Chapter 36: A Battle to Chase the Spy!

Last time on "Pokémon Hoenn Journey", the group were following May as she wanted to have a bit of Rustboro City food before heading off to the boat to where Dewford Island would be in.

But surprisingly, it turns out that the restaurant May has been searching up had closed down ten years ago! Annoyed with losing the chance to get to Dewford Island, Ash and Minato decides to relax a little bit while Korra and May would search around for an available boat.

Unfortunately, they discovered that the old town they were searching in was rather old and abandoned, that it didn't have any people living in the old part of town.

While they were searching, they meet a man named Mr. Briney and his Wingull, Peeko, who has a boat they could use. But when they return with the group, the old man snaps at the girls and the group, lying that he never made such a promise.

Turned away, Minato stays to discover that Mr. Briney had lied in order to protect him and the others from a Team Aqua Grunt member! Infuriated with how the Grunt treated the old man and with remembering what the organization did, Minato gets ready to strike with Torchic and Korra by his side.

As for the others, they hear from Officer Jenny about the same Team Aqua Grunt that was planning to meet up with his allies, causing the group to realize on where Minato and Korra might be in.

"Jenny, please! I know this may not mean much, but I will do anything I can to help you with your manhunt!" Brock declared, earning a smile from the officer.

"Thank you. But you shouldn't do anything dangerous. I've set up checkpoints all around the perimeter of Rustboro City, so he won't be escaping easily." Officer Jenny assured as the group blinked, before they understood.

"Right." The four all said together with Pikachu giving a cry of agreement. With that, the officer took her leave on her bike as Brock waved to her with a small blush on his face.

"Bye, Jenny! Good luck!" Brock exclaimed before he sighed happily.

"That Officer Jenny sure has a tough job." May pointed out, with Ash agreeing.

"Yeah, seems like she's always riding around looking for bad guys."

"Pika." Ash spoke with Pikachu crying out in agreement.

"So don't you think Team Aqua knows what she's doing as well?" Max asked, causing the group to blink and turn to the Petalburg boy, who made a hypothesis of what the organization might know about the perimeter.

"I'll betcha they know about the perimeter around Rustboro City, just like we do. If that's true, I wonder where those guys are gonna try and meet up..." Max wondered as Ash and May frowned together.

They looked around, with the Petalburg girl making a guess of where they might be at.

"Let me see... If they were around here, you'd think they'd stay out of sight as much as possible." May pointed out, until Brock suddenly got in front of her face!

"Wrong!" Brock called out, startling Ash and May before the Kanto breeder explained of how the member would meet up with his allies.

"Now, if Team Aqua is coming back for that guy, then they'll need some sort of transportation. Do you hear what I'm telling ya?" Brock asked, until Max raised up a good point of how it would be hard to do so.

"Yeah, but having a vehicle around here would make them stand out like a sore thumb!" Max pointed out, causing both him and Brock to think about it more before they widened their eyes in realization.

"Ah! Of course! That's it!" The two exclaimed together as they looked towards the sea.

"They're gonna need a boat, right?" Brock asked, with Max nodding in agreement.

"Yeah, and the only boat around here belongs to Mr. Briney! Right, May?" Max asked, causing the Petalburg girl to blink in surprise before she realized that it was true.

"That's right..." May breathed out as Brock frowned, now understanding on how difficult the situation became.

"This could be bad." Brock grunted with Max adding in on what could be happening to the old sailor right now.

"Mr. Briney and Peeko are in trouble! Minato and Korra must've figured that out already, so that must be why they aren't here with us! Because they already knew!" Max exclaimed while May frowned.

"Hold on, but why didn't they tell us about it if they knew...?" May asked as Brock frowned.

"I guess... because it was Team Aqua that Minato..." Brock started to say, but he didn't have to finish for Ash and the others to understand on why the former lonely boy wouldn't tell them.

"Because he's after them for making his family suffer... I think I get what's happening. They must've known that the guy is planning to meet up with his buddies in the ocean...! That's why he needs Mr. Briney's boat!" Ash finished with a frown.

May gasped in realization, now understanding of why the old sailor rejected her and the others in the first place.

"So Mr. Briney was protecting us when he pretended not to know me and Korra..." May breathed out in realization, as Ash frowned.

"We've got to get back there... Minato and Korra might already be there!" Ash called out, causing the others to agree. With that in mind, the four ran to head back to where Mr. Briney lived so they could help the old sailor along with their friends.

While they were running, they didn't take notice of the two hooded figures that watched them run back to the old sailor's home.

"He's got some good friends with him, that's for sure." The hooded boy spoke out as the hooded girl gave a small smile under her darkened face.

"He sure does... I wonder if they will stick with him until we get Mina-chan to come with us..." The hooded girl wondered as the hooded boy remained calm, before looking up at the blue sky.

"Time will tell... You have to always expect the unexpected... There's no telling what these humans will do." The hooded boy reminded, causing the hooded girl to nod in both understanding and agreement.

Back to Minato and Korra...

The two spied on the Team Aqua Grunt that was holding Mr. Briney and Peeko captive as the old sailor was forced to lead the Grunt to where his boat was. As the two watched, they witnessed the old sailor revealing his boat.

At the sight of it, the Grunt could only give a scoff at what the appearance of the boat was like.

"What's with this old boat? You just better hope it runs." The Grunt scoffed, as Mr. Briney glared back at him in return.

"What I hope is you realize you're never going to win. Of course, it's still not too late to turn yourself in to Officer Jenny, you know..." Mr. Briney advised calmly, as the Grunt smirked and chuckled at the little offer.

"Thanks for the advice. Holding you and your Wingull captive is all I need." The Grunt chuckled as Crawdaunt raised its big pincers towards Peeko, causing the little Wingull to shriek in fear as it shivered at the sight of the pincers!

Gritting his teeth, the old sailor glared at the criminal.

"Don't you dare hurt my little Peeko." Mr. Briney snapped angrily, until he heard a familiar voice.

"Mr. Briney! Mr. Briney!" Ash called out as he knocked on the door. The sound of their friend caught Minato and Korra's attention as well as they turned to see the others not too far from where they were standing!

"Ash! And the others...! They must've figured out the trouble that Mr. Briney is in!" Korra breathed out in surprise. Minato on the other hand, glanced back to his companions before he ran to where the Grunt was!

"What... Minato!? What are you-!?" Korra gasped as Minato let out a loud yell!

"AHHH!" Minato screamed as he tackled the Grunt down!

"AUGH!" The two rolled on the ground as the Grunt felt the tackle that the former lonely boy has given him! Crawdaunt turned in surprise to see his Trainer getting attacked. The old sailor on the other hand gasped in surprise at the sight of the young Trainer.

But while the Pokémon was distracted, Torchic took the chance to use Fire Spin! The surprise attack caught Crawdaunt off guard as he barely evaded the attack to see another enemy glaring at him!

"You again...!?" The Grunt snapped as he got the former lonely boy off of him!

"You're not going anywhere this time! I want some answers right now!" Minato demanded angrily as the Grunt gritted his teeth before he turned to his partner Pokémon.

"Let's go, Crawdaunt!" The Grunt called out as his Water-Dark Type glared at Minato, who glared back with Torchic by his side. At that point, Mr. Briney took the chance to warn the group of the enemy that was with him right now.

"Stay away, kids! Team Aqua is here!" Mr. Briney yelled, catching the others by surprise!

"Ah! Korra!" Max exclaimed as he took notice of Korra near the dock, causing her to turn to the group. But as she turned...

"Korra! Look out!" Brock shouted out, causing her to see who was behind her! But before she could react, a Bubblebeam attack knocked her back!

"EEK!" Korra shrieked as she was knocked back by Crawdaunt's Bubblebeam attack. As she was knocked back, both May and Brock caught her before her fall could get worse.

"We got you...!" Brock exclaimed as everyone turned to see the one who struck her!

"Oh no... That thing's got Peeko!" May exclaimed in worry as Korra shook her head, trying to recover from the blow she had taken just now.

"That Crawdaunt... That's the same Crawdaunt that we encountered yesterday at the Devon Corporation...!" Korra grunted, catching the others by surprise before Ash raised a question for the others to be alert about.

"Hold on... Where's Minato!?" Ash exclaimed as the others blinked in surprise before...

"Get off of me, you little brat!" The Grunt snapped angrily as he came into the view of the others with Minato still trying to hold him down, with Torchic continuing to peck the Grunt's head, much to his annoyance!

"Not until you give me some answers, you murderer!" Minato retorted angrily, causing the group to widen their eyes to see the former lonely boy trying to take the Grunt down!

"Minato!? What are you doing!?" Ash exclaimed, causing the former lonely boy to give a quick answer.

"Getting this murderer to talk, that's what!" Minato grunted angrily, as the Grunt took notice of the others.

"Not you kids again...! Tch, you're all really becoming an annoyance to me!" The Grunt exclaimed, allowing the group to recognize the man.

"That guy from the Devon Building... It is you!" Ash gasped as the Grunt pushed Minato off of him roughly! The former lonely boy stumbled back as Torchic jumped off of the Grunt's head, as he chirped angrily at the man.

"The same kids that interfered with me... and this one brat that is trying to take me down... Well, it seems that I got myself into a difficult situation. Still... Go, Crawdaunt!" The Grunt called out as Ash was ready to fight.

"Let's go, Pikachu!" Ash cried out, as the Mouse Pokémon cried out in agreement before jumping off his shoulder to fight the enemy! The former lonely boy turned to Torchic, who was ready to deliver another surprise attack!

But the surprise attack was already done, not by Torchic, but by someone else!

Smoke bombs fell out of nowhere, hitting the ground between Pikachu and Crawdaunt! Torchic widened his eyes in surprise as the smoke got to him as well! The group were surprised by the sudden smoke assault, as were Minato and the Grunt!

"Huh? What's going on!?" The Grunt questioned in surprise. At his question, a familiar evil trio began their motto...!

"Prepare for trouble with a smoky silhouette!"

"Make it double, 'cause you ain't seen nothing yet!"

"To protect the world from devastation."

"To unite all people within our nation."

"To denounce the evils of truth and love."

"To extend our reach to the stars above."

"Jessie!"

"James!"

"Team Rocket smokes you out at the speed of light!"

"Surrender now or prepare to fight, fight, fight!"

"Meowth, that's right!"

"Wobbuffet!"

"You guys...? What are you doing here...!?" Korra demanded, as Jessie smirked down at their young enemies.

"Always with the same question. We're here for Pikachu and Torchic, but we're taking Wingull, too." answered Jessie, much to the old sailor's surprise as he glared at the evil trio.

"What? Oh no you won't!" Mr. Briney snapped back, as the Grunt stared at the evil trio with an amused look. Upon seeing the Team Aqua Grunt, the evil trio looked down at him as well, as they recognized him from yesterday as well.

"Oh, so it's you again." Jessie pointed out, with James smirking.

"All right, so yesterday was a bust." James added, with Meowth smirking down.

"But 'dis go round, we're gonna grab every Pokémon possible!" Meowth declared, only for the Grunt to smirk as he scoffed at that idea.

"Really? Well, I have my doubts." The Grunt stated, only for Meowth to prove his words true by taking out a remote!

"Oh yeah? Well, doubt this!" Meowth called out as he pressed on the button on the remote. At that moment, a vacuum from the balloon began to suck in Pikachu and Torchic! The boys dove to reach for their starter Pokémon.

"Pikachu!?"

"Torchic!"

The boys however, were too late as they watched their partners being sucked into the vacuum in horror! But they weren't the only ones being sucked in as Crawdaunt felt himself being sucked in as well.

But by using one of his pincers, he held onto the ground to prevent himself from being sucked in. But that didn't go so well for Peeko, who couldn't do anything while it was trapped in the small cage!

The Water-Dark Type lost grip of the cage as Peeko was sucked into the vacuum as well, much to the old sailor's horror.

"Peeko!" Mr. Briney gasped as Brock took out a Pokéball to aid his friends.

"Lotad, let's go!" Brock called out as his Water-Grass Type Pokémon appeared to lend a hand.

"Water Gun, now!" Brock called out. As he was ordered, Lotad was about to shoot Water Gun, which freaked Team Rocket out. They knew how strong a Water Gun from Lotad were as they braced themselves for impact.

But surprisingly, the only Water Gun Lotad spouted out was so weak, that it hardly even reached the balloon! At seeing this, the evil trio laughed a little as they mocked for the effort that Lotad has attempted.

"Nice try for a little squirt!" Team Rocket laughed, until...

SPLASH!

The evil trio screamed as the next Water Gun from Lotad splashed onto their balloon hard! The impact was so hard that Meowth ended up dropping the remote controller, causing it to malfunction!

And at that moment, the trap door from the balloon opened up, releasing the three captive Pokémon! As Torchic and Pikachu fell into the ocean, Peeko fell on the ground, still trapped in its cage.

"The trap door!" Meowth gasped in shock.

"Whose idea was that!?" James exclaimed as Mr. Briney took this chance to run for his friend.

"I got you, Peeko!" Mr. Briney called out as he ran towards the Wingull. But he was intercepted by Crawdaunt, who took ahold of the cage again and blocked the old sailor from getting through!

"Oh no, Peeko!" May gasped as the group turned to see what was happening. The Grunt on the other hand, made his move to eliminate the weaker enemies!

"Crawdaunt, Bubblebeam now and blow that blasted balloon away!" The Grunt shouted out.

Without hesitation, the Water-Dark Type shot Bubblebeam onto the balloon, causing it to explode and send the evil trio flying high into the air!

"TEAM ROCKET'S BLASTING OFF AGAIN!" The evil trio shouted together in unison as they were soon out of sight. But while everyone else was distracted, the Grunt and Crawdaunt ran to where the boat was!

"Stop!" Mr. Briney yelled, only to lose him as the bridge opened up to let the boat go through! As it sped away, the group watched it leave, much to their dismay.

"STOP! I said, stop!" Minato yelled angrily, as the boat was getting further and further away from them.

"Come back! You can't take Peeko away!" May shouted angrily as well, only for her voice to not be enough to reach the Grunt as he was already far from the group already!

"He must be heading to where the other Team Aqua members are... We need to follow after him!" Korra pointed out, as she had heard the brief story from the others when they had returned to save Mr. Briney and Peeko.

"How do we do that? We don't have a boat, remember?" Max reminded as Minato clenched his fists.

"So what... We're just going to stand here and let him get away? To heck with that...!" Minato snapped as the others looked at him in concern. But before anyone could talk to him, Mr. Briney came over with a serious look on his face.

"All right, then. Looks like I'm left with no other choice..." Mr. Briney grunted before he turned to the group.

"Okay, kids. Come with me." Mr. Briney requested as the group did so. As they were inside, the old sailor opened a secret hatch that caught everyone by surprise! As the water was out, a new boat came out from under!

The design of the new boat looked most likely like a Wingull, as everyone watched in awe to see the sight of it.

"Say hello to my super-high-speed boat, the SS 'Wingull'!" Mr. Briney called out proudly, yet with a serious tone.

"Okay, that's a ship..." Brock pointed out in disbelief, with Ash noticing the design of it.

"It's a Wingull..." Ash breathed out with Pikachu crying out in awe. The old sailor glared at it proudly, turning to where the Team Aqua Grunt had escaped to.

"Ha! We'll show that Team Aqua a thing or three!" Mr. Briney called out as everyone got onto the Wingull boat, with Mr. Briney beginning to drive it! With the boat beginning to make its move, the old sailor drove it out to make chase.

"After retiring from the sea captain's life, my days became boring, one after another, and the thrill of the seven seas drifted into the dark past into a sad and lonely life... And then one day..." Mr. Briney started as he recalled the time when he had first met Peeko.

"My dear Peeko suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Watching that Wingull as it lived freely flying through the skies, I felt the unmistakable power of my youth welling up inside of me again..."

"Then, I knew that the time had come for me to travel the oceans once more, this time with my Peeko, so I built this boat." Mr. Briney explained as the group listened. While they were listening, Minato frowned before...

"Look... he's over there!" Minato called out, pointing to see a boat up ahead that was nearing to where the rocks are!

As for the Team Aqua Grunt, he was almost on his way to where the other members of his teammates would be in.

"Okay, we're close to the rendezvous point." The Grunt started until he heard his Crawdaunt grunting in surprise and in concern, causing him to turn and see to where his Pokémon partner was staring at.

"Crawdaunt? What- Huh? Where'd that boat come from?" The Grunt turned in surprise to see the SS Wingull coming for him fast!

"Team Aqua, give Peeko back to me now! The oceans tie the world together. You will never get away from me!" Mr. Briney yelled through the boat's speaker, causing the Grunt to smirk in amusement as he turned back to where his meeting place would be at.

"Ha! Oh, please. Spare me the dramatics." The Grunt smirked as he continued to speed to where his allies would be in.

While the chase went on, the group took notice of how further he was getting away from them!

"He's picking up speed!" Max pointed out, with the old sailor recognizing to where he was going.

"And headed straight for Triangle Rock!" Mr. Briney pointed out, with Brock realizing on what this meant.

"I'll bet that's where he's gonna meet up with the rest of his team members!" Brock exclaimed as Minato gritted his teeth.

"Yeah? Well, not on my watch...!" Minato grunted as he ran out to see where the boat was going. Ash followed the former lonely boy, with Pikachu by his side as the boys climbed up to the top of the boat to see where the enemy was.

"What are you doing...?" Minato questioned as the Kanto Trainer gave a weak smile.

"Helping out a friend. You need to ask that guy something, right? Well, I'm gonna help you out!" Ash called out, causing Minato to blink before he closed his eyes, until he opened them to turn to where the Grunt is.

"Okay, Crawdaunt's a Water Pokémon, so let's fight it by using lightning! Minato, you and Torchic help out with your hot Fire Spin attack!" Ash called out, earning a small nod from the former lonely boy.

But before Pikachu or Torchic could make their attack, the Grunt took notice of what the boys were going to do as he called to his Pokémon to make the attack before his enemies could!

"Water Pulse!" The Grunt shouted out, as Crawdaunt did so, using the Water Type attack to knock the Wingull boat out of course and to speed up! Everyone yelled in surprise as the waves rocked them out of course!

"Follow up with Bubblebeam!" The Grunt shouted out, as the Rogue Pokémon did so, causing a big wave to occur and splash down on the boys and the SS Wingull! By the time they recovered from the big splash, they took notice of where the boat was headed!

"Ah! They're almost to Triangle Rock!" Ash exclaimed, as the chase was soon coming to an end.

"Peeko!" Mr. Briney called out as Brock noticed on how fast the Grunt was going despite on where the destination was!

"He's going too fast! He's gonna crash!" Brock exclaimed as the boys were ready to stop the crash!

"All right, Pikachu! Use Thunder!"

"Torchic, you use Fire Spin!"

The two starters didn't need to be told twice as they launched their special attacks to where the giant rock was! And while most of the rock was gone...

"There's still a lot of it left! And they're still going too fast!" Korra pointed out as the old sailor glared before gritting his teeth in determination.

"All right, kids...! Hold on tight!" Mr. Briney yelled as he boosted the boat's speed to quickly catch up the old boat!

"Look out! We're toast!" Max screamed in shock and concern as May was more concerned about the little Water-Flying Type.

"Peeko!" May exclaimed, only for Mr. Briney to assure that they were going to be just fine.

"We're alright! Just watch! OH YEAH!" Mr. Briney yelled as he intercepted the boat, causing the old boat to be sent flying into the air! It managed to get past the destroyed rock and fall past it!

At the impact of it falling back on the water, the cage that held Peeko fell out, too! The old sailor took notice of this and dove to save his feathered friend.

"Peeko!" Mr. Briney gasped as he dove into the water and swam up to the Wingull.

"Tell me you're okay!" Mr. Briney requested, only for the Water-Flying Type to cry out happily, assuring the old sailor that it was fine.

"What a relief..." Mr. Briney sighed, feeling relief coming to him until everyone heard a strange noise! As everyone turned, something big was coming out of the water! And that something big was... a giant blue submarine!

Everyone gasped to see the size of it as they took notice of the symbol it had...

"That's... Team Aqua's submarine...!?" Minato pointed out in anger and disbelief, as the others watched in awe before May pointed out on where the Grunt was.

"Look over there...! He did escape after all..." May pointed out, allowing everyone to see where the Grunt had escaped into the hatch with Crawdaunt by his side. The moment the Grunt was in, the submarine began to dive back down.

"He... got away..." Minato grunted angrily, causing the others to turn to the former lonely boy in concern.

"You haven't seen the last of me, Team Aqua. That I vow..." Mr. Briney grunted as Ash stared at his friend in concern before glaring back to where Team Aqua's submarine had disappeared off to.

"Team Aqua... Just who are those guys, anyway?" Ash asked with a serious tone in his voice.

Later...

No one said another word about this as they all headed back to Mr. Briney's home, taking the old boat and the SS Wingull with them.

By the time they had gotten back, it was night as Peeko was finally freed from the cage it was forced to be in as May offered it some Pokémon food. Being happy of being freed, the Wingull happily gobbled up the food that was offered to it!

Max watched in awe as Korra just smiled, while the Kanto Trainer realized on how it must be feeling a little.

"Guess it must've been hungry." Ash pointed out as May smiled a little.

"Well, after going through all of that, wouldn't you be, too?" May asked. The moment she asked that, lots of stomachs growled at the question. The old sailor laughed at this as he gave a big grin.

"Ha ha ha! That answered your question, May! Peeko's not the only hungry one." Mr. Briney chuckled as Max blushed, feeling embarrassed for how hungry he was feeling ever since they left the Center this morning.

"Oh yeah, I haven't eaten anything since this morning." Max muttered sheepishly, as May sighed in defeat.

"I know... and I was really hoping to try some of that Rustboro pasta." May sighed sadly, only for the old sailor to recognize the food that the Petalburg girl was referring to.

"You referring to Rustboro City pasta? The restaurant you passed on the way here?" Mr. Briney asked, causing Korra to blink before she answered for the group.

"Yes... That's the one we're talking about." Korra stated, before the Kanto Breeder turned to the old sailor with the question.

"Do you know it?" Brock asked, causing the old sailor to chuckle.

"Know it? You bet I do. My best friend ran that place for years!" Mr. Briney explained, much to the group's surprise as the old sailor offered the group a little meal for his best friend to make.

"Tell ya what, I'll just give him a call and ask him to whip up some pasta for us all! After a good night's sleep, we'll head for Dewford Island!" Mr. Briney offered, much to the group's joy as they smiled at the old sailor.

"Thanks, Mr. Briney!" The group all spoke together as they spent the night at the old sailor's place.

The night went on as the old sailor's friend did come with some of his special pasta for everyone to enjoy. With the meal done and eaten, the group and the old sailor said their thanks to the old friend before getting ready to sleep.

The moon remained on the sky as the night went on without any more problems. But Minato on the other hand, thought differently as he continued to recall of how the Team Aqua grunt had gotten away when he had the chance to inquire him about the incident...

"That submarine... so that's where Team Aqua's hideout is, huh... If I had chased him into that, then..." Minato thought before he frowned as he drifted off to sleep.

The next morning...

With everyone prepared to make their leave, the old sailor drove his SS Wingull boat as the old one seemed to have a little trouble of working due to how the Team Aqua grunt had used it.

Now, with little problems out of the way, the group were soon on their way to head for Dewford Island as the Kanto Trainer was excited to earn his second Hoenn Gym Badge at the Dewford Gym.

"Yes...! That second Badge is mine!" Ash declared, with Pikachu crying out in agreement. Minato on the other hand, remained on having little thoughts about the next Gym Battle, as he was more onto the organization.

But upon realizing that thinking about it now would raise more problems, the former lonely boy shook his head as he let the bitter thought slide.

"I just know that I'll eventually see that grunt again. When the time comes, I'll be sure to get my answers..." Minato assured to himself in his mind as he joined the group of enjoying the breeze thanks to the boat's movement.
