Notes: Today my workplace ships me back home on a ridiculously tight schedule. I'm convinced I'm unloved, but you know? All workplaces are the same. Keep your inner smile on!
Kjelle knew her mother prided herself on being extremely capable in battle, accepting no aid as she broke through enemy lines, except for her father's occasional defending. However, Sully had fallen behind in recent skirmishes, and now it was Kellam marching in front, slow as he was in comparison to his wife on a horse.
"You're going too fast! Slow down," she heard her mother complain.
Her father sighed and came to a full stop. "If we keep like this, they will leave us... Trust me, I know what I say."
Even with all her precious armor on, Kjelle was fast to backtrack and join them several paces behind the rest of the formation. Sully looked positively uncomfortable on her mount, while Kellam stood by in a non-descript manner. Thankfully there were no enemies nearby, or they would have been in trouble with their sudden immobility and isolation.
"Is everything alright, mother?"
"Yeah," she chuckled, shrugging, "just a dizzy spell, nothing much."
Kjelle's eyes narrowed with suspicion. "You haven't been trying new diets again, have you?"
Sully blushed. "Not so loud!" she hissed to her daughter. "And no, I haven't; I eat well every day."
"I cook," Kellam helpfully declared, but...
"Then something you ate must have been bad," their daughter deduced, and Kellam's contribution to the conversation was lost forever. "Though," that didn't make sense, "you have been behaving strangely for more than a day or two, so that can't be it."
"Behaving strangely how?"
Kjelle stood straighter, looking at her mother intently. "You aren't galloping ahead to bash Risen heads right in like before. Something has changed. And father is just following your lead now, staying away from the frontlines, making you both ineffective in battle."
Sully frowned at her daughter, but then she turned her horse around and scoffed. "Your father and I would never fall behind in our fighting performance. We just agreed to a change, to see how we do with it. When you fight paired up, you will understand." Typical adult dismissal.
Kellam nodded along, his expression unreadable. He tried to enter the conversation again. "And..."
"Risen!" Kjelle interrupted, pointing in the direction of a quickly approaching undead.
And exactly like she had said earlier, Sully rode her mount away while Kellam rushed forward in the opposite direction, striking the enemy hard with a lance. That was the only surprise, the strength and speed with which her father dispatched it. A tiny, "Wow," escaped her lips.
"Everything alright with you two?" Kellam asked cheerfully.
Sully was smirking as she answered. "Yeah, all is right."
"Now you two can't deny it, it just happened before my eyes! You aren't fighting as you used to!" Kjelle accused them.
Her mother gave up with a sigh. "Well, my pregnancy so far has been hard, but I hope to be better in some months." Her father neared her without either noticing. "Still, we would like to keep on fighting together, we want to give you a better future."
