Big Damn Wolfstar competition: unrequited

It's Time

Sirius watched Remus sleep on the couch of 12 Grimmauld Place. He looked so peaceful, an emotion he didn't often associate with the werewolf.

His fingers itched to run through the messy brown hair, wanting to feel the softness. The urge was great, but Sirius managed to stop himself.

It wasn't his place to touch, no matter how much he wished otherwise.

Sirius wasn't sure how it started. Maybe he had always been a little in love with one of his best friends.

For as long as he remembered, it was always Remus for him. Of course, he dated during school, but it was just to pass time. He was simply waiting for Remus to notice him as something other than a friend.

Remus never did, though. He looked at others—girls and boys—so Sirius knew it wasn't a sexuality thing. It was a choice thing. Remus' choice.

Then Sirius thought maybe he was dating around too much. Maybe Remus was scared of being hurt. Maybe he was scared he wouldn't be enough to hold Sirius' attention. So, Sirius had the same boyfriend for almost all of sixth year.

Still, Remus seemed more interested in his secret meetings with Lucius Malfoy.

Sirius glared at the memory of finding them thrusting against each other like a couple of wolves in heat.

No matter what he did, he could never gain Remus' attention in a way that surpassed friendship.

Sirius blinked, shaking his head and finding himself back in the present.

So many years had passed since then. Back then, his biggest problem was unrequited love.

Now, though, he had much bigger problems. Like a war and being a proper godfather to Harry. And yet, he still found himself focused on his unrequited love.

"What do you see in her?" Sirius whispered.

There wasn't any answer from the sleeping man. Of course, he hasn't expected an answer.

When Remus and Tonks announced they were together, his heart broke. When he overheard their whispered conversation about possibly getting married, it shattered.

Remus had finally fallen in love with a Black—her last name might be Tonks, but she was a Black by blood—and it was the wrong Black.

"Why her?" he asked. Again, there was no answer.

He tiredly rubbed his hand over face, trying to keep his exhaustion at bay.

He stood up and turned away from the couch, finding it difficult to keep looking at Remus.

He took a couple of steps away. "I don't understand why I could never get you to want me, but I hope Tonks makes you happy."

Remus slowly opened one of his eyes, and when he saw Sirius was gone, his body relaxed as his other eye opened.

He'd never tell Sirius, but he was very much aware of the dog animigus' feelings.

He never said anything, hoping they'd go away so he didn't have to verbally break Sirius' heart.

He hated that Sirius was hurting, but maybe now that he knew how much Remus and Tonks meant to each other, he could finally move on.

Remus certainly hoped so.
