Kyle Castle shifted in his seat trying to pay attention to the teacher, but he couldn't stop thinking of the argument he had with his mother this morning. He was so excited about going to the Senior football player's party tonight when his mom told him he would not be going. Apparently she had run the name of the kid hosting the party and found out he had already been in trouble twice for underage drinking. He was just so angry this morning. He had yelled at her for invading his privacy and he had angrily grabbed his backpack and slammed the front door as he left. Kyle thinks he wouldn't be so upset if he hadn't opened his mouth as he left. He told his mother I fucking hate you. It wasn't that he knew his father was going to kill him that bothered him. It was the fact he could never hate his mother not even a little bit.
Kyle looked up as he heard his name being said forcefully.
"Kyle, the guidance counselor would like to see you in her office." Mr. Jackson his English teacher told him as he waived a hall pass at Kyle.
Kyle quickly grabbed his books and the hall pass and headed out the door. He knocked softly on Ms. Hayes's door before he entered. His eyebrows rose on his face when he saw his principal Mrs. Hampton standing next to Ms. Hayes. "What's going on?" Kyle said as he entered the room.
"Why don't you have a seat?" Mrs. Hampton said gesturing toward the couch.
Kyle immediately felt sick to his stomach. "No, just tell me what's going on please."
"Kyle, please sit down." Ms. Hayes said as she too pointed to the couch.
"Just tell me." Kyle pleaded.
Ms. Hayes took a breath and said, "Your father is coming to pick you up. Your mother was shot this morning at a crime scene. She is currently in surgery. "
Kyle felt himself being guided to the couch. He could hear mumbles of voices, but only one was clear. The voice in his head reminding him the last words he said to his mother were I fucking hate you.
