"To Derek," Jamie raised his beer glass.

"To Derek," Sgt. Renzulli agreed, and clinked his glass with Jamie's.

"So, uh, Jamie. I feel like I should both thank you and reprimand you for helping me out today. I'm glad you were there to back me up, but I know what I did wasn't exactly by the book. If word got out, you'd be gettin' a rip right along with me."

"Yeah, I know. But I wanted to help. Eddie wasn't too happy with me, though."

"Oh geeze, are you in the dog house with your partner because of me?"

Jamie had to laugh but he shook his head no. The past few weeks hadn't exactly been all tea and roses with Eddie. "No. But things have been pretty tense between me and Eddie lately. I don't know why, we usually get along well, but for whatever reason we've been clashing on procedure and judgment calls."

"Really? Never would have guessed. You two have been bringing in a lot of good collars. You guys are the best team I got. So what gives? Spill!"

"Honestly, Sarge? I think it's because she's really good at keeping people in line. Myself included. And I guess I'm not used to her taking the lead on things. I have to constantly remind myself that she's not a rookie anymore. She's not afraid to stand up for herself if she disagrees with my call, and sometimes that just pisses me off. She wanted to turn you in."

"And she would have been right to do so," Renzulli stated.

"I just wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt," Jamie defended.

"Well, Janko's one smart cop, because what I did was wrong. So I decided I'm turning myself in."

Jamie frowned and looked concerned. "Aw Sarge, you don't have to do that. We can keep this between us. Eddie will understand once I tell her the whole story."

"Don't worry, Reagan. I won't drag your name in this. But maybe if Eddie can come with and corroborate me it won't be so bad. You know, since she's really good at keeping people in line and such."

Jamie smiled. "Can't disagree with that."

"Hey, don't be so hard on her. She's good for you. I know what it's like to be your partner. Someone does need to keep you in line, Reagan," Renzulli joked as he punched Jamie in the shoulder.

"Yeah, okay Sarge," Jamie relented sarcastically.

"So maybe you should tell her how much you appreciate her having your back, rather than, you know, get all pissed off at her. Might fix the tension between you twos."

Jamie thought back on his now three-year partnership with Eddie. Having to hide his personal feelings for her was taking its toll on him, and he was still hoping that eventually there would be a time when they could get that out in the open. But for now, their partnership was the most important thing to him in his life, and despite the recent tension and talk of promotions, he didn't want it to end.

"Maybe you're right. She is the best partner I've ever had."

"Hey now, watch it Bub. Remember who you're talkin' to. What am I? Chopped liver?"

"Oh come on, Sarge. You were just my training officer, not my partner. The best training officer I ever had." Jamie said proudly.

"Yeah. I was, wasn't I?" Renzulli laughed. "Well, that's a nice thing to say about Janko. You really should tell her that."

Jamie adamantly shook his head. "And boost her ego? No way!"

"Well then maybe I'll tell her you said it," Renzulli threatened.

"You wouldn't!"

Renzulli just smiled and sipped his beer. "Another round for my Officer, here," he told the bartender.
