A/N: Sarah McLachlan this time. Because I heard a live recording of this song yesterday and even with the added, raucous, guitar and drums, the line "I'll take your breath away" still had the power to raise goosebumps on my arms.

=====

Every night, instead of sleeping, Clark flew all over the city, hoping that night's patrol would somehow exorcise the demons inside him. The memories of everyone he'd lost, every failure.

One loss, one failure, more than any of the others, brought him to the LexCorp tower every night just as the bells in the tower of St. Mary's tolled midnight. Fortunately, it was Thursday night, the first of six nights off before Lex's next "date night." Each Wednesday, Lex had a different hooker. They were all tall, leggy brunettes with dark, wavy hair.

Just like Victoria, Desiree and Helen. Damn them all for what they did to Lex -- the hardening of Lex's heart that all of Clark's silent devotion could neither avert nor reverse.

As he did every night, he hovered outside Lex's window as Lex sipped a snifter of brandy and stared into the fire. Right on time, at precisely 12:30, Lex put the snifter down. Clark fully expected him to call Happersen on the intercom to come upstairs to put the fire out. Instead, Lex stood and carried the snifter to the fireplace, where he chucked the glass into the flames.

There must have still been brandy in the glass, because the fire flared up, very nearly reaching Lex. Clark knew that if Lex had been so much as singed, he would have been in there in a moment to put out the fire, and damn the consequences.

The fire receded, leaving Lex unscathed.

Lex still didn't move to the phone. Instead, he walked to the sliding glass door and outside onto the balcony staring into the night beyond.

As if compelled, Clark flew around the far side of the building, landing almost-silently behind Lex on the lightly-graveled path.

"Close your eyes."
