. Is there a chance that your brother is the father?" Alex asks.
"What difference does it make? I mean we still have a kidnapped child and her mother," Jamie shoots back.
"It makes a difference because if he is, there is a chance that the kidnappers could know that, and it could be a possible motive. Anyone who knew that the two of them were partners and were involved at the time could have a reason to abduct Jackie and Josie. This is already an emotional minefield, and it can get worse," Alex replies calmly.
"I don't know if the two of them were ever involved or not, but Danny thinks that there is a chance that he is the father. He is already taking it pretty hard that she didn't tell him about being pregnant when she left, but if anything happens to her or that little girl...I really don't know," Jamie answers looking away from her.
"Well, we will just have to make sure that that doesn't happen then. We're here," Alex says with a determined smile.
Author's Note: And here is another chapter! There will be more flashbacks between Jackie & Danny leading up to Josie's conception, we'll add them in a little at a time.
