In spite of how much time has passed, I'm always surprised to see this fic is still receiving likes, favorites, and is being subscribed/followed. On occasion I see comments that make me smile and remember why I enjoyed Tokyo Ghoul.

While I don't follow Tokyo Ghoul anymore (except to read major spoilers), I wanted to satisfy the people who wanted an end to this bizarre story. It is not fully written, simply bullet points of what I had intended. Keep in mind, this story is over a year old, my outline document has long since been deleted, and I'm not in the fandom really anymore.

Here is what I had planned to fulfill this one-shot series.

Like Mother Like Son Part 2

Basically kaneki begins to become really stressed. At Sailko's request any of Hinami's belongings are to go to her and a guard leaves it with the quinx leader sasaki to give to her. He sees it on his desk and gives in and opens it. At the top is a letter to saiko saying not to judge her maman for he doesn't know how he should feel. It's like hearing your biological parent that you never met had died. It should hurt, the idea that you should be upset is there but the closeness is still missing. He will mourn in time. There's also a copy of dear Kafka or metamorphosis and Saiko's handheld. There's also her mask that has etched on the inside the date of Anteiku's fire and "Dont forget". (Saiko knows it's referencing for her to never forget that she joined aogiri to someday bring her family back together. Haise assumes she blamed him for not stopping it and tearing her family apart) Sasaki debates burning everything right then and there.

Saiko and mutsuki talk about Hinami and Haise. Saiko reminisce how she taught Hinami to play a few of her games. She admits to mutsuki that hinami praised kaneki as this amazing gentle person and yet he didn't bother to see Hinami. She feels he didn't care.

Meanwhile Urie and Shizu actually agree to work together to bring Saiko and Haise together to talk.

Haise's headache is horrible and he feels like he could throw up or eat a horse or punch something. He had planned to work out until Shirazu stops him. In the end, there plan leads to Saiko barbing Haise, and says that he was the reason his first family fell apart and this one was too. Without even realizing it he slaps her with everyone around them. Panicking, afraid of what he had done and assuming himself a danger, he locks himself in his room's bathroom.

He's tired, he's stressed, fearing for the future and the past he can't remember and the parts that have come back to haunt him. And he's hungry.

As Mutsuki and Urie argue over what happened and Saiko trying not to cry, Shirazu tries to bust down Haises door. Eventually he gets through the door and grabs Haise yelling. Haise can't help but lash out and he accidentally cuts Shirazu's arm. Haise then breaks down begging shizu not to call anyone, he can't go to cochlea.

Things happen. Haise is plagued by thoughts of what could have been. He could have been happy with Hinami in Anteiku. Perhaps if he had been better, stronger, he could have saved his Anteiku family. But none of the memories are there. He doesn't know what to feel.

Urie comes into the bathroom and forcefully removes shirazu. They sit and talk. Urie talks about his own family and how he doesn't remember his mother and his father died when he was young but he weirdly still loved them and the hurt doesn't go away just cuz you don't remember all the memories. The loss of familiarity is cold but it's our choice to respect them and live for them and so forth.

Apologies are made and they do a proper memorial for Hinami. Haise gives Saiko all of Hinami's things. And they play some of the games saiko was allowed to give to her in cochlea.

(Later, when the CCG starts to fall, Saiko wears Hinami's mask)

Touka Arc

When they run into Touka in public, haise tries to avoid her but she asks him out for coffee. He agrees and the meet up and talk about the ghoul child in custody and how she finds it so odd that they would give such verdict for a ghoul. He explains that he was the one to suggest it and Touka ask if its better to be dead or a caged animal. It's dark and surprising. He can't help but think of his own situation: a ghoul in bird cage (doves=CCG agents).

She suggest bringing some high quality :re coffee to him and the date goes on. Eventually Haise slips, saying something like "you always loved beating up bullies" and Touka calls him out on it. However, when she addresses that he remembers, and she knows that he is a ghoul, and he knows she is too, she asks why he never turned her in. he admits he cannot watch his family die. She can't help but scoff bringing up Hinami.

They had finished their walk back to :re. After some thought he admits everything. He admits how afraid he was for Hinami, how angry he was that doing anything, saying anything, could lead to him being seen as unfit to work for the CCG. He was afraid what that would mean for the Quinx if they locked him up in Cochlea. Would they be little soldiers like Katsuo would be? Unaware of the other side of the war and the pain they are causing? Or perhaps the CCG would scrap the project and "tie up loose ends." He didn't think he would make it in Cochlea again either. He wouldn't leave again, not unless it was in a body bag. He was scared that if he visited Hinami he wouldn't have been able to stop himself from doing something rash.

In his vulnerability Touka tries to calm him and says that while she doesn't fight these days, she can help him disappear. "We can start over again. It can be just us, if you want. Of all people, Shuu became a mess when you left." He declines her and says he can't talk to her anymore. For her safety, for the safety of ghouls who will come to :Re, a safe haven. To protect those that were left of his family, Doves can't keep coming in to :Re. He can't raise suspicion. So for once and for all he apologizes and lets her go. He leaves a kiss on her forhead before saying, "Tell Yomo I'm sorry, too. But please, let me do this for you two."

Conclusion

I had planned for a simple holiday dinner (I think I left off alluding that Christmas was coming up?), everyone joking and laughing again. Haise gets lost in the moment as Saiko sneaks an ice cube down Shirazu's shirt. Shirazu tries to throw pudding at her but hits Urie. He shakes a can of soda and opens it on shirazu's face who dodges and hits Mutsuki. The whole room stops breathing. "That's it!" food fight ensures. In the end, Haise is happy with the family he has now, accepts the familiarity they bring. Perhaps at one time he sat like this with the gang of Anteiku. But now he's here and he can cherish this now. And this time he plans not to forget.

Further thoughts that I knew I would likely never get to.

I wanted an arc specific to Haise's fear of becoming abusive like his mother. This was meant to be expressed more in "Like Mother Like Son" but it ended up getting pushed aside.

Akira eventually becomes aware that Touka exist as someone from his past. However, for the safety of the Quinx and Sasaki, as well as what he may do, she keeps quiet, especially when Haise completely stops going to :Re.

Katsuo has a warped thought process similar to Juuzo thanks to the lack of interaction with the real world. He's not as bad as Juuzo, but he doesn't always understand why people get upset at certain things, like death. However, he reads anything and everything Haise gives him (and the comic books Shirazu sneaks in). This would lead to Haise questioning his own thinking. As a caged animal himself, perhaps, he wonders, this was why he had never thought of running away for so long.

The CCG would eventually begin to fall from the attacks by Aogiri. This creates the opportunity for the Quinx Squad, who decided they wanted to be more than soldiers, the courage to fight back. They provide intel to Ghoul groups, sneak out targets, and begin their goal to harmony between humans and ghouls as one of the few half-ghouls to know both sides. In the meantime, Haise begins his search for answers to Hide.

Lastly, I want to say thank you for all those that had supported me up to here! I'm doing new projects that I truly enjoy. With the way Tokyo Ghoul has been going so far (or from the spoilers I occasionally see), maybe one day I'll come back to the fandom and write more. But until then, thank you!
