"Wait 2 minutes to read the result. Be sure to read the results before 10 minutes have passed. A blue line will appear in the square window as a control to show that the test has worked. If no blue line appears in the square window within 10 minutes, the test has not worked."

Amy had followed the directions carefully, now she simply had to wait. She stared at the test, as it sat on her bathroom sink, straining to see if the blue plus sign was beginning to show up. Nothing. She reread the directions, to make sure she had done what she was supposed to.

"A blue line will appear in the square window as a control to show that the test has worked." She checked the square window and saw the deep, blue line. It was working. She looked back at the directions, "Wait 2 minutes to read the result." She checked her watch- only 30 seconds had passed. The test still wasn't showing anything and Amy remembered that old saying, "A watched pot never boils".

Looking for a distraction, to pass the time, she went into the living room to try to tidy the place up. She looked around and smiled, imagining a child running around the loft, giggling and playing. She and Ty were looking forward to being parents, and soon she'd know if that dream were coming true. She checked her watch- 45 seconds. She started to pick up some books, that Ty had left on the table, but something grabbed her attention. "Where would we put a baby?" They only had the one bedroom and the whole place seemed much smaller, than it did a moment ago. She began considering possible solutions, but the obvious one was that they would need a bigger place. They would have to move. Amy and Ty had worked so hard on their loft and they loved it, it was perfect, or so they thought. For a moment Amy hoped the test would read negative. If she wasn't pregnant, there would be no hurry to move. "What am I thinking?" she asked herself. What kind of mother would choose a barn loft over her own child? A bad one, to be sure. She didn't even know, yet, if she was pregnant and she was already a bad mother. But maybe she wasn't a mother yet. Maybe the test was negative.

Amy sat down, feeling too weak to stand. What good is the loft if they don't have children? Sure, it was a nice place, but they could make any place their home. It was family that made a place a home and she wanted children to be a part of her family. She pictured Ty holding their baby. She knew how much he wanted to be a father. She looked at her watch, which was harder to read now, because her arm was shaking. 1 minute and 30 seconds. She and Ty would great parents, right? But what if they weren't? What if they're not ready? Is anyone ever ready? Amy wondered if they should wait and enjoy their time together, without children, while they still can. Then again, what if that's not an option anymore? A baby would be a huge change. Amy never handled change too well.

1 minute 55 seconds. Amy, stood up and walked toward the bathroom. Her entire life could be completely different from this moment on and she was no longer sure how she felt about it. Then again, maybe nothing was about to change... and maybe that would be worse. She took hold of the cool, brass knob and tried to turn it. Her sweaty hand slipped, she wiped it on her jeans, then tried again. As she walked into the bathroom she closed her eyes, prolonging the wait. She knew that when she opened them, she would have her answer.

2 minutes ago she was certain she wanted to see that blue plus, but 2 minutes is a long time.
