"Twins?!" Emerald falls from her mothers' bed.
Lapis and Peridot waited until it was morning to tell their daughter about the news because they arrived late the other night. They agreed to tell her about everything, except the fact that Lapis is going to give her energy to the twins if they don't find another solution.
"Are you okay?" Lapis looks at the kid on the floor.
"Yeah." Emerald starts to tap the floor, looking for her visors.
"Here." Peridot takes the visors from the floor and gives them to her daughter.
"Thank you." The kid places the visors on her face. "So…" She stands up. "That is why mom is feeling so bad lately?"
"Not exactly." Lapis fakes a smile. "Come here." She invites her daughter to sit next to her, what Emerald does as gently as possible for a five year old.
"Remember that accident I had?" Lapis places an arm around her kid in a hug.
"Yes."
"So…" The ocean gem takes a deep breath. "That affected the way your siblings were supposed to grow inside of me." She looks at Emerald. "This is a little bit hard to tell you since you're still young, but you need to know that one of them is in danger."
"What do you mean, mom?" Emerald looks at her mother's belly.
"I mean that your mama and mom are trying to find a way to save both of them because, right now, it is impossible for the two of them to survive." Lapis holds Emerald closer to her while she thinks about her own decisions. Leaving her kid behind wouldn't be easy if she had to do it in the end.
"That is why we were out the whole day yesterday." Peridot looks at the gemling, who is still staring at her mom's belly.
Even though she had a personal conflict about if she wanted a sibling or not, Emerald didn't want them to die. Yes, she was scared that her mothers wouldn't give her attention anymore, but she never wished for that to happen.
Slowly, but with all her good intentions, Emerald places one of her hands on her mother's stomach. The kid is not used to interact with them that much, but she feels like it is the right thing to do now.
"You will be fine." She closes her eyes. "I know it. You two will love things out here. Mom and mama are amazing, you will love to meet them both." Emerald smiles, making her mothers hold their tears really hard. They don't want to cry and make Emerald worry.
"Mama is bossy sometimes and mom worries about a lot of things, but they love us a lot." Emerald places a head on Lapis's belly. "We have grandparents, something unusual for gems nowadays, but that is because we're gemlings and so are our mothers. Once you two get older I'll help you to understand that." She opens her eyes and then looks at Peridot. "Do you think they get what I mean?"
"Well, they are full of surprises, so, I guess they do." Peridot smiles.
"Full of surprises?" Emerald looks at Lapis.
"They used their powers on your mama yesterday." Lapis plays with her daughter's hair.
"They can do that?!" Emerald widens her eyes.
"Yes." Peridot sighs. "We are still trying to figure out what their powers exactly do."
"Is it related to water like ours?" Emerald asks Lapis.
"No." The ocean gem caresses her daughter's hair. "They are mental powers. We are also still figuring out from which side of the family their powers are from. We are between Blue or Pink."
"Your mothers, mom?"
"Yeah." Lapis kisses her kid's head.
"Mama?" Emerald looks at Peridot.
"Yes?"
"White and Yellow have powers, right?"
"Yes, they do. Why?" Peridot raises an eyebrow.
"Why don't you have powers?"
"M-me?" Peridot looks away from her daughter. "Well… you see-"
Suddenly she hears Lapis clearing her throat. "I guess she is old enough to know. I mean, she won't get upset about it."
"Fine." Peridot sighs.
"What is going on?" Emerald raises an eyebrow.
"There is something you don't know about me." Peridot looks at a screwdriver next to her computer. "I didn't want to tell you because I thought you could feel upset about not having this power." Peridot moves her hand and makes the screwdriver float towards the gemling and stop in front of her. "So, I decided to hide it."
"You have metal powers?!" Emerald touches the screwdriver.
"Yes."
"You know how cool that is?!" Emerald shouts and jumps on the bed.
"I wouldn't call it cool, but, I have to admit, it is pretty great." Peridot laughs.
"Isn't there something else you decided to tell her once she found out about your powers?" Lapis raises an eyebrow.
"There is more?!" Emerald looks at Lapis, surprised.
"Sure." Lapis blinks. "You know that our family is full of surprises."
"First of all, you will get really surprised about this. Try not to get too shocked." Peridot looks at her floating fingers. "This can be weird at first." She removes her hand enhancers.
"Oh my-" Emerald sits next to her mom, holding Lapis's arm.
"This is just the beginning." Lapis whispers to her kid.
"This is so not natural." Peridot removes her leg enhancers.
"But this is your natural, Peri." Lapis giggles.
"Does that hurt?" Emerald asks Peridot, really worried about her mama.
"No." The technician removes her last limb enhancer. "Well, this is gonna be shocking." The green gem stands up on the bed really quick.
Slowly, Emerald walks towards her mama, trying to process the information in front of her.
"Mama…"
"I know this is weird." Peridot closes her eyes and sighs.
"You are small!" Emerald jumps on her mother in a hug.
"I'm still taller than you." Peridot places a hand on her daughter's hair.
"You are small!" The kid shouts again.
"I know that." Peridot laughs. "Are you okay with all of it?"
"Of course I am! It's easier to hug you this way mama." Emerald hugs her mother again.
"I see." Peridot hugs her kid back. "But the limb enhancers are useful."
"I agree." Lapis raises a hand. "They saved me a couple of times."
"Do you like to wear them?" Emerald looks at the limb enhancers on the end of the bed.
"I do." Peridot smiles. "They are useful, like I said." She messes up Emerald's hair.
"How did you manage to hide this for so long?" Emerald sits on the bed again.
"I have no idea." Peridot laughs. "I do take my limb enhancers off sometimes, but you are usually not around when I do it. About my power, well, when you were a baby I used to use it to make you stop crying when you were bored." The technician sits as well. "You really liked to see the keys of the house floating around you."
"Really?" Emerald laughs. She does love to hear stories of the time when she was a baby, they always make her feel loved by her mothers.
"There was this time that we fused-" Lapis looks at Peridot.
"You fused?" Emerald interrupts her mom. She does love stories about her, but she never heard anything about her mothers fusing.
"Well, yes?" Lapis looks at her daughter, confused. "Don't you remember?"
"No?" Emerald crawls towards Lapis. "I would certainly remember that."
"Well, we can't show you now that your mom is pregnant, but maybe after that, we can do it."
"Yes. You will love to meet Azurite again." Lapis smiles.
"Will she remember me?" Emerald asks her mothers.
"She is us, so, yes she will." Lapis takes her kid's hand. "She knows what we know and she feels our combined feelings. In other words, she loves you as much as we do. Azurite knows you as much as we do."
"Fusion looks complicated." Emerald looks at her mother's hand.
"Why do you think that?" Peridot crosses her legs.
"Everyone says that you are not one gem, but you are not two gems either, however, putting those things aside, Steven and Garnet say that it is wonderful."
"It can be wonderful, if you find the right person to have this experience with. Ruby and Sapphire, Steven and Connie, your mom and myself, we found the right gem or, in Steven's case, human." Peridot explains to her kid.
"But, sometimes, it can be an unhealthy fusion, like Jasper and myself, for example. We are bad for each other when we are fused as Malachite." Lapis takes a deep breath.
"I see." Emerald rests her head against Lapis's arm.
"Why are you worried about fusion?" Lapis places an arm around Emerald.
"I'm not worried." Emerald sighs. "It's just…" The gemling holds her mom's arm. "Garnet mentioned a fusion training yesterday and I couldn't stop thinking about it."
"Who are you fusing with?" Peridot sits in front of Emerald.
"Topaz." The kid looks away from her mothers.
"You are best friends, so, it should be easy for you two."
"Garnet said the same thing." The gemling closes her eyes, while Lapis and Peridot look at each other.
"Hey." Lapis caresses her daughter's head. "If you don't feel comfortable about fusing, you can always tell us or her. It is supposed to be a good experience for you." She kisses her kid's head.
"Your mom is right. You shouldn't force this kind of thing." Peridot takes her kid's hand. "Never."
"Okay." Emerald smiles and then stares at her mama's hands. "Your hands are tiny. Like mine."
"I always say that." Lapis giggles. "She never listens."
"I do listen." Peridot rolls her eyes. "But, like I said before, I already know that I am small." She laughs.
Suddenly Emerald jumps on her sit. "I have something to do." Emerald stands up. "I see you at lunch."
"What is that all of a sudden?" Lapis raises an eyebrow.
"It is important." Emerald runs towards the door. "I'll be back soon."
"Eme…" Peridot takes a deep breath. "Be careful."
"I will." Emerald runs away from the room, towards the lighthouse park to find the one she is looking for. Of course she would find him there, he told her she would find him there.
"Topaz." The green gemling calls the blue one, who is looking at the ocean from behind the fence.
"You came." He turns his face at her.
"Yes." Emerald looks away from him.
"So, let's do it." He walks towards her.
"Wait!" She shakes her hands in front of her, making him stop. "That is the reason I'm here. I think we shouldn't fuse."
"W-what?" Topaz takes a step back.
"If we fuse, we will get out of control. We can't do it. Not in the way we are right now."
"So, what do you suggest?" Topaz crosses his arms. "We have to do this."
"Have to? You know fusion is not like that."
"Everything would be fine if you didn't start questioning things! We would be fine!" He shouts. "If you just move on about this whole thing."
"They are my family too!" She shouts back.
"Who cares?" Topaz freezes the whole place with a tap of his foot on the ground. "They are our enemies! We have to fight back and, for that, we have to be able to fuse."
"You don't even know them! No one does!"
"Not even you!" Topaz makes fireballs on his hands.
"That is not the point!" Emerald transforms the ice from the floor into a waterball. "I want to meet them, you don't!"
"I've seen them twice and they are bad. Yellow, Blue and White Diamond are the worse gems in the universe."
"Take that back." Emerald steps forward and then attacks Topaz with her waterball.
"No." He evaporates the water with his fireball and then makes another one on his right hand. "Blue Diamond is a shatterer!" He throws the fireball at Emerald, who blocks it with a wall made of water. "White Diamond is a brute." He throws another one, who gets Emerald on her cheek. "And Yellow Diamond, well, I won't even get started on her."
"You-" Emerald jumps on the ground and then looks at the ocean. "You won't talk about my grandparents and get away with it." Emerald makes the water from the ocean go to Topaz's direction, hitting him and making the ground shake.
"Is with that attitude that you want to survive their attack?" He stands up with a lightning ball on his hand.
"I will talk to them and make they understand." Emerald makes a ball made of a white light on her hand. "This is new." She whispers to herself.
"Since when do you have that?"
"Grandparents' gift I guess." She runs towards the other kid, ready to hit him while Topaz also runs towards her.
"You shouldn't trust them!" He shouts. "You have to hate them!"
"Why?!" Emerald jumps to hit the boy, but that is when a pink shield shows up in front of her, making her fly away.
"Let me go, Connie." Topaz tells the woman holding his arm.
"No." Connie makes a serious face.
"C-Connie?" Emerald asks confused while someone catches her before she hits the ground.
"What were you thinking?" Steven looks at Emerald with a serious face.
"Steven?" Emerald jumps on his arms.
"What were you kids doing?" Steven places the gemling on the ground.
"Nothing."
"Tell me then, why were you shouting about the diamonds?" Steven crosses his arms.
"Well…" She looks away from Steven.
"Emerald thinks she can talk with them!" Topaz runs towards Steven. "She thinks they will listen to her just because she is their grandkid."
"Do you?" Steven looks at the green gemling.
"I know what you will say. They are the bad guys and I shouldn't talk to them, but they're my family. I have to try."
"Actually… I was going to say that I think you should try."
"What?!" The gemlings shout together.
"Yes." Steven takes a deep breath. "Look. I do know that they are the Crystal Gems' enemies, but everyone deserves a second chance. That is what I believe." He looks at Connie, making an ask without any words, which Connie agrees.
"You shouldn't fight about things like this. You should talk and not start a battle. What would you do if you had seriously hurt each other?" Connie looks at both kids.
"I'm sorry." Topaz and Emerald look at the ground.
"We will have to tell Peridot, Lapis and Garnet, you know that, right?" Steven looks at them, still with a serious face and crossed arms.
"Yes…" Emerald looks at the ocean.
"Well, Topaz, why don't we go back to the house and talk?" Connie looks at the blue gemling.
"Okay." He walks right next to Connie, following her, while Emerald and Steven stay on the hill.
"What is going on?" Emerald crosses her arms.
"Well…" Steven scratches the back of his head.
"Steven…" She taps her foot on the ground.
"Okay." He sighs. "We should sit."
"Okay."
"So, I have something to tell you, but you have to promise me you won't tell this to your parents or Topaz."
"I promise…"
"I never told your parents because I knew how Lapis used to react when the subject was the diamonds… but now I know that she is the daughter of Blue and Pink Diamond and I think she deserves to know this."
"So… why aren't you telling her?" Emerald makes a confused face.
"Because of her situation. Pearl told me that Lapis can't be in stressful situations, so, for now, I can't tell her what I'm about to tell you."
"So, you're telling me?" She raises an eyebrow.
"I think you deserve to know. The Diamonds… are a complicated subject and you are their grandchild. You are probably confused."
"What do you know that my parents don't, Steven?"
"I know what Pink Diamond did." He looks at Emerald, making her stare at him in silence for a while.
"What do you mean? Are you gonna tell me the horrible things she did to this planet so Rose Quartz had to shatter her?" Emerald crosses her arms. "I don't need more people saying bad things about the diamonds."
"I'm not here to judge the Diamonds… I want to tell you the truth about Pink Diamond and about Rose Quartz."
"The truth?"
"Yes… you know, there are some things that I still don't understand, but I want to tell you what I know."
"Okay." Emerald takes a deep breath.
"So… Mom was a diamond who invaded Earth, saw its beauty and its worth. Mom made an army and she fought herself." Steven sighs. "Did that even end up mattering when she faked her own shattering?" Steven shakes his head, trying to forget about that while he looks at the ocean. "Mom lived in hiding by the name of Rose with the friends she made and the form she chose. Now all that is left of her exists in me and I think that we can all agree that is a little bit upsetting." And then Steven starts to tell Emerald the truth. The fact Pink Diamond and Rose Quartz were the same gem, about the war, about the fake shattering and how the gems reacted when they found out. After he stopps talking, the kid doesn't know how to react.
"We can all rethink how we feel about Rose and when it comes to Pink and the things she did in the past, I suppose." He scratches the back of his head again.
"So…" Emerald holds her legs next to her chest. "You didn't tell my mom because you were afraid she would fly back to the moon?"
"Yeah… she was there because of them… finding out that I have Pink Diamond' s gem could have made her fly away again."
"So… Pink Diamond faked her shattering, left Blue Diamond and my mom when she was a baby, stayed here with Pearl and fell in love with your dad… okay… I have to talk to Pearl later. Maybe if I ask her what happened between them I can understand more of Blue Diamond."
"Remember to keep this a secret from Lapis and Peridot. Topaz also doesn't know because Garnet will tell him."
"Then you are my uncle..."
"Uncle." Steven laughs. "Uncle. Lapis' half-brother."
"Right… Steven." Emerald sighs. "This changes some things. Are you okay with that? I mean… you're the new pink diamond! What will you tell Blue Diamond when you meet her?"
Steven looks at the sky "I don't know. She will probably have a lot of questions that I won't know how to answer. I will try to make her understand." He looks at the kid. "Maybe you can help me."
"I will." Emerald smiles.
"You know, I don't think they are still as bad as they were before. They are hurt because they think Pink is gone, but maybe they are not the tyrants they used to be back at the war. The others are scared because they think the Diamonds won't care about the fact that we're family. I mean, they did try to kill Peridot once and they didn't even care that Lapis was here trapped in a mirror for thousands of years… It's complicated. I want to give them a chance, but the others are ready to fight."
"I know." Emerald looks at her hands. "Thanks for telling me this, uncle Steven." She smiles.
"I'm an uncle." He laughs. "I never thought I would be one. When Lapis told me who she was I almost told her everything, but then Pearl gave me a look, telling me I shouldn't. It is weird, but cool at the same time. I can't wait to be able to tell her."
"I have the best uncle in the world." She stands up in a jump.
"Really?" He laughs.
"Yes! You are the only one who supports my decision."
"About the diamonds?"
"Yes. I will make they understand everything. You will see."
"I believe in you, Emerald. I think you can be the one to bring peace to the whole situation."
"Thanks for trusting me. I won't let you down."
"I know you won't." He places his hand on her hair. "And if you need me, I will be there."
"Thanks." Emerald gives him a genuine smile.
A.n.: Pearl has a lot to tell Emerald, just saying hehe.
I really wanted to use that song. I was planning for Steven to tell Eme and then I was listening to this song, so, things happened.
Things are getting nice. I can't wait fot when the diamonds show up because that is when The Daughter Of a Diamond (which is not completed yet) and The New Gems With a New Life complete each other.
