"They're gonna clean up your looks with all the lies in the books to make a citizen out of you. Because they sleep with a gun and keep an eye on you, son, so they can watch all the things you do." [Teenagers]
Life worked in mysterious ways.
To say that he was afraid was an understatement.
On all aspect, Sawada Tsunayoshi was a certified goody-two shoes. In all of his fourteen years of existence the boy lived a normal life. He followed the rules like any good citizen would. He helped the elderlies carry their heavy bags and even goes as far as carrying them on his back. And even though he's the constant center of bullying in his class, Sawada Tsunayoshi never fought back.
Ah yes, to put it simply he's someone you could call a "good person".
So just the fact that he was sitting in this God forsaken classroom was a huge mystery to him. He was petrified, he was shaking in his seat, his heart was impossibly ramming hard in his chest, and his hands had gone clammy.
How did this ever happen to me? He wanted to ask. He wanted to scream. he wanted to cry, and most importantly, he wanted to run. But he knows better than to do so.
Not in the place anyway.
CRASH!
Flinching, the boy willed himself to turn and see the source of the sound. There on the ground just behind him was a masculine man. He was groaning and holding his bloodied nose with his hand. Tsuna couldn't help but cringe at the obvious pain the man was in. Before him, a boy stood and looked way too confused for his own good. He swung the baseball bat he's holding on his shoulder before a goofy and apologetic grin made its way to his face.
"Sorry about that," he said. "I swear I didn't see you come." Then he proceeded to laugh and scratched his head.
'Lies, you're obviously lying.' Tsuna thought. He didn't hear the entire exchange but him hitting that man was nowhere near accidental. The boy vividly remembered how the man approached the other and how he got fed up a minute later when he got ignored. The man asked for a fight and Tsuna was more than sure that he slammed his bat on the man's face on purpose.
"You son of a bitch!" He roared once he regained his footing. The boy's only response was to tilt his head to the side and look even more confused. On normal circumstances, one might even consider it cute but this was no normal circumstances and Tsuna felt his blood ran cold when the man lunged forward. "I'll kill you!" He screamed.
He clenched his fist and his eyes mirrored nothing but the pure intent to kill.
In a matter of seconds, another resounding crack echoed within the four walls of the rundown classroom they're in. The only problem was that the man wasn't the one who caused the blood curling sound.
Tsuna gaped in horror as the boy effortlessly evaded the man's attack and swung his bat directly to his jaw. It knocked him over immediately but he wasn't done yet. Before the man could fall to his knees, the boy wasted no time and kicked him on his stomach which sent him directly flying toward the window. Tsuna's breath hitched when the hundred pound beast made contact with the glass. The thing shattered in pieces upon impact and he was thrown right outside.
He didn't know what urge came to him but Tsuna hurriedly stood up from his seat and rushed straight to the window.
It was one of the biggest mistakes he had ever done.
The image of that man falling from the floor of the building they're in—with his eyes opened wide, blood gushing out of his nose, and one hand reaching out for him—will forever be engraved in his mind. To made matters worse, a long glass shard lodged itself on his neck just as he fell down.
'H-he's dead…' He thought of the obvious before flinching when he felt the man's killer stood beside him.
He stared at the ground with that smile still on his face but it didn't reached his eyes. There was something cold and unreadable in it that Tsuna felt a shiver ran down his spine. His attention then shifted to Tsuna and the boy's directed his carefree grin toward him. It was such an innocent expression that Tsuna couldn't help but fear him more because of it.
"My bad," The boy simply said before he went back to his seat.
It took Tsuna's all and not puke his guts.
The strangest part of it all was instead of fearing him, a group of kids went straight to his seat and complimented the boy for what he'd done. They spook as if he was some professional athlete who scored a goal and not a murderer who just ended a person's life like it's nothing. One even swooned on how amazing it was that he was able to kill him so easily, to which the boy's only response was to smile sheepishly.
Tsuna could only stagger back to his seat.
"Show off," he heard the boy sitting in front of him grumbled just as Tsuna flopped down.
Yet again another guy whose entire facade screamed trouble.
He looked foreign, that Tsuna coul tell. With his pierced ears and improper way of wearing the uniform given to them, he looked more like the delinquents in his school. But seeing that he's in this classroom together with that baseball bat wielding psycho, he's probably more dangerous than any conventional delinquents back in his old high school.
Most likely noticing his ogling, the other boy looked behind his shoulder and gave Tsuna the angriest glare he's seen. "What the fuck are you looking at?" He snarled.
"N-nothing…" Tsuna managed to reply and proceeded to look down on his open palm.
It's by then the sliding door finally opened and a tall man in a suit wearing a fedora on top of his head walked in. He stopped midway when he noticed the disarray the place was in. He gave the broken window a glance before he opened the notebook he was holding and crossed something in it. "Honestly, it's still so early in the morning and these kids are already causing troubles." He murmured more to himself.
Then he smirked.
"Good morning, murderers." He greeted and fully entered the room. Then let his eyes roam inside the classroom before it fell straight onto Tsuna's. In turn, the boy froze and felt a trickle of sweat fell down from his forehead.
He knew what the man was indicating and God knows he's wrong!
…He's wrong…
"You're wrong!" Was what he wanted to scream but no words was coming out of his mouth. "You're wrong! I didn't do it… I swear I didn't do it…" Tsuna bit his quivering lower lip and let his head hang low. The feeling of betrayal, guilt, and confusion all came rushing in and it was getting overwhelming. It was taking him a tremendous amount of self-control to not cry.
"First and foremost, my name is Reborn." The man introduced. "I will be your advisor for the span of four years. Seeing that we are going to be stuck with each for that long, I hope we all get along." He added with an unsettling smile plastered on his face. "Now, onto the real thing: the reason why you all are here. Consider this as your orientation."
When nobody said a word, Reborn resumed.
"The Amano Akira Academy is an institution that takes in murderers who are still too young to be in jail. In other words; you kids." He smiled quizzically. "The school is situated on an island heavily guarded by soldiers recruited from all around the globe. That means that if any of you gets the big idea of escaping this place, I assure you that they will not hesitate on gunning you down before you even manage to touch the sea." Reborn then proceeded to smirk.
Strange enough, none of the students appeared to be frightened by the information. No one except for the brunette who sat in the middle of the classroom.
"Now, you might think that this is kind of imprisoning you in a sense but I assure you that's not the case," He said before he started to walk around the room. "You can think of it as more of rehabilitation. Over the course of four years, I and the rest of the advisors within this institution will teach you how to be a proper citizen of the society again." Reborn kept his smirk when he neared the boy who murdered their classmate earlier. Instead of getting intimidated, the boy simply smiled obliviously and Tsuna was more than sure that he was indeed a psycho. "We will relieve you of your uncontrollable thirst for blood."
"We, to be more precise, are going to give you second chances in life." Then he tipped his fedora down, successfully hiding his other eye in view. "The real question is if you're still alive then." And the man chuckled. The sound was enough to bring a shiver down Tsuna's spine.
"I want to go home." The boy murmured to himself.
"So!" Reborn clapped his other hand on the notebook he's holding. "Why don't we start with everything by introducing yourselves? But you must do it with a twist." The man then proceeded to flip open his note, this time going through the student's information. "You have to state your name, age, hobbies, and lastly… Your kill counts."
At that the classroom erupts in murmurs while Tsuna froze again.
'Kill counts?! B-but I don't have any!' The boy swallowed thickly. 'Then what should I say? Surely I can't tell the truth, can I? Wait, maybe I can! In that way they might release me! Y-yeah… they might.'
"Alright, let's start with the girl on the left of the front row." Reborn said and choose to stand at the back of the room.
Said girl cheerfully springs up and skipped to front. Her ponytail bounced with every step she took and Tsuna noted how her face seemed to be fixed in a happy grin.
"Hello, hello!" She started while waving happily at everyone. "Name's Miura Haru! Fourteen years and Haru loves to cosplay and Haru can sew too! Oh, and kill counts…" She then raised one hand and proceeded to count before folding her pinky and forefinger. "Kill count is three! Please take good care of Haru!" Her aura was practically sparkling which dumbfounded Tsuna even further.
For starters, Haru looked completely harmless! No one will suspect that the girl has three bodies in her wake.
"Good," Reborn tapped his pen on his note in satisfaction. "Next."
A boy who was wearing a white fedora stood up when Haru was back to her seat. Tsuna noted how he resembles some of those sleazy seniors who always teased him with any given chance. "My name's Katou Julie, fifteen years old," he started with an unreadable smile. "My hobbies? Well, let's just say that they include dead naked girls. Kill counts: six."
A dead silence followed after that. Everyone's reaction varied but it was noticeable how most of the girls were looking at him coldly. Despite of this, Julie didn't seemed to mind. Instead, he appeared to be enjoying the attention.
Reborn simply nodded and motioned to the next student to do their introduction.
Over the course of it, it's proven more and more to Tsuna just how much of a dangerous place this was. While nobody have beaten Julie's body count so far, he had an intuition that the worst of them all haven't revealed itself yet. And when the person in front him finally stood up, his suspicion was then proven to be true.
"Gokudera Hayato," he grumpily started. The boy with the silver hair had both of hands in his pockets and stood tall and proud. He was clearly showing everyone his superiority. "Fifteen, my hobby is dynamite fishing and kill counts? Ten."
As impossible as it may be, most of them seemed to stop breathing. While Tsuna was kind of skeptical about the dynamite fishing part, that was least of his concern. This person has killed ten people! Ten! Ten was way too much. Just thinking about it was making him even more determined to stay as far away from this Gokudera person.
"Ah, yes. You're that terrorist who has been recently caught." Reborn commented without looking up from his notebook. He didn't look the slightest bit fazed by Gokudera's confession and Tsuna couldn't help but wonder just how dangerous the man was. It was nothing but morbid curiosity and he was quick to push the idea aside.
The person who stood next was none other than the boy who murdered one of their classmates in cold blood.
He left his bloodied bat near his chair and walked to the front, that innocence and obliviousness glint was still in his eyes. It was downright terrifying. "Hello! My name is Yamamoto Takeshi. Fifteen years old, my hobby includes playing baseball and practicing kendo. And kill counts was it? I think it was nine." He laughed sheepishly and scratched his head, embarrassed by how he had forgotten the exact number.
'Shit, shit, shit!' Screamed Tsuna in his head.
"Make that ten, boy." Reborn then motioned to the broken window. Yamamoto merely laughed and corrected himself.
It's now his turn, Tsuna realized but he was still frozen in his place.
No matter what he did he just couldn't shaking. His hands had gotten clammy and a mortified expression was fixed on his face. He can't do this! He DOESN'T know how to do this!
If he'll go upfront and introduce himself then he have to say the number of people he was accused of killing! No! It was too much! Saying such number after Gokudera and Yamamoto was a straight up death flag! He just can't… But he also realized that if he says he hasn't killed a single soul then he's life would equally be in danger.
There was no escaping this. No matter where he looked, he was definitely trapped.
"Hey, you're next." Behind him, a classmate poked him with what he hoped was a tip of pen and not a knife.
Tsuna swallowed the lump that formed in his throat and finally stood up. He was shaking but he managed to get to the front without tripping and make a huge fool out of himself.
Finally, Sawada Tsunayoshi got a better look of his classmates. Most of them looked so young. They were at the same age as him as they've confessed. They don't look any different from his classmates and schoolmates in his old school. Even that muscular man from earlier was probably just around their age as well. But even still, each and every one of them has killed a person at some point.
And the most terrifying part of it all?
It was the fact none of them look the slightest bit remorseful.
"My name is S-sawada Tsunayoshi…" He stammered and tried his best to avoid any eye contact of sort. "I'm f-fourteen… My hobby… My hobby is reading. Ki-kill counts…" He swallowed thickly and he was visibly shaken. He knew that's not a good sign. If normal bullies were to target him, he would've probably survive. but not this type of bullies. Never with them. "Kill count is o-one…" He finally said.
He finally lied.
Everyone went silent. It was very obvious that the've been expecting him to have such a measly kill count. It's even safe to say that some of them were thinking that he probably accidentally killed that person.
… That's until someone chuckled from the corner of the room. Reborn shook his head and appeared to be quite amused before sauntering to where Tsuna was standing.
"There's no need to be modest about your kill count, Sawada." The man flipped the page of his notebook and stopped when he reached the boy's information. He then smirked. "Sawada Tsunayoshi, an only child, fourteen years old, prone to bullying but is quite helpful to those anyone in need." He read as he stopped right in front of the horrified boy.
"Body count…" Reborn's smirk morphed into a devious smile.
'No…' Tsuna wanted to say as his eyes went wide and never leaves the man's mouth when it starts to move.
'I didn't do it!'
'Stop!'
'I-it wasn't me!'
"Twenty nine…" And he swore the room's temperature drops exceedingly low.
'I didn't do it…'
