Recognition sparked in his eyes, lips twitching as they wanted to speak, to form words- a name. A name he didn't remember but one he knew. It was confusing. He didn't- couldn't- remember those clear blue eyes, but he knew them, knew them as he knew his metal arm, every little piece of it.

His heart was racing as images of clear blue eyes, blond hair and a mischievous smirk rose unbidden to his mind. Hesitating as he raised his gun, a voice screamed in his mind, "you know him you know him you know him".

He had a mission to complete, he didn't have time for this. He was a soldier, a weapon. Soldiers didn't question orders. Weapons completed their tasks, nothing more. That was their purpose. His purpose. Blue eyes. A fiercely protective surge rose in him along with an undying unswerving loyalty. This was one mission he couldn't complete. Not today.

As he sat in that chair and gave his report, for the first time the Soldier did not tell his handlers everything. Did not mention those blue eyes that haunted him. He said those four words though, finally admitting it aloud, "but I knew him".

There was an inherent sense of wrongness as he had lifted his gun on the bridge. They said he was compromised. He didn't care anymore. Blue eyes. He was ready for the pain that would follow the words "wipe him". Expected it. Familiar with it even. He had stopped fighting a long time ago, but today... A spark. Blue eyes. For the first time in years James "Bucky" Barnes woke up and began to fight back.

Hydra was good. The best, in fact. It had prepared itself for almost every possible outcome it could think of. It wasn't enough. They could suppress memories, wipe them even, like the gods in the stories of old. But even they couldn't hope to suppress something that ran deeper than memories, for something that lingered after all physical traces of it were wiped.

They prepared for a situation in which the Soldier went rogue. When their hold over their Asset finally ended. It had most certainly ended. But not in a situation they could control. Not when both aspects of the man they controlled worked together. The Winter Soldier and Bucky, a man whose allegiance was to one man, and one man alone. The title Captain America meant nothing to either of them. The 'skinny little kid from Brooklyn', however, was the one he would follow to the ends of the world, come what may. And he was the one for whom they would fight, for his protection Hydra would have to fall, and he would be the one to bring it down.

hi... So this is like my second fic and really, you can blame this one on the cap fics I read a couple months ago and watching cap 1 recently. So I saw a tumblr post of Bucky hesitating as he raised his gun on the bridge so I added that. I'm not sure if you can read this as Stucky but it's kinda obvious that its cos of Steve that Bucky starts fighting back so yeah. From the fics I read some time back, it was kinda the general consensus that Bucky would take down Hydra so this is sort of like the decision to take it down.
