Fawn as very tired by the time she flew over another building. It wasn't for sure yet, but she could feel herself getting closer and closer to Rosetta with each flap of her wings.
"Hang on Rosetta, I'm coming, " she said as she flew past another building.
Finally, however, she was so tired, she had to rest, but she knew that time was running out. She landed on the first building she saw. She was more exhausted than before when she was searching for Ro in the Griffiths home.
She breathed heavily as she broke down.
"I...have...to get to her." she said as she caught her breath.
She looked up at the night sky. It seemed like it was at least 11:30. There was only a half hour left. Fawn was getting desperate, but she had to act fast. Find Rosetta, call the others, and wait for them to come so that she could drink the stew. Seemed like a lot to in little time.
The thought of this made her instantly fly up and continue, but then she was stopped in her tracts. As she looked forward, she spotted something below her. White balloons. She also saw bright lights, many humans in goofy looking outfits, and the sound of classical music rang from the dome-like building housing it all.
"I made it!" shouted Fawn as she looked down in cheer. "Now I just need to find-"
But before Fawn could say her name, out came Martin searching around.
"ROSETTA!?" He yelled into the night, frantically searching for her.
Fawn knew it was him from the sound of his voice, despite being high in the air. And if Rosetta wasn't with him then...
"Oh no! Rosetta!" Fawn began darting around as well searching for her best friend. Rosetta wasn't with Martin, where could she be!?
Rosetta meanwhile kept running throughout the city tears streaking down her face. She now wanted so desperately to return home. She constantly ran past many people who consistently darted out of the way of the formally clad woman zipping through them. She even nearly dodged a horse carriage as she crossed a road and into an alleyway. She had no idea where she was, making it difficult to judge where to go. Suddenly she stopped. She was exhausted, but her heart was pounding like a drum in her chest and then suddenly it began to slow down more and more and more. She was beginning to feel all woozy again. Her vision began to blur. She tried to feel around for something to hold on to or catch herself with but to no avail. The effects of the flower were catching up to her rapidly.
Martin continued to chase after her. She ran out so fast he wasn't sure where to look. She could be anywhere.
"Miss Rosetta!?" He called once more. Little did he know that Fawn as above him calling out for her as well.
"Ro!? Ro!? Please, where are you!?" she cried.
She was beginning to tear up really hard searching frantically for Rosetta.
Suddenly, she spotted Martin on the ground. He was still searching every corner for Rosetta.
"Rosetta!?" He shouted again desperately. "Roset-"
Suddenly he hit something with his foot. Looking down, he had found a sign of Rosetta's whereabouts: One of her slippers.
He quickly crouched down and picked it up. Rosetta was nearby but where?
Fawn noticed this and flew down closer to him without being spotted. She too was hoping he'd found a clue.
Martin continued to frantically look around for Ro when suddenly his eyes caught the slightest gleam of something coming from a nearby alleyway. Although he had to squint a bit for his eyes to adjust to the darkness of the night he finally saw her. Rosetta had collapsed in the alley and was unconscious.
"Rosetta! Darling!" He quickly got up and began sprinting into the alleyway.
"Ro!?" Fawn quickly followed him overhead. She noticed Rosetta on the ground.
He had quickly gotten to Rosetta and held her up in his arms.
"Miss Rosetta! Please speak to me!" He tried to shake her awake.
He began to call out for help, but the streets were practically empty. He tried desperately to revive her but to no avail. The color from Rosetta's face was beginning to fade.
"RO!? Fawn screamed as she found them, a sudden dread overtaking her.
Suddenly she heard a familiar voice from afar to her left.
"Fawn! We're here!" It was Bobble along with the others and the pot of stew that they made.
"We're coming dewdrop!" shouted Silvermist.
Fawn quickly waved them over.
"GUYS HURRY! ROSETTA SHE'S..."
Suddenly Fawn found herself dropping out of the air. She had officially run out of pixie dust.
"Oh no!"
She screamed as she began falling.
"FAWN!" Bobble screamed. He and the others were so far away they wouldn't have reached her in time.
Fawn luckily landed right in front of Martin, on top of Rosetta. Martin was so startled and taken aback that he fell backward.
On top of an unconscious Rosetta was a glowing orange figure. Fawn fell hard, but was otherwise, okay. Martin was stunned at the sight of the creature that his daughter would always talk about. Fawn leaned up from her fall a bit dazed. Curious and a tad skeptical, Martin slowly reached out his hand towards Fawn. She slowly turned to see him and was dreadfully startled. She and Martin just stared at each other for a minute, Martin himself in near disbelief of whose eyes he was locked with. He simply had no words. None at all.
The only things that had awoken the pair from their frozen states were the deluge of doves raining down on them, along with the stew that the fairies had made.
"The stew!" Fawn realized.
Bobble got off his dove and quickly fluttered towards Fawn.
"Fawn are you okay!? Are you hurt!?" he asked rapidly. Worried for his love's safety.
"I-I'm fine but we have to hurry!" Fawn shouted checking the stars it was nearly midnight.
"She needs to drink the stew now!"
Rosetta was still breathing a bit but was still fading as she was held gently still in Martin's arms.
The fairies weren't sure of how they could distribute the stew to Rosetta. They were too small and the pot was too big.
"What do we do!?" asked a concerned Tink.
Fawn quickly looked up at a still flabergasted Martin. She knew that he was Rosetta's only hope now at this point.
The fairies all presented the stew to Martin. He looked down at it, and then back to Rosetta who was just about faded. Quickly grabbing the pot, opened Rosetta's mouth and gently had her drink it until it was gone. She swallowed it, but after a moment, to everyone's surprise, nothing seemed to happen. Rosetta's beautiful fair skin was now faded pale. The dreadful realization quickly washed over everyone.
"No, no, Rosetta!" yelled Martin desperately trying to wake his love.
Ro wasn't coming to...
Fawn found herself in more tears than ever. Sil began to cry too.
"No. Rosetta." Fawn sobbed. "We can't lose you."
"I'm sorry sweetie." Sil sobbed herself.
They both hugged innocently.
"And the last thing I said to her was that she wasn't my friend! I feel so horrible!
"Shh. Shh." Sil found herself crying as well. She should have listened from the start. The others were also crying.
Martin couldn't hold back his words anymore as he looked down.
"Listen to me okay, I love you! I love you." He cried with his head to hers.
"That's it." Martin cringed in his eyes.
Everyone bowed their heads. For the first time, Martin returned his affections by giving her one last sad kiss.
"I'm so sorry," he said as he held her to his chest.
But then suddenly, a miracle happened, Rosetta began to glow in a bright golden light.
Martin opened his eyes and looked down. She glowed brighter and brighter. Everyone had to stand back and shield their eyes. Not wanting to let her go, Martin simply shut his eyes.
Slowly Rosetta began to shrink back down. Everyone watched in pure astonishment as this happened. She shrank and shrank until soon, she was back to fairy size. In fact, she was a fairy again!
As the golden light disappeared and her previous form returned, she still laid on the ground.
Martin picked her up.
Fawn broke from Sil and flew over to her.
The others flew up and see if she was alright.
"Ro?" asked Fawn. "A-Are you alive."
Finally, Rosetta's eyes opened. Everything was blurry, but as her vision cleared, the first one she saw was her dear friend Fawn.
"F-F-Fawn?" she finally spoke after a while.
Fawn's face brightened.
"ROSETTA!" Fawn shouted, meeting her best friend very tight bear hug in sheer joy and a huge relief.
"Fawn. Hey, where did you-" Rosetta backed her away. Then she started feeling around herself. Her ears were pointy again, her wings were back too. And she could finally speak.
"Hey! It's me again. I'm BACK!" she shot into the air. The others group hugged her as they rejoiced the safe return of their friend. Many words were exchanged such as "we were so worried about you.", and "Are you alright!? There were also some many tears of joy.
Martin while still awestruck that fairies actually did exist, couldn't help but smile.
The next day, the fairies were all readying their doves for take-off back to Pixie Hollow. Among them was Rosetta, who had actually managed to load up successfully this time.
"There, all finished!" she said triumphantly. Her dove cooed a bit in comfort.
Rosetta was happy but sighed a little. She knew now that she couldn't stay with Martin and Lizzie even she wanted to. She was never meant to be human, she was in fact a fairy and she had many duties in Pixie Hollow that she had to attend to, including her friends as well as her very being.
Martin and Lizzie came to see her off though. Lizzie was amazed at the fact that fairies were, in fact, real, and that she had even bonded with one with Rosetta.
"Well, this is it isn't it?" asked Lizzie as she stood next to her father. Rosetta flew over to her and hugged her.
"I'll miss you Rosetta." said Lizzie..
Rosetta put her hand to Lizzie's heart. Lizzie understood.
"I'll always remember." She said almost tearing up.
Rosetta soon found herself face to face once again with Martin.
She flew up to his face. Martin could hardly find the words.
"I-I never knew you were-" he tried to say, but Rosetta put a tiny finger to his lips, she flew around him on the right a little, and kissed him on the cheek. For the first time, he found himself blushing. She blushed too.
"I will miss you," he said quite seriously. "And... I can't believe I'm saying this but...I love you, Rosetta."
Rosetta, moved by Martin's words, found herself cupped within his embrace.
"I love you too," she said feeling the warmth of his hands around her.
Even though he was thrilled that she was alive and her old self, deep down, he wished he could actually hold her in his arms again.
Mrs. Perkins happened by as well. She had something very tiny in her fingers. She walked up to a fluttering Rosetta and gave it to her.
"Here ya go dear," she said. "A little something for the trip."
Rosetta opened the tiny pouch that was just her size. It was a small stack of tiny pancakes. Rosetta couldn't help but giggle and give Mrs. P a hug a well.
"Oh, good heavens!" she said not expecting it.
"Okay, everyone! PREPARE FOR TAKE-OFF!" shouted the Minister of Summer. The fairies were just getting ready to leave.
Rosetta gazed at the Griffiths one more time before getting onto her dove. She stared at Martin once more before blowing him a kiss, he did the same.
"To the air!" the Minister shouted. The doves took off. Rosetta soon caught up with Fawn and Bobble as they flew higher and higher.
"Hey, Ro?" asked Fawn.
"Yeah?" Rosetta asked turning to face her.
"You sure you're gonna be okay?"
Rosetta looked back down at the Griffiths, she thought for a moment, and just knew she had to leave them with just one more thing.
To Fawn and Bobble's shock and surprise, Rosetta as well as many other garden fairies shot off of their doves and quickly flew towards the Griffiths backyard where they used every last bit of their powers to replenish the Griffiths once-barren garden as well as many other flowers around them. Everyone cheered and got back onto their doves.
"Yes, I think I will," said Rosetta giving one final wave to Martin.
And as she looked on towards the second star to the right, she knew that while she may never see the Griffiths again, that she would always remember them.
The End.
Soooo yeah. I changed the ending. Maybe it's not the fairytale ending that you were expecting, but I have a couple of good reasons why I changed it. For one the ending to the original story was too "convenient" everything seemed to work out for every main character and no sacrifices were made. It was sort of an "everybody wins" type of situation and I decided I wanted to do a more realistic, mature, and heartwarming take for the rewrite. Tell me what you think of the new ending. Did you love it? Hate it? Leave a comment down below.
