Chapter 14
Will they catch a break?
"Are you alright there, Fed?" Enrico asks worried over Federico's head.
He opens his eyes only to quickly close them with a groan, "I feel like we went through a building."
"Alas, you are correct. But fear not, Vongola-sama, we made it out of the van safely," responded his Mist guardian.
Gingerly sitting up from what he suspects his brother's coat, he looks around. Federico blinks and stares at the broken glass spread across the wood floors. Their wrecked van seemed to have been thrown through a store's front window. it blocked his view outside that may clue him in to the cause of the crash.
Lancia furrows his brows at him by his side, but helps him up along with Basil and Bianchi to stand up.
"Everyone's alright?" Federico asks as he takes in the room more.
Basil rubs his eyes and nods.
"Worried us for a second there, Decimo," Lancia responds just before he can talk to Basil.
"Rather fortunate that we created a partial Sky shield to lessen a worse scenario when the van began to fail its job at being shot at too many close-range bullets," scoffs Romeo, glaring in disappointment at the mentioned van.
"Shield...?" He remembers seeing his father create one when he was a small child. But he doesn't have all his weathers yet, so how...?
"I helped slightly with the cloud component," Enrico rubs his hands as if in remembrance, "Not eager in doing that again."
"...you have cloud flames?!" Federico shouts only to be muffled by his brother.
"Quiet, you idiot," hissed Enrico, "there is a slight lull in the fighting and they might hear us and they will finish the job."
With his other hand not covering his mouth, Enrico checks his phone, "I still didn't get the signal if our people picked up the missing package that your mist sent during your recovery."
Federico groans and slaps Enrico's hand away. He hissed at his mist, "After this, we really have to make a list of everything you did in my name, Genkishi."
Genkishi pales, "...I had forgotten about that mission."
"Actually that would be on us," Bianchi winced, "We helped set up that mission with him."
Federico throws his hands in the air before wincing. He noticed his gloves were gone.
"I have a back up if you so wish, Decimo-sama," Genkishi takes out another pair from who knows where.
Federico sighs, "Know this, it doesn't save you from our talk later."
As he puts them on he goes on, "That goes for all of you."
He didn't wait to hear their response as he looks around, "Aw man. I can almost see those bills increasing already in my paperwork."
Federico's intuition suddenly woke up, readying himself for any attacks. His eyes catches a slight reflection from the back window of the van. Catching on, his guardians follow his sight and peek over the van, looking something outside of the store.
There was a growing mob, who look slightly demented just beyond the store front.
"Look alive little brother," Enrico casually walks around the wrecked van, silently despite of walking over the broken glass. He pushed through the tenth generation guardians of Vongola.
Before Federico and his guardians could follow, the silence was broken by a mass shooting, trying to cut through their van barrier. They dropped down behind the van's diminishing shield.
For only a slight second Federico worried for Enrico. The older man had been many more gunfights since that day. Yet Federico couldn't forget. Someone gripped his hand and looks down to Basil's pale face. Federico returns the grip and gives a small smile at the worried little rain.
"We should regroup, this is a bad position," Genkishi states as he grips his swords tied to his waist.
Bianchi looks around and points at the back entrance behind the empty counter, "If we quickly get out through there, we can attack from behind."
Federico nods and lead the crawling charge through the store. He pushed overturned tables and chairs back for cover from the increasing rain of bullets.
"To be in such of cowardly position," Genkishi's face turned disgust.
"Aw. At least it can't get worse from here, Eyebrows~" Romeo gleefully pats Genkishi's foot that laid before him.
In that moment, they flatten against the floor when an explosion went off near their lopsided line toward the exit. Immediately after the explosion, they quickly crawled to the door. Then another problem appeared in the form of their exit door being covered with debris from the latest explosion.
Lancia gave out a loud sigh, "You just had to say those dreaded words."
Romeo huffed from in front of the sun, "We wouldn't be in this situation if Boss-man's brother didn't brought us here to clean up this mess. Today was our day off!"
"Stop whining and get to work, lazy heartbreaker," Bianchi hissed.
Federico looked around him in a grim look and catch sight of Basil paling look. As if sensing him, Basil looks up and shakes his head before straightening up his posture.
Federico gave him another small smile and noticed how Genkishi walked closer to the door.
"Allow me, but I will need the assistance of our Sun," Genkishi took out his swords and made a cross with his arms before looking at Lancia, who caught on what he was up to, nodded.
With two of his 4 swords, Genkishi makes an "X" slash at the blocked entrance. Lancia quickly follows up by swinging his weapon ball to hit through the weaken wall of debris.
Federico eyes over the broken glass and curses at the sight at the mafioso catching on where they went. They lost too much time at breaking out. He felt a firm grip on his shoulder. He looks back and sees Romeo smirking.
"They are not the only ones who can show off," the Vongola Lightning guardian takes out a couple of neon green grenades, "This would give us some breathing room."
BOOOM!
With that signal, the Vongola rushed through the smoke and attacked.
Federico was at front and subconsciously raised his hands to shoot his flame needles only to his regret, nothing appeared, not even an ember. Frustrated, he quickly takes out his gun and shoots at the mafioso who were almost at reach distance.
There were some who almost reached him too soon, but Bianchi slammed their faces with a tray full of smoking purple sushi.
Basil looks longing at the tray. Fortunately, Lancia grips boy's shoulder to snap him out of it before the former swings his chained weapon around him.
Somehow Romeo and Genkishi ended close to each other and kept shouting numbers at each taken down mafioso.
Federico blinks at the sight of his guardians fighting in front of him with no hint of flames, but shakes his head.
This is no time for questions and curiosity. This is a time to fight!
He quickly reloads his gun, grateful that his gloves not being an hindrance. He dodges another attack.
"Boss-Man!" Federico catchings a glint of light and dodges the two flying blades.
They catch the chests of 2 mafioso. He rolls from an attack by his side and tried to shot. He heard a muted click for his trouble.
Growling, Federico dives toward the down bodies and snatches the two knives thrown previously from his Lightning. He quickly threw them toward the ones who were going to snipe his Storm. Rushing through a crowd of mafioso, Federico steals a gun after twisting a mafioso's arm from trying to shot his face and another from someone who tried to sneak behind.
A young woman crackles behind him. At this Federico waited no time and shot her, only to hit her shoulder when one of the downed mafioso tripped him up. Frustrated, the woman uses her other arm to lift the damaged one to shot him.
Someone shouted, "Not with that gun!"
Federico wasted no time to question from trying to dodge, only for the bullet pierced and stuck in his leg. He raised his gun once more and with full focus and slight warmth flickering around the barrel of his gun, his shot was true. His leg began to sting and the woman scream as a strange flame exploded. He frown at the slight orange before he saw double.
For a second everything went dark and he went down. He heard screams, then he woke up abruptly, still woozy. There was a slight imbalance, but his focus turned toward his guardians losing it. Reaching in his clothes, he ignored the strange fabric material as he took out a pair of pistols.
He frowns for a second at the strange pistols, almost like seeing two different images overlapping. Then Basil rushed to a crowd of suited mafioso.
As they as if sensing the cutting Rain, the men raised their weapons as the boy threw his Metal Edge.
His intuition went to overdrive and saw enemies from different angles and shot those as well as the first crowd of mafioso he saw.
Two explosions went off and smoke once more covered his sight.
He choked at the sudden influx of foreign flames. His mind and not-mind fought against a overflowing net of slippery fish of different flames that he knows he never own. He knows his own guardians' flames, but he has yet learned to work actively in flames. More so because of his recovering flames. So again, this meant they are from other people, but the question is how is that possible?
So whatever is occurring currently, is definitely not good. He fought to stay standing as he leaned forward, clutching his own-their-her-his chest(s). Squeezing his eyes closed, he focus on controlling his erratic breathing, slowing down his heartbeat to reach for the fluttering and stuttering lick of flame.
They were spread out like candles held in dark memorial. Slowly, they orbit back toward him, ignoring the sudden thumps as the orange flames came together. Some struggled by some outside force, but indigo, blue, green, red, yellow-red flames (and distantly a faint purple?) flared, guiding the stranded orange flames.
An eternity later, like a long dream, he opened his eyes.
Everything clicked.
Warmth filled the cold he had suffered for the past weeks and he grinned when his sky flames, not as strong as his family's, finally returned and unlike last time, were here to stay. He stares around him at the thin shimmering orange surrounding the whole block. Something he never had control before.
"Huh," Romeo looks around, "that's one way for a boost."
Genkishi stares in wonder at the shimmering orange flames around all the enemy mafioso knocked out.
"Indeed, stretching and training does wonders," Lancia gives a small smile, "you just needed a break and the Will. Amazing as always, Decimo."
Federico nods in gratitude, not trusting his voice to not waver. He gasps when he felt a hard slam to his stomach. He looks down, curious why he didn't feel in danger.
Basil was gripping his tightly, shaking.
"I...I feared, Decimo sir would end up like mother," his voice slightly muffled in his torn dress shirt.
This caught everyones attention and join in the hug. For a moment a calm warmth wash over him, making him sleepy, but his rain and the slight shakiness around the flames his still see in his mind's eye.
Only until someone in the group hug twitched did Federico loosen his hold.
"Well there is not much of the day left. Time to go back home," Federico looks over Genkishi. Said Mist's eyes widen before nodding.
After a flicker of mist flames, he returns with a nod, "There will be clean up, after the Varia and your brother finish with loose ends."
Federico stops in mid-stretch, trying to wake himself up, "What? Xanxan? And Enrico?"
He pouts before releasing his jealousy. He is much too tired to feel too long, "At least some bonding will be...*yawn* done."
"If you wish, Decimo-sama, I can have in exception of our group, to not watch you slumber."
Federico waves him off, "No, its fine. I'll wait until we're back at the mansion to rest. Which the same foes to all of you. Unless its an emergency, rest."
He frowns to himself, Today was suppose to be a relaxing day to just bond and not worry about work or missions. Which reminds me...
"We'll have our talk tomorrow. So enjoy the day," he perks up when he hears a familiar sound of CEDEF helicopter.
"Yo! Guess who is dropping in for pick up? And not just one, but 2 helicopters!" Massimo shouted as the two helicopters landed. Then both helicopters lower the setting on the spinning blades for the talking to be still heard.
"You're a lifesaver, Massi," Federico gives his older brother a smile.
"Of course. Have to save my little brother and his court, once in a while," Massimo smirks before rubbing his eyes.
"Much appreciated," Lancia tilts his head forward in gratitude.
"Hmph! Don't let his kindness from the bottom of his heart fool you maggots," Lal pops out from behind Massimo, "We were suppose to back up Iemitsu since he found the package the Varia lost."
"Then Enrico put in they all have the situation under control and told us to go on ahead to pick you up since apparently you might have trouble," Colonello puts in from the co-pilot seat of the other helicopter.
Lal peeks out and whistles, "Guess Enrico has nothing to worry about let alone Vongola."
Massimo turns a hurt look at Federico, "What the heck? You got to impress Lal?!"
Federico,"Improve your work ethic and maybe she'll give you a good job sticker."
Lal sigh, but Federico turns just in time to see Genkishi, Romeo and Bianchi give each other a look.
That doesn't bode well.
As one the trio turn to Federico who definitely did not jump.
"Decimo-sama, we will take the second helicopter and rendezvous at the mansion," Genkishi stated.
"Is that agreeable, Boss-Man?" Romeo puts in. Next to Genkishi, Bianchi looks at him expectedly.
Federico too tired to think too deep sighs, but answered part amused and part confused, "Agreeable."
"We will watch over our sky, faithfully," Lancia nods in too much reverence. Basil was by his side, close enough to feel his nod by his elbow.
Honestly he had this kind of attention for being part of the Vongola famiglia, but this was a bit too much.
(Yet feels the officially returned and still recovering flames return to himself, no longer shimmering on then surroundings.)
"Enrico," Federico stares hard at his older brother. He was napping alone in his room. He made sure Lancia put Basil to bed on the room next over so the boy could sleep. Lancia seemed a little disappointed, but agreed to be with him to keep an eye on Basil.
After what felt he just fell asleep, familiar sky flame that remind him of sudden attacks in the training room poke at his senses. His brother was patiently sitting on a chair dragged from his desk that was on the corner of his room to next to his bed. He mentally groans when he reached over his phone to find he only slept 2 hours.
"Do you know how I get to find out not only the Outside Advisor's son was in Italy, but lost by the very person who brought him here?"
Federico responded without thinking, "Through your girlfriend?
"Through my g—Federico, this is serious!" Enrico growls.
"And so am I. Today was our day off and I absolutely stated to not bother me for at least a day!" He rubs his eyes in frustration. He can now feel the heaviness and the hints of sickness coming over him.
"Really? Because this situation went out of hand and officially was under your jurisdiction as the fact your guardian acted on giving this delicate mission by proxy."
Federico mentally groans. He already knows this and stated he will talk to his guardians about it. This sounded like Enrico wasn't paying attention when they were trapped between the store and wrecked van or something.
Enrico dark frustrated look turned tired, "At least with the ways everything ended up going down, it led into killing those rumors of Vongola weakening."
This froze the Decimo heir, "What?!"
"You're welcome," Enrico deadpanned.
"I never...since when...what?!" He sits up to the side of his bed.
Enrico sighs, pinching the bridge on his nose, "As the Vongola heir you are scrutinized, more so when you are out and about away from the protection of the mansion."
"I know that—" Federico rolls his eyes and stomps toward his closet to change. He pretends to not feel self conscious when Enrico stood up suddenly behind him.
"No, you don't understand!" Enrico starts to pace around his room, "we had been coddled you too much, I told Father we should've taken the kid gloves long ago..."
Federico pales, stopped in the middle up buttoning up a new, clean plaid shirt, "Have you been keeping things from me?"
Then he realizes with a gasp, "Is it about a possible traitor within the mansion?"
Enrico froze before slowly turns to Federico. Without giving out any emotion the older brother asks, "What do you know?"
Federico returns to finish buttoning his shirt and says nothing as he returns to his walk-in closet for a pair of pajama pants.
"Damn it, Fed!" Growls Enrico.
Once he finished changing, Federico meets his glare, "You are no longer privy to high clearance Vongola matters, Enrico."
At this Enrico gave him an incredulous look. Seeing that Federico isn't going to explain any more than that, Enrico returns to the chair and sits down.
Enrico rubs his face and lets out a long sigh, "...times like these reminds me, you're growing up. Where does the time goes?"
Federico held back the urge to help his clearly distressed brother.
The door slams open and Massimo quickly shuts the door behind him, while looking around the room desperately.
"Massi...what are you—?" Massimo focused on Enrico's wary face for a moment.
Suddenly he hissed and muttered, "Desperate times and all that!"
Enrico was harshly pushed to the ground by Massimo who quickly took the chair and put it under the doorknob.
Federico reaches over to help Enrico stand up, only to quickly get out of a very furious oldest brother's way.
Before Enrico could shout at the middle brother's audacity, Massimo hissed at them, "Quiet, you want Father to find us?!"
"What?" Federico asks, but Enrico surprises him.
"What insanity is it this time?" Enrico sighs.
What? Is he missing something here?
Massimo scoffs, "Apparently he had an epiphany and wanted a family vacation in Mafia Land."
Federico tilts his head and frowns, "What's the problem?"
Massimo turns to stare at him in disbelief, "Are you for real?"
"I never told him and the last time Father was in one of those moods, he was busy with Xanxus."
"...oh yeah, lucky brat," Massimo huffs.
Federico narrows his eyes. Before he said anything, he felt his weathers agitation levels spike up.
He stood up and went toward the door. Massimo ran and tried to stop him only to be pushed back by the moved chair.
"—don't take personal, its a defensive sky thing. I've seen Father act—" Federico heard bits of Enrico said, but someone is messing with what is his.
He slams the door opened and stares.
His father was raising his hands in a calm manner, barely resisting in pushing out his flames to use harmony to calm his guardians.
He better not touch them, they're mine.
"Ah, Federico, there you are. I have been meaning to talk to you," The Ninth smiled a bit too brightly. Has he been drinking?
Federico talked over him, "You have tickets for all of us?"
Catching on his feelings, the Ninth sobered after a quick mixture of pride and regret. Just as quickly, his large smile returned,"Of course. After all you still have you allotted time and to add on for interrupting what took you quite some time to have it off, its 3 days."
"Massimo has informed me," he ignores the curious looks of his guardians for the moment.
"I have not given him the time," his father stated, "Let him know it will be sometime next week. I'll give the finalized date by tomorrow morning."
Federico nods, "Will that be all?"
The old father seemed to want to speak more, but sensing the tension in the hallway, he held back.
"It can wait. Rest well, my son."
Federico says nothing, only hums in agreement. Once his father was gone, Federico releases a long sigh and loosens his tight fists.
"Decimo, sir?"
Federico pinches his nose before facing his guardians.
"To make up for the interruption of our day out, we all have reservations for Mafia Land."
Everyone looks at him in excitement. Not surprising. Mafia Land was very hard to get in, even for him, despite of being Vongola.
Lancia nods, "It is as you said before, an opportunity for all of us to get out and learn more about each other."
Basil grins, now completely recovered from his cold, weeks ago, "Colonnello has taken me before, but I didn't get to see much."
"Lucky!" Romeo ruffles the kid's hair.
"It was for security, but it is great, I bet you'll love the weapons range!" Basil looks more in brighter spirits if only a little tired.
At this Genkishi straightens up and gives a look to his fellow guardians. Federico eyes them as they made a so-so sign and eager nods.
"What...?"
"Worry not, Boss, you will soon understand," Bianchi pats his arm. Everyone warily returned to their rooms, flames flaring around that his own flared back to calm them.
Once he is sure they have returned to their rooms to rest, Federico sighs. Ignoring the questioning looks of his brothers, Federico goes back to sleep.
His guardians' mystery project is now getting on his nerves. Federico hopes it would not be another miscommunication.

A/N:
LaniAhava: Oh boy soon we will be finishing the guardian arc on Federico side. As for Tsuna, he might had enough excitement in Italy, but it just goes down hill from there, after all he has not been trained to not rely on his intuition only yet...
This time around, the interview has a slightly different layout. Today, we are having over the great cook, mother of little Tsunayoshi and wife of Iemitsu with a heart as big as the sky, Nana Sawada!
Nana: Oh my! I'm just a simple housewife. *places her hands on her cheeks, bashfully*
LaniAhava: It has been almost years since we had an interview or more like answering/ commenting reviews so here is a summary of them for you Mrs. Sawada!
Nana: Aw such a nice author, you can call me Mamma!
LaniAhava: ...*author covers face as Nana giggles in amusement* maybe...*passes the question cards.
Nana: Lets see, oh, yes Iemitsu, my heart, my love~. There are many stories about how terrible my husband is and author-san is as guilty.
LaniAhava: *chokes before muttering* I have stories on the works that he has reasons and not as bad...
Nana: I know he has his faults just as I do, but don't we all? Although I am very fortunate. I have spoken to a nice boy, I believe his name is Byakuran? He said Iemitsu returned home to me earlier than usual. *Nana sighs, placing her hands over her chest* My Iemitsu knows he is wrong and has informed me he has secrets, but cannot say them and I respect that. Just as he respects my decision of asking for more help raising our Tsuna than just financially. He agreed to take more vacation time now, especially since we have such odd visitors from his competitors of his company. And if he fails to keep his promise, I have a direct line to his superior. Lal is such a nice young lady.
Oh dear, I spoke too much about my dear Iemitsu! Lets see *looks at notes again*
How I arrived to Italy? Simple, I asked Tsuyoshi for the address. He offered to go since his own boy went as well. He helped me go around asking people I keep finding on my way to find my Tsuna. I did most of the asking, since I learned on Italian on the flight over. It wasn't too hard.
*she shrugs* For some reason Tsuyoshi looked torn between amusement and scared? Especially after he asked about the photo young Hibari gave me of Xanxus.
LaniAhava: Well, that will be all for today, thank you for coming in Mrs, Sawada.
Nana: No thank you. Also I brought you a nice large bento. You are getting too thin, LaniAhava-san. You also must remember to eat your snacks and take breaks, alright?
LaniAhava: H-hai...um until next time LaniAhava out!
