Marvel's Percy Jackson

Volume Three - HYDRA and the Winter Soldiers

Chapter Two - Double Trouble

Percy sat down on a rooftop next to Natasha who was aiming her sniper rifle at agent Sitwell. Suddenly she pulled the rifle back and disassembled it. So Sam had done his job. They waited in silence until suddenly the door flew open and Jasper Sitwell stumbled backwards through it, Cap walking in right after him.

"Tell me about Zola's algorithm," Cap demanded. Sitwell stumbled to his feet and put his glasses back on his face. Percy and Natasha stood up and walked after them.

"Never heard of it," Sitwell said, still backing up.

"What were you doing on the Lemurian Star?" Cap asked.

"I was throwing up," Sitwell said. "I get seasick." Just then he reached the end of the roof and almost fell off. Cap reached forward and grabbed him by the jacket, pulling him up. After a few seconds Sitwell's face gained a smug grin. "Is this little display meant to insinuate that you're going to throw me off the roof? 'Cause it's really not your style, Rogers." Cap stared at him for a couple of seconds until he said,

"You're right." Cap stepped back and smoothed Sitwell's jacket down. "It's not. It is both of theirs, though." Cap stepped away and Sitwell was facing Percy and Natasha.

"Do you wanna?" Percy asked the Russian spy. Instead of an answer Natasha just stepped forward and kicked Sitwell in the chest. He fell screaming to the ground.

"Oh, wait," Natasha suddenly said. "What about that girl from accounting, Laura…"

"Lillian," Cap said. "Lip piercing, right?"

"Yeah, she's cute."

"Yeah. I'm not ready for that."

"Oooh wait, are we trying to find Steve a date?" Percy asked.

"Yeah, trying," Natasha said. "He's not exactly helping."

"I know some great girls, I could introduce you."

"Do they have an extensive criminal record?" Cap asked.

"No of course not! Well, not all of them."

The conversation stopped when they heard Sitwell's screaming get closer. Sam flew up in his Falcon suit and threw the SHIELD agent onto the roof. They started walking toward him and Sitwell, on his knees, started talking.

"Zola's algorithm is a program," he panted. "For choosing Insight's targets."

"What targets?" Cap asked.

"You," Sitwell started. "A TV anchor in Cairo, the Under Secretary of Defence, a high school valedictorian in Iowa City, Bruce Banner, Stephen Strange, anyone who's a threat to HYDRA. Now or in the future."

"The future? How could it know?" Cap asked. Sitwell laughed.

"How could it not? The 21st century is a digital book. Zola taught HYDRA how to read it." When Sitwell saw that his interrogators were not following he elaborated. "Your bank records, medical history, voting patterns, emails, phone calls, your damn SAT scores! Zola's algorithm evaluates people's past to predict their future."

"And what then?" Cap asked. Sitwell was silent, staring at the ground, mortification spreading over his face.

"Oh, my god," he said. "Pierce is going to kill me."

"What then?"

"Then the Insight helicarriers scratch people off the list. A few million at a time."

The car ride to the Triskelion was equal parts tense and annoying. At first there was only silence, with Sam driving and Cap in the front seat. Sitwell was sat in the middle, squished between Natasha and Percy.

"HYDRA doesn't like leaks," Sitwell stated suddenly.

"Then why don't you try sticking a cork in it?" Sam asked.

"Insight's launching in 16 hours," Natasha said. "We're cutting it a little bit close here."

"I know," Steve said. "We'll use him to bypass the DNA scans and access the helicarriers directly."

"What? Are you crazy?" Sitwell shouted. "That is a terrible, terrible idea."

Just as Percy was about to ask Sitwell to politely shut the Hades up there was a thump on the roof of the car. Then a metal arm smashed through the window by Percy's face, grabbed Sitwell and pulled him over Percy and out of the car where he was then thrown on the freeway to be killed by a speeding truck.

Percy spotted a gun in the assailants hand before it disappeared above them. Natasha jumped to the front seat onto Cap to avoid being shot but Percy, not wanting to assault Sam who was driving, pulled himself out of the car and grabbed onto the man trying to kill them.

The Winter Soldier looked at Percy for a split second before he raised the gun to shoot. Percy grabbed the man's hand and twisted. For a moment neither of them could overpower the other but then the Winter Soldier's arm whirred to life and slammed Percy's hand to the roof of the car. Before Percy could react the metal arm smashed into his chest and he was thrown out of the car onto the freeway.

Luckily for him, cars were starting to swerve around Sam's car because of the fighting. Percy's vision was blurred for a few seconds but he could see Sam's car breaking hard and the Winter Soldier flying off it. Then a large SUV crashed into them and the Winter Soldier tore Sam's car apart.

Percy shook his head. He needed to get back in the game. There were HYDRA agents arriving on the scene, guns in hand, ready to fight them. He got up and started running to his friends. The Winter Soldier had picked up a rocket launcher and fired at Cap who managed to brace himself with the shield but was fired off the bridge they were on and through a bus below.

The HYDRA agents had gone past Percy when he lay on the ground and so he came up behind them. He picked up his guns and managed to hit four men before he had to roll behind a car to avoid a volley of bullets.

Percy could see the Winter Soldier and tried to get a shot at him but he jumped off the bridge, heading for another target. Percy jumped out from under the car and shot two men before Sam arrived and shot two more.

"Thanks," Percy said.

"Don't mention it," Sam said.

"Get ready, here come more of them," Percy told Sam. A car filled with HYDRA agents screeched to a halt and more men poured out. One of them pulled a rocket launcher out of the car and fired.

"Holy shit!" Sam shouted as he took to the air. Percy wasn't as lucky as his companion as he didn't have wings, so he made due with jumping as far as he could. The shockwave sent him a few feet further and he slammed into the railing of the bridge. He looked down to the street and saw the Winter Soldier walking and hefting a gun. Where were Steve and Natasha?

Percy looked back and saw that Sam wasn't having a hard time with the lackeys so he did what anyone would have done and jumped off the bridge. Manipulating the moisture in the air let him land softly behind the Winter Soldier.

"Hey, you!" Percy shouted after him. The Winter Soldier turned around to look at the demigod. "Where did you get that arm?" In reply the soldier hefted his gun and opened fire, forcing Percy to dodge behind a car.

"Did it hurt?" he shouted from behind the car. "Getting the new arm stuck on your body?" Percy jumped up over the car and fired both his guns at his opponent who retreated backwards and used his arm as a shield.

"It's kinda annoying how you don't talk at all." Percy dodged to the side to avoid a punch and retaliated with a kick to the Winter Soldier's thigh. "I mean, I suppose it could be worse. You could be like Deadpool." Percy threw a punch but the soldier pushed his arm away and headbutted him in the nose.

"Ow! Shit!" the demigod exclaimed, bringing a hand up to his bleeding nose. "That can't have been comfortable for you."

As usual the Winter Soldier remained silent as he ran at Percy. The son of Poseidon jumped away and rolled up to a knee, pulling out a gun. He emptied his clip into his opponent and estimated that most of them had hit their mark. The Winter Soldier, however, didn't seem to realize that he'd been shot. He just kept on moving towards Percy, body language suggesting that he had anything but a friendly hug in mind.

"You know, I don't think we can be friends," Percy said. "I do admit I've made some exceptions through the years, but mostly I don't make friends with people who headbutt me in the face." With that the demigod pulled out his pen and uncapped it, revealing a glowing bronze sword.

Percy twirled the sword in his hand once, a bloody grin on his face. "Well come on then, let's go."

The Winter Soldier didn't need to be told twice as he ran at Percy, pulling a knife out of his belt. Percy took the first swing, trying to keep the distance but the soldier parried with his metal arm and moved in close with the knife. Percy stepped back and dodged the knife before he stabbed his sword forward, just barely missing his target as the Winter Soldier jumped backwards out of reach.

The two of them circled each other for a short while before an explosion was heard a few hundred feet away from them. Percy paused for just a second and the Winter Soldier pounced, grabbing riptide and wrenching it out of Percy's grasp. Percy stumbled and rolled away quickly when the soldier tried to move in with his knife.

Percy jumped up as fast as he could, landing on the Winter Soldier and wrestling him to the ground. Percy's elbow smashed down on the soldier's face, cracking his goggles. The Winter Soldier pushed Percy away and threw his goggles off. Percy jumped back onto the Winter Soldier and slammed his head down onto the pavement.

The Winter Soldier tried to punch Percy but the demigod pushed his hand away and started wailing on the Winter Soldier. The soldier grabbed a grenade from his belt, pushed the pin out and thrust it at Percy.

"Ah, shit," Percy said. He grabbed the grenade and readied himself to throw it away only for the Winter Soldier to kick him in the stomach, causing him to drop it. "Oh, you son of a…" He turned around, picked the grenade up and lobbed it as far away as he could.

The grenade exploded far too close for Percy's liking and to make matters worse the Winter Soldier was gone when he turned back around. "I hate that guy," he muttered to himself.

"Perseus?" Natasha called. Percy turned around and saw her, Cap and Sam all walking towards him.

"Hey, Nat. Where were you guys?" he asked.

"We were fighting the Winter Soldier," Natasha said. "Turns out he is someone we know. Or someone Cap knows."

"What?" Percy asked. "But I was fighting him right here."

A/N: Alright, I'm ending this chapter right here. It's been way too long and it's way too short but at least it's something, yeah? I've actually been stuck on this chapter for months, writer's block is annoying.

Also, I moved out of my hometown and am living alone for the first time ever and going to uni. I kinda like it but I have no time at all for anything. Which is actually not a big change since I was way too busy back home too.

Anyway, I'll try to mash some words together sooner or later and make some new chapters. I know where I'm going with the story, the problem is just getting there.

'Till next time,

Manimal.
