Special chapter – Halloween surprise

"There she heard it. The chilling laughter of children echoing through the street. It chilled her down to the bones as she picked up her pace. Her eyes dashed around rapidly, her breathing laboured as she tried to find someone or somewhere that would keep her safe. Shadows flickering on the walls with no one in sight. Then silence. Only the howling of the wind was left. Then the sound of metal scraping against the cement. 'click, click, scrape….click, click, scrape….' She turned around. No one was there yet the sound was getting closer and closer. She made a mad dash for the nearest building. She banged against the door, screaming for help, screaming for someone to let her in. But no one answered. It was like she was the only one there. Her fear pushed her forward. The urge to live powered her down the never-ending street. The scraping noise got louder and faster. Her pursuer right on her tail. She screamed, tears pouring down her face as she cried for help but only the darkness answered her. She felt a chill down her spine as she saw a dark figure appear from the corner. It stopped and seemed to stare at her, then it vanished. The scraping noises stopped and the chill was gone. She was about to approach a main road. The feeling of relief filled her as she began to run faster. Her racing heart beginning to speed up as hope filled her soul. Her face beamed as she made it onto the main road. She saw people walking down the road and shops were brightly lit. She walked down the street and headed home, sticking to places with bright lights and many people. As she approached her street, she checked her phone. Her mother had messaged her asking when she was coming home. The girl began to type her reply when she heard a muffled sound. The sound of someone crying into something. She turned around sharply to look behind her. It was rather dark but there was a little girl on the floor, crying into her teddy bear. The girl hesitated to walk over but she couldn't leave the little girl alone. So she walked over and tapped the girl on the shoulder. 'Are you okay? Where are your parents?' The little girl froze and then, 'YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT WALKING!'"

"ARGH! NO!"

The light was turned on as Kuroko laughed at her tanned friend. She was delighted to see that Aomine, Kise and Momoi were all trembling with fear. Momoi was huddled up against Aomine with tears in her eyes while Kise had gone deathly white and was hiding behind Kagami whose soul had begun to fly away. Aomine had a look of pure terror on his face and his mouth was gaping, Kuroko realised that it was Aomine who had screamed.

"Ahahaha! Dai-kun! This is too much! My stomach hurts!"

"Dang it Tetsu. I shouldn't have ever agreed to this stupid thing. Why are we telling ghost stories at night on Halloween!? WHO CAME UP WITH THIS STUPID IDEA!?"

"It was me, Aomine. If I recall correctly, it was you who wanted to do something scary for Halloween this year. I simply gave Tetsuya the idea."

"Damn you Akashi. Great, I'm not walking home alone ever again."

"Same! MO~ Tetsu-chan that was so scary. I'm so scared now!"

"I think it was stupid. I don't believe in ghosts or the supernatural. I only believe in fate."

Kuroko gave Midorima an awkward smile who huffed and put down his box of chalk. Though he seemed rather calm, Kuroko could see his hands tremble slightly and a knowing grin grew on her face.

"Right, well…who's up for another one?"

A collective 'NO' came right after she asked and she could tell that everyone had had enough.

"Fine, let's do something else to take your mind off of it."

"Hmm…do you still have snacks Kuro-chin?"

"Yes, of course. I made you guys some Halloween cookies, though, I'm not too happy with how they turned out. I'll go get them."

"Ahh! Kurokocchi, I'm come with you."

Kuroko nodded and Kise followed her into the kitchen to grab the plates of pumpkin shaped cookies. It was the Halloween of their last year of Highschool and Akashi and Kuroko had planned to spend it together with the group. Aomine jumped on the idea saying he wanted it to be super fun and scary so Kuroko and Akashi complied.

"How did you even come up with that story Kurokocchi? It was super scary."

"Oh I read it online. I did some prior research earlier this week. I found a bunch that I wanted to tell but you guys only heard one and bailed already. I read that it was based on a true story."

Kise shuddered as Kuroko calmly picked up two plates and headed back into her living room. Aomine and Kagami were arguing, again, Akashi was talking to Midorima while Murasakibara was feeding Momoi some popcorn to calm her down.

"We're back!"

She saw Murasakibara's eyes light up and widen and it brought a smile to her face.

"Mura-kun, please leave some for the others too."

"Hm? Ehhh…okay."

"Wait, why'd you decide to host a Halloween party anyway?"

"Because it's our last year as highschoolers and I know university is busy. It'll be hard to get together again since some of us may be abroad again."

She looked at Kagami and flashed him a cute smile and he rolled his eyes. To anyone who didn't know her, that smile may look innocent but the true meaning of it was that she was smug that she practically always got what she wanted.

"So what are we doing now?"

"Let's play a game."

"Uhh hell no. I'm not playing any games that involves ghosts and shit."

Kuroko rolled her eyes. Aomine looked tough on the outside, but she knew that he was terrified of ghosts and the supernatural. She'd known it since she first met him, when he thought she was a ghost.

"I'm not stupid Dai-kun. I know not to mess with that stuff. I meant monopoly."

A sigh of relief left his lips and she could see the others look relieved as well. She pulled out the monopoly box from under the table and set it up. An hour into the game, Kagami and Aomine were practically bankrupt, Kise wasn't doing any better while Akashi was at the top.

"Kagami, you landed on my property, please pay me 4 million dollars."

"I DON'T HAVE THAT MONEY!"

"Well, then you lost."

Kagami handed over the measly 200k that he had to Akashi who was grinning.

"Hah Bakagami's the loser."

"Shut up Ahomine!"

"Dai-kun it's your turn."

"Hah watch how it's done, Scrub."

Aomine moved his truck 6 steps only to land onto Akashi's most expensive property. Akashi flashed him a knowing smile as Aomine jumped up in rage.

"For fuck sake! Just take it already Akashi. Damn it."

"Thank you Aomine."

"OI Tetsu, do something about your boyfriend."

"You don't think I'm trying!? We should have just played charades."

A chuckle came from Akashi as Midorima went and landed on the 'Go to Jail' corner and with a huff payed 500k to get out. Kuroko landed on Momoi's property and paid 4 million while Kise landed on Kuroko's so she gained it back. The game continued with Murasakibara getting bankrupt next, followed by Kuroko and then Midorima, leaving Momoi, Kise and Akashi left.

"How the hell is Kise still in?"

"Because I was smart and bought the properties that people were most likely going to land on first. Thankfully, I've played this enough times to know which ones."

"Huh, that's pretty smart of you Kise."

Kise smirked at the comment and smiled smugly as he glanced over to Kagami and Aomine which made them fume. In unison, the hot-headed duo turned to Akashi and said, 'Crush him'. The game seemed to go on endlessly before the ones who had lost already got bored.

"Let's just say Akashi won already. This game is never going to end."

"I agree."

"What?! No, I could win."

"Shut up Kise! No one cares."

Kise growled at Aomine who snarled back. Then, the lights went out. There was a collective scream, Kise's being the loudest, before Kuroko turned on the flashlight on her phone and pointed it to her friends.

"Guys relax, just pull out your phone flash lights and we'll be fine. It's just a power shortage, look the entire street has gone out."

"That doesn't make us feel better Kuroko."

"Aw, is Kagami scared? Do you want someone to cuddle you and protect you?"

"I'm not scared. But Aomine is."

"You wanna die!?"

"Anyway, we should just wait for the lights to come back on. It'll be dangerous to wander around in the dark, even if we have flashlights."

Everyone agreed with Akashi as the group stayed huddled at the living room table. Kuroko decided to snuggle up against Akashi who placed a hand on her head and stroked it gently, reassuring her that he was there with her. A while seemed to pass by as the group sat in silence, unsure of how to act in this situation.

"This is boring. Let's play marco polo!"

"Eh? Are you sure you want to do that Ki-kun? Haven't you heard of the story about playing marco polo or hide and seek in the dark…on Halloween?"

Kuroko placed emphasis on 'in the dark' and immediately Kise dismissed his idea. Much to the relief of everyone, Kuroko didn't explain why it was a bad idea. They knew where it was going to head anyway.

"That's okay then. Let's pretend I never said that."

"Tetsu, I don't get why you're pretending not to be scared. I know you're scared of the dark too."

She shrugged and smirked.

"I never said I wasn't afraid."

"Heh, you're probably all smug because you're next to Akashi aren't you?"

Before either Akashi or Kuroko could answer, there was a zapping noise and the lights flickered back on.

"Yay! I thought those lights were never going to come back on."

"Same, also, do you two lovebirds mind not trying to make out when we're still here?"

Kuroko threw her slippers at Aomine who was smirking.

"For your information Dai-kun, I was just resting my head against Sei-tan's shoulder."

"Sure you were."

Akashi chuckled and sat up.

"Well, it's still rather early and I doubt any of you want to leave yet, so let's play another game."

Kuroko nodded and got up, heading over to a pile of bags next to the couch.

"But first, I have something for you guys. In these bags are a bunch of costumes and each bag has your names on them. Please wear them on. Sat-chan and I spent a very long time picking these out for you. For the rest of the night, you are to wear them."

"Great…knowing you two, you probably picked a bunch of princess costumes to make fun of us didn't you?"

Kuroko and Momoi looked at each other and shrugged.

"Who knows? Now go! Get changed. Tetsu-chan and I will get changed in the bathroom."

"We'll be in the bathroom!"

"Sure."

The two girls walked into the bathroom with their bags while the boys sauntered over and found theirs. When Aomine looked into his, he groaned.

"You have got to be kidding me."

Regardless, seeing as everyone else was wearing theirs, Aomine put his on too. Aomine was wearing a werewolf costume with a tail and ears. Kise and Kagami were pissing themselves laughing.

"The hell!? I'm not a furry!"

"AHAHA Aominecchi is a dog!"

"SHUT UP KISE. IT'S A WOLF! I'M NOT A MUTT! WHY'D TETSU AND SATSUKI DO THIS TO ME?!"

A light snigger came from Murasakibara as he sat down on the couch in his Frankenstein's monster costume which comprised of a screw going through his head and tattered olden day clothes. Kise finished putting on his costume and smiled. He liked his costume. He was wearing white and wrapped in bandages.

"Look! I'm a mummy! Don't I look so cool?"

"You look stupid."

Kise whined like a kid at the tanned werewolf who rolled his eyes.

"Midorima, why aren't you wearing on yours?"

The green haired male looked over to Akashi who was putting on the final touches to his rather dashing vampire costume. It was strange to see Akashi get so into something like this, but then again, Kuroko was the one who had put this all together.

"Because it's childish."

"Or maybe Mido-chin is embarrassed at what Kuro-chin picked for him?"

Midorima flinched and glared at Murasakibara who was peacefully munching on another packet of strangely flavoured potato chips. A chuckle came from Akashi who smiled at his friend.

"There's no harm in it Midorima. Just try it."

"Hmpf…fine. Oha-Asa said to step out of my comfort zone today anyway."

With that Midorima reached into his bag and pulled out a cloak, a staff and a wizard's hat and almost sighed with relief. At least Kuroko hadn't chosen something so outlandish like she had done for Aomine.

"What's taking those two so long?"

"Ah! Kagamicchi! You're sitting on my bandages! It's gonna come apart!"

"EH? Oh sorry. I don't get why I'm a zombie though. I don't even look like one."

"God you guys complain so much."

They turned to the hallway as Momoi and Kuroko walked out from the bathroom and laughed at the group of males sitting in the living room.

"Ha! This is even better than expected! Yay us!"

Kuroko and Momoi high fived each other. Aomine stared at his best friends and struggled to contain his awe and keep his mouth closed. Momoi was dressed as a witch with a frilly tutu and striped socks and a broom. Kuroko was dressed as a ghost with a bloody white nightgown and a long black wig that covered most of her face.

"Holy crap Kuroko! Are you trying to scare the hell out of us?"

She grinned an evil grin and shuffled quickly towards Kagami with her arms outreached, causing him to jump back in shock and fright. A howling laughter erupted from her and everyone else before Akashi came over to stop the girl.

"Alright, enough Tetsuya. Although, your choice of costume is quite interesting."

"Hmm, I like the thought that I could bring nightmares to my enemies and besides, your costumes took a lot of thought."

Aomine suddenly stood up and pointed to his costume with an annoyed expression.

"Why'd ya pick this for me? I look like a furry!"

"Look, Sat-chan and I agreed on this because we both agreed that you would look good as a werewolf. I quote 'Dai-chan can be so rude and annoying and wild like an animal!' which gave me the idea. Besides, you look cute with wolfy ears."

Aomine growled in response which caused Kuroko's grin to grow wider.

"Besides Dai-kun, I hope you all like your costumes. Let's take a picture!"

With that Kuroko and Momoi rounded up the boys and had them all stand in front of the camera. Then Momoi positioned herself in front while Kuroko turned on the camera timer, then she hurried over before there was a flash and a click. The two girls rushed over to have a look at the photo. They both grinned and stood up to show the boys. The night ended with the group clutching their stomachs at each other's charades and fatigue starting to sink in.

"You guys might as well stay over since you're probably too scared to walk home tonight huh?"

The silence was all the answer she needed as she went into her spare room with Akashi and grabbed some futons and blankets and carried them out to the living room.

"Thanks Sei-tan."

She arranged them around the couch, moving the table to the wall.

"Okay who's taking the couch-"

Immediately Aomine jumped up and shoved Kagami, who was sitting there, off onto the floor with a thud.

"Mine now."

"Asshole!"

"I was joking, the couch belongs to Sat-chan. You are all sleeping on the futons, so shuffle over so you can make room for yourself."

"Where are you sleeping Kuroko? Your room?"

Kuroko laughed.

"Of course not. What's the fun in that? Besides, it'll be like the old days."

The group agreed, changing out of their costumes and everyone began to hunker down, though Kuroko knew no one was going to be sleeping yet. The group continued to chatter away, laughing and teasing each other about the years that had passed, reminiscing about when they first met and especially about their first year of high school, the year that changed everything.

"You guess were assholes though."

"Kagami, that's not nice. You aren't wrong though…besides, you weren't any better the first time we meet. You told me to stop playing basketball because I had no skill."

Even in the dark, Kuroko could see Kagami blush and get all flustered but she waved it off and laughed. Out of everyone here, Kagami or Midorima were the best ones to tease.

"Everyone has changed, except Mido-kun. He's practically the same."

"Hmpf…"

"Lol, the horoscope freak is embarrassed."

"Shut up Aomine."

"It was a compliment Mido-kun!"

"No it wasn't. Tetsu, don't lie."

Kuroko tossed her pillow at where Aomine would have been and heard him laugh.

"Ahh, in all seriousness, we should thank you Tetsuya for all your efforts. If she hadn't tried so hard to bring us all back, we wouldn't be here now."

"Woah, that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me!"

She said with mock shock and then poked Akashi's cheek. He pinched her nose in response and she squirmed away, bumping into Murasakibara. He groaned and rolled over, his back facing the girl. There was soft snoring coming from the couch and everyone realised that Momoi was probably sleeping.

"Alright, Sat-chan is sleeping, so we should keep it down."

"Ow! Aominecchi! You kicked me!"

"Shut it Kise. You're so loud."

"Urgh, both of you shut it. I wanna sleep."

"why are you getting involved you scrub?"

"You wanna go!?"

Kuroko looked at Akashi and rolled her eyes, whispering to him.

"They never change do they?"

Akashi let out a quiet chuckle as he stroked the blunette's head.

"No, they don't. I could say the same about you though Tetsuya."

"Ditto."

"Urgh, you two get a room."

Kuroko's head whipped around to Aomine with a teasing snarl.

"I could easily keep you from sleeping tonight Dai-kun. You'll be too scared to."

"Don't you dare Tetsu."

"Yeah, no more ghost stories Kurokocchi. Aominecchi won't be the only not able to sleep."

"I was teasing. I'm not that cruel."

There was an awkward silence before Kagami and Aomine snorted in unison. There was quiet laughter and Kuroko debated scaring him but then Akashi took care of it instead.

"Shall I show you what cruelty is Aomine?"

"Wow, those two are ganging up on me!"

"Deserved it. Now I want to go sleep so everyone be quiet."

With that, the silence was once again present and yet Kuroko could not fall asleep. Akashi had fallen asleep, his chest rising and falling with every breath and Kuroko felt calm next to him and listening to his breathing, she soon fell asleep too. Aomine was dozing off when he heard a soft thudding noise. It sounded like quiet footsteps. He tensed as he continued to listen, his body frozen and he was unable to turn around to look. It was coming from the direction of the kitchen. Then it stopped and a deep chill ran down his spine.

Oh shit. Now, I've gone and scared myself. This is actual karma. DAMN YOU TETSU!

A dark shadow stood in front of him, watching. Aomine never thought he would ever see a ghost. Fear constricted him like a python, squeezing tighter and tighter the more he breathed. The figure seemed curious as it approached closer, and he grew even more tense.

Ah fuck, don't get any closer. No, no, no, no…

Then it moved. It glided across the floor, heading towards the girls. Momoi made a soft whimpering noise and Aomine felt angry that it had targeted the most vulnerable person. This ghost had no idea what she was messing with. Momoi began to sob and Aomine assumed that Momoi had seen it.

"Te-tetsu-chan? D-dai-chan? Any…one? Help….please….i-I'm sc-scared."

No one responded and the girl continued to sob.

Please body! MOVE! MOVVVEEEE! FUCCCKK!

Suddenly Aomine heard Kuroko's voice. She screamed

"PISS OFF! STOP ANNOYING MY FRIENDS!"

This broke Aomine from his paralysis and he jolted up, turning around to see Akashi bolt upwards.

"Tetsuya?... What's wrong?"

He placed a hand on her head as she got up, she looked stressed as she ran her hand through her hair and groaned.

"Oh sorry, did I wake you?"

"what happened?"

"Did you see it too Tetsu? Fuck. Do you see it often?"

"Let's not talk about it. I don't want to scare you more than you already you are. Ah! Sat-chan! Are you okay?"

"Did you see it Tetsu-chan? Did you!?"

Aomine couldn't stop the shiver that ran down his spine. So he really saw it. It wasn't some delusion.

"I saw a girl. She came from the kitchen area and then she fucking came up to me. Then she saw Sat-chan and decided to torment her. That's when I got super pissed at it and tried to move my body but I couldn't. Then I heard you curse at it."

Everyone's face blanched.

"I think she's gone now. Since I basically told her to fuck off."

Kuroko nodded at Aomine but she could see that everyone was still feeling uneasy, so she ran into her kitchen and grabbed a bag of salt and started to spray it everywhere.

"BEGONE SPIRIT! THIS IS MY HOUSE AND MY FRIENDS! GO BACK TO HELL!"

"Ah Kuroko!"

"Kurokocchi!?"

"TETSU stop! What the hell are you doing?"

She ignored him and threw salt everywhere before putting down the empty bag of salt and smiled.

"There, all done. Anyway, let's all go back to sleep."

"yeah, ain't nobody going back to sleep after that."

"Hmm except for Mido-kun and Mura-kun. They're still asleep."

She pointed to the two boys were so deep in sleep, they didn't even stir. They were literally like logs. With that, those who were still awake huddled together, hoping that the ghost really was gone now and that all of it was just a delusion. Thankfully, the rest of the night was peaceful and everyone managed to get some sleep. In the morning, after breakfast was made, everyone began to leave, it seemed like they were still shaken from the experience and wanted to leave as soon as possible. It was a very pleasant Halloween, despite the night scare, but at least it was memorable.

"Thanks for hosting!"

Everyone smiled as they left the building, heading home. Akashi remained behind, waiting for his driver to pick him up.

"Will you be alright at home alone?"

"I'm pretty tough, I'll be fine."

Akashi smiled in response as his driver pulled up and he began to head towards the car. Kuroko rushed over and placed a quick kiss on his cheek, her face slightly pink. Akashi placed a kiss on her forehead and was gone. Kuroko sighed and walked back into her house. She grabbed the broom and began to sweep up the salt that she had showered her home with.

"So, how was my performance Tetsuya?"

She giggled and looked up at her brother, who was standing in the hallway with a white night gown and the long black wig.

"Not bad Hibiki Oni-san! I was expecting more though."

"Listen, I tried. But that tanned kid is scary okay. Especially when he was staring straight at me like he wanted to kill me. Besides, he was surrounded by the tiger and the blondie."

"Whatever. Anyway, thanks for the hard work!"

"No worries! Anything for my cutie pie! Besides, your acting was pretty good too. Let's do it again next year. Next time, I'll scare them so bad, they'll run out the house and never come back. I don't want my angel to be around boys. Men are wolves, remember that!"

"Yeah, yeah. That includes you too right?"

Hibiki got flustered and began to wave his arms around to try and explain that he was the exception. Kuroko rolled her eyes and tossed him the broom.

"Come one Oni-san. Let's get sweeping. The floors aren't going to clean themselves."

"This is your fault for being so extra."

"Whatever, it wouldn't have happened if you had done your job properly. But it was funny to see their expressions. We're definitely doing this again next year."

HIbiki and Kuroko high fived each other and smiled as they dreamt of what adventures they would have next Halloween.
