When morning broke, Yomi rolled over to look at her phone, which was on silent. She had numerous missed calls, voicemails and text messages. She read a couple of the messages and felt her heat sink. Her adoptive father had been attacked and had perished from his injuries. "No, this... this can't be..." She managed to say in disbelief.

Kagura stirred from her sleep and turned to see Yomi in her state of concern. "Hey, what's going on?"

"I need to go see him."

"Who?"

"My dad. Adoptive dad. He's been killed." Yomi continued, getting out of bed and getting dressed.

Kagura similarly got out of bed and started getting dressed. When they were both ready, they went to leave. Yomi had her phone out and was getting ready to call for a ride, but an agency Hummvee pulled up to take them. The driver wasted no time getting to the scene. Yomi and Kagura ran from the hummvee into the building. All they saw was investigators and medical personnel checking things out. Agency personnel kept Yomi from getting any closer, lest she see the body. She started shaking and went down on her knees, Kagura following her and holding her tightly as the tears started coming. "Really? Am I not supposed to have any family?" She asked weakly.

Kagura buried Yomi's face in her chest, lightly stroking her hair in an attempt to console her.

...

Later in the day, Yomi and Kagura were sitting at agency headquarters, still shook up from Naraku's passing. Yomi's foster uncle called her into his office. He specifically asked that she come in alone. She went in and sat across from him at his desk. "I am deeply saddened by the recent events. However, I must ask you to relinquish Shishiou."

Yomi's heart again sank with the news. "But... But why?" She asked in shock.

"It appears that as per Naraku's will, Mei should be the exorcist." he answered, sliding a copy of his will across the desk to her.

Yomi picked it up and glanced at it, and much to her chagrin, it did in fact say that Mei was to take on the responsibility of family exorcist. As much as it pained her to do so, she handed it over and left the office to meet the loving embrace of Kagura again. She crumpled up the copy of the will and dropped it on the floor. "Wanna go home? I can bet this place doesn't feel very welcoming right now." Kagura offered.

As they were leaving, Noriyuki picked up the will and looked at it. "Yomi, wait. This isn't right."

They stopped and turned to look. "I know it isn't, but the will is plain as day."

"Not just that. I'd know Naraku's handwriting anywhere. This isn't the original." He continued, straightening the paper and showing them. "See this? He never made a stroke that looked like this. My guess is that this has been forged or altered. You may not have noticed because of your distressed state."

Yomi looked at it more clearly and saw that he was right. "Yeah. I see it now. This dot right here shouldn't be here, he would never make that kind of mistake."

"If you'd like, I can maybe begin investigating this more closely. Since I'm no relation, they may not suspect me snooping around quite so much."

"Can you? I really want to find out who's responsible for this."

"Of course. I'll let you know as soon as I find something."

...

The ride home was quiet and uneventful. Yomi was uncharacteristically calm and unmoving the entire time. They went in and sat together on the couch, Kagura holding Yomi close. Kagura kissed her forehead, which made her look up, their eyes meeting. Yomi pulled herself together, wiped her tears and kissed Kagura. She returned the kiss, moving around until she was on top. "Kagura... When we marry, may I take your last name?"

"Yomi Tsuchimiya... I like the sound of that." Kagura answered as she laid down on Yomi and hugged her. "You're gonna make such a sweet wife."

Yomi was stunned when she heard how approving she was for the idea of them getting married. "You really don't mind is getting married?"

"Not at all. I mean, I figured you wanted to go that route when you gave me the necklace. Eternally bonded, remember?"

"Always."

Kagura got off the couch and went to the bedroom, then came back with a blanket. She sat it down next to Yomi, then went into the kitchen. She made hot chocolate and returned, followed by wrapping them up and giving Yomi her chocolate. "How about we sleep here tonight?"

"Wonderful idea. I like being close and cozy like this."

...

When Yomi arrived at the agency the following morning, she found a message for her, taped to her locker. She read it and it appeared to be from Noriyuki. The note mentioned that he would meet her in a secluded location. Yomi was already suspicious, but figured she would check it out regardless. She got on her bike and rode toward the location it listed. She stopped near the location and her phone rang. "Nice of you to come, Yomi." Was heard from the other end.

Yomi looked up to see Mei standing on a hill with Ranguren. Mei ordered Ranguren to roar wave, Yomi drew her blade and cut the blast, parting it to either side. Mei continued her onslaught, chasing Yomi through the woods, only breaking when Ranguren blew a hole in a temple.

Yomi used the opportunity and ducked inside the temple, Mei following. "First tag, now hide and seek?" She asked out loud, spotting something in the dimly lit temple. "Ranguren, take her down!"

Ranguren kept blasting away, Yomi eventually making it close enough to whip her blade around, slicing off Mei's arm at the elbow. Her arm, which still held the blade, flew up to the ceiling, Shishiou sticking into the ceiling. At the same time, Ranguren dispelled. After a moment, Mei's arm regrew. "I'm impressed. I had wondered what that might feel like." Mei said with a smile.

"What have you done?" Yomi asked in shock.

"Embraced the means by which to really live, something I don't expect you to understand. Moralize all you want, the power to do what I want is simply a fact of my existence now. And watching you die is what pleases me most of all."

Mei stopped, but only long enough to begin taking swipes at Yomi. "Your death is my deepest wish."

Mei started more aggressively slashing at her. "Always in my way, at every turn! Oh, how I've resented you! How I've absolutely hated the sight of you! Ever so talented, ever do fawned over, ever so perfect!"

The blows kept coming, Yomi being able to block or dodge them all. "It should've been me, I should've been there once. But no, Uncle had to have such a soft spot for you. What should've been rightfully mine, fell to an outsider. My future gone, my whole life spent in your shadow. For that, I hated him more than I hated even you, which made killing him easy."

After a few more blows, Yomi managed a solid cut across her chest. To her surprise, the gem in her chest glowed and the cut healed instantly. "Sadly,, he didn't beg for his life how I'd hoped. Rather selfish of him, don't you agree? It would've been so much better if he'd have screamed, after all. He did shuffle off his mortal coil in agony, though. Of that, I made sure."

Yomi became enraged upon hearing everything and unleashed a whirlwind of slashes, none of which connected. She finally managed to land a stab, going through her navel and through her back. When Yomi pulled the blade out, Mei's wound healed instantly. Mei too advantage of the situation and swung hard, knocking Yomi off her feet.

"Feels good, doesn't it? Letting the hated take control. It's my turn now." Mei said as she stood over Yomi.

Her celebration was cut short when the gem her chest started pulsing and her injuries returned. "No, not now! Please! You can't! This can't be happening!"

Yomi took advantage herself, kicking her naginata from her hands, followed by tossing her blade and using its chain to bind Mei. She pulled so Mei fell to the ground, then she sat on her chest, catching the naginata as it came down. "Yomi? What's happening? Why are you pointing that at me? No, wait, please! It's not what you think!.

"Shut up." Yomi spat out.

"It's-"

"Don't even try."

"Wait! Yomi!"

"I said SHUT UP!"

Yomi shouted as she plunged the naginata into her chest and killed her.

...

As Yomi walked along the road after finishing Mei, two blades flew from nowhere, almost hitting her. She was able to swat them away rather easily. She looked up and saw a kid. "Who are you? Are you the one that led Mei into darkness?" Yomi inquired of him.

"She led herself. I just pointed her in the right direction. The color of a person's wings is their choice. All I really do is crack open the cocoon."

"With a banestone?"

"Well, yeah. Want one?" He asked as he moved his hair out of the way.

A swarm of the bright blue butterflies flew out as lightning struck. A blizzard of daggers dropped like rain, but in that moment, Yomi remembered Kagura and their promise to each other. In an instant, she moved ever so slightly. Many of the daggers connected, but were mostly grazing her. One of them cut her just to the side of her eye, missing by a fraction of an inch. One of the others hit her in the neck.

...

Kagura ran as fast as she could to get into Yomi's hospital room. She knocked over carts, trash cans and people. She made it to the room, but they wouldn't let her in. "I need to see her! She my fiance!"

"Not now. She's just now out of surgery. Let her rest until morning." The doctor said in an attempt to calm her.

"I just... I just really need to see her. I need to tell her I love her."

"I understand, but she's resting. I can tell you that she will make a full recovery, if that's any help. You can see her in the morning. The anesthesia will have worn off by then."

Kagura paced back and forth in front of her room all night. She kept making the same steps in the same place, which was unusual to the staff. When morning finally came and the doctor returned, he saw her, still pacing. He signaled her to the door and she went in. She stood by her bed and leaned over near her head. "Yomi. I'm so scared right now. I've never seen you like this. I love you."

"She may not be able to speak right now. There was a dagger stuck partially in her neck. It was stopped by this necklace." The doctor told her, holding up Yomi's necklace, which was the other half to her own. "It just barely managed to get through the skin and into her windpipe. Hopefully, she'll be talking as early as tomorrow."

Kagura took her hand, shaking as she kissed it. "You'll be okay. You'll be okay."

...

Kagura fell asleep in her room, but later woke up to find Yomi sitting up, eating. Kagura walked over and started hugging Yomi, who hugged her back. "My goodness, I'm so glad you'll be alright."

Yomi picked up a pen and paper, writing her response. "Maybe we really should leave the agency."

"That was the plan. As soon as you're released, let's go."
