AN: I made a note in "Master of His Fate" that all of the 72 Pillars are named after the 72 Demons of the Lesser Key of Solomon. This remains truth as far as I know. However, in DxD a good portion of those Pillar Houses were already long gone, leaving plenty of potential openings to bring back a balance to the inevitable power vacuum. The Namikaze, Ginjo, Uchiha, Uzumaki, Yamanaka, Shimura, and Haruno families of this story are some of those who were granted one of those positions. I have gone back to previous chapters to fix that.
Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, High School DxD or Bleach. So you lawyers out there can all go away now.
Chapter 07: TIME SKIP!
Namikaze-Ginjo Naruto, scion and Heir to the Namikaze and Ginjo families of the 72 Pillars of the Underworld, was bored. This was fairly common for him these days, considering he was currently sitting in a classroom in a human school, listening to a teacher drone on about things he couldn't care less about if he tried, while staring out the window to his left.
Shortly after his return from visiting the Uzumaki, he and Kushina had been sent to the human world to cultivate their own power bases and build up more contracts. Each of the families had their staked territories in the human world, and it just so happened that the Namikaze and Ginjo families shared the British Isles, which includes Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, and nearly six thousand small islets that were, for the most part, uninhabited. Or so he hoped. He had asked Soifon to do a preliminary recon of the territory, and now, two years later, she still wasn't done. She might be purposely dragging out her investigation, but he rather doubted that as it would take away from her time near her "Yoruichi-sama".
I think I may have to actually order her to return just to get an update. This is getting ridiculous. He thought as he stared out the window some more. Of course, there's also the possibility that she's been doing jobs non-stop, just so Yoruichi can laze around.
... Actually, that sounds like something Soifon would do. A more dedicated servant I've rarely even heard of, let alone seen.
Naruto let out a soft sigh. "This is stupid."
"Mister Namikaze!" A woman's voice snapped at him, "would you like to enlighten the class on your views about the Greco-Roman War? I'm certain that the rest of us would be very interested in your opinion."
Right, he was in History Class at the moment. He glanced over at the owner of the voice, a rather attractive brunette woman in her late-to-mid twenties, whose bright green eyes flashed dangerously, by the name of Miss Clarise Hamilton. Her outfit was rather conservative for such an attractive woman these days, a knee-length business skirt and white turtleneck sweater, complimented by a simple pair of black women's dress shoes. Miss Hamilton was a heartthrob for many of the boys in the school, as her usual approach to any student was rather kind and very helpful. However, she didn't seem to like him very much, which probably had to do with his utter lack of regard for the church, and his continued absences from the school's near-mandatory Chapel sessions. The key point of which, in his mind, was the "near mandatory" part. As far as he was concerned, he didn't actually have to go, it just didn't give him any Brownie Points with the staff.
Never mind the fact that he had absolutely no damned clue how he ended up with his main base being inside a Protestant Christian Boarding School!
Naruto yawned, "I'm quite certain that my views on human stupidity and its continuation throughout history is well-established, Miss Hamilton. Repeating myself now would simply be beating on the long-dead horse, as it were."
She smiled thinly. It was odd how she could make such an expression still seem attractive, despite having not one whit of supernatural blood in her. "Yes, your views on such matters are indeed well-known, Mister Namikaze. Perhaps you would care to share a different view? Such as the exact subject I was just discussing?"
It was his turn to offer a smile, this one rather wry. "I am also quite certain that you are aware that I was not paying the least amount of attention to today's topic, Miss Hamilton. So you will have to forgive me for not obliging,"
"Of course, Mister Namikaze." Miss Hamilton was practically purring, "As your teacher I am always willing to forgive my students for their transgressions." Her smile twisted into one of purest pity, as though she honestly felt badly for what she was about to say. Naruto was not fooled. "Such a shame, though, that also as your teacher, I am forced to levy a disciplinary action onto you for said transgressions. Therefore, seeing as it is the weekend, I will require a fifteen page essay on the schism caused between the Greeks and Romans as a result of this war."
He blinked. This was not what he was expecting. Miss Hamilton rarely handed out essays as punishments. Actually, Naruto could not think of any other time during his stay in this school that he had even heard of her giving out an essay as punishment. That was more along the lines of the English teacher's train of thought.
"I think I'd rather clean the boy's locker room after football practice." He said with distaste.
"Yes, I'm sure you would." She replied primly, "that is why I'm not going to give you that task."
He raised an eyebrow. "And people say Lucifer is evil."
"Flattery will get you nowhere, young man."

"What was that saying I heard that one time in Canada?" Naruto muttered to himself as he sat writing a report he had no true interest in. "Oh, yes. This sucks sweaty monkey balls!"
"You have only yourself to blame, Naruto-kun," his fiance of two years said as she sat on the edge of his private desk. Kushina Uzumaki had been beautiful when he first met her, and time had truly only managed to improve upon her features in his opinion. Long flowing red hair, bright violet eyes, breath-stealing smile, all combined in a well-proportioned frame that was just a few shades shy of being termed over-ripe. In short, she was pretty much the poster-girl for young female devils.
"I can't help it! Human history is much like our own! Filled with repetitive stupidity from the get-go!" He snarled and slammed his fist into the desktop.
"Yes," Kushina replied calmly, "I know. You've said as much. Many times. And I've probably heard every possible variation by this point. And I'll tell you what I always do, that the Biblical God created them last as his supposed 'perfect' and 'chosen' people. Considering that is the same being that allowed Lucifer's jealousy and envy to reach the point of becoming the first Devil, are you really surprised just how much we emulate each other?"
Naruto gave vent to a snort of amusement. "Of course I'm not surprised by that. I am, however, flabbergasted that neither of our respective races seems capable of learning from those repeated mistakes."
Kushina hummed in thought for a moment, "I suppose I have to give you that one."
"Thank you."
"Now that you've won that debate, perhaps you should concentrate on your paper?" She teased.
He sighed heavily. "I guess I really should. Despite her obvious devotion to that asswipe in Heaven, Miss Hamilton is a true teacher, and I would hate to stain her reputation. Daydreaming in class notwithstanding."
Kushina's head tilted in question, "what do you mean, 'true teacher'?"
Naruto leaned back in his chair, his hands coming to rest clasped in front of his chest as his elbows came to rest upon the arms of the chair. "It means exactly what it says. There are many people these days who claim the title of 'teacher', but only care about the money it makes them. Miss Hamilton comes from old money, however, and goes out of her way to give the best aid she can to any student who asks. I have actually heard of her making a weekend trip to Edinburg, Scotland, just to acquire a number old texts so she could give the very best answer she could to a question asked by a final-year student. I have also witnessed her reading in the library, on the subject of mental disorders, simply because she was unfamiliar with the concept."*
He paused for a moment, before an honest smile crawled onto his lips, "She is here, teaching, because she truly enjoys it and wants to help others learn. That, my darling Kushina, is what I mean when say she is a true teacher."
"Even though she's a complete, die-hard Christian?" Kushina asked, her eyes wide with surprise. She had never heard Naruto talk like this about anyone before, save his dead mother. He sounded honestly admiring of the young teacher.
"Yes." Naruto replied firmly. "In fact, if there were more Christians like her... well, the Church would be much less reviled by the masses. In my opinion, as a relatively neutral devil, she embodies what I believe the religion was meant to show. Dare I say it, a true Saint?"
"Really?" Kushina's surprise was understandable. Saints were rare in any Age, let alone the modern one. Certainly the Vatican had had that young nun, but she had been excommunicated for daring to heal a devil without knowing what they were.
A thought occurred to her, "do you think she knows about us? You know, that we're devils?"
Naruto continued to recline in his chair, but his face took on a thoughtful expression. "It is not impossible, I suppose. It would certainly give a better reason for why she seems to dislike me, save that she seems to still love you."
Kushina giggled. "That might be because I pay attention in class, Naruto-kun."
"Ah, is this a bad time?" A male voice interrupted.
Looking up, past Kushina, Naruto saw a tall, red-haired man with an awkward smile on his face, and flanked by a silver-haired maid.
"Sirzechs Lucifer-sama," Naruto said, quickly rising to stand, Kushina rapidly following suit. They were waved back t his seat after a moment, satisfying proprieties. "What brings you here, sir?"
"I thought I might cash in on that favor you owe me." He glanced uneasily at Kushina, "but if this is a bad time, I could come back later?"
Naruto caught the man's glance, and frowned in worry. "Not at all, but I'd prefer to have Kushina's company in any case."
Sirzechs fidgeted briefly, before sighing. This was not going to end well for him. He just knew it. Grayfia had even warned him about it.
A few moments later, the entire school heard the identical incredulous and pissed-off shouts of, "YOU WANT HIM/ME TO DO WHAT?!" Followed by a hearty -read: heavy and loud- slap.
Sirzechs found himself on his ass, rubbing a sore left cheek that had a clearly defined hand-print on it. "Okay, that went a lot smoother in my mind."
"Naruto-sama, Kushina-sama, if I may? I believe Lucifer-sama's words may have been misleading," Grayfia said, shooting her husband a scathing look that told him he wasn't going to be getting any loving for quite some time.
"Grayfia-san, if you can explain better than his, 'I want to use the favor you owe me to get you to save my sister from her arranged marriage,' I implore you to do so," Kushina said icily.
Time for a political lesson! For Naruto to save Sirzechs' sister from a binding contract he would need to have either greater political pull, which meant be higher up the food chain than either participant in the Underworld hierarchy, or he would have to challenge the current intended groom for his place in the contract. The first one was not going to happen as both the Namikaze and Ginjo families came to the Pillars after some of the original Houses were obliterated, unlike the Phenex Family, from whom said 'current intended groom' hailed. The second was therefore the only choice, but to do so it meant that Naruto would be taking the Phenex's place, and would then be forced to wed Rias. However, Naruto already had two intended fiance's, which was his maximum number given the two-house-heir rule.
Now some would probably say that Naruto could simply challenge the Phenex member, beat his ass, and then dissolve the contract, right? Wrong. Because there was no dissolution clause, it could not be declared null. And everyone in the Underworld knew there was no dissolution clause. Riser Phenex, the asswipe in question, had been bragging about it for nearly a decade.
The only other possible method to get Rias out of her situation was if she challenged Riser to a Rating Game and won, or for one of her Pieces to challenge the man to single combat, and win. Always there was that 'win' factor. They couldn't simply give a good showing. Devils were proud beings, and despite centuries of being civilized they were still great believers in the ancient rule of Survival of the Fittest. Only the winner would be allowed to dictate terms.
The problem with the last two mentioned ideas was that they had been used already. Rias had challenged Riser for her freedom, and lost. Then one of her Pieces had challenged him, her only Pawn, and lost. The victory party had already been had, and now it was only a matter of days before Rias would be stuck with a horrible excuse for devil to call a husband.
Grayfia paused in thought for a moment or twenty. Followed by more thought as she tried, failing desperately, to think of another way to phrase her King and husband's statement. One could almost see the relief in her features as the proverbial lightbulb turned on.
"With so many traditions being challenged, the idea of a marriage contract without an ending clause is incredibly outdated. Naruto-sama could simply challenge the contract's validity, instead of the participants."
Naruto and Kushina blinked, looked at each other and blinked again. Naruto slowly looked at Grayfia with more than a little suspicion as he asked, "so what you are saying, is that I should challenge Lord Gremory and Lord Phenex to prove they had the right to create a contract that has no ending clause?"
"Yes."
"I see." He nodded several times before bursting out screaming, "DO YOU THINK ME SUICIDAL?!"
"Eh?"
He deadpanned at them, "challenge Lords Gremory and Phenex, two men who fought beside my own parents in both the Great War and the Civil War, for their right to create and enforce a contract?! Do you hear yourself? Just how stupid do you think I am?"
"You could make it a Rating Game?" Sirzechs suggested nervously.
Naruto opened his mouth to scream at him some more, then stopped. He looked thoughtful, before his face fell as flat as his tone. "You want me to unleash Zaraki on them and their Peerages?"
"Kinda, yeah." Sirzechs shrugged, "I mean, he scares me, so he should be able to freak those two right out."
"I should let Soifon at you for this idea of yours."
"Please don't."
"I'm especially considering telling her it was your idea that kept her away from Yoruichi for so long..." Kushina said, picking up the thread from Naruto.
"Hey!" Sirzechs exclaimed, a little bit of panic setting in, "That's not funny!"
Naruto and Kushina both raised an eyebrow at the man, then spoke in sync, "who said we were joking?"
The man shuddered, "it's creepy how you two do that. Just how in sync can two people be?"
"Apparently, this much," they responded together. "Now, listen. Just last month we made it official that my/Naruto-kun's second bride will be Tier. We defy you to tell her that she has to be dropped just because the Lucifer's sister is in trouble."
"No," Sirzechs said resolutely with all the dignity and authority of one of the Four Demon Lords, "I do not have a death wish."
"Well... there is another option..." Grayfia tendered quietly, and consequently felt nervous when all eyes fell on her, waiting for her to continue. "If there is no groom, there can obviously be no wedding..."
The other three blinked at her, before three jaws fell. Was she suggesting what they each thought she was?
Naruto recovered first, and with an awkward clearing of his throat he voiced their question. "Grayfia-san, are you suggesting I outright assassinate Riser Phenex?"
"No, of course not," she replied quickly, and Naruto sighed in relief, "I'm suggesting you use the power of that sword you got two years ago to remove what makes him qualified to be the groom."
Naruto blinked. Sirzechs blinked. Kushina gained a wicked grin.
"Huh?"
"She means, Naruto-kun," Kushina began, her tone filled with mischief and malice, "that you could use your powers to completely remove Riser from even being a candidate for the marriage."
Sirzechs' face paled, his mind painting only one picture. In contrast, Naruto gained a thoughtful look. One hand rose to cup his chin and brush at an imaginary beard as three different ideas occurred to him.
Note to Self: grow a beard in the future. Maybe make it a goatee.
"Yeah, I can do that," Naruto stated blithely.

"You know, Grayfia-chan, if he gets caught I could end up in enormous trouble." Sirzechs mused as he and his Queen made their way off the school grounds. They could have transported straight from Naruto's office after the conversation was done, but Sirzechs felt the presence of Purity, and became curious. Grayfia, long used to her King's random ideas, had dimply decided that arguing wasn't worth it. Their walk led them here, near the front gates of the boarding school, where an impromptu car awaited them.
Grayfia raised an eyebrow at his statement, though. "You are saying that the most likely person behind the Touji Mizuki case, and various others over the years, would be sloppy enough to get himself caught? In case you have forgotten, Sirzechs-sama, we still don't have any real evidence outside of that which is circumstantial. I highly doubt that even though you are technically hiring him, that he will be caught."
"Perhaps," Sirzechs murmured, then shifted his attention to the shadows beside the gate. "What do you think, Paladin of the Church?"
A young woman slowly came into the light. Business skirt and white turtleneck coming into view before the long brown hair and eyes. She stood in the circle of light provided by an overhead light, arms crossed lightly under her bust, a blank expression on her face. "Oh? I thought I was rather well-hidden. Though I suppose that I would need to do much better to hide from one of the Demon Lords."
Sirzechs smiled thinly, "yes, I suppose so. And?"
The woman smiled, "if you're worried about me, don't be. I really am here just as a teacher. Though I will admit that we have noticed an increase in devil activity hereabouts, we, the Protestant Church, have no intention of doing anything. You could say we have adopted something of a 'live and let live' policy. So long as there are no overt movements, we will not do anything."
"Ah, no. I wasn't worried about that," he said, a sheepish grin forming at her surprised expression. "I know you were listening in, and I honestly wanted your opinion."
"Hm? Oh, you mean hiring Naruto Namikaze to do something potentially devastating to your career if it was found out?" He nodded, and she grinned in amusement, "I think your concern is unwarranted. I wasn't even sure until just now that he was a devil."
Sirzechs jerked in shock. She hadn't known?! "You mean Naruto had managed to fool a Paladin?!"
She frowned, "yes. I can only say that it is probably because he is the most... human devil I have ever met. He doesn't act like most devils do, he acts like any human teenage boy. That, more than anything I think, makes him suited to whatever task you have asked of him. He'll go about it in a way that no devil would think of."
Sirzechs blinked. He seemed to be getting surprised a great deal today. "Well, it's rare for a devil of any variety to get such high praise from a knowledgeable member of the Church, let alone a Paladin, so I find myself believing that he will accomplish this task."
The woman's frown cleared, and an impish smile formed in its place. "As long as he finished that homework assignment."
Cue sweatdrop. "Ah, I do believe I saw some kind of written report sitting on his desk. Looked fairly extensive, right, Grayfia?
The maid-dressed woman nodded. "Yes, Sirzechs-sama. It seemed to be a seventeen page report on the Greco-Roman War and its ramifications."
A soft smile appeared on the teacher's face, "ah, so he went above what I asked for, did he? Such an earnest young man."
More blinking on the behalf of the two devils. That made two full praises that young Naruto had received from this woman.
No pun intended, but... WHAT THE HELL?! Was Sirzechs' last thought before he continued on his way to the waiting car.
"Well, this has certainly been a night for firsts," he stated as he walked past the woman. "Have a pleasant night, Miss Paladin."
"Hamilton," she said, "Clarise Hamilton. And a good night to you as well, Demon Lord, Sirzechs Lucifer."
Sirzechs spun around at the name, surprise suffusing his features yet again. He knew that name, Clarise Hamilton was perhaps the most famous of the Protestant Church's Paladins. An impressive number of supernatural beings have fallen to her blade in the short time she was active. She had supposedly vanished from the scene of one of her battles approximately one year ago, and now he finds her here as a teacher?
A grin stretched his lips, and he began to whistle a merry tune. With a watchdog like her around, it was nearly a miracle in and of itself that Naruto got any devil work done. The man wondered just how the youngster did it...

Late that same night, a tall blonde man was leaving a high-end bar, having gotten shit-face drunk. His burgundy suit jacket and pants were wrinkled heavily, as was his white dress shirt. He was just thinking about returning home from his celebratory drinking binge, which had lasted two days so far, when he felt something impact the back of his head, and he lost consciousness.
He awakened after what felt like hours, his head throbbing, and found himself bound hand and foot to a brick wall. That was all he really had time to take note of before a searing pain made itself known at the base of his skull. Blearily, he looked through pain- and drink-bleary eyes.
"You know, when I first accepted this job, I thought catching you alone would be harder," a male voice said, coming from the shadows around him. "Turns out you're actually fairly easy as a mark. I'm almost ashamed of you as a fellow devil. Almost." A pause, then the voice continued, "unfortunately for you, my opinion of you can hardly fall much further."
"Who are you?! Do you have any idea who I am?!" The blonde man screamed.
"Of course I do. You are my target, my mark. Riser Phenex." A dark chuckle followed the name, creeping the man out. "Third son of the Marquis Phenex, currently ranked in the top thirty of your age group in the Rating Games, and current fiance of one Rias of the Ducal House of Gremory."
"If you know my name, then you should know that my family will have your head for this!" He blustered, trying to bluff his way out of the situation. He couldn't feel his magic right now, and he had a feeling that the person behind this voice was the cause.
"Your family?" The voice mocked, "your family actually doesn't expect to see you until the day of your wedding to Rias Gremory. So that gives me... five more days with you. Oh, the fun I could have..."
Riser shuddered at the dark glee and anticipation within that tone. Just what kind of monster had managed to kidnap him? He didn't know, so he tried a different tactic, "If it's money you want, I can get it! If you're an assassin of any sort, you know that the Phenex members are immortal. But if you want, I could offer you more than the fool who hired you..."
He would have kept going, but the dark laughter that erupted at his offer silenced him. "Money? I'm not doing this for money! This is a favor! A request! And as a devil who specializes is killing without leaving a trail, I could hardly turn down this challenge! To kill an immortal phoenix? It will be a Masterpiece!"
Riser was getting worried. He had heard of a killer who had been terrorizing the devils, humans, yokai, fallen angels, and various others for years. The person never left any kind of calling card, save that there was no evidence as to who it could be. Perfect assassinations, even against beings that shouldn't have been able to die.
Beings like Riser himself. As a member of the Phenex family he enjoyed a level of regeneration that most would sell their mothers for, which made him practically invincible. Oh, there were ways to beat him, but the family made certain that there was no known way to actually kill one of them.
Yet this person seemed sure that they could kill him. That thought was horrifyingly uncomfortable to Riser.
As he watched, a large sword blade entered his field of vision. The blade itself was fairly unremarkable, being that of a wide claymore, but the rest of it... It seemed as the the crosspiece went through the grip instead of being the divider between blade and hilt. If he had been hoping to identify his captor at all by the hand, that hope was in vain as the hand was covered by a black glove, attached to a black sleeve.
Riser twitched, then a small, tired laugh escaped him. "You think a sword can help you? If you kill me with that, I'll just revive!"
"Not so, Riser Phenex. But I suppose words will not convince you. Very well, I will show you instead."
With those words the sword was thrust into his chest. Yet he felt no pain. He could see it clearly sticking out from him, but there was no reaction.
"Hah! Your blade doesn't even hurt!"
"The stab isn't meant to hurt you, Riser. It's to facilitate the blade's ability."
"Huh?"
Then he saw it, streams of fire red and wind green, alongside ribbons of purest black, being drawn from his body and into the sword. Then he felt it, the searing pain, as if his soul was being ripped apart. Thus did Riser Phenex, son of House Phenex, begin to scream in intolerable pain. The kind of screams one would expect to be heard only in a true vision of Hell.
The sensation didn't last long, only a few seconds, but when it was over, Riser felt drained and pathetically weak. His breathing was ragged as the sword's blade was removed from his chest. His now-scraggly hair fell into his eyes as he raised his head just enough to look at the darkness once more.
"What... did you do... to me...?" He gasped, phantom arcs of pain still lingering in his psyche.
"What I've done is kill you in two ways," the voice said solemnly. "You might remember those streams of energy flowing from you? Well red and green were your powers as a Phenex member, specifically your powers over Fire and Wind. The black were your abilities as a devil, such as your Ressurection. In short, I've now rendered you human, and your power now resides within this blade."
Horror dawned in Riser's eyes. He was no longer a Phenex, no longer a devil. He was human, weak and pathetic and ever so fragile. "NO! No, no, no, nononononono!"
"There is one last thing I must do to you, Riser the Human," the heavy sarcastic tone was not lost on Riser, even in his denial. The sword made a reappearance, this time though, he felt it physically. For the second time Riser screamed.
"You are now unable to wed that girl. I guess this will free her," the voice mused as the blade was withdrawn from it's second job of destroying Riser's ability to reproduce using his own flames. "I'm sure that both Gremory siblings will be ecstatic at the news. After all, the contract specifically made mention of you, did it not?"
Riser didn't respond. He was too exhausted from the events of the last few minutes. He never noticed when the other person's presence vanished. He didn't notice when the doors of his place of captivity opened to reveal his worried family and the Underworld's police forces hours later.
Riser, formerly of House Phenex, had withdrawn into his mind in response to the horrors of this night.

Sirzechs Lucifer stared in utter shock at the morning paper in front of him. Grayfia, behind him, simply shook her head. Whether in respect or amusement was up for debate. In their defense the headline was rather eye-catching.
RISER PHENEX BURNED!
Sirzechs slumped back into his chair. "He actually did it."
The doors to his dining room opened to admit one of his butlers, a stoic man of middling age, who was closely followed by a young blonde man. The butler cleared his throat.
"Namikaze Naruto-sama, has arrived, Sirzechs-sama. I took the liberty of bringing him straight to you." He then bowed himself out, closing the doors behind him.
"Good man there," Naruto noted with a grin. "You should probably give him a raise."
The young man seated himself with grace across from Sirzechs who still seemed somewhat in shock. So much so that he blurted out, "what are you doing here?"
Naruto raised one eyebrow, "I'm not sure what you're talking about, Sirzechs-sama." He grinned, "I thought you'd be happy about this morning's news, so I figured I'd make a social call. It's only polite after all. You did visit me yesterday."
"But why are you here?!" The redheaded man was almost hyperventilating, "people might suspect me of having something to do with this!"
"With what, exactly?" Naruto asked archly, "have you read the piece yet? They are calling it yet another of that 'phantom assassin's' work. I can assure you, I have almost two dozen witnesses that put me in the human world all night last night." He grimaced slightly, "one of whom busted me and several other guys from school at an illegal bar, and has tacked on several more pages to that report I already had to write."
Sirzechs just gaped at him. Grayfia hid her mouth, and probably a giggle or four, behind one hand. The younger devil's face at the mention of that report was just too funny!
Sirzechs just stared in dumbfounded amazement before bursting into laughter. "And they say Lucifer was evil."
Naruto smirked. "To quote a good woman, flattery will get you nowhere."
