~Opposites~
*Written for InuKag Week 2019 over on Tumblr
She was the opposite of everything he'd believed his whole life. Humans were cruel, unaccepting. Humans would just as soon slay you as look at you. Even… even when they seemed compassionate, someone you could relate to, it was all a lie, and you wound up stuck to a tree before a "why" could ever pass your lips. Humans couldn't be trusted, and he didn't need them.
But then this one showed up and set his world on its head. She was kind, she was caring, she put his needs above her own time and time again like it was a normal thing to do. Instead of fearing him, she faced him fearlessly. When the villagers turned away, she took his hand and smiled and pulled him even closer. With each enemy who became a friend from her gentle encouragement, his once gray life of solitude became a little brighter. She was weird, she was crazy, she was an angel happily visiting hell, and almost from the beginning he trusted her like he'd never trusted anyone before.
He was the opposite of everything she'd expected in life. After junior high would be high school, after high school university, and after university her life would settle into comfortable stability like everyone else she'd ever known. She'd dreamed of finding the perfect man, someone to cherish her, treat her like royalty, like she and all the other girls her age had talked about since they were tiny. Her life would be normal, and she didn't want anything else.
But then she fell down a well at fifteen and broke a spell on a boy who would turn her world upside down. He wasn't sweet and stable: he was coarse and cranky and far more broken than any person deserved to be. Instead of giving her flowers, he gave her his robe to keep her safe. When the fire burned low and their friends were asleep, he held her close for warmth and let that stubborn guard drop for just a few hours. With each guilty look he gave as his past came calling with ghostly white serpents, her once bright dreams became a little tarnished. He was rude, he was impossible, he was a glorious knight in red fire-rat, and almost from the beginning she decided there was nowhere else she'd rather be than at his side.
*Author's Note:
Short and sweet - it was meant to be sort of repetitive and reflexive: like Kagome's half echoes Inuyasha's half, and they follow the same pattern. Just trying to put all that AP English crap I learned about poetic form to use (loooool yeah right I've forgotten everything)
Also, I know Kagome's part is kinda... sad, and believe me, I KNOOOOW dog-boy is way better and treats her way better than is mentioned here, but the point was to show opposites, and in this case it's opposite of what Kagome would have expected from a normal life in the modern era. I 1000000% believe she and Inuyasha are absolutely happy and in love (yes they do still argue) but let's not pretend it was all sunshine and roses and that Kagome didn't make sacrifices. She was an angel in the hell-hole that was Inuyasha's life, but things were going pretty great for Kagome before he came along. I think she knows greater joy now than she would have, but that's only because she also knows greater pain.
Anyways... enough of my soap box. See you next drabble!
